7Is The Polarized Light Flavor Sea-quark Asymmetric?
By Toshiyuki Morii and Teruya Yamanishi
Simple formulas on $\Delta\bar d(x)-\Delta\bar u(x)$ are proposed for extracting their values from polarized deep-inelastic semi-inclusive data. The present SMC and HERMES data suggest that $\Delta\bar d(x)-\Delta\bar u(x)$ is slightly negative, though the precision of the data is not enough for confirming it.

11Plasmon Mediated Non-photochemical Nucleation Of Nanoparticles By Circularly Polarized Light
By Victor G. Karpov and Nicholas I. Grigorchuk
We predict nucleation of pancake shaped metallic nanoparticles having plasmonic frequencies in resonance with a non-absorbed circularly polarized electromagnetic field. We show that the same field can induce nucleation of randomly oriented needle shaped particles. The probabilities of these shapes are estimated vs. field frequency and strength, material parameters, and temperature. This constitutes a quantitative model of non-photochemical laser induced nucleation (NPLIN) consistent with the observed particle geometry. Our results open a venue to nucleation of nanoparticles of desirable shapes controlled by the field frequency and polarization.

12The Signature Of Primordial Grain Growth In The Polarized Light Of The AU Mic Debris Disk
By James R. Graham, Paul G. Kalas and Brenda C. Matthews
We have used the Hubble Space Telescope/ACS coronagraph to make polarization maps of the AU Mic debris disk. The fractional linear polarization rises monotonically from about 0.05 to 0.4 between 20 and 80 AU. The polarization is perpendicular to the disk, indicating that the scattered light originates from micron sized grains in an optically thin disk. Disk models, which simultaneously fit the surface brightness and polarization, show that the inner disk ( < 40-50 AU) is depleted of micron-sized dust by a factor of more than 300, which means that the disk is collision dominated. The grains have high maximum linear polarization and strong forward scattering. Spherical grains composed of conventional materials cannot reproduce these optical properties. A Mie/Maxwell-Garnett analysis implicates highly porous (91-94%) particles. In the inner Solar System, porous particles form in cometary dust, where the sublimation of ices leaves a "bird's nest" of refractory organic and silicate material. In AU Mic, the grain porosity may be primordial, because the dust "birth ring" lies beyond the ice sublimation point. The observed porosities span the range of values implied by laboratory studies of particle coagulation by ballistic cluster-cluster aggregation. To avoid compactification, the upper size limit for the parent bodies is in the decimeter range, in agreement with theoretical predictions based on collisional lifetime arguments. Consequently, AU Mic may exhibit the signature of the primordial agglomeration process whereby interstellar grains first assembled to form macroscopic objects.

13HST/NICMOS Imaging Polarimetry Of Proto-Planetary Nebulae II: Macro-morphology Of The Dust Shell Structure Via Polarized Light
By Toshiya Ueta, Koji Murakawa and Margaret Meixner
The structure of the dusty circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs) reveals the mass-loss history of these sources and how such histories may differ for elliptical (SOLE) and bipolar (DUPLEX) PPNs. To study the PPN structures via dust-scattered linearly polarized starlight, we have compiled the imaging-polarimetric data for all 18 evolved stars that have been obtained to date with NICMOS on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This alternative imaging technique provides a unique way to probe the distribution of dust grains that scatter light around evolved stars. The new perspective gained from the imaging-polarimetric data has revealed several new aspects to the structures of PPNs. Point-symmetry is a prevalent imaging-polarimetric characteristic resulting from the azimuthal density gradient in the CSEs. Among these point-symmetric nebulae, three detailed morphological types can be differentiated by their polarized intensity, I_pol, and polarization strength, P. While the azimuthal density gradient is reversed above and below the equatorial plane in optically thicker bipolar nebulae, there is no gradient reversal in optically thinner elliptical nebulae. The equatorial plane of the system defined by the integrated angle of polarization is not necessarily orthogonal to the axis of the apparent bipolar structure in the total intensity data.

