For mechanical systems, the basic principles of precision motion have long been clearly enunciated. What is new is the potential for interactive computer use in real-time feedback control, involving (1) structural stabilization of the instrument or machine; (2) movement and location of its parts; (3) processing of metrology information; and (4) positioning and stabilization of th tool/workpiece interactions in a machine tool. This can lead to a distributed, multivariable, multiloop control problem, with significant computation required in the feedback algorithm. Although the advantages of real-time control have been clear for some time, no complete machine tool or metrology system exploits this with the control of the major variables. At present open loop control is being applied, with corrections for calculated (or previously measured) estimates of systematic errors. Closed loop control automatically corrects for unpredictable errors from factors such as mechanical deflections, thermal deformation, and wear. Once in place, a system for precision manufacture can be used for less exacting tasks, offfering reductions of required inspections and assuring part-to-part reproducibility, with reduced rejections. Such a system is at the heart of automated production, yet remains a research area.

Measurements of the VETA encircled energies have been performed at 5 energies within 16 radii ranging from 0.05 to 200 arcseconds. We report here on the analysis of the accuracy of those measurements. A common 'error tree' structure applies, and we present representative numbers for the larger terms. At 0.277, 1.5, and 2.07 keV, and for radii of 3 arcsec and larger, our measurements have estimated 1 sigma errors of 0.6 to 1.5 percent. Effects of measurement statistics and of the VETA test mount limit the accuracy at smaller angles, and modulation by the counter window support structure together with the imperfect position repeatability limit the accuracy for the 0.93 and 2.3 keV energies. We expect to mitigate these limitations when calibrating the complete AXAF flight mirror assembly.

A new geometric adaptive control (GAC) system has been developed for improving the accuracy and stability in machining cylindrical workpiece. The system takes into consideration error generation process, machine tool dynamics, and metrology. The new stochastic model constructed in this thesis provides not only insight into the nature of machining processes, but also a means for the systematic design of geometric adaptive controllers. The adaptive control algorithms for the GAC system are derived by using the theory of self-tuning control (STC). The algorithms are simple, robust, and suitable for microprocessor implementation. Whitehouse's multiprobe measurement is modified for use in the control system for the first time. Interesting properties of this measurement in control are analyzed and predicted. The results of simulation show that the GAC system can improve both the accuracy and the stability considerably. Through the theoretical analysis it was possible to resolve the control problems imposed by multiprobe measurement, and to achieve near optimum control performance. A comparison with another GAC system which uses FCC technique is made to show that the proposed GAC system does have better performance than other existing GAC systems in precision machining. One of these technologies, recombination mediated genetic engineering (recombineering) allows for precision DNA engineering of chromosomes and plasmids in Escherichia coli. Single-stranded DNA recombineering (SSDR) allows for the generation of subtle mutations without the need for selection and without leaving behind any foreign DNA. In this review we discuss the application of SSDR technology in lactic acid bacteria, with an emphasis on key factors that were critical to move this technology from E. coli into Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactococcus lactis. We also provide a blueprint for how to proceed if one is attempting to establish SSDR technology in a lactic acid bacterium. The emergence of CRISPR-Cas technology in genome engineering and its potential application to enhancing SSDR in lactic acid bacteria is discussed. The ability to perform precision genome engineering in medically and industrially important lactic acid bacteria will allow for the genetic improvement of strains without compromising safety.

The PAMS Engineering Services Program was initiated to provide technical support for experimental testing, and dynamic engineering evaluations of airborne antenna systems utilizing the Precision Antenna Measurement System and associated airborne instrumentation. The support level included the modification of existing PAMS instrumentation, new computer programs, and analyses of the PAMS and its environment. This talk is in two parts both entitled mass production requires precision engineering. The first is about the dynamical generation of mass for matter particles in gauge theories. I will explain how the details of this depend on a precision knowledge of the interactions. The second is about tests of the mechanism of chiral symmetry breaking in QCD that the precision engineering of high luminosity colliders and particle detectors will shortly make possible. Since the latter topic has been described in Ref. 1, here I will just discuss the first: the production of mass from nothing.

Efforts concerned the establishment of a production engineering measure for high reliability, fixed, film, precision resistors suitable for use in the Minuteman program. Design of a sub assembly machine is well under way and estimated as being 20% complete. This design will perform three subassembly operations on one piece of equipment. A ceramic evaluation program is underway with the receipt of the ceramic pieces and the units are going through the manufacturing process. A helium-nitrogen study was outlined and time scheduled with production for the manufacture of devices. A new spiralling techniques investigation was started with the formulation of tests to determine the effect of mechanized handling on the metallized substrate.

