1ERIC ED366914: Does Parallel Distributed Processing Provide A Plausible Framework For Modeling Early Reading Acquisition?

By

A study compared a parallel distributed processing (PDP) model with a more traditional symbolic information processing model that accounts for early reading acquisition by human subjects. Two experimental paradigms were simulated. In one paradigm (a "savings" paradigm) subjects were divided into two groups and trained with two sets of stimuli: consistent orthographic representation of voicing, or inconsistent mapping of orthography onto voicing. A total of 32 simulated trials were generated with each model. Analysis of the savings paradigm data for the symbolic model revealed no significant main or interaction effects. Analysis of the PDP data revealed significant main and interaction effects. A second paradigm involved a forced-choice task testing subjects' ability to make use of analytic generalization. A total of eight simulated trials were generated with each model. Analysis indicated no significant difference between the symbolic model and chance performance, while the PDP model had perfect performance, indicating that the network had learned to make use of the orthography-voicing relationship implicit in the stimuli. Findings suggest that, in the domain of early reading acquisition, the problem with the PDP model approach is not that it is too weak but that it is too strong--even the simplest PDP models exhibit learning beyond what is observed in human subjects faced with similar learning tasks. (Contains 18 references. An appendix of data is attached.) (RS)

2Matrix Distributed Processing: A Set Of C++ Tools For Implementing Generic Lattice Computations On Parallel Systems

By

We present a set of programming tools (classes and functions written in C++ and based on Message Passing Interface) for fast development of generic parallel (and non-parallel) lattice simulations. They are collectively called MDP 1.2. These programming tools include classes and algorithms for matrices, random number generators, distributed lattices (with arbitrary topology), fields and parallel iterations. No previous knowledge of MPI is required in order to use them. Some applications in electromagnetism, electronics, condensed matter and lattice QCD are presented.

5NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20010110776: Distributed Parallel Processing And Dynamic Load Balancing Techniques For Multidisciplinary High Speed Aircraft Design

By

Multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) for large-scale engineering problems poses many challenges (e.g., the design of an efficient concurrent paradigm for global optimization based on disciplinary analyses, expensive computations over vast data sets, etc.) This work focuses on the application of distributed schemes for massively parallel architectures to MDO problems, as a tool for reducing computation time and solving larger problems. The specific problem considered here is configuration optimization of a high speed civil transport (HSCT), and the efficient parallelization of the embedded paradigm for reasonable design space identification. Two distributed dynamic load balancing techniques (random polling and global round robin with message combining) and two necessary termination detection schemes (global task count and token passing) were implemented and evaluated in terms of effectiveness and scalability to large problem sizes and a thousand processors. The effect of certain parameters on execution time was also inspected. Empirical results demonstrated stable performance and effectiveness for all schemes, and the parametric study showed that the selected algorithmic parameters have a negligible effect on performance.

8Application Of Parallel Distributed Processing To Space Based Systems

By

The concept of using Parallel Distributed Processing (PDP) to enhance automated experiment monitoring and control is explored. Recent very large scale integration (VLSI) advances have made such applications an achievable goal. The PDP machine has demonstrated the ability to automatically organize stored information, handle unfamiliar and contradictory input data and perform the actions necessary. The PDP machine has demonstrated that it can perform inference and knowledge operations with greater speed and flexibility and at lower cost than traditional architectures. In applications where the rule set governing an expert system's decisions is difficult to formulate, PDP can be used to extract rules by associating the information an expert receives with the actions taken.

16Distributed Big Data Analysis Using Spark Parallel Data Processing

By

Nowadays, the big data marketplace is rising rapidly. The big challenge is finding a system that can store and handle a huge size of data and then processing that huge data for mining the hidden knowledge. This paper proposed a compr ehensive system that is used for improving big data analysis performance. It contains a fast big data processing engine using Apache Spark and a big data storage environment using Apache Hadoop. The system tests about 11 Gigabytes of text data which are co llected from multiple sources for sentiment analysis. Three different machine learning (ML) algorithms are used in this system which is already supported by the Spark ML package. The system programs were written in Java and Scala programming languages and the constructed model consists of the classification algorithms as well as the pre - processing steps in a figure of ML pipeline . The proposed system was implemented in both central and distributed data processing. Moreover, some datasets manipulation manner s have been applied in the system tests to check which manner provides the best accuracy and time performance. The results showed that the system works efficiently for treating big data, it gains excellent accuracy with fast execution time especially in th e distributed data nodes.

