We report the result of the analysis of a dramatic repeating gravitational microlensing event OGLE-2009-BLG-092/MOA-2009-BLG-137, for which the light curve is characterized by two distinct peaks with perturbations near both peaks. We find that the event is produced by the passage of the source trajectory over the central perturbation regions associated with the individual components of a wide-separation binary. The event is special in the sense that the second perturbation, occurring $\sim 100$ days after the first, was predicted by the real-time analysis conducted after the first peak, demonstrating that real-time modeling can be routinely done for binary and planetary events. With the data obtained from follow-up observations covering the second peak, we are able to uniquely determine the physical parameters of the lens system. We find that the event occurred on a bulge clump giant and it was produced by a binary lens composed of a K and M-type main-sequence stars. The estimated masses of the binary components are $M_1=0.69 \pm 0.11\ M_\odot$ and $M_2=0.36\pm 0.06\ M_\odot$, respectively, and they are separated in projection by $r_\perp=10.9\pm 1.3\ {\rm AU}$. The measured distance to the lens is $D_{\rm L}=5.6 \pm 0.7\ {\rm kpc}$. We also detect the orbital motion of the lens system.

In order to trigger the astrophysics community for follow-up observations, or being able to quickly respond to external science alerts, a fast analysis pipeline is crucial. This will be accomplished by means of a Real-Time Analysis (RTA) pipeline, a fast and automated science alert trigger system, becoming a key system of the CTA observatory. Among the CTA design key requirements to the RTA system, the most challenging is the generation of alerts within 30 seconds from the last acquired event, while obtaining a flux sensitivity not worse than the one of the final analysis by more than a factor of 3. A dedicated software and hardware architecture for the RTA pipeline must be designed and tested. We present comparison of OpenCL solutions using different kind of devices like CPUs, Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) and Field Programmable Array (FPGA) cards for the Real-Time data reduction of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) triggered data.

We study the process of thermal activation mediated by sphaleron transitions by analyzing the real-time dynamics of the decay out of equilibrium in a $1+1$ dimensional field theory with a metastable state. The situation considered is that of a rapid supercooling in which the system is trapped in a metastable state at a temperature larger than the mass of the quanta, but smaller than the energy to create a critical droplet. The initial density matrix is evolved in time and the nucleation rate (probability current at the saddle point) is computed. The nucleation rate is {\it time dependent}, vanishing at early times, reaching a maximum at a time $t \approx 1/m$ with $m$ the mass of quanta in the metastable state, and decreasing at long times as a consequence of unitarity. An estimate for the average number of particles of ``true vacuum'' produced as a function of time during the nucleation process is obtained.

We discuss recent results obtained from simulations of high temperature, classical, real time dynamics of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory at temperatures of the order of the electroweak scale. Measurements of gauge covariant and gauge invariant autocorrelations of the fields indicate that the ASY-Bodecker scenario is irrelevant at these temperatures.

The reactions gamma gamma -> pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^- and gamma gamma -> pi^+pi^0pi^-pi^0 are studied with the L3 detector at LEP in a data sample collected at centre-of-mass energies from 161GeV to 209GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 698/pb. A spin-parity-helicity analysis of the rho^0 rho^0 and rho^+ rho^- systems for two-photon centre-of-mass energies between 1GeV and 3GeV shows the dominance of the spin-parity state 2+ with helicity 2. The contribution of 0+ and 0- spin-parity states is also observed, whereas contributions of 2- states and of a state with spin-parity 2+ and zero helicity are found to be negligible.

Abstract Some people can echolocate by making sonar emissions (e.g., mouth-clicks, finger snaps, feet shuffling, humming, cane tapping, etc.) and listening to the returning echoes. To date there are no statistics available about how many blind people use echolocation, but anecdotal reports in the literature suggest that perhaps between 20 and 30% of totally blind people may use it, suggesting that echolocation affords broad functional benefits. Consistent with the notion that blind individuals benefit from the use of echolocation, previous research conducted under controlled experimental conditions has shown that echolocation improves blind people's spatial sensing ability. The current study investigated if there is also evidence for functional benefits of echolocation in real life. To address this question the current study conducted an online survey. Thirty-seven blind people participated. Linear regression analyses of survey data revealed that, while statistically controlling for participants' gender, age, level of visual function, general health, employment status, level of education, Braille skill, and use of other mobility means, people who use echolocation have higher salary, and higher mobility in unfamiliar places, than people who do not use echolocation. The majority of our participants (34 out of 37) use the long cane, and all participants who reported to echolocate, also reported to use the long cane. This suggests that the benefit of echolocation that we found might be conditional upon the long cane being used as well. The investigation was correlational in nature, and thus cannot be used to determine causality. In addition, the sample was small (N = 37), and one should be cautious when generalizing the current results to the population. The data, however, are consistent with the idea that echolocation offers real-life advantages for blind people, and that echolocation may be involved in peoples' successful adaptation to vision loss.

