In this paper, we study two PDEs that generalize the urban crime model proposed by Short \emph{et al}. [Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci., 18 (2008), pp. 1249-1267]. Our modifications are made under assumption of the spatial heterogeneity of both the near-repeat victimization effect and the dispersal strategy of criminal agents. We investigate pattern formations in the reaction-advection-diffusion systems with nonlinear diffusion over multi-dimensional bounded domains subject to homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. It is shown that the positive homogeneous steady state loses its stability as the intrinsic near-repeat victimization rate $\epsilon$ decreases and spatially nonconstant solutions emerge through bifurcation. Moreover, we find the wavemode selection mechanism through rigorous stability analysis of these nontrivial patterns, which shows that the only stable pattern must have wavenumber that maximizes the bifurcation value. Based on this wavemode selection mechanism, we will be able to precisely predict the formation of stable aggregates of the house attractiveness and criminal population density, at least when the diffusion rate $\epsilon$ is around the principal bifurcation value. Our theoretical results also suggest that large domains support more stable aggregates than small domains. Finally, we perform extensive numerical simulations over 1D intervals and 2D squares to illustrate and verify our theoretical findings. Our numerics also include some interesting phenomena such as the merging of two interior spikes and the emerging of new spikes, etc. These nontrivial solutions can model the well observed aggregation phenomenon in urban criminal activities.

Abstract Modern evolutionary biology requires integrative approaches that combine life history, population structure, ecology, and development. The nematode Pristionchus pacificus has been established as a model system in which these aspects can be studied in one organism. P. pacificus has well-developed genetic, genomic, and transgenic tools and its ecologic association with scarab beetles is well described. A recent study provided first mutation rate estimates based on mitochondrial genome sequencing and mutation accumulation line experiments that help resolve rather ancient evolutionary branches. Here, we analyzed the tandem-repeat pattern and studied spontaneous mutation rates for microsatellite markers by using the previously generated mutation accumulation lines. We found that 0.59%–3.83% of the genome is composed of short tandem repeats. We developed 41 microsatellite markers, randomly chosen throughout the genome and analyzed them in 82 mutation accumulation lines after 142 generations. A total of 31 mutations were identified in these lines. There was a strong correlation between allele size and mutation rate in P. pacificus, similar to Caenorhabditis elegans. In contrast to C. elegans, however, there is no evidence for a bias toward multistep mutations. The mutation spectrum of microsatellite loci in P. pacificus shows more insertions than deletions, indicating a tendency toward lengthening, a process that might have contributed to the increase in genome size. The mutation rates obtained for individual microsatellite markers provide guidelines for divergence time estimates that can be applied in P. pacificus next-generation sequencing approaches of wild isolates.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the English language proficiency of foreign students who apply for higher education in the United States. It is administered according to a strict schedule through the International and Special Center (I&SC) testing program or at ad hoc intervals by institutional users as part of the TOEFL Institutional Testing Program (INST). This study investigated the patterns of test taking and score change for examinees who repeated the TOEFL in an International or I&SC administration within 24 to 60 months after initial testing. Data for examinees who repeated TOEFL within 1 to 12 months following initial testing by institutions participating in the TOEFL INST were also analyzed. In both the I&SC and INST samples, TOEFL repeaters registered substantial average net gains in performance. Findings suggested that there may be differences among national-linguistic groups in typical rate of acquisition of proficiency in English. The magnitude of the average score changes found to be associated with test repetition for repeaters, combined with relatively strong differences among national-linguistic groups in both incidence of test repetition and mean score change, indicates that for purposes of summary reporting on TOEFL performance (e.g., in defining basic reference groups), it is important to specify the test-repetition status of the gorups of examinees involved.