By

Research in the area of distributed computing systems for digital signal processing applications is described. The work involves the modeling of asynchronous parallel processes and computer systems for executing these processes. The objective of the work is to develop techniques by which the compatibility of an architecture and an algorithm can be evaluated. The three part effort addresses: 1. Modeling of asynchronous parallel computer system architectures; 2. Modeling of asynchronous parallel computational processes; 3. Evaluation of alternative architectures relative to classes of computational the approach to the modeling of parallel processes and architectures is to examined the parallelism in a variety of one- and two-dimensional signal processing tasks. This includes a study of the ways in which different types of digital signal processing tasks can be executed on different types of architectures. The goal is to develop one set of features by which processes can be characterized, and another set of features by which parallel architectures can be characterized: and to use these features to obtain measures for the evaluation of process/architecture compatibility. This research will contribute to the understanding both of how distributed computer systems can be designed for the execution of a class of tasks, and of how signal processing tasks can be decomposed for execution on a distributed computing system. As the capabilities of computing machinery grow, so does the diverse variety of their applications. The feasibility of many approaches to these applications depends solely upon the existence of computing machinery capable of performing these tasks within a given time constraint. Because the majority of the available computing machinery is general purpose in nature, tasks that do not require purpose facilities, but that do require high throughput, are condemned to execution on expensive general purpose hardware. This research describes several tasks that require fast computing machinery. These tasks do not require general purpose facilities in the sense that the computing machinery used will only perform a fixed set of tasks. Some of the tasks are simple in nature, but are required to execute on very large data sets. Other tasks are computationally intensive in addition to possibly involving large data sets. Both simple and complex algorithms are considered. The discussion includes a description of the tasks. All of the above tasks are useful; however, their value is determined in part by the time required to perform them. This work discusses three architectures for performing remote sensing tasks. These architectures can execute the described tasks more quickly than conventionally available hardware.

24DTIC ADA377689: Parallel And Distributed Algorithms For High-Speed Image Processing

By

Typical desktop workstations can be a severe bottleneck in the viewing and enhancement of imagery data. Due to the nature of many image processing algorithms, an effective method for alleviating this problem is through parallelism. Parallel hardware can come in many forms, from small clusters of workstations and workstations with many processors to dedicated hardware containing 10's, 100's and 1000's of processing nodes. One of the challenges is developing a portable parallel image processing library in such a potentially diverse environment. These issues led to the development of a Parallel Image Processing Toolkit (PIPT). The toolkit hides the detail of parallelization from the users of the PIPT and provides a uniform programming interface. In developing the toolkit the issues of advanced data handling, load, balancing and parallel visualization were addressed. In addition a specific computationally expensive High Resolution Video Stills algorithm was implemented within the PIPT. The important contributions that resulted from this work transcend the individual tasks that were undertaken. First, the general approach that was taken to implement the PIPT illustrates several important principles for the design and implementation of general purpose parallel libraries. in this regard, the PIPT design can serve as a design pattern for an extensible parallel library. Second, the design pattern of the current implementation of the PIPT contains some notable attempts at programming image processing tasks in a generic fashion.

25DTIC ADA218886: Sentence Comprehension: A Parallel Distributed Processing Approach

By

Basic aspects are reviewed of conventional approaches to sentence comprehension and point out are some of the difficulties faced by models that take these approaches. An alternative approach is described, based on the principles of parallel distributed processing, and shown how it offers different answers to basic questions about the nature of the language processing mechanism. An illustrative simulation model captures the key characteristics of the approach, and illustrates how it can cope with the difficulties faced by conventional models. Alternative ways of conceptualizing basic aspects of language processing within the framework of this approach will consider how it can address several arguments that might be brought to bear against it, and suggest avenues for future development. Keywords: Neural networks; Connectionist models; Language comprehension; Language acquisition.

