1Horizontal And Upward Tau Airshowers In Valleys From Mountains And Space: Discovering UHE Neutrinos And New Physics

By

Upward and horizontal tau Air-showers emerging from the Earth crust or mountain chains are the most powerful signals of Ultra High Energy UHE neutrinos nu_{tau}, bar\nu_{tau} and bar{nu}_e at PeVs and higher energy. The multiplicity in tau Air-showers secondary particles, N_{opt}=10^{12}(E_{tau}/PeV), N_{gamma}= 10^8*E_{tau}/PeV, N_{e^- e^+}= 2*10^7 E_{tau}/PeV, N_{mu}= 3 *10^5 (E_{tau}/PeV)^{0.85} make easy their discover. UHE nu_tau,bar\nu_tau, following Super Kamiokande evidence of neutrino flavor mixing, nu_mu nu_tau, should be as abundant as nu_mu, bar\nu_mu. Also anti-neutrino electrons, bar\nu_e, near the Glashow W resonance energy peak, E_{bar\nu_e} = M^2_W / 2m_e = 6.3*10^{15} eV may generate tau Air-showers. Upward UHE nu_tau- N interaction on Earth crust at horizontal edge and from below, their consequent upward UHE tau air-showers beaming toward high mountains, air-planes, ballons and satellites should flash gamma, mu, X and Cherenkov lights toward detectors. Such upward tau air-shower may already hit nearby satellite GRO gamma detectors flashing them by short, hard, diluted gamma-burst at the edge of BATSE threshold. The tau air-shower may test the UHE neutrino interactions leading to additional fine-tuned test of New TeV Physics both in Mountain Valleys and in Upward showers.

2A Mathematicians' View Of Geometrical Unification Of Classical Physics In High-dimensional Space-time

By

We propose in this paper a mathematicians' view of the Kaluza-Klein idea of a five dimensional space-time unifying gravitation and electromagnetism, and extension to higher-dimensional space-time. By considering the classification of positive Einstein curvature tensors and the classical Cauchy-Choquet-Bruhat theorems in general relativity, we introduce concepts of types and rigidity. Then, abandoning the usual requirement of a Ricci-flat five dimensional space-time, we show that a unified geometrical frame can be set for gravitation and electromagnetism, giving, by projection on the classical 4-dimensional space-time, the known Einstein-Maxwell-Lorentz equations for charged fluids. Thus, although not introducing, at least at this stage, new physics, we get a very aesthetic presentation of classical physics in the spirit of general relativity. The usual physical concepts, such as mass, energy, charge, trajectory, Maxwell-Lorentz law, are shown to be only various aspects of the geometry, for example curvature, of space-time considered as a Lorentzian manifold; that is no physical objects are introduced in space-time, no laws are given, everything is only geometry. We will then extend this setting to more than 5 dimensions, giving a precise mathematical frame for possible additional physical effects, preserving gravitation and electromagnetism.

By

A concise and brief review is given of the solar physics' domain, and how its study has been affected by NASA Space programs which have enabled space based observations. The observations have greatly increased the knowledge of solar physics by proving some theories and challenging others. Many questions remain unanswered. To exploit coming opportunities like the Space Station, solar physics must continue its advances in instrument development, observational techniques, and basic theory. Even with the Advance Solar Observatory, other space based observation will still be required for the sure to be ensuing questions.

7Tubes Of Magnetic Flux And Electric Current In Space Physics

By

The singularities of an irrotational magnetic field are lines of electric current. This property derives from the relationship between vector fields and the topology of the underlying three-space and allows for a definition of {cosmic field} flux tubes and flux ropes as \textit{cores} (in the sense of the physics of defects) of helical singularities. When applied to force-free flux ropes, and assuming current conservation, an interesting feature is the quantization of the radii, pitches, and helicities. One expects similar quantization effects in the general case. In the special case when the total electric current vanishes, a force-free rope embedded in a medium devoid of magnetic field is nonetheless topologically stable, because it is the core of a singularity of the vector potential. Magnetic merging is also discussed in the same framework.

10NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20050177227: Physics Of Hard Spheres Experiment (PhaSE) Or "Making Jello In Space"

By

The Physics of Hard Spheres Experiment (PHaSE) is a highly successful experiment that flew aboard two shuttle missions to study the transitions involved in the formation of jellolike colloidal crystals in a microgravity environment. A colloidal suspension, or colloid, consists of fine particles, often having complex interactions, suspended in a liquid. Paint, ink, and milk are examples of colloids found in everyday life. In low Earth orbit, the effective force of gravity is thousands of times less than at the Earth's surface. This provides researchers a way to conduct experiments that cannot be adequately performed in an Earth-gravity environment. In microgravity, colloidal particles freely interact without the complications of settling that occur in normal gravity on Earth. If the particle interactions within these colloidal suspensions could be predicted and accurately modeled, they could provide the key to understanding fundamental problems in condensed matter physics and could help make possible the development of wonderful new "designer" materials. Industries that make semiconductors, electro-optics, ceramics, and composites are just a few that may benefit from this knowledge. Atomic interactions determine the physical properties (e.g., weight, color, and hardness) of ordinary matter. PHaSE uses colloidal suspensions of microscopic solid plastic spheres to model the behavior of atomic interactions. When uniformly sized hard spheres suspended in a fluid reach a certain concentration (volume fraction), the particle-fluid mixture changes from a disordered fluid state, in which the spheres are randomly organized, to an ordered "crystalline" state, in which they are structured periodically. The thermal energy of the spheres causes them to form ordered arrays, analogous to crystals. Seven of the eight PHaSE samples ranged in volume fraction from 0.483 to 0.624 to cover the range of interest, while one sample, having a concentration of 0.019, was included for instrument calibration.

Tasks performed in the development of an ice nucleus generator which, within the facility concept of the ACPL, would provide a test aerosol suitable for a large number and variety of potential experiments are described. The impact of Atmospheric Cloud Physics Laboratory scientific functional requirements on ice nuclei generation and characterization subsystems was established. Potential aerosol generating systems were evaluated with special emphasis on reliability, repeatability and general suitability for application in Spacelab. Possible contamination problems associated with aerosol generation techniques were examined. The ice nucleating abilities of candidate test aerosols were examined and the possible impact of impurities on the nucleating abilities of those aerosols were assessed as well as the relative merits of various methods of aerosol size and number density measurements.

14NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19750006718: Fluid Physics, Thermodynamics, And Heat Transfer Experiments In Space

By

An overstudy committee was formed to study and recommend fundamental experiments in fluid physics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer for experimentation in orbit, using the space shuttle system and a space laboratory. The space environment, particularly the low-gravity condition, is an indispensable requirement for all the recommended experiments. The experiments fell broadly into five groups: critical-point thermophysical phenomena, fluid surface dynamics and capillarity, convection at reduced gravity, non-heated multiphase mixtures, and multiphase heat transfer. The Committee attempted to assess the effects of g-jitter and other perturbations of the gravitational field on the conduct of the experiments. A series of ground-based experiments are recommended to define some of the phenomena and to develop reliable instrumentation.

investigation that will be located in an Expedite the Process of Experiments to Space Station (EXPRESS) Rack. The investigation will be conducted in the International Space Station U.S. laboratory, Destiny, over a period of approximately 10 months during the station assembly period from flight 6A through flight UF-2. This experiment will gather data on the basic physical properties of colloids by studying three different colloid systems with the objective of understanding how they grow and what structures they form. A colloidal suspension consists of fine particles (micrometer to submicrometer) suspended in a fluid for example, paints, milk, salad dressings, and aerosols. The long-term goal of this investigation is to learn how to steer the growth of colloidal suspensions to create new materials and new structures. This experiment is part of a two-stage investigation conceived by Professor David Weitz of Harvard University along with Professor Peter Pusey of the University of Edinburgh. The experiment hardware was developed by the NASA Glenn Research Center through contracts with Dynacs, Inc., and ZIN Technologies.

18Nonlinear Dynamics Of Phase Space Zonal Structures And Energetic Particle Physics In Fusion Plasmas

By

A general theoretical framework for investigating nonlinear dynamics of phase space zonal structures is presented in this work. It is then, more specifically, applied to the limit where the nonlinear evolution time scale is smaller or comparable to the wave-particle trapping period. In this limit, both theoretical and numerical simulation studies show that non-adiabatic frequency chirping and phase locking could lead to secular resonant particle transport on meso- or macro-scales. The interplay between mode structures and resonant particles then provides the crucial ingredient to properly understand and analyze the nonlinear dynamics of Alfv\'en wave instabilities excited by non-perturbative energetic particles in burning fusion plasmas. Analogies with autoresonance in nonlinear dynamics and with superradiance in free electron lasers are also briefly discussed.