This document was submitted as supporting material to an Engineering Change Proposal (ECP) for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). This ECP requests gridded visibilities as an extra imaging data product from the SKA, in order to enable bespoke analysis techniques to measure source morphologies to the accuracy necessary for precision cosmology with radio weak lensing. We also discuss the properties of an SKA weak lensing data set and potential overlaps with other cosmology science goals.

The mirror assembly of the AXAF observatory consists of four concentric, confocal, Wolter type 1 telescopes. Each telescope includes two conical grazing incidence mirrors, a paraboloid followed by a hyperboloid. Fabrication of these state-or-the-art optics is now complete, with predicted performance that surpasses the goals of the program. The fabrication of these optics, whose size and requirements exceed those of any previous x-ray mirrors, presented a challenging task requiring the use of precision engineering in many different forms. Virtually all of the equipment used for this effort required precision engineering. Accurate metrology required deterministic support of the mirrors in order to model the gravity distortions which will not be present on orbit. The primary axial instrument, known as the Precision Metrology Station (PMS), was a unique scanning Fizeau interferometer. After metrology was complete, the optics were placed in specially designed Glass Support Fixtures (GSF's) for installation on the Automated Cylindrical Grinder/Polishers (ACG/P's). The GSF's were custom molded for each mirror element to match the shape of the outer surface to minimize distortions of the inner surface. The final performance of the telescope is expected to far exceed the original goals and expectations of the program.

Thermal effects on the accuracy of numerically controlled machine tools are specially important in the context of unmanned manufacture or under conditions of precision metal cutting. Removal of the operator from the direct control of the metal cutting process has created problems in terms of maintaining accuracy. The objective of this research is to study thermal effects on the accuracy of numerically controlled machine tools. The initial part of the research report is concerned with the analysis of a hypothetical machine. The thermal characteristics of this machine are studied. Numerical methods for evaluating the errors exhibited by the slides of the machine are proposed and the possibility of predicting thermally induced errors by the use of regression equations is investigated. A method for computing the workspace error is also presented. The final part is concerned with the actual measurement of errors on a modern CNC machining center. Thermal influences on the errors is the main objective of the experimental work. Thermal influences on the errors of machine tools are predictable. Techniques for determining thermal effects on machine tools at a design stage are also presented. This program consisted of the production of precision hot forged spiral bevel helicoptor gear sets using methods previously developed under AVSCOM sponsorship. Forging was performed at TRW on a mechanical press using two forging blows, performed in rapid succession with reheating, to obtain forgings with integrally forged tooth forms. The geometry of the as-forged tooth forms were controlled such that the resultant machining stock envelope was suitable for carburising and finish grinding. The parts were finished and then shipped to Boeing-Vertol Co. for qualification testing. The objective of this program is to qualify a process which will produce gear blanks which are metallurgically superior and cheaper to finish than blanks made by conventional methods. (Author)

The second part of this project, in English, is a chapter in the book "The Escaping Club," written in 1922 by the same British prisoner of war, the aviator A. J. Sonnets from The Patagonian is a collection of sonnets and the first work published by the short-lived Claire Marie press. Each sonnet is a portrait of someone Evans knows from the Modernist scene just beginning to coalesce in Greenwich Village, and each portrait is dedicated to a completely different acquaintance. (Evans's portraits of his friend Allen Norton are dedicated to the critic Carl Van Vechten, for instance, and his portraits of himself are dedicated to Allen Norton. His portrait of Carl Van Vechten is dedicated to Gertrude Stein.) What emerges is a clever, irreverent, set of early Modernist in-jokes that look forward to the Dadaist and Surrealist movements that would form in Europe after World War I. Giddy, bizarre and deftly constructed, Sonnets from the Patagonian read like nothing else of its time. Evans owned and managed the Claire Marie press and during the year it existed, he published only six titles, including Tender Buttons by Getrude Stein. It is for Tender Buttons that Claire Marie and Donald Evans are best remembered, if they are remembered at all. While it lasted, the press exerted an outsized influence on the world of Modernist art and literature in New York. Evans was an associate of Stein, Van Vechten, Mabel Luhan Dodge, Walter Conrad Arensberg and Wallace Stevens. He published three more books before his death in 1921, allegedly by suicide. Born in London of Welsh parents, George Essex Evans was raised and educated by his mother Mary Ann (née Owen) in Pembrokeshire after she was widowed when George was only a few months old. Emigrating to Queensland with his siblings to Australia at age 17 with the intention of farming, Evans was badly injured in a horse-riding accident, when he was thrown against a tree and was unable to do any physical work. Evans was described as a reserved man, and at times rather moody and impulsive. However, he was also described as a kind person and a loyal friend. He had a strong sense of honour and self-respect, traits that made him a model husband and father. Evans was described as having a tremendous memory, particularly for poetic verse, of which he was able to recite a prodigious amount.