26Distributed Parallel Processing And Dynamic Load Balancing Techniques For Multidisciplinary High Speed Aircraft Design

28DTIC ADA462125: Neural And Conceptual Interpretations Of Parallel Distributed Processing Models

By

Mind and brain provide two quite different perspectives for viewing cognition. Yet both perspectives are informed by the study of parallel distributed processing. This duality creates a certain ambiguity about the interpretation of a particular PDP model of a cognitive process: Is each processing unit to be interpreted as a neuron? Is the model supposed to relate to the neural implementation of the process in some less direct way? A closely related set of questions arises when it is observed that PDP models of cognitive processing divide broadly into two classes. In local models, the activity of a single unit represents the degree of participation in the processing of a known conceptual entity a word, a word sense, a phoneme, a motor program. In distributed models, the strength of patterns of activity over many units determine the degree of participation of these conceptual entities. In some models, these patterns are chosen in a deliberately arbitrary way, so that the activity of a single unit has no apparent meaning whatever -- no discernible relation to the conceptual entities involved in the cognitive process. On the surface, at least, these two types of models seem quite different. Are they as different as they seem? How are they related? This chapter begins with a brief consideration of the neural interpretation of PDP models of cognition. These considerations serve mostly to lay out a certain perspective on the PDP modeling world, to make some distinctions I have found to be valuable, to introduce some terminology and to lead into the main question of this chapter: How are distributed and local PDP models related? The chapter ends with a discussion of how, using the framework of PDP models, we might forge a mathematical relationship between the principles of mind and brain.

31DTIC ADA225617: On The Control Of Automatic Processes: A Parallel Distributed Processing Account Of The Stroop Effect

By

A growing body of evidence suggests that traditional views of automaticity are in need of revision. For example, automaticity has often been treated as an all-or-none phenomenon, and traditional theories have held that automatic processes are independent of attention. Yet recent empirical data suggest that automatic processes are continuous, and furthermore are subject to attentional control. In this paper we present a model of attention which addresses these issues. Using a parallel distributed processing framework we propose that the attributes of automaticity depend upon the strength of a processing pathway and that strength increases with training. Using the Stroop effect as an example, we show how automatic processes are continuous and emerge gradually with practice. Specifically, we present a computational model of the Stroop task which simulates the time course of processing as well as the effects of learning. This was accomplished by combining the cascade mechanism described by McClelland (1979) with the back propagation learning algorithm (Rumelhart, Hinton, & Williams, 1986). The model is able to simulate performance in the standard Stroop task, as well as aspects of performance in variants of this task which manipulate SOA, response set, and degree of practice. In the discussion we contrast our model with other models, and indicate how it relates to many of the central issues in the literature on attention, automaticity, and interference. (Author) (kr)

32DTIC ADA465545: Parallel Algorithms For Adaptive Matched-Field Processing In Distributed Array Systems

By

Matched-field processing (MFP) localizes sources more accurately than plane-wave beamforming by employing full-wave acoustic propagation models for the cluttered ocean environment. The minimum variance distortionless response MFP (MVDR-MFP) algorithm incorporates the MVDR technique into the MFP algorithm to enhance beamforming performance. Such an adaptive MFP algorithm involves intensive computational and memory requirements due to its complex acoustic model and environmental adaptation. The real-time implementation of adaptive MFP algorithms for large surveillance areas presents a serious computational challenge where high-performance embedded computing and parallel processing may be required to meet real-time constraints. In this paper, three parallel algorithms based on domain decomposition techniques are presented for the MVDR-MFP algorithm on distributed array systems. The parallel performance factors in terms of execution times, communication times, parallel efficiencies, and memory capacities are examined on three potential distributed systems including two types of digital signal processor arrays and a cluster of personal computers. The performance results demonstrate that these parallel algorithms provide a feasible solution for real-time, scalable, and cost-effective adaptive beamforming on embedded, distributed array systems.