A method has been developed for real-time stability margin measurement calculations. The method relies on a tailored-forced excitation targeted to a specific frequency range. Computation of the frequency response is matched to the specific frequencies contained in the excitation. A recursive Fourier transformation is used to make the method compatible with real-time calculation. The method was incorporated into the X-38 nonlinear simulation and applied to an X-38 robustness test. X-38 stability margins were calculated for different variations in aerodynamic and mass properties over the vehicle flight trajectory. The new method showed results comparable to more traditional stability analysis techniques, and at the same time, this new method provided coverage that is more complete and increased efficiency.

Linux Audio Conference 2010 Paper: 5 years of using SuperCollider in real-time interactive performances and installations - retrospective analysis of Schwelle, Chronotopia and Semblance Marije Baalman Collaborative, interactive performances and installations are a challenging coding environment. SuperCollider is an especially flexible audio programming language suitable to use in this context; and in this paper I will reflect on 5 years of working with this language in three professional projects, involving dance and interactive environments. I will discuss the needs and context of each project, common problems encountered and the solutions as I have implemented them for each project, as well as the resulting tools that have been published online.

We present the design of two-dimensional photonic crystal microcavities in thin diamond membranes well suited for coupling of color centers in diamond. By comparing simulated and ideal field distributions in Fourier and real space and by according modification of air hole positions and size, we optimize the cavity structure yielding high quality factors up to Q = 320000 with a modal volume of V = 0.35 (lambda/n)^3. Using the very same approach we also improve previous designs of a small modal volume microcavity in silicon, gaining a factor of 3 in cavity Q. In view of practical realization of photonic crystals in synthetic diamond films, it is necessary to investigate the influence of material absorption on the quality factor. We show that this influence can be predicted by a simple model, replacing time consuming simulations.

A two-layer statistically equivalent periodic unit cell is offered to predict a macroscopic response of plain weave multilayer carbon-carbon textile composites. Falling-short in describing the most typical geometrical imperfections of these material systems the original formulation presented in (Zeman and \v{S}ejnoha, International Journal of Solids and Structures, 41 (2004), pp. 6549--6571) is substantially modified, now allowing for nesting and mutual shift of individual layers of textile fabric in all three directions. Yet, the most valuable asset of the present formulation is seen in the possibility of reflecting the influence of negligible meso-scale porosity through a system of oblate spheroidal voids introduced in between the two layers of the unit cell. Numerical predictions of both the effective thermal conductivities and elastic stiffnesses and their comparison with available laboratory data and the results derived using the Mori-Tanaka averaging scheme support credibility of the present approach, about as much as the reliability of local mechanical properties found from nanoindentation tests performed directly on the analyzed composite samples.

This report summarizes research results from a program directed toward developing scene-analysis technology to deal with the problems of scene-analysis organization, control, and low-level feature extraction. The work on organization and control has concentrated on the use of a production system framework. To understand the limitations of production systems in building scene-analysis systems, both a high-level and low-level vision system were implemented. The performance of these systems is described in terms of ease of modification, ease of programming, and ability to embed appropriate domain-dependent knowledge. Several low-level feature-extraction techniques have also been developed concurrently on this program. These include an evaluation of edge operators, use of texture statistics, a glancing operator based on texture properties, and a representation for range motion. A summary is included that places these results in perspective with current work in scene analysis. (Author)

The intelligent system for telemetry analysis in real-time (ISTAR) is an advanced vehicle monitoring environment incorporating expert systems, analysis tools, and on-line hypermedia documentation. The system was developed for the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) in Los Angeles, California, in support of the inertial upper stage (IUS) booster vehicle. Over a five year period the system progressed from rapid prototype to operational system. ISTAR has been used to support five IUS missions and countless mission simulations. There were a significant number of lessons learned with respect to integrating an expert system capability into an existing ground system.

We describe a new technique to detect and analyze periodic motion as seen from both a static and moving camera. By tracking objects of interest, we compute an object's self-similarity as it evolves in time. For periodic motion, the self-similarity measure is also periodic, and we apply time-frequency analysis to detect and characterize the periodic motion. A real-time system has been implemented to track and classify objects using periodicity. Examples of object classification, person counting, and non-stationary periodicity are provided.

This thesis evaluates the usefulness of Petri net modeling for software safety analysis of a real-time system. The system is a safety arming device for a guided missile. The features of basic Petri net modeling are discussed in relation to the kinds of components that are found in real-time systems. This thesis proposes a methodology for systematically constructing a Petri net model from system and software design information. Several techniques for analyzing the resulting Petri net model are illustrated and evaluated for appropriateness.

