9NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19920016874: Methodology For Object-oriented Real-time Systems Analysis And Design: Software Engineering
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Successful application of software engineering methodologies requires an integrated analysis and design life-cycle in which the various phases flow smoothly 'seamlessly' from analysis through design to implementation. Furthermore, different analysis methodologies often lead to different structuring of the system so that the transition from analysis to design may be awkward depending on the design methodology to be used. This is especially important when object-oriented programming is to be used for implementation when the original specification and perhaps high-level design is non-object oriented. Two approaches to real-time systems analysis which can lead to an object-oriented design are contrasted: (1) modeling the system using structured analysis with real-time extensions which emphasizes data and control flows followed by the abstraction of objects where the operations or methods of the objects correspond to processes in the data flow diagrams and then design in terms of these objects; and (2) modeling the system from the beginning as a set of naturally occurring concurrent entities (objects) each having its own time-behavior defined by a set of states and state-transition rules and seamlessly transforming the analysis models into high-level design models. A new concept of a 'real-time systems-analysis object' is introduced and becomes the basic building block of a series of seamlessly-connected models which progress from the object-oriented real-time systems analysis and design system analysis logical models through the physical architectural models and the high-level design stages. The methodology is appropriate to the overall specification including hardware and software modules. In software modules, the systems analysis objects are transformed into software objects.

12DTIC ADA284924: Design Of A Parallel Object Oriented Programming Language
By Defense Technical Information Center
Object-oriented programming techniques have become a vital part of modern software engineering. Most large new commercial software products are designed today using objects oriented principles along with supporting development environments and tools. Such methodology is particularly appealing for parallel computing, where there is great need for approaches capable of simplifying the programming task and producing high quality software more quickly. In this project we have carried out research that will lead to a new parallel object-oriented language based on C++. The new language, C++-Linda, is a novel combination of the most widely used object-oriented language and a successful environment for parallel computing that supports a virtual shared memory model for process interaction. This combination is an especially appropriate one because Linda's memory model is naturally object-oriented, enabling a seamless design that is completely consistent with object-oriented methodology. In this Phase I project, we have carried out research to understand the basic issues underlying parallel object-oriented languages, and we have created a preliminary design for C++-Linda. In a future Phase II project, we plan to develop a prototype implementation that will serve as a guide for eventual commercialization. Parallel computing, Programming languages, Object-oriented languages, Linda, C++-Linda, (C++).

13Structured Versus Object-oriented Design Of A Navy Battle Group Logistics Simulation System.
By Brooks, Bernadette Clemente.
This thesis deals with the design of a Navy battle group logistics simulation system to support battle group logistics coordinators. BGLCSS 2.0, the Battle Group Logistics Coordinator Support System, was designed and developed using a structured programming paradigm. A subset of BGLCSS 2.0 was then designed using an object-oriented programming paradigm. We present the components of each of these designs in C and C++. Our approach was to compare and critique these two designs with respect to the extent to which their respective programming paradigms meet the software goals of software reusability and ease of program extension and maintenance. We designed the graphical user interface using TAE Plus which generated code in both C and C++. This mechanism provides an easy way to transport the interface from a C implementation to a C++ implementation in the future.

15Design Patterns In Object-oriented ABAP
By Barbaric, Igor

18DTIC ADA274119: Object-Oriented Design And Implementation Of A Parallel Ada Simulation System
By Defense Technical Information Center
Simulations which model the behavior 'real world' entities are often large and complex, and require frequent changes to the configuration. This research effort examines the benefits of using object-oriented techniques to develop a distributed simulation environment which supports modularity, modifiability, and portability. The components of the Parallel Discrete Event Simulation (PDES) environment are identified and modeled using the Rumbaugh modeling technique. From the model, a prototype implementation of a Parallel Ada Simulation Environment (PASE) is accomplished using Classic Ada. A system interface for the Intel ipsc/2 Hypercube was developed to illustrate the concepts of modularity and portability. In addition, the prototype environment uses a filter which implements the basic Chandy-Misra time synchronization protocol. Finally, to test the correct operation of the environment, a simple battlefield application model is developed. PASE is tested in the sequential mode on both a Sun Sparc station and the Hypercube. The ability to distribute across n-nodes is demonstrated using various configurations on the Hypercube. The parallel test demonstrates the ability for objects on separate processors to interact with each other by passing messages, and to execute events generated by remote objects in the proper time stamp order.

24NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20080047741: Design Of A Model Execution Framework: Repetitive Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (ROSE)
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The ROSE framework was designed to facilitate complex system analyses. It completely divorces the model execution process from the model itself. By doing so ROSE frees the modeler to develop a library of standard modeling processes such as Design of Experiments, optimizers, parameter studies, and sensitivity studies which can then be applied to any of their available models. The ROSE framework accomplishes this by means of a well defined API and object structure. Both the API and object structure are presented here with enough detail to implement ROSE in any object-oriented language or modeling tool.

25DTIC ADA640071: Using Object-Oriented Typing To Support Architectural Design In The C2 Style
By Defense Technical Information Center
Software architectures enable large-scale software development. Component reuse and substitutability, two key aspects of large-scale development, must be planned for during software design. Object-oriented (OO) type theory supports reuse by structuring inter-component relationships and verifying those relationships through type checking in an architecture definition language (ADL). In this paper, we identify the issues and discuss the ramifications of applying OO type theory to the C2 architectural style. This work stems from a series of experiments that were conducted to investigate component reuse and substitutability in C2. We also discuss the limits of applicability of OO typing to C2 and how we addressed them in the C2 ADL.

27DTIC ADA243788: Design And Application Of An Object Oriented Graphical Database Management System For Synthetic Environments
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is investigating the use of synthetic environments for military applications under the sponsorship of Rome Laboratories (RL). Areas under investigation include mission planning, battle management and flight simulation. The work reported in this thesis focuses on the object-oriented design and implementation of the Graphical Database Management System (GDMS) used to support research in these areas. GDMS provides the data structures, file format and algorithms to manage and render hierarchical, three-dimensional, polygonal models. Flexibility and adaptability were key factors in its design. A secondary objective of this research was to demonstrate the functionality of GDMS through the development of a characteristic application. This led to the design and implementation of a Database Generation System (DBGen) for the construction and manipulation of synthetic environments. DBGen allows a user to orient, scale, move, delete and add multi-resolution objects to synthetic environment interactively. It also provides a real time fly-through capability for immediate feedback on the dynamic response of the database. The development of the Graphical Database Management System was successful. The design and implementation of four major synthetic environment applications based on GDMS tested its flexibility, while the rapid incorporation of a number of special effects algorithms in final stages of the development cycle demonstrated its adaptability. The development of the Database Generation System was also successful. In addition to providing an excellent platform for testing GDMS functionality, it proved to be an effective tool for placing 3-D objects on terrain.

28DTIC ADA202579: A Decision-Based Methodology For Object Oriented-Design
By Defense Technical Information Center
The task of object-oriented development raises a new set of design problems. Specifically: how to scope a problem based on objects rather than functions; how to select the best objects; how to encapsulate data structures with the right set of operations; and when to stop decomposing a system into objects and begin describing the algorithms that implement those objects' behaviors. The difficulty of making these decisions increased when the requirements documentation was not developed with an object-oriented paradigm in mind. Although several software development environments implement an object- oriented design methodology, they seem concerned primarily with programming in the small activities, or with providing capabilities for capturing, representing, and storing design decisions once they are made. Recognizing the importance of supporting design decision making, this study focused on the application of decision support system concepts to formulating a methodology for object-oriented design. This thesis describes an object-oriented design methodology based on the four problems or decisions stated above. An object model structure is also defined to provide a foundation for organizing design information. The object model is described by a set of database relations, and includes a three view graphic representation providing block, detail and control flow graphs.

30NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20150023103: Design Of An Object-Oriented Turbomachinery Analysis Code: Initial Results
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Performance prediction of turbomachines is a significant part of aircraft propulsion design. In the conceptual design stage, there is an important need to quantify compressor and turbine aerodynamic performance and develop initial geometry parameters at the 2-D level prior to more extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses. The Object-oriented Turbomachinery Analysis Code (OTAC) is being developed to perform 2-D meridional flowthrough analysis of turbomachines using an implicit formulation of the governing equations to solve for the conditions at the exit of each blade row. OTAC is designed to perform meanline or streamline calculations; for streamline analyses simple radial equilibrium is used as a governing equation to solve for spanwise property variations. While the goal for OTAC is to allow simulation of physical effects and architectural features unavailable in other existing codes, it must first prove capable of performing calculations for conventional turbomachines.OTAC is being developed using the interpreted language features available in the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) code described by Claus et al (1991). Using the NPSS framework came with several distinct advantages, including access to the pre-existing NPSS thermodynamic property packages and the NPSS Newton-Raphson solver. The remaining objects necessary for OTAC were written in the NPSS framework interpreted language. These new objects form the core of OTAC and are the BladeRow, BladeSegment, TransitionSection, Expander, Reducer, and OTACstart Elements. The BladeRow and BladeSegment consumed the initial bulk of the development effort and required determining the equations applicable to flow through turbomachinery blade rows given specific assumptions about the nature of that flow. Once these objects were completed, OTAC was tested and found to agree with existing solutions from other codes; these tests included various meanline and streamline comparisons of axial compressors and turbines at design and off-design conditions.

31An Object-oriented Approach To Programming Logic And Design
By Farrell, Joyce

32NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19960027013: Design Of Object-oriented Distributed Simulation Classes
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Distributed simulation of aircraft engines as part of a computer aided design package is being developed by NASA Lewis Research Center for the aircraft industry. The project is called NPSS, an acronym for 'Numerical Propulsion Simulation System'. NPSS is a flexible object-oriented simulation of aircraft engines requiring high computing speed. It is desirable to run the simulation on a distributed computer system with multiple processors executing portions of the simulation in parallel. The purpose of this research was to investigate object-oriented structures such that individual objects could be distributed. The set of classes used in the simulation must be designed to facilitate parallel computation. Since the portions of the simulation carried out in parallel are not independent of one another, there is the need for communication among the parallel executing processors which in turn implies need for their synchronization. Communication and synchronization can lead to decreased throughput as parallel processors wait for data or synchronization signals from other processors. As a result of this research, the following have been accomplished. The design and implementation of a set of simulation classes which result in a distributed simulation control program have been completed. The design is based upon MIT 'Actor' model of a concurrent object and uses 'connectors' to structure dynamic connections between simulation components. Connectors may be dynamically created according to the distribution of objects among machines at execution time without any programming changes. Measurements of the basic performance have been carried out with the result that communication overhead of the distributed design is swamped by the computation time of modules unless modules have very short execution times per iteration or time step. An analytical performance model based upon queuing network theory has been designed and implemented. Its application to realistic configurations has not been carried out.

43DTIC ADA346477: An Object-Oriented Toolbox For Distributed Parameter Control Design With Application To JSF
By Defense Technical Information Center
We have developed the core functionality for an object-oriented toolbox for modeling, control design and analysis of distributed parameter systems. The toolbox is based on PDESolve, our C++ class library for simulating partial differential equation (PDE) systems. The capabilities developed are: (1) High-level specification and analysis of the PDE control problem; (2) Calculation of basic system matrices using a finite-element approximation of PDE control problems; (3) Interface with MATLAB providing access to MATLAB functionality from within the control toolbox; (4) Simulation of open and closed-loop response; and (5) Model reduction at the PDE level using a modal basis. We have successfully demonstrated the toolbox on the LQR control of plate vibration using a distributed actuator. This problem takes about 0.5 man-days to solve using the toolbox whereas it is estimated that it will take at least a man-month to solve it by modifying a conventional finite-element code.