35DTIC ADA262087: Workform Processing: A New Paradigm For Fault-Tolerant Distributed Parallel Computation

By

This project explored the workform model of parallel processing, looking at its implications for parallel architectures, operating systems and parallel application structuring. The architecture investigation lead to the design and construction of a scalable shared memory multiprocessor, ParaDiGM, that included as novel features: large cache lines, software-controlled caches, locking and messaging support in the caches and hierarchically shared caches. Various detailed studies coming from this work has shown that these features provide major improvements in cost-effective scalability for parallel computation, particularly parallel simulations. The work on parallel operating system support lead to two major innovations, application-controlled page caches and memory-based messaging. The former allows an application to completely control the allocation of physical memory allocated to it, avoiding unexpected page faults. The latter provides application-level access to the hardware- supported memory-based messaging as well as providing an extended abstraction of this facility.

By

The demand for very high speed data processing coupled with falling hardware costs has made large-scale parallel and distributed computer systems both desirable and feasible. Two modes of parallel processing are single instruction stream-multiple data stream (SIMD) and multiple instruction stream - multiple data stream (MIMD). PASM, a partitionable SIMD/MIMD system, is a reconfigurable multimicroprocessor system being designed for image processing and pattern recognition. An important component of these systems is the interconnection network, the mechanism for communication among the computation nodes and memories. Assuring high reliability for such complex systems is a significant task. Thus, a crucial practical aspect of an interconnection network is fault tolerance. In answer to this need, the Extra Stage Cube (ESC), a fault-tolerant, multistage cube-type interconnection network, is defined. The fault tolerance of the ESC is explored for both single and multiple faults, routing tags are defined, and consideration is given to permuting data and partitioning the ESC in the presence of faults. The ESC is compared with other fault-tolerant multistage networks. Finally, reliability of the ESC and an enhanced version of it are investigated. Keywords: Theses.

The supervised relaxation operator combines the information from multiple ancillary data sources with the information from multispectral remote sensing image data and spatial context. Iterative calculation integrate information from the various sources, reaching a balance in consistency between these sources of information. The supervised relaxation operator is shown to produce substantial improvements in classification accuracy compared to the accuracy produced by the conventional maximum likelihood classifier using spectral data only. The convergence property of the supervised relaxation algorithm is also described. Improvement in classification accuracy by means of supervised relaxation comes at a high price in terms of computation. In order to overcome the computation-intensive problem, a distributed/parallel implementation is adopted to take advantage of a high degree of inherent parallelism in the algorithm.

By

Two methods are used to speed up the execution of a computational task. One is new technology development and the other is the exploitation of parallelism in the computation. To take an advantage of the parallelism in a task requires the utilization of parallel computer architectures. At a certain high level of abstraction a parallel computer system is represented as a graph where the nodes represent processors, memories, or other devices, and the edges represent the communication links. In this thesis the following problems of parallel processing are studied. First is a theoretical study of topological properties of interconnection networks. Second is a case study of a network design for a real-time system. Lastly, the use of SIMD(Single Instruction Stream Multiple Data Stream) networks for performing 'shuffles'. A general model that can be used to describe networks and systems with arbitrary topologies is developed. Based upon the of morphism of groups, the concept of morphism of systems is developed. The morphism of systems is called quasimorphism and allows a method of comparison between topologically arbitrary parallel computer systems. The quasimorphism is used to study the emulation of one system by another.

43DTIC ADA466282: Fault-Tolerant Parallel Algorithms For Adaptive Matched-Field Processing On Distributed Array Systems

By

Continuous innovations in adaptive matched-field processing (MFP) algorithms have presented significant increases in computational complexity and resource requirements that make development and use of advanced parallel processing techniques imperative. In real-time sonar systems operating in severe underwater environments, there is a high likelihood of some part of systems exhibiting defective behavior, resulting in loss of critical network, processor, and sensor elements, and degradation in beam power pattern. Such real-time sonar systems require high reliability to overcome these challenging problems. In this paper, efficient fault-tolerant parallel algorithms based on coarse-grained domain decomposition methods are developed in order to meet real-time and reliability requirements on distributed array systems in the presence of processor and sensor element failures. The performance of the fault-tolerant parallel algorithms is experimentally analyzed in terms of beamforming performance, computation time, speedup, and parallel efficiency on a distributed testbed. The performance results demonstrate that these fault-tolerant parallel algorithms can provide real-time, scalable, lightweight, and fault-tolerant implementations for adaptive MFP algorithms on distributed array systems.