19Concepts Of Space The History Of Theories Of Space In Physics

20A Hitch-hiker's Guide To Stochastic Differential Equations: Solution Methods For Energetic Particle Transport In Space Physics And Astrophysics

By

In this review, an overview of the recent history of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) in application to particle transport problems in space physics and astrophysics is given. The aim is to present a helpful working guide to the literature and at the same time introduce key principles of the SDE approach via "toy models". Using these examples, we hope to provide an easy way for newcomers to the field to use such methods in their own research. Aspects covered are the solar modulation of cosmic rays, diffusive shock acceleration, galactic cosmic ray propagation and solar energetic particle transport. We believe that the SDE method, due to its simplicity and computational efficiency on modern computer architectures, will be of significant relevance in energetic particle studies in the years to come.

22NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19870010638: Technical Issues In The Conduct Of Large Space Platform Experiments In Plasma Physics And Geoplasma Sciences

By

Large, permanently-manned space platforms can provide exciting opportunities for discoveries in basic plasma and geoplasma sciences. The potential for these discoveries will depend very critically on the properties of the platform, its subsystems, and their abilities to fulfill a spectrum of scientific requirements. With this in mind, the planning of space station research initiatives and the development of attendant platform engineering should allow for the identification of critical science and technology issues that must be clarified far in advance of space station program implementation. An attempt is made to contribute to that process, with a perspective that looks to the development of the space station as a permanently-manned Spaceborne Ionospheric Weather Station. The development of this concept requires a synergism of science and technology which leads to several critical design issues. To explore the identification of these issues, the development of the concept of an Ionospheric Weather Station will necessarily touch upon a number of diverse areas. These areas are discussed.

By

This final report describes a brief summary of our accomplishments during the complete contract period. Traditionally, due to computational limitations, it has been impossible to obtain a global view of the magnetosphere on ion time and spatial scales. As a result, kinetic-simulations have concentrated on the local structure of different magnetospheric discontinuities and boundaries. However, due to the emergence of low cost supercomputers, as well as by taking full advantage of latest advances in data mining and visualization technology, we were able to bypass our planned (proposed) regional simulations and proceed to large-scale 3-D and 2-D global hybrid simulations of the magnetosphere. As a result, although we are only finishing the second year of the proposed activity, much of the original scientific objectives have been surpassed and new avenues of investigation have been opened. Such simulations have led us to possible explanations of some long-standing issues in magnetospheric physics. They have also enables us to make a number of important discoveries predictions, which need to be looked for in satellite data. Examples include the finding that the bow shock can become unstable to the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH), (2) the discovery of a mechanism for intermittent reconnection due to ion physics which may be relevant to the explanation of the recurrence rate of flux transfer events (FTEs), and (3) this finding that the current sheet in the near-Earth magnetotail region can become unstable to KH with detectable, unique ionospheric signatures. Further, we demonstrated a viable mechanism for the onset of reconnection at the magnetopause, examined the detailed structure of the boundary layer incorporating curvature effects, and provided an explanation for the large core fields observed within FTEs as well as flux ropes in the magnetotail.

28Fundamental Physics In Space With The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope

By

Successfully launched in June 2008, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, formerly named GLAST, has been observing the high-energy gamma-ray sky with unprecedented sensitivity for more than two years, opening a new window on a wide variety of exotic astrophysical objects. This paper is a short overview of the main science highlights, aimed at non-specialists, with emphasis on those which are more directly connected with the study of fundamental physics---particularly the search for signals of new physics in the diffuse gamma-ray emission and in the cosmic radiation and the study of Gamma-Ray Burst as laboratories for testing possible violations of the Lorentz invariance.

29The Mathematical Role Of Time And Space-time In Classical Physics

By

We use Padoa's principle of independence of primitive symbols in axiomatic systems in order to discuss the mathematical role of time and space-time in some classical physical theories. We show that time is eliminable in Newtonian mechanics and that space-time is also dispensable in Hamiltonian mechanics, Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, the Dirac electron, classical gauge fields, and general relativity.

30NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20020032299: Physics Of Colloids In Space-2 (PCS-2)

By

The Physics of Colloids-2 (PCS-2) experiment is aimed at investigating the basic physical properties of several types of colloidal suspensions. The three broad classes of colloidal systems of interest are binary colloids, colloid-polymer mixtures, and fractal gels. The objective is to understand their phase behavior as well as the kinetics of the phase transitions in the absence of gravity. The nucleation, growth, and morphology characteristics of the crystals and gels that form would be studied using confocal microscopy. These will be observed directly with excellent time resolution, and therefore extensive information about the different phases and their growth mechanisms will be gained. With the laser tweezers, it will be possible to measure the strength of these structures and to modify them in a controlled way, and the spectrophotometer will provide the possibility to probe their optical properties. We believe that this experiment will provide the basis for future 'colloid engineering' in which complicated structures with novel properties (e.g., photonic crystals) will be grown by controlled self-assembly.