14Tailoring Quantum Superpositions With Linearly Polarized Amplitude-modulated Light
By S. Pustelny, M. Koczwara, L. Cincio and W. Gawlik
Amplitude-modulated nonlinear magneto-optical rotation is a powerful technique that offers a possibility of controllable generation of given quantum states. In this paper, we demonstrate creation and detection of specific ground-state magnetic-sublevel superpositions in $^{87}$Rb. By appropriate tuning of the modulation frequency and magnetic-field induction the efficiency of a given coherence generation is controlled. The processes are analyzed versus different experimental parameters.S

15Reciprocity Relation For The Vector Radiative Transport Equation And Its Application To Diffuse Optical Tomography With Polarized Light
By Ugo Tricoli, Callum M. Macdonald, Anabela Da Silva and Vadim A. Markel
We derive a reciprocity relation for vector radiative transport equation (vRTE) that describes propagation of polarized light in multiple-scattering media. We then show how this result, together with translational invariance of a plane-parallel sample, can be used to compute efficiently the sensitivity kernel of diffuse optical tomography (DOT) by Monte Carlo simulations. Numerical examples of polarization-selective sensitivity kernels thus computed are given.

A striking and unexpected example of such coupling is presented here in the context of photoelectron circular dichroism measurements on randomly oriented, chiral methyloxirane molecules, unaffected by any continuum resonance. Here, we report that the forward-backward asymmetry in the electron angular distribution, with respect to the photon axis, which is associated with photoelectron circular dichroism can surprisingly reverse direction according to the ion vibrational mode excited. This vibrational dependence represents a clear breakdown of the usual Franck–Condon assumption, ascribed to the enhanced sensitivity of photoelectron circular dichroism (compared with other observables like cross-sections or the conventional anisotropy parameter-β) to the scattering phase off the chiral molecular potential, inducing a dependence on the nuclear geometry sampled in the photoionization process. Important consequences for the interpretation of such dichroism measurements within analytical contexts are discussed.

19NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20160014603: Potential Sources Of Polarized Light From A Plant Canopy
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Field measurements have demonstrated that sunlight polarized during a first surface reflection by shiny leaves dominates the optical polarization of the light reflected by shiny-leafed plant canopies having approximately spherical leaf angle probability density functions (\"Leaf Angle Distributions\" - LAD). Yet for other canopies - specifically those without shiny leaves and/or spherical LADs - potential sources of optically polarized light may not always be obvious. Here we identify possible sources of polarized light within those other canopies and speculate on the ecologically important information polarization measurements of those sources might contain.

20Light-Front Densities For Transversely Polarized Hadrons
By C. Lorcé, B. Pasquini and M. Vanderhaeghen
We discuss the recent interpretation of quark distribution functions in the plane transverse to the light-cone direction. Such a mapping is model independent and allows one to build multidimensional pictures of the hadron and to develop a semi-classical intuition of the quark dynamics. We comment briefly the results obtained from the Form Factors of the nucleon. A generalization to a target with arbitrary spin led to a set of preferred values for the electromagnetic coupling characterizing structureless particles. Generalized polarizabilities can also be interpreted in that frame as the distortion of the charge densities due to an external electromagnetic field. Finally, we present preliminary results for the Generalized Transverse-Momentum dependent Distributions which encode in principle the most complete information about quark distributions.