45DTIC ADA219276: A Parallel Distributed Processing Approach To Behavior And Biology In Schizophrenia

By

Schizophrenia is marked by a variety of cognitive and biological abnormalities. In the first part of this paper we describe schizophrenic cognitive deficits in three experimental tasks which tap attention and language processing abilities. We also review biological disturbances that have been reported involving the frontal lobes and the mesocortical dopamine system. In the second part of the paper we present three computer models, each of which simulates normal performance in one of the cognitive tasks described initially. These models were developed within the connectionist (or parallel distributed processing) framework. At the behavioral level, the models suggest that a disturbance in the processing of context can account for schizophrenic patterns of performance in both the attention and language-related tasks. At the same time, the models incorporate features of biological computation that address the biological processes underlying cognitive deficits. All three models incorporate a mechanism for processing context that can be identified with frontal lobe function, and a parameter that corresponds to the effects of dopamine on frontal cortex. A disturbance in this parameter is sufficient to account for schizophrenic patterns of performance in all three of the cognitive tasks simulated. Thus, the models offer an explanatory mechanism linking performance deficits to a disturbance in the processing of context which, in turn, is attributed to a reduction of dopaminergic activity in prefrontal cortex. In the General Discussion, we consider the implications of these models for our understanding of both normal and schizophrenic cognition. We conclude with a discussion of some of the general issues surrounding the modelling endeavor itself.

46DTIC ADA467654: A Distributed Parallel Processing System For Command And Control Imagery

By

Many modern command and control applications are driven by imagery, and imagery, in general, may originate from diverse geographically distributed sources. A rapid increase in image sizes and processing capabilities has resulted from improved hardware for collection and display. Moreover, techniques for parallel processing are keeping pace with military requirements by harnessing powerful parallel processors to facilitate the analysis of images. In addition, tools for distributed processing are under development that can be used to coordinate the processing effort across a network of parallel processing systems. This paper describes a system that can be used to request image analysis over distributed parallel processing facilities, and integrate the results into command and control systems.

By

This paper provides a brief overview of the connectionist or parallel distributed processing framework for modeling cognitive processes, and considers the application of the connectionist framework to problems of cognitive development. Several aspects of cognitive development might result from the process of learning as it occurs in multi-layer networks. This learning process has the characteristic that it reduces the discrepancy between expected and observed events. As it does this, representations develop on hidden units which dramatically change both the way in which the network represents the environment from which it learns and the expectations that the network generates about environmental events. The learning process exhibits relatively abrupt transitions corresponding to stage shifts in cognitive development. These points are illustrated using a network that learns to anticipate which side of a balance beam will go down, based on the number of weights on each side of the fulcrum and their distance from the fulcrum on each side of the beam. The network is trained in an environment in which weight more frequently governs which side will go down. It recapitulates the states of development seen in children, as well as the stage transitions, as it learns to represent weight and distance information. Keywords: Parallel processing; Data processing.

48DTIC ADA218914: On The Control Of Automatic Processes: A Parallel Distributed Processing Model Of The Stroop Effect

By

A growing body of evidence suggests that traditional views of automaticity are in need of revision. For example, automaticity has often been treated as an all-or-none phenomenon, and traditional theories have held that automatic processes are independent of attention. Yet recent empirial data suggests that automatic processes are continuous, and furthermore are subject to attentional control. In this paper we present a model of attention which addresses these issues. Using a parallel distributed processing framework we propose that the attributes of automaticity depend upon the strength of a process and that strength increases with training. Using the Stroop effect as an example, we show how automatic processes are continuous and emerge gradually with practice. Specifically, we present a computational model of the Stroop task which simulates the time course of processing as well as the effects of learning.

