3DTIC ADA380711: A Fast Algorithm For Computing Scattered Fields Using Physical Optics Equivalent Approximation In Half-Space

In this report, a fast algorithm for computing scattered fields with the use of physical optics (PO) equivalent approximation in half-space is presented. The theoretical basis for the algorithm and the derivation of formulas used in the algorithm is presented. The algorithm is used to compute the radar cross sections (RCSs) of several objects. The RCS of the objects computed by the algorithm is compared with those that were computed with the method of moments (MOM). The results presented are found to be accurate when the target dimensions are greater than or equal to 2 lamba, where lamba denotes the wavelength. It is concluded that the PO algorithm presented in this report can be used for majority of applications as it captured all the salient features of the targets.

By mounting small disc reflectors that are moveable relative to the inner reflector surface of a parabolic dish antenna, nulls can be generated in the side lobe region of the power radiation pattern with minimal distortion effects to the main beam. A physical optics model of this antenna system is developed to investigate in a simplified direct manner the phenomena of phase nulling caused by disc movement. Array theory using isotropic radiators is used to sample the aperture distribution to approximate the far field electric field of the dish. A physical optics approximation for scattering off a flat metal disc is used for discs and feed blockage effects. (Theses)

Formulations for scattering from the coated plate and the coated dihedral corner reflector are included. A coated plate model based upon the Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD) for impedance wedges was presented in the last report. In order to resolve inaccuracies and discontinuities in the predicted patterns using the UTD-based model, an improved model that uses more accurate diffraction coefficients is presented. A Physical Optics (PO) model for the coated dihedral corner reflector is presented as an intermediary step in developing a high-frequency model for this structure. The PO model is based upon the reflection coefficients for a metal-backed lossy material. Preliminary PO results for the dihedral corner reflector suggest that, in addition to being much faster computationally, this model may be more accurate than existing moment method (MM) models. An improved Physical Optics (PO)/Equivalent Currents model for modeling the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of both square and triangular, perfectly conducting, trihedral corner reflectors is presented. The new model uses the PO approximation at each reflection for the first- and second-order reflection terms. For the third-order reflection terms, a Geometrical Optics (GO) approximation is used for the first reflection; and PO approximations are used for the remaining reflections. The previously reported model used GO for all reflections except the terminating reflection. Using PO for most of the reflections results in a computationally slower model because many integrations must be performed numerically, but the advantage is that the predicted RCS using the new model is much more accurate. Comparisons between the two PO models, Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) and experimental data are presented for validation of the new model.

Physical optics scattering calculations performed on the DSN 34-m beam-waveguide antennas at Ka-band (32 GHz) require approximately 12 hr of central processing unit time on a Cray Y-MP2 computer. This is excessive in terms of resource utilization and turnaround time. Typically, the calculations involve five surfaces, and the calculations are done two surfaces at a time. The sampling theorem is used to reduce the number of current values that must be calculated over the second surface by performing a physical optics integration over the first surface. The additional number of current values required on the second surface by subsequent physical optics integrations is obtained by interpolation over the original current values. Time improvements on the order of a factor of 2 to 4 were obtained for typical scattering pairs.

10Development Of Code For A Physical Optics Radar Cross Section Prediction And Analysis Application

The significance of the Radar Cross Section (RCS) in the outcome of military engagements makes its prediction an important problem in modern Electronic Warfare. The POFACETS program, previously developed at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), uses the Physical Optics method to predict the RCS of complex targets, which are modeled with the use of triangular facets. The program has minimum computer resource requirements and provides convenient run-times. This thesis upgraded, enhanced and expanded the functionalities and capabilities of the POFACETS program. The new functionalities were implemented by upgrading the Graphical User Interface and model database, allowing the creation of models with an unlimited number of facets, providing capabilities for the automatic creation of models with standard geometric shapes, allowing the combination of existing target models, providing capabilities for sharing target models with commercial CAD programs, and creating new display formats for RCS results. The new computational capabilities include the development of a user- updateable database of materials and coatings that can be applied to models in one or multiple layers, and the computation of their effects on the models' RCS. Also implemented are the computations of the ground's effect on the RCS, and the exploitation of symmetry planes in models, in order to decrease run-time for RCS prediction.

In the theory of Physical Optics the field scattered by a curved reflecting surface S is represented by an integral whose numerical evaluation is difficult. Two methods for calculating this integral are discussed: A Monte Carlo method and the method by Facet Decomposition. The first is limited by round-off error whereas the second is limited by computer storage and CPU running time. The Facet Decomposition method is exact when S is flat, and is superior to the Monte Carlo method when S is only 'slightly curved' according to a certain criterion. (Author)

A physical optics approximation to the monostatic and bistatic scattering for axial incidence from rotationally symmetric targets is developed. Both conducting and lossy dielectric bodies, characterized by a surface impedance equal to the intrinsic impedance of the scattering medium, are treated. The resulting general expressions, which are valid within the physical optics approximation for any rotationally symmetric target, are specialized to long, thin, shapes, either finite with sharp apices or semi infinite with a sharp apex, by a modification of the normal physical optics approximation. Theoretical calculations of the axial back scatter from spheres, double cones, parabolic ogives, semi-infinite cones, and semi-infinite cylinders with conical caps for several values of the scatterer surface impedance are presented. Theoretical calculations of the bistatic E plane (plane of the incident E field) cross-section of conducting semi-infinite cones, double cones, and semi-infinite cylinders with conical caps are also given. Where possible, the theoretical results are compared with the exact solution or with representative experimental data to indicate the validity of the theory.

