The study aims to develop a valid, practical and effective Biology student’s book based on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) on the topic of biotechnology for Grade XII. The method applied for the study was research and development with the 4-D model. The subjects were 58 Grade XII students of SMAN 1 Muncar, Banyuwangi-Indonesia. The results showed that the average of validation result of STEM-based student’s book was 86.4% which fell under a strong valid category. The average percentage of legibility test and practicality were in very good category of 87.18% and 96.53%, respectively. Meanwhile, the average of effectiveness test was 0.77 of normalized gain categorized in high criteria. In conclusion, it could be determined that STEM-based student’s book of biotechnology is valid, pratical, and effectively used in learning process.

5ERIC ED481423: Giant Story Problems: Reading Comprehension Through Math Problem Solving.

By

Primary students solve "oversized" story problems using drawings, equations, and written responses, helping them understand the links between the language of story problems and the numerical representations of matching equations. The activity also includes oral language and reflective writing, thus bringing together a variety of language experiences into mathematics work. During one 30-minute and one 60-minute session, students will: participate in a shared problem-solving activity; collaborate in small groups to develop a problem-solving strategy; use drawings, words, and equations to model solutions to story problems; effectively and clearly explain their problem-solving strategies to other students; and write about and reflect on their problem-solving strategies. The instructional plan, lists of resources, student assessment/reflection activities, and a list of National Council of Teachers of English/International Reading Association (NCTE/IRA) Standards addressed in the lesson are included. A sheet of sample story problems is attached. (PM)

9The Students’ Ability To Solve Realistic Mathematical Problems Through Polya Type Problem Solving Learning Model

By

This study was done to analyze the effect of Polyatype problem solving learning oriented toward realistic mathematics on the ability to solve mathematical word problems. This study belongs to an experimental research with the Posttest Only Control Group Design. The population used in this study was the students of grade 4 at Gugus VIII SukawatiGianyarelementary schools with the total number of 138. The sample was selected through random sampling. The result of selection by lottery assigned Grade 4 students of SDN 4 SingapaduKaler to the control class and Grade 4 students of SDN 1 SingapaduKaler to the experiment class. The data were collected through an essay test that had been validated. The data that had been collected were analyzed through a difference test (t-test). Based on the result of data analysis it can be concluded that the use of Polya type problem solving teaching model oriented toward realistic mathematics gave a positive effect to the ability to solve word problems among the Grade 4 students in Gugus VIII Sukawati Gianyar.