1Wood Beyond the World

By

Book's cover

<i>The Wood beyond the World</i> is a fantasy novel by William Morris, perhaps the first modern fantasy writer to unite an imaginary world with the element of the supernatural, and thus the precursor of much of present-day fantasy literature. His use of archaic language has been seen by some modern readers as making his fiction difficult to read, but brings a wonderful atmosphere to the telling.<br /><br />Morris considered his fantasies a revival of the medieval tradition of chivalrous romances. In consequence, they tend to have sprawling plots of strung-together adventures. In this story, Walter leaves his father and his own unfaithful wife and sets sail in search of adventure. This he finds aplenty, encountering love, treachery and magic in the Wood of the title and in travelling through the Mountains of the Folk of the Bears. But can he find happiness and peace by means of his Quest?<br /><br />Read by Cori Samuel. Edited by <a href="http://www.wisemandarine.com/">Mandarine</a>. Book's cover

The Well at the World's End is thought to be one of the first examples of an entirely fictional fantasy world, and has greatly influenced later fantasy writers such as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. The book follows the travels of Ralph, a prince of a tiny country, as he disobeys his fathers wishes and runs away from home to adventure in the world, and seek out the fabled Well at World's End, said to grant eternal youth to those who drink from it. 10Echoes of Love’s House

LibriVox volunteers bring you 11 recordings of Echoes of Love’s House by William Morris. This was the Weekly Poetry project for January 9th, 2011.<br><br>William Morris was an English textile designer, artist, writer, and socialist associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the English Arts and Crafts Movement. Morris wrote and published poetry, fiction, and translations of ancient and medieval texts throughout his life.<br><br>Today, Morris's poetry is little-read. His fantasy romances languished out of print for decades until their rediscovery amid the great fantasy revival of the late 1960s following the phenomenal success of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. But his textile and wallpaper designs remain a staple of the Arts and Crafts Revival of the turn of the 21st century, and the reproduction of Morris designs as fabric, wrapping paper, and craft kits of all sorts is testament to the enduring appeal of his work. The William Morris Societies in Britain, the US, and Canada are active in preserving Morris's work and ideas.

12House of the Wolfings

By

Book's cover

William Morris was a writer, illustrator and medievalist from the Romantic period and associated with other renowned authors of the time such as Dante Rossetti. His fascination with ancient Germanic and Norse people dominated his writings, the first to be set in an entirely invented fantasy world and which helped to establish the fantasy genre.<br><br> The House of Wolfings (1890), some argue, is a demonstration of Morris' socialism as the society described, though not an utopia, is clan-based, elects leaders and makes decisions in clan tribal meetings. Notwithstanding, it tells the story of how Thiodolf and his clan - the Wolfings - fight and vanquish the Roman invaders. The book is built with Morris' knowledge of the historical period and his own idealistic views, which allow him to combine facts and mythical elements. Thiodolf is protected by a dwarfish coat of mail, given to him by his lover Wood Sun, herself one of the Vala, the immortals. But things are not what they seem and what is meant to protect him, is also a curse... (Summary by Sailormoon)

14News From Nowhere

By

Book's cover

News from Nowhere (1890) is a classic work combining utopian socialism and soft science fiction written by the artist, designer and socialist pioneer William Morris. In the book, the narrator, William Guest, falls asleep after returning from a meeting of the Socialist League and awakes to find himself in a future society based on common ownership and democratic control of the means of production. In this society there is no private property, no big cities, no authority, no monetary system, no divorce, no courts, no prisons, and no class systems. This agrarian society functions simply because the people find pleasure in nature, and therefore they find pleasure in their work. In the novel, Morris tackles one of the most common criticisms of socialism; the supposed lack of incentive to work in a communistic society. Morris' response is that all work should be creative and pleasurable. (Summary by Wikipedia)

17Old Rail Fence Corners

By

Book's cover

Old Rail Fence Corners is an historical treasure trove containing the stories of the first significant waves of European-American settlers in the now state of Minnesota (United States of America). This book has direct accounts of mid-19th century lives and experiences on the frontier, recounted by the frontiersmen and women when many of them were in their mid-90s. A group of volunteer women -- the Book Committee -- sought to record these recollections before they were lost with the passing of these remarkable adventurers. Experience a wild, dangerous Minnesota full of mosquitoes, threatening wildlife, difficult roads, dirt floors, food scarcity, and Native American neighbors. Interactions with Native Americans are a major theme throughout the book; settlers relate their experiences in the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War, their outsider accounts of interactions between Minnesota's Native American tribes, and the settlers' impressions of the Native American inhabitants with whom they share the land, which range from outright fear to acceptance to friendship and respect. Listen to the amazing stories of the Minnesota settlers as they come back to life through the voices of our talented readers! These are the stories of Minnesota's adventurous, resourceful, and brave pioneers that you won't soon forget. - Summary by Jill Engle