21Determination Of Coronal Mass Ejection Physical Parameters From Combination Of Polarized Visible Light And UV Lyman-$\alpha$ Observations
By R. Susino and A. Bemporad
Visible-light observations of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) performed with coronagraphs and heliospheric imagers (in primis on board the SOHO and STEREO missions) have offered so far the best way to study the kinematics and geometrical structure of these fundamental events. Nevertheless, it has been widely demonstrated that only combination of multi-wavelength data (including X-ray spectra, EUV images, EUV-UV spectra, and radio dynamic spectra) can provide complete information on the plasma temperature and density distributions, non-thermal motions, magnetic fields, and other physical parameters, for both CMEs and CME-related phenomena. In this work, we analyze three CMEs by combining simultaneous data acquired in the polarized visible light by the LASCO-C2 coronagraph and in the UV H I Lyman-$\alpha$ line (1216 \AA) by the UVCS spectrometer, in order to estimate the CME plasma electron density (using the polarization-ratio technique to infer the 3D structure of the CME) and temperature (from the comparison between the expected and measured Lyman-$\alpha$ intensities) along the UVCS field of view. This analysis is primarily aimed at testing the diagnostic methods that will be applied to coronagraphic observations of CMEs delivered by the Metis instrument on board the next ESA-Solar Orbiter mission. We find that CME cores are usually associated with cooler plasma ($T \sim 10^6$ K), and that a significant increase of the electron temperatures is observed from the core to the front of the CME (where $T > 10^{6.3}$ K), which seems to be correlated, in all cases, with the morphological structure of the CME as derived from visible-light images.

22Focusing A Radially Polarized Light Beam To A Significantly Smaller Spot Size
By R. Dorn, S. Quabis and G. Leuchs
We experimentally demonstrate for the first time that a radially polarized field can be focussed to a spot size significantly smaller (0.16(1) lambda^2) than for linear polarization (0.26 lambda^2). The effect of the vector properties of light is shown by a comparison of the focal intensity distribution for radially and azimuthally polarized input fields. For strong focusing a radially polarized field leads to a longitudinal electric field component at the focus which is sharp and centered at the optical axis. The relative contribution of this component is enhanced by using an annular aperture.

24Polarized Light Bursts From Kicked Quantum Rings
By A. S. Moskalenko and J. Berakdar
Non-equilibrium quantum rings emit circular polarized subterahertz radiation with a polarization degree controllable on nano- to picosecond time scales. This we conclude using a theory developed here for the time-dependent detection of the circular polarization of polychromatic radiations, valid for time scales comparable to the reciprocal of characteristic emission frequencies. The theory is applied to driven quantum rings whereby the influence of radiative and non-radiative processes on the properties of the emitted light is incorporated.

25DTIC ADA363847: Integrated Instrumentation System For The Development Of Ionic Polarized Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes
By Defense Technical Information Center
A major discovery of the polymer solution light-emitting device (SLED) was uncovered when studying the metal/polymer interfaces. An attempt to improve the device contact by adding solvents on top of polymer film and subsequently placing a metal contact above it. when biased, the device illuminated while the polymer film was still wet. That mechanism of this new type of device is still unclear, however its suspected that this unique device operates by an electro-generated chemiluminescence mechanism.

26DTIC ADA537189: New Directions In The Detection Of Polarized Light
By Defense Technical Information Center
Polarization sensitivity, including particularly polarization vision, is an area of sensory neuroscience that has received a surge of interest in recent years. Aside from the esoteric Haidinger's brush, the human experience of this type of visual capability is only possible through filters or other artificial aids, such as polarizing sunglasses, cameras and machine vision. As a result, we tend to think of this type of light detection as an oddity restricted to small sections of the animal kingdom, perhaps useful for navigation and water surface detection in a few insects. This exclusive view is quite wrong and, as we discover more about the uses of polarization sensing, it is becoming apparent that most animal groups are capable of detecting and using this type of light for a number of different tasks.