We proposed new design concepts and solutions for non-paraxial quasi-optical dielectric lenses that exceed in performance more conventional approaches. One of new advances is the use of optimized dual-aspheric surfaces for dielectric lenses which allow one to minimize (and equalize) the refraction angles at the lens opposite surfaces. This reduces the total on-axis thickness of the lens which is important under the conditions of significant non-paraxial operation of the lens. In addition, this also reduces the aberrations of polarization pattern in the image domain. Another advance is the use of split-step double-sided Fresnel profile of the lens along with optimized dual-aspheric shape of lens surfaces between the Fresnel steps. This design solution should further reduce both the lens thickness and possible aberrations as compared to more conventional solutions. For the electromagnetic analysis and simulation of dielectric lenses of complicated shape and design, we have proposed a new kind of asymptotic hybrid approach that combines both the wave-based and ray-tracing approximations in an improved manner which is based on the use of newly proposed extended physical optics (EPO) diffraction integral formulation specifically created for the modeling of quasi-optical components with curvilinear refractive surfaces. We also made focal field measurements of double-sided split-step dual-aspheric mm-wave Fresnel lenses designed for producing well-shaped Gaussian beams in the focal domain. Two lenses, one of Teflon and another of polyamide, were compared in their performance with a double-sided Fresnel lens of different design, with full height of Fresnel steps. We confirm a good focusing ability of all the lenses. They produced the target beam width according to the design. Yet, the lenses of split-step design are thinner, have lower insertion losses, and a greater focal depth as compared to more conventional Fresnel lenses.

1) To improve performance of the coupled physical-biological model, which is based on the Navy Coastal Ocean Model (NCOM) and Regional Ocean Model System (ROMS) for the California Current System (CCS); 2) To incorporate optical variables into the improved coupled 3D physical-biological model for the CCS; 3) To use these variables to drive a radiative transfer model (EcoLight) that will simulate and predict the subsurface light field as well as the ocean's color; 4) To conduct NCOM-biological-optical model simulations for the Monterey Bay for the period of the intensive field experiments, such as BioSpace in Monterey Bay 2008 (June 2008), and use the biooptical measurements to constrain and improve the model performance.

We present physical optics simulations of the dual-reflector submillimetre-wave telescope on the ESA PLANCK surveyor. The telescope is of a non-conventional Gregorian configuration, with two ellipsoidal reflectors providing a very large field of view at the focal plane where the array of 76 horn antennas feeding low-temperature detectors is located. We analyze defocusing effects of the system, polarization characteristics of the telescope, and the optical performance of high-frequency channels based on special multi-mode horns operating at 545 and 857 GHz.

We present physical optics simulations of the dual-reflector submillimetre-wave telescope on the ESA PLANCK surveyor. The telescope is of a non-conventional Gregorian configuration, with two ellipsoidal reflectors providing a very large field of view at the focal plane where the array of 76 horn antennas feeding low-temperature detectors is located. We analyze defocusing effects of the system, polarization characteristics of the telescope, and the optical performance of high-frequency channels based on special multi-mode horns operating at 545 and 857 GHz.

This report describes a digital computer program which uses the physical optics approximation to calculate the scattering properties of convex perfectly conducting targets with arbitrary shape. The target shape is described in terms of the coordinates of a large number of points on the surface. The program handles bistatic as well as backscattering problems. The input data specify the frequency, the incidence angles and the scattering angles. In the CW case, the output data give the complex elements in the scattering matrix. The program also handles the pulse case where the incident waveform has a finite number of cycles. Graphs are included to illustrate typical results for the following target shapes: sphere, spheroids, ogive, and cone.

Modeling and predicting ocean optical properties for coastal waters requires linking optical properties with the physical, chemical, and biological processes in the upper ocean. Our long-term goal is to incorporate optical processes into coupled physical-biological models for coastal waters, develop and improve integrated ocean forecasting systems, including prediction of ocean optical properties. 1) To improve performance of the coupled physical-biological model, which is based on the Regional Ocean Model System (ROMS), for the Monterey Bay; 2) To incorporate optical variables into a one-dimensional (1D) physical-biological as well as the improved coupled 3D physical-biological model for the Monterey Bay; 3) To use these variable to drive a radiative transfer model (HydroLight/EcoLight) that will simulate and predict the subsurface light field as well as the ocean's color; 4) To conduct ROMS-biological-optical model simulations for the Monterey Bay with focus on two intensive field experiments, ANOS II (August 2003) and Monterey Bay 2006 (August 2006), and use the bio-optical measurements to constrain and improve the models.