23Song of the Sewing-Machine

By

Book's cover

George Pope Morris was an American editor, poet, and songwriter. Critic and writer Edgar Allan Poe acknowledged the popularity of Morris's songs, "which have taken fast hold upon the popular taste, and which are deservedly celebrated". In April 1840, Poe wrote that Morris was "very decidedly, our best writer of songs—and, in saying this, I mean to assign him a high rank as poet". Willis wrote of Morris: "He is just what poets would be if they sang like birds without criticism... nothing can stop a song of his". (Wikipedia)

24Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems

By

Book's cover

This is a volume of early narrative poems by William Morris, first published in 1858. While at the time of writing the most important stages of William Morris' career are still ahead of him, his ideas are already reflected in many of the poems. Many of the poems share an exceedingly sombre tone, and were appreciated by the public only years after they were first published. - Summary by Carolin

25Story of the Glittering Plain

By

In this early example of the modern high fantasy genre, Hallblithe, a warrior of the House of Raven, sets out in pursuit of the pirates who have kidnapped his troth-plight maiden, the Hostage. Kidnapped himself, Hallblithe sails to the Isle of Ransom in the company of the giant Puny Fox. Travelling onward to the Land of the Glittering Plain, he spurns the offer of eternal youth and the hand of the King's daughter to continue the search for his beloved. First published in 1890 in the English Illustrated Magazine, The Story of the Glittering Plain was re-published in 1973 as the first volume of the celebrated Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy Library. This recording is read from the gloriously printed 1891 Kelmscott Press edition, with illustrations by Walter Crane. (Phil Benson) - Summary by Phil Benson

28Prose Romances from the Oxford and Cambridge Magazine (1856)

By

William Morris initiated the genre of high fantasy in a number of short novels written toward the end of his life. But he had already experimented with the genre much earlier in stories written for the Oxford and Cambridge Magazine, which he launched as a student at Oxford University in 1856. Published posthumously in book form, and reprinted as the eighth volume of the celebrated Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy Library under the title Golden Wings and other Stories, these short stories make an entertaining collection that stands up well against Morris's mature work. - Summary by Phil Benson

31Catharine de Bora; or, Social and Domestic Scenes in the Life of Luther

By

Book's cover

"There are many interesting and characteristic incidents in the domestic life of Luther which are not found in biographies of the great Reformer. The character of his wife has not been portrayed in full, and who does not wish to become better acquainted with a woman who mingled many a drop of balsam in those numerous cups of sorrow which her celebrated husband was compelled to drink? This little book is the result of extensive research, and exhibits facts attested by the most reliable authorities, many of which will be new to those of my readers who have not investigated this particular subject." from the Preface by John G. Morris, a noted Lutheran scholar from Baltimore, Maryland. These chapters start with a discussion of celibacy and marriage in the church, describe Lutheran's marriage to and life with Catharine de Bora, and her life after the reformers death, and accounts of their children. - Summary by Larry Wilson

33Roots of the Mountains

By

The Roots of the Mountains was the second in a projected series of three historical novels set in a pre-medieval Germanic world (the third was not completed). It follows the themes of House of the Wolfings, which was published in the same year, into a later generation. A loose alliance of Dalesmen, Woodlanders and Shepherds who have lived in peace around the valley of Burgdale for so long that they barely remember war, find their peace disturbed by the Sons of the Wolf and the invading Dusky Men. Morris’s exploration of the social and economic organization of this fictional pre-medieval world reflects his socialism; the figure of the Dusky Men (unable to breed with the Germanic tribes and slaughtered without compassion) reflects the racial politics of his times. Long neglected, Morris’s two Germanic novels were rediscovered when they were published as the sixteenth and nineteenth volumes in the celebrated Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy Library. - Summary by Phil Benson