Transitional circumstellar disks around young stellar objects have a distinctive infrared deficit around 10 microns in their Spectral Energy Distributions (SED), recently measured by the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS), suggesting dust depletion in the inner regions. These disks have been confirmed to have giant central cavities by imaging of the submillimeter (sub-mm) continuum emission using the Submillimeter Array (SMA). However, the polarized near-infrared scattered light images for most objects in a systematic IRS/SMA cross sample, obtained by HiCIAO on the Subaru telescope, show no evidence for the cavity, in clear contrast with SMA and Spitzer observations. Radiative transfer modeling indicates that many of these scattered light images are consistent with a smooth spatial distribution for micron-sized grains, with little discontinuity in the surface density of the micron-sized grains at the cavity edge. Here we present a generic disk model that can simultaneously account for the general features in IRS, SMA, and Subaru observations. Particularly, the scattered light images for this model are computed, which agree with the general trend seen in Subaru data. Decoupling between the spatial distributions of the micron-sized dust and mm-sized dust inside the cavity is suggested by the model, which, if confirmed, necessitates a mechanism, such as dust filtration, for differentiating the small and big dust in the cavity clearing process. Our model also suggests an inwardly increasing gas-to-dust-ratio in the inner disk, and different spatial distributions for the small dust inside and outside the cavity, echoing the predictions in grain coagulation and growth models.

28Anti-hypercholesterolemic And Anti-atherosclerotic Effects Of Polarized-light Therapy In Rabbits Fed A High-cholesterol Diet.
By Park, Dongsun, Kyung, Jangbeen, Kim, Dajeong, Hwang, Seock-Yeon, Choi, Ehn-Kyoung and Kim, Yun-Bae
This article is from Laboratory Animal Research , volume 28 . Abstract The effects of polarized-light therapy (PLT) on high-cholesterol diet (HCD)-induced hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis were investigated in comparison with that of lovastatin in rabbits. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by feeding male New Zealand white rabbits with 1% cholesterol in diet for 2 weeks and maintained with 0.5% cholesterol for 6 weeks, followed by normal diet for 2 weeks for recovery. Lovastatin (0.002% in diet) or daily 5-min or 20-min PLT on the outside surface of ears was started 2 weeks after induction of hypercholesterolemia. Hypercholesterolemic rabbits exhibited great increases in serum cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) levels, and finally severe atheromatous plaques formation covering 57.5% of the arterial walls. Lovastatin markedly reduced both the cholesterol and LDL, but the reducing effect (47.5%) on atheroma formation was relatively low. By comparison, 5-min PLT preferentially decreased LDL, rather than cholesterol, and thereby potentially reduced the atheroma area to 42.2%. Notably, 20-min PLT was superior to lovastatin in reducing both the cholesterol and LDL levels as well as the atheromatous plaque formation (26.4%). In contrast to the increases in blood alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase following lovastatin treatment, PLT did not cause hepatotoxicity. In addition, PLT decreased platelets and hematocrit level. The results indicate that PLT attenuates atherosclerosis not only by lowering blood cholesterol and LDL levels, but also by improving blood flow without adverse effects. Therefore, it is suggested that PLT could be a safe alternative therapy for the improvement of hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis.

29On The Velocity Of The TE-polarized Light Wave To Propagate Through A Homogeneous Dielectric Layer
By N. L. Chuprikov
We present a novel model of elastic scattering of the plane TE-polarized light wave on a homogeneous dielectric layer. This wave is shown can be uniquely decomposed into a coherent superposition of two 'subprocess' TE waves to describe transmission and reflection in all spatial regions. Each of them has one incoming and one outgoing waves connected 'causally' to each other on the midplane of the layer -- namely, with keeping the continuity of the complex-valued electrical field strength and the corresponding energy flow density (averaged over an oscillation period). This model unlike the conventional one fulfills the mandatory physical requirements: in this scattering problem, the velocity of the energy transfer through the layer must be the same on mirror-symmetric planes, as well as it must be always subluminal, including the case of a frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR).

30Resonant Photoelectron Diffraction With Circularly Polarized Light
By M. Morscher, F. Nolting, T. Brugger and T. Greber
Resonant angle scanned x-ray photoelectron diffraction (RXPD) allows the determination of the atomic and magnetic structure of surfaces and interfaces. For the case of magnetized nickel the resonant L2 excitation with circularly polarized light yields electrons with a dichroic signature from which the dipolar part may be retrieved. The corresponding L2MM and L3MM Auger electrons carry different angular momenta since their source waves rotate the dichroic dipole in the electron emission patterns by distinct angles.