32DTIC ADA391287: Physics Of Space-Related Effects In Multiple-Quantum Well Photonic Devices

By

The objective of this program is to understand the effects of space radiation on multiple-quantum-well (MQW) photonic devices through a coordinated program of experimental characterization, analysis, and modeling. The work has focused on MQW laser diodes. Photonic devices based on MQW technology are widespread in both commercial and military applications. Such devices and systems offer an ideal opportunity for understanding the effects of the space radiation environment on nano-structures and provide insight into the physics of radiation effects on a class of devices that will revolutionize future electronic and optoelectronic systems. In this program, we have looked at proton-irradiation effects in MQW laser diodes, quantum dots, and high-electron mobility transistors. Irradiation has been performed using high-energy protons because they produce both long-term ionization damage and displacement damage.

35Precision Electroweak Physics And Higgsless Models In Warped Space

By

We study tree level corrections to precision electroweak physics in the recently proposed Higgsless models in warped space. Such models inherit from their similarity with technicolor theories a large contribution to the oblique parameters, S in particular. We show that it is possible to suppress S using brane induced kinetic terms and unequal left-right bulk gauge couplings, paying the price of heavy KK modes. In the allowed region, they are eventually ineffective in restoring perturbative unitarity in W scattering above 2 TeV. Although it looks like a Higgsless models' bane, it has been recently shown that such problem can be easily solved delocalizing the light fermions.

36Physics Geometrization In Microcosm: Discrete Space-time And Relativity Theory

By

The presented paper is a review of papers on the microcosm physics geometrization in the last twenty years. These papers develop a new direction of the microcosm physics. It is so-called geometric paradigm, which is alternative to the quantum paradigm, which is conventionally used now. The hypothesis on discreteness of the space-time geometry appears to be more fundamental, than the hypothesis on quantum nature of microcosm. Discrete space-time geometry admits one to describe quantum effects as pure geometric effects. Mathematical technique of the microcosm physics geometrization (geometric paradigm) is based on the physical geometry, which is described completely by the world function. Equations, describing motion of particles in the microcosm, are algebraic (not differential) equations. They are written in a coordinateless form in terms of world function. The geometric paradigm appeared as a result of overcoming of inconsistency of the conventional elementary particle theory. In the suggested skeleton conception the state of an elementary particle is described by its skeleton (several space-time points). The skeleton contains all information on the particle properties (mass, charge, spin, etc.). The skeleton conception is a monistic construction, where elementary particle motion is described in terms of skeleton and world function and only in these terms. The skeleton conception can be constructed only on the basis of the physical geometry. Unfortunately, most mathematicians do not accept the physical geometries, because these geometries are nonaxiomatizable. It is a repetition of the case, when mathematicians did not accept the non-Euclidean geometries of Lobachevsky-Bolyai. As a result this review is a review of papers of one author.

39Probing Planckian Physics In De Sitter Space With Quantum Correlations

By

We study the quantum correlations of both free scalar and fermionic field in de Sitter space, while the Planckian modification presented by choice of a particular {\alpha}-vacuum has been considered. We show the occurrence of degradation of quantum entanglement and quantum discord between field modes for inertial observer in curved space, due to the radiation associated with cosmological horizon. In particular, comparing with standard Bunch-Davies choice, the possible Planckian physics causes some extra decrement on the quantum correlation, which may provides the means to detect quantum gravitational effects via quantum information methodology in future.

40AMS-02 In Space: Physics Results, Overview, And Challenges

By

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a state of the art particle detector measuring cosmic rays (CRs) on the International Space Station (ISS) since May 19th 2011. AMS-02 identifies CR leptons and nuclei in the energy range from hundreds MeV to few TeV per nucleon. Several sub-detector systems allow for redundant particle identification with unprecedented precision, a powerful lepton-hadron separation, and a high purity of the antimatter signal. The new AMS-02 leptonic data from 1 to 500 GeV are presented and discussed. These new data indicate that new sources of CR leptons need to be included to describe the observed spectra at high energies. Explanations of this anomaly may be found either in dark-matter particles annihilation or in the existence of nearby astrophysical sources of $e^{\pm}$. Future data at higher energies and forthcoming measurements on the antiproton spectrum and the boron-to-carbon ratio will be crucial in providing the discrimination among the different scenario.

