8A Comparison Of NOOP To Structural Domain-Theoretic Models Of Object-Oriented Programming

By

Mainstream object-oriented programming languages such as Java, C#, C++ and Scala are all almost entirely nominally-typed. NOOP is a recently developed domain-theoretic model of OOP that was designed to include full nominal information found in nominally-typed OOP. This paper compares NOOP to the most widely known domain-theoretic models of OOP, namely, the models developed by Cardelli and Cook, which were structurally-typed models. Leveraging the development of NOOP, the comparison presented in this paper provides a clear and precise mathematical account for the relation between nominal and structural OO type systems.

15ERIC ED396680: Object-Oriented Programming In High Schools The Turing Way.

By

This paper proposes an approach to introducing object-oriented concepts to high school computer science students using the Object-Oriented Turing (OOT) language. Students can learn about basic object-oriented (OO) principles such as classes and inheritance by using and expanding a collection of classes that draw pictures like circles and happy faces. Materials are outlined for a two-week teaching unit which support this approach. The units cover: (1) three foundational OO concepts: objects, classes and inheritance; (2) diagrams and relations; (3) software development environments; (4) the OOT language and environment; (5) OOT in an undergraduate curriculum; and (6) OOT at the high school level. (Contains 17 references.) (Author/BEW)

20DTIC ADA284924: Design Of A Parallel Object Oriented Programming Language

By

Object-oriented programming techniques have become a vital part of modern software engineering. Most large new commercial software products are designed today using objects oriented principles along with supporting development environments and tools. Such methodology is particularly appealing for parallel computing, where there is great need for approaches capable of simplifying the programming task and producing high quality software more quickly. In this project we have carried out research that will lead to a new parallel object-oriented language based on C++. The new language, C++-Linda, is a novel combination of the most widely used object-oriented language and a successful environment for parallel computing that supports a virtual shared memory model for process interaction. This combination is an especially appropriate one because Linda's memory model is naturally object-oriented, enabling a seamless design that is completely consistent with object-oriented methodology. In this Phase I project, we have carried out research to understand the basic issues underlying parallel object-oriented languages, and we have created a preliminary design for C++-Linda. In a future Phase II project, we plan to develop a prototype implementation that will serve as a guide for eventual commercialization. Parallel computing, Programming languages, Object-oriented languages, Linda, C++-Linda, (C++).

Seventeen scholarly papers and twelve abstracts comprise the content of the twentieth annual Brick & Click Libraries Conference, held annually at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. The twentieth Brick & Click Libraries Conference was held virtually. The proceedings, authored by academic librarians and presented at the conference, portray the contemporary and future face of librarianship. The 2020 paper and abstract titles include: (1) From the Wild West to Teamwork: Faculty Driven Acquisitions (Randyn Heisserer-Miller, Stephanie Hallam, and Brad Reel); (2) Student Engagement: Exploring Primary Sources in the Library of Congress in an Online Course (Peggy Ridlen); (3) Object Oriented vs Functional Programming - Library Instruction in a Bite-Sized Functional Model (Billy Moore); (4) When People Count: Leveraging Internal Resources to Develop a Program for Tracking Building Usage (Terra Feick); (5) Interactive Introductions for International Students: Reworking How We Teach Information Literacy Skills (Kelly Hovinga); (6) Fostering Success for New Faculty Librarians (Karen Bleier); (7) We Did It, You Can Do It, Too: In-House Digital Preservation (Samantha Henning); (8) Stacking it Up: A Textbooks on Reserve Program (Katharine Baldwin and Jenise Overmier); (9) Teaching into the Gray Areas: Designing Learning Activities That Encourage Higher Order Thinking and Research Skills (Virginia L. 48Object-Oriented Programming With Flavors

By

A paper on Symbolics Flavors by David A. Moon. "This paper describes Symbolics' newly redesigned object-oriented programming system, Flavors. Flavors encourages program modularity, eases the development of large, complex programs, and provides high efficiency at run time. Flavors is integrated into Lisp and the Symbolics program development environment. This paper describes the philosophy and some of the major characteristics of Symbolics' Flavors and shows how the above goals are addressed. Full details of Flavors are left to the programmers' manual, Reference Guide to Symbolics Common Lisp."

50Channels As Objects In Concurrent Object-Oriented Programming

By

There is often a sort of a protocol associated to each class, stating when and how certain methods should be called. Given that this protocol is, if at all, described in the documentation accompanying the class, current mainstream object-oriented languages cannot provide for the verification of client code adherence against the sought class behaviour. We have defined a class-based concurrent object-oriented language that formalises such protocols in the form of usage types. Usage types are attached to class definitions, allowing for the specification of (1) the available methods, (2) the tests clients must perform on the result of methods, and (3) the object status - linear or shared - all of which depend on the object's state. Our work extends the recent approach on modular session types by eliminating channel operations, and defining the method call as the single communication primitive in both sequential and concurrent settings. In contrast to previous works, we define a single category for objects, instead of distinct categories for linear and for shared objects, and let linear objects evolve into shared ones. We introduce a standard sync qualifier to prevent thread interference in certain operations on shared objects. We formalise the language syntax, the operational semantics, and a type system that enforces by static typing that methods are called only when available, and by a single client if so specified in the usage type. We illustrate the language via a complete example.