31Polarized Light Imaging Of The HD 142527 Transition Disk With The Gemini Planet Imager: Dust Around The Close-in Companion
By Timothy J. Rodigas, Katherine B. Follette, Alycia Weinberger, Laird Close and Dean C. Hines
When giant planets form, they grow by accreting gas and dust. HD 142527 is a young star that offers a scaled-up view of this process. It has a broad, asymmetric ring of gas and dust beyond \about 100 AU and a wide inner gap. Within the gap, a low-mass stellar companion orbits the primary star at just \about 12 AU, and both the primary and secondary are accreting gas. In an attempt to directly detect the dusty counterpart to this accreted gas, we have observed HD 142527 with the Gemini Planet Imager in polarized light at $Y$ band (0.95-1.14 \microns). We clearly detect the companion in total intensity and show that its position and photometry are generally consistent with the expected values. We also detect a point-source in polarized light that may be spatially separated by \about a few AU from the location of the companion in total intensity. This suggests that dust is likely falling onto or orbiting the companion. Given the possible contribution of scattered light from this dust to previously reported photometry of the companion, the current mass limits should be viewed as upper limits only. If the dust near the companion is eventually confirmed to be spatially separated, this system would resemble a scaled-up version of the young planetary system inside the gap of the transition disk around LkCa 15.

32Comparing Magic Wavelengths For The $6s ~ {^2}S_{1/2}-6p ~ {^2}P_{1/2,3/2}$ Transitions Of Cs Using Circularly And Linearly Polarized Light
By Sukhjit Singh, Kiranpreet Kaur, B. K. Sahoo and Bindiya Arora
We demonstrate magic wavelengths, at which external electric field produces null differential Stark shifts, for the $6s ~ {^2}S_{1/2}-6p ~ {^2}P_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions in the Cs atom due to circularly polarized light. In addition, we also obtain magic wavelengths using linearly polarized light, in order to verify the previously reported values, and make a comparative study with the values obtained for circularly polarized light. A number of these wavelengths are found to be in the optical region and could be of immense interest to experimentalists for carrying out high precision measurements. To obtain these wavelengths, we have calculated dynamic dipole polarizabilities of the ground, $6p ~{^2}P_{1/2}$ and $6p ~{^2}P_{3/2}$ states of Cs. We use the available precise values of the electric dipole (E1) matrix elements of the transitions that give the dominant contributions from the lifetime measurements of the excited states. Other significantly contributing E1 matrix elements are obtained by employing a relativistic coupled-cluster singles and doubles method. The accuracies of the dynamic polarizabilities are substantiated by comparing the static polarizability values with the corresponding experimental results.

33DTIC ADA289796: Predicting Polarized Light Scattering By Marine Micro-Organisms.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The objectives of this research is to develop a numerical or analytical model that predicts angle-dependent scattering of polarized light from ensembles of non-spherical marine organisms and marine detritus and to verify and examine the validity and range of applications of the model by comparison with exact calculations and/or experimental results as appropriate. Specific tasks toward the objectives are: (1) to develop an artificial neural network to recognize features in the scattering matrix elements associated with the irregular shape of oceanic scatterers, and (2) to refine and enhance the coupled-dipole approximation method. 34Polarized Light System For Leitz Laborlux S Microscope (4624457)
By Bogdan Alecsa (Jidvei)
DIY Pol System for Leitz Labourlux S to be used with linear polarization filter foil that can be easily ordered online. Filter foil needs to be cut to size and fit between the parts as in attached pictures. Parts are designed to be a very tight fit using my printer's tolerances so it's very possible to require a bit of filing to fit. Square filter fits into filter drawer on top of the turret and the round filter fits over the light source and can be rotated to achieve polarization effect.