45Flavor Physics And Fine-Tuning In Theory Space

By

Recently a new class of composite Higgs models have been developed which give rise to naturally light Higgs bosons without supersymmetry. Based on the chiral symmetries of ``theory space,'' involving replicated gauge groups and appropriate gauge symmetry breaking patterns, these models allow the scale of the underlying strong dynamics giving rise to the composite particles to be as large as of order 10 TeV, without any fine tuning to prevent large corrections to Higgs boson mass(es) of order 100 GeV. In this note we show that the size of flavor violating interactions arising generically from underlying flavor dynamics constrain the scale of the Higgs boson compositeness to be greater than of order 75 TeV, implying that significant fine-tuning is required. Without fine-tuning, the low-energy structure of the composite Higgs model alone is not sufficient to eliminate potential problems with flavor-changing neutral currents or excessive CP violation; solving those problems requires additional information or assumptions about the symmetries of the underlying flavor or strong dynamics. We also consider the weaker, but more model-independent, bounds which arise from limits on weak isospin violation.

46High Energy Electromagnetic Cascades In Extragalactic Space: Physics And Features

By

Using the analytic modeling of the electromagnetic cascades compared with more precise numerical simulations we describe the physical properties of electromagnetic cascades developing in the universe on CMB and EBL background radiations. A cascade is initiated by very high energy photon or electron and the remnant photons at large distance have two-component energy spectrum, $\propto E^{-2}$ ($\propto E^{-1.9}$ in numerical simulations) produced at cascade multiplication stage, and $\propto E^{-3/2}$ from Inverse Compton electron cooling at low energies. The most noticeable property of the cascade spectrum in analytic modeling is 'strong universality', which includes the standard energy spectrum and the energy density of the cascade $\omega_{\rm cas}$ as its only numerical parameter. Using numerical simulations of the cascade spectrum and comparing it with recent Fermi LAT spectrum we obtained the upper limit on $\omega_{\rm cas}$ stronger than in previous works. The new feature of the analysis is "$E_{\max}$ rule". We investigate the dependence of $\omega_{\rm cas}$ on the distribution of sources, distinguishing two cases of universality: the strong and weak ones.

47Bruno Rossi And Cosmic Rays: From Earth Laboratories To Physics In Space

By

Rossi's career paralleled the evolution of cosmic-ray physics. Starting from the early 1930s his pioneering work on the nature and behavior of cosmic rays led to fundamental contributions in the field of experimental cosmic-ray physics and laid the foundation for high-energy particle physics. After the war, under his leadership the Cosmic Ray group at MIT investigated the properties of the primary cosmic rays elucidating the processes involved in their propagation through the atmosphere, and measuring the unstable particles generated in the interactions with matter. When accelerators came to dominate particle physics, Rossi's attention focused on the new opportunities for exploratory investigations made possible by the availability of space vehicles. He initiated a research program which led to the first in situ measurements of the density, speed and direction of the solar wind at the boundary of Earth's magnetosphere and inspired the search for extra-solar X-ray sources resulting in the detection of what revealed to be the most powerful X-ray source in Earth's skies. The discovery of Scorpius X-1 marked the beginning of X-ray astronomy, which soon became a principal tool of astrophysics research.

49Phase Separation During The Experiment On Physics Of Colloids In Space

By

Still photographs taken over 16 hours on Nov. 13, 2001, on the International Space Station have been condensed into a few seconds to show the de-mixing -- or phase separation -- process studied by the Experiment on Physics of Colloids in Space. Commanded from the ground, dozens of similar tests have been conducted since the experiment arrived on ISS in 2000. The sample is a mix of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA or acrylic) colloids, polystyrene polymers and solvents. The circular area is 2 cm (0.8 in.) in diameter. The phase separation process occurs spontaneously after the sample is mechanically mixed. The evolving lighter regions are rich in colloid and have the structure of a liquid. The dark regions are poor in colloids and have the structure of a gas. This behavior carnot be observed on Earth because gravity causes the particles to fall out of solution faster than the phase separation can occur. While similar to a gas-liquid phase transition, the growth rate observed in this test is different from any atomic gas-liquid or liquid-liquid phase transition ever measured experimentally. Ultimately, the sample separates into colloid-poor and colloid-rich areas, just as oil and vinegar separate. The fundamental science of de-mixing in this colloid-polymer sample is the same found in the annealing of metal alloys and plastic polymer blends. Improving the understanding of this process may lead to improving processing of these materials on Earth.