The molecular detection of circulating tumor cells (CTC) in breast cancer patients has been limited by two factors: 1) low concentration of CTC in peripheral blood, and 2) normal lymphocytes express some cancer-associated genes at detectable levels. In this study, we investigated the ability of a novel buoyant density gradient centrifugation (BDGC) medium (Oncoouick, HEXAL Gentech) to enrich CTC prior to real-time RT-PCR analysis.

We investigate dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) in realtime embedded systems that use checkpointing for fault tolerance. We present feasibility-of-scheduling tests for checkpointing schemes for a constant processor speed as well as for variable processor speeds. DVS is then carried out on the basis of the feasibility analysis. We incorporate practical issues such as faults during checkpointing and state restoration, rollback recovery time, memory access time and energy, and DVS overhead. Simulation results are presented for real-life checkpointing data and embedded processors.

Biotoxin activity assays typically involve multistep sample preparation, multicomponent reactions, multistep analysis, or a combination thereof. We report a single-step, real time ricin activity assay that requires little or no sample preparation and employs direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry. The release of adenine from the inhomogeneous substrate herring sperm DNA by ricin was determined to be 53 +/- 2 pmol adenine per picomole of ricin per hour. This procedure can be readily adapted to any enzyme for which a reactant or product of low molecular weight (up to 600) can be identified.

A modification of the Peli and Lim algorithm has been put to work in processing images taken from a submerged camera operating in turbid water environments with uneven light distribution. The algorithm's performance was observed in detail to determine if it met the required specifications. Through analysis, the algorithm's intense computational requirements and large memory storage demands were resolved. It was determined that for the algorithms to operate in real time, a system with characteristics of a supercomputer would most likely be needed. The algorithm was transported to an IBM AT equipped for image processing. Possible optimization techniques were discussed briefly, and other solutions for processing images with this type of equipment were suggested.

Our method is based on the computation of quenched free energies with periodic and twisted periodic boundary conditions on a finite basis. The precision can be systematically improved by increasing the size of the basis, leading to very fast convergence towards the thermodynamic limit. We apply the method to obtain the phase diagrams of the random-bond Ising model and $q$-state Potts gauge glasses. In the Ising case, the Nishimori point is found at $p_N = 0.10929 \pm 0.00002$, in agreement with and improving on the precision of existing numerical estimations. Similar precision is found throughout the high-temperature part of the phase diagram. Finite-size effects are larger in the low-temperature region, but our results are in qualitative agreement with the known features of the phase diagram. In particular we show analytically that the critical point in the ground state is located at finite $p_0$.

The long term goals of the NPS portion of this project, which is joint with UCSC, are to develop a mesoscale coastal analysis system for use in diagnosing and predicting coastal circulations in a topographically complex coastal region and to provide guidance to UCSC for the development of data collection, data management, and visualization tools for mesoscale meteorological problems. The specific scientific objectives of this project are to develop a coastal mesoscale data assimilation system using multiquadric interpolation and the Navy's NORAPS/COAMPS and NCAR/Penn State MM5 model, diagnose the sensitivity of the diurnally varying winds in the Monterey Bay to synoptic-scale influences using the data assimilation system and other REINAS tools, and to assess the role of the complex coastal topography in modifying the Monterey Bay sea breeze.

DoD acquisition is an extremely complex system, composed of myriad stakeholders, processes, people, activities, and organizational structures. Processes within this complex system are encumbered by continuous creation of large amounts of unstructured and unformatted acquisition program data. Acquisition analysts and decision-makers must analyze this available data to obtain a complete and understandable picture. For those embedded within the complexities of the acquisition community, this effort represents a daunting, if not impossible, task. We apply a data-driven automation system, namely, Lexical Link Analysis (LLA), to help acquisition researchers and decision-makers recognize important connections (concepts) that form patterns derived from dynamic, ongoing data collection. This year we have built two use cases of the LLA web service to develop focused practice and theory. In practice, we have been examining both LLA and System Self-Awareness (SSA) as knowledge management tools for scoring/ranking interesting information and for visualizing/reporting correlations among categories of information. In theory, we have shown how to optimize the overall fitness of the system by considering the trade-off between a node's authority and expertise. This work has advanced the DoD-wide effort of integrating and maintaining authoritative and accurate acquisition data services in both legacy and new platforms.

Joan of Arc is a folk heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. Claiming divine guidance, she led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War, which paved the way for the coronation of Charles VII of France. Captured by her enemies, she was sold to the English and put on trial for charges of "insubordination and heterodoxy". She was burned at the stake for heresy when she was 19 years old. Twenty-five years after her execution, an inquisitorial court examined the trial, pronounced her innocent, and declared her a martyr. Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920.