By

Book's cover

In this short (58 page) work, Morris and Woodress present a selection of fascinating source materials to survey key events which occurred during the presidencies of Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and John Quincy Adams. As the authors state in their preface, "The early part of the last century was an exciting time to live in America. The signers of the Declaration of Independence and the framers of the Constitution, mostly old men by now, saw that their experiment in republican government had turned out to be a success. The nation was flourishing in these years like a healthy adolescent. There were growing pains, to be sure, but no one doubted now that the youngster would reach manhood. The question was: What is he going to be like?" - Summary by Ciufi Galeazzi

38Early Hanoverians

By

In this short book Edward Ellis Morris writes a vivid account of the reigns of the first two Georges. Scarcely had the fifty-four-year-old king assumed the throne when James Stuart roused the Highlanders in the "Fifteen." Five years later the collapse of the South Sea Company convulsed Britain and her first prime minister, Robert Walpole, emerged to stabilize the country's finances. George II succeeded his father in 1727 and Morris writes that "the new King was in person short, and like many short men, proud and touchy." Fortunately, he was guided by the wise Queen Caroline. On the Continent, the Turks besieged Vienna, Britain got embroiled first in the War of Jenkins' Ear and then in the War of the Austrian Succession, while Bonnie Prince Charlie took advantage of these distractions to mount the nearly successful Jacobite invasion of the "Forty-five." Meanwhile, John Wesley's Methodism revived religious enthusiasm, Boswell immortalized Samuel Johnson and his friends, and Tom Jones embarked on an epic road trip in which Henry Fielding brought English society to life, warts and all. - Summary by Pamela Nagami, M.D.

40Age of Anne

By

This short survey of the age of Queen Anne begins with the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) and the career of the Duke of Marlborough, leader of the allied armies against Louis XIV. Scotland joins England to form the United Kingdom. Peter the Great wrests control of the Gulf of Finland from Charles XII of Sweden and builds St. Petersburg. Despite the Jacobite threat, the Whigs secure the Protestant Succession and George I ascends the throne. Pope writes a mock epic in couplets, Addison's "Spectator" enlivens coffee houses and tea tables, and Defoe creates the immortal "Robinson Crusoe." (Pamela Nagami, M.D.)

45Summer Dawn

By

LibriVox volunteers bring you 16 recordings of "Summer Dawn" by William Morris.<br> This was the Weekly Poetry project for July 10, 2022. <br> ------<br> When this poem was first published in 1856 it had no title. Subsequently, the 1858 edition gave the sonnet its title of "Summer Dawn." And it is a sonnet, though it does not follow traditional English or Italian models. Perhaps Morris was giving hint of the Provençal 'alba.' These poems in their early form were conversations between two lovers. The requirement is that each stanza end with the word 'alba' [dawn]. Morris ends lines five and eleven this way. - Summary by KevinS

The Tale of King Coustans the Emperor tells the ahistorical and unlikely story of how an abandoned child named Coustans becomes the Byzantine Emperor. The Friendship of Amis and Amile tells of the lifelong friendship and adventures of the look-alike duo of Amis and Amile. The Tale of King Florus and the Fair Jehane recounts two parallel stories. 50Dream of John Ball

      By

      Book's cover

A Dream of John Ball recounts a dream of being transported back in time to 1381 during the Peasants' Revolt as John Ball and an army of peasants prepare to march on London. Morris gives us a beautiful depiction of England during a period of the Middle Ages where common people began to realize their worth and imagine a better future than being chattel of the ruling class. The main character finds himself at a spirited rally of peasants featuring a speech from John Ball himself, followed by a battle for their township where the English longbow and clothyard shaft win the day. The story concludes with an intimate discussion between the main character and John Ball that contrasts the social hierarchies of medieval England and William Morris's own Victorian era, which feels remarkably close to the present. A Dream of John Ball is Morris illuminating the virtues of the Middle Ages to aspire to a better future for ourselves. - Summary by Taylor Whitehead
