Episode 194: On June 25, 1950, after months of increasing tension, the Korean War or what has been called Canada's forgotten war, began when North Korean troops invaded South Korea. Countries, including Canada, belonging to the newly formed United Nations jumped in quickly to defend democratic South Korea from the the communist forces from the north. Canada contributed the third largest number of soldiers among UN countries to the war. More than 26,000 Canadians served in the conflict on land, at sea and in the air. Over the next three years of the conflict there were 516 Canadians killed, another 1042 were wounded, 33 became prisoners of war and 16 soldiers are still missing in action. December 29th of this year marks the 131st memorial and remembrance of the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 where the United States Calvary followed several ghost dancers and community members to Wounded Knee, opened-fired, and killed over 300 indigenous men, women and children.More than 80 later, the struggle continued at Wounded Knee from February 27th, 1973 to May 8th, 1973 when over 200 members of the American Indian Movement (AIM) and their supporters occupied Wounded Knee at Pine Ridge, Lakota Nation (South Dakota) in a sixty-seven day standoff which resulted in a negotiated settlement between both sides. AIM and their supporters came to the assistance of traditionalist who were struggling against "elected" chairman Richard "Dickie" Wilson, whose administration along with support of the United States government, was rife with corruption, nepotism, and violence. Join us for a one-hour special with exclusive sound from Pacifica's archives on the initial coverage of the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee and exclusive sound from "'A Tattoo On My Heart: The Warriors of Wounded Knee 1973."

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the Town of Windsor will host a “Walk of Light” community remembrance ceremony on the historic Windsor Town Green at 7:00 PM on Saturday, September 11, 2021. Approximately 3,000 paper luminary bags, one for each individual who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, will line the sidewalks of the green. Each luminary bag has been inscribed with the name of a person who perished on 9/11. The bags will be illuminated with glow sticks at dusk. A remembrance ceremony honoring our fallen heroes will be held from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Today marks the one year anniversary of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Today, across our district, we reflect on the lives that were lost, and the families and friends of the victims who were impacted by this horrific event. Vero Beach High School is remembering not only the victims of the MSD tragedy, but victims of school shootings across our country. 17 desks are displayed, and 17 students wearing white shirts with the victims names on them, are joining students holding posters remembering victims from Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, Columbine, and Santa Fe High School, to name a few. At 10:17 VBHS will observe a moment of silence, along with 66 other school districts in Florida, as we mourn these victims and show our solidarity and support for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