36$\beta$ Pictoris' Inner Disk In Polarized Light And New Orbital Parameters For $\beta$ Pictoris B

We present $H$-band observations of $\beta$ Pic with the Gemini Planet Imager's (GPI's) polarimetry mode that reveal the debris disk between ~0.3" (~6 AU) and ~1.7" (~33 AU), while simultaneously detecting $\beta$ Pic $b$. The polarized disk image was fit with a dust density model combined with a Henyey-Greenstein scattering phase function. The best fit model indicates a disk inclined to the line of sight ($\phi=85.27{\deg}^{+0.26}_{-0.19}$) with a position angle $\theta_{PA}=30.35{\deg}^{+0.29}_{-0.28}$ (slightly offset from the main outer disk, $\theta_{PA}\approx29{\deg}$), that extends from an inner disk radius of $23.6^{+0.9}_{-0.6}$ AU to well outside GPI's field of view. In addition, we present an updated orbit for $\beta$ Pic $b$ based on new astrometric measurements taken in GPI's spectroscopic mode spanning 14 months. The planet has a semi-major axis of $a=9.2^{+1.5}_{-0.4}$AU, with an eccentricity $e\leq 0.26$. The position angle of the ascending node is $\Omega=31.75{\deg}\pm0.15$, offset from both the outer main disk and the inner disk seen in the GPI image. The orbital fit constrains the stellar mass of $\beta$ Pic to $1.60\pm0.05 M_{\odot}$. Dynamical sculpting by $\beta$ Pic $b$ cannot easily account for the following three aspects of the inferred disk properties: 1) the modeled inner radius of the disk is farther out than expected if caused by $\beta$ Pic b; 2) the mutual inclination of the inner disk and $\beta$ Pic $b$ is $4{\deg}$, when it is expected to be closer to zero; and 3) the aspect ratio of the disk ($h_0 = 0.137^{+0.005}_{-0.006}$) is larger than expected from interactions with $\beta$ Pic $b$ or self-stirring by the disk's parent bodies.

37Spin-noise-based Magnetometry Of An $n$-doped GaAs Microcavity In The Field Of Elliptically Polarized Light
By I. I. Ryzhov, G. G. Kozlov, D. S. Smirnov, M. M. Glazov, Yu. P. Efimov, S. A. Eliseev, V. A. Lovtcius, V. V. Petrov, K. V. Kavokin, A. V. Kavokin and V. S. Zapasskii
Recently reported optical nuclear orientation in the $n$-doped GaAs microcavity under pumping in nominal transparency region of the crystal [Appl. Phys. Lett. $\mathbf{106}$, 242405 (2015)] has arisen a number of questions, the main of them concerning mechanisms of angular momentum transfer from the light to the nuclear spin system and the nature of the light-related magnetic fields accompanying the optical nuclear polarization. In this paper, we use the spin noise spectroscopy for magnetometric purposes, particularly, to study effective fields acting upon electron spin system of an $n$-GaAs layer inside a high-Q microcavity in the presence of elliptically polarized probe beam. In addition to the external magnetic field applied to the sample in the Voigt geometry and the Overhauser field created by optically oriented nuclei, the spin noise spectrum reveals an additional effective, "optical," magnetic field produced by elliptically polarized probe itself. This field is directed along the light propagation axis, with its sign being determined by the sign of the probe helicity and its magnitude depending on degree of circular polarization and intensity of the probe beam. We analyze properties of this optical magnetic field and suggest that it results from the optical Stark effect in the field of the elliptically polarized electromagnetic wave.

38The Angular Intensity Correlation Functions $C^{(1)}$ And $C^{(10)}$ For The Scattering Of S-Polarized Light From A One-Dimensional Randomly Rough Dielectric Surface
By Ingve Simonsen, Alexei A. Maradudin and Tamara A. Leskova
We calculate the short-range contributions $C^{(1)}$ and $C^{(10)}$ to the angular intensity correlation function for the scattering of s-polarized light from a one-dimensional random interface between two dielectric media. The calculations are carried out on the basis of a new approach that separates out explicitly the contributions $C^{(1)}$ a nd $C^{(10)}$ to the angular intensity correlation function. The contribution $C^{(1)}$ displays peaks associated with the memory effect and the reciprocal memory effect. In the case of a dielectric-dielectric interface, which does not support surface electromagnetic surface waves, these peaks arise from the co herent interference of multiply-scattered lateral waves supported by the in terface. The contribution $C^{(10)}$ is a structureless function of its arguments.

39Mutual Coherence Of Polarized Light In Disordered Media: Two-Frequency Method Extended
By Albert C. Fannjiang
The paper addresses the two-point correlations of electromagnetic waves in general random, bi-anisotropic media whose constitutive tensors are complex Hermitian, positive- or negative-definite matrices. A simplified version of the two-frequency Wigner distribution (2f-WD) for polarized waves is introduced and the closed form Wigner-Moyal equation is derived from the Maxwell equations. In the weak-disorder regime with an arbitrarily varying background the two-frequency radiative transfer (2f-RT) equations for the associated $2\times 2$ coherence matrices are derived from the Wigner-Moyal equation by using the multiple scale expansion. In birefringent media, the coherence matrix becomes a scalar and the 2f-RT equations take the scalar form due to the absence of depolarization. A paraxial approximation is developed for spatialy anisotropic media. Examples of isotropic, chiral, uniaxial and gyrotropic media are discussed.

43Multiple Scattering Of Polarized Light In Disordered Media Exhibiting Short-range Structural Correlations
By Kevin Vynck, Romain Pierrat and Rémi Carminati
We develop a model based on a multiple scattering theory to describe the diffusion of polarized light in disordered media exhibiting short-range structural correlations. Starting from exact expressions of the average field and the field spatial correlation function, we derive a radiative transfer equation for the polarization-resolved specific intensity that is valid for weak disorder and we solve it analytically in the diffusion limit. A decomposition of the specific intensity in terms of polarization eigenmodes reveals how structural correlations, represented via the standard anisotropic scattering parameter $g$, affect the diffusion of polarized light. More specifically, we find that propagation through each polarization eigenchannel is described by its own transport mean free path that depends on $g$ in a specific and non-trivial way.

45The Magneto-optical Barnett Effect And Spin Momentum Transfer:Magnetization Switching By Circularly Polarized Light
By A. Rebei and J. Hohlfeld
The interaction of polarized light with a spin in the presence of dissipation is shown to be equivalent to a spin transfer process that can cause switching. In plasmas, the spin transfer is dominated by a spin-spin exchange term while at lower energy densities it is dominated by an optical Barnett-like effect. This latter effect is used in conjunction with optical phonons to predict femtosecond magnetization reversal believed to be recently measured in GdCoFe thin films. Conventional approaches based on the Bloch and the Landau-Lifshitz equations do not reproduce this ultrafast switching.

47Electromagnetic Light In Medium Of Polarized Atoms $^3$He
By V. N. Minasyan
First, it is predicted that polarized atoms $^3$He increase a value of speed electromagnetic waves. This reasoning implies that the velocity of electromagnetic waves into gas consisting of polarized atoms $^3$He is rather than one in vacuum.

48Aharonov-Bohm Effect For Excitons In A Semiconductor Quantum Ring Dressed By Circularly Polarized Light
By O. V. Kibis, H. Sigurdsson and I. A. Shelykh
We show theoretically that the strong coupling of circularly polarized photons to an exciton in ring-like semiconductor nanostructures results in physical nonequivalence of clockwise and counterclockwise exciton rotations in the ring. As a consequence, the stationary energy splitting of exciton states corresponding to these mutually opposite rotations appears. This excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect depends on the intensity and frequency of the circularly polarized field and can be detected in state-of-the-art optical experiments.
