1NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20160001182: Predictive Lateral Logic For Numerical Entry Guidance Algorithms Predictive Lateral Logic For Numerical Entry Guidance Algorithms
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Recent entry guidance algorithm development123 has tended to focus on numerical integration of trajectories onboard in order to evaluate candidate bank profiles. Such methods enjoy benefits such as flexibility to varying mission profiles and improved robustness to large dispersions. A common element across many of these modern entry guidance algorithms is a reliance upon the concept of Apollo heritage lateral error (or azimuth error) deadbands in which the number of bank reversals to be performed is non-deterministic. This paper presents a closed-loop bank reversal method that operates with a fixed number of bank reversals defined prior to flight. However, this number of bank reversals can be modified at any point, including in flight, based on contingencies such as fuel leaks where propellant usage must be minimized.

2Asynchronous Parallel Algorithms For Nonconvex Big-Data Optimization. Part II: Complexity And Numerical Results
By Loris Cannelli, Francisco Facchinei, Vyacheslav Kungurtsev and Gesualdo Scutari
We present complexity and numerical results for a new asynchronous parallel algorithmic method for the minimization of the sum of a smooth nonconvex function and a convex nonsmooth regularizer, subject to both convex and nonconvex constraints. The proposed method hinges on successive convex approximation techniques and a novel probabilistic model that captures key elements of modern computational architectures and asynchronous implementations in a more faithful way than state-of-the-art models. In the companion paper we provided a detailed description on the probabilistic model and gave convergence results for a diminishing stepsize version of our method. Here, we provide theoretical complexity results for a fixed stepsize version of the method and report extensive numerical comparisons on both convex and nonconvex problems demonstrating the efficiency of our approach.

3Stochastic Filtering Via L2 Projection On Mixture Manifolds With Computer Algorithms And Numerical Examples
By John Armstrong and Damiano Brigo
We examine some differential geometric approaches to finding approximate solutions to the continuous time nonlinear filtering problem. Our primary focus is a projection method using the direct L2 metric onto a family of normal mixtures. We compare this method to earlier projection methods based on the Hellinger distance/Fisher metric and exponential families, and we compare the L2 mixture projection filter with a particle method with the same number of parameters. We study particular systems that may illustrate the advantages of this filter over other algorithms when comparing outputs with the optimal filter. We finally consider a specific software design that is suited for a numerically efficient implementation of this filter and provide numerical examples.

6Numerical Algorithms For The Forward And Backward Fractional Feynman-Kac Equations
By Weihua Deng, Minghua Chen and Eli Barkai
The Feynman-Kac equations are a type of partial differential equations describing the distribution of functionals of diffusive motion. The probability density function (PDF) of Brownian functionals satisfies the Feynman-Kac formula, being a Schr\"{o}dinger equation in imaginary time. The functionals of no-Brownian motion, or anomalous diffusion, follow the fractional Feynman-Kac equation [J. Stat. Phys. 141, 1071-1092, 2010], where the fractional substantial derivative is involved. Based on recently developed discretized schemes for fractional substantial derivatives [arXiv:1310.3086], this paper focuses on providing algorithms for numerically solving the forward and backward fractional Feynman-Kac equations; since the fractional substantial derivative is non-local time-space coupled operator, new challenges are introduced comparing with the general fractional derivative. Two ways (finite difference and finite element) of discretizing the space derivative are considered. For the backward fractional Feynman-Kac equation, the numerical stability and convergence of the algorithms with first order accuracy are theoretically discussed; and the optimal estimates are obtained. For all the provided schemes, including the first order and high order ones, of both forward and backward Feynman-Kac equations, extensive numerical experiments are performed to show their effectiveness.

7Constant And Power-of-2 Segmentation Algorithms For A High Speed Numerical Function Generator
By Valenzuela, Zaldy M.
The realization of high-speed numeric computation is a sought-after commodity for real world applications, including high-speed scientific computation, digital signal processing, and embedded computers. An example of this is the generation of elementary functions, such as sin( ) x , x e and log( ) x . Sasao, Butler and Reidel [Ref. 1] developed a high speed numeric function generator using a look-up table (LUT) cascade. Their method used a piecewise linear segmentation algorithm to generate the functions [Ref. 1]. In this thesis, two alternative segmentation algorithms are proposed and compared to the results of Sasao, Butler and Reidel [Ref.1]. The first algorithm is the Constant Approximation. This algorithm uses lines of slope zero to approximate a curve. The second algorithm is the power-of-2-approximation. This method uses 2i x to approximate a curve. The constant approximation eliminates the need for a multiplier and adder, while the power-of-2-approximations eliminates the need for multiplier, thus improving the computation speed. Tradeoffs between the three methods are examined. Specifically, the implementation of the piecewise linear algorithm requires the most amount of hardware and is slower than the other two. The advantage that it has is that it yields the least amount of segments to generate a function. The constant approximation requires the most amount of hardware to realize a function, but is the fastest implementation. The power-of-2 approximation is an intermediate choice that balances speed and hardware requirements.

11DTIC ADA093617: A Numerical Investigation Of Ellipsoid Algorithms For Large-Scale Linear Programming.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The ellipsoid algorithm associated with Shor, Khachiyan and others has certain theoretical properties that suggest its use as a linear programming algorithm. Some of the practical difficulties are investigated here. A variant of the ellipsoid update is first developed, to take advantage of the range constraints that often occur in linear programs (i.e., constraints of the form l or = aTx or = u, where u - l is reasonably small). Methods for storing the ellipsoid matrix are then discussed for both dense and sparse problems. In the large-scale case, a major difficulty is that the desired ellipsoid cannot be represented compactly throughout an arbitrary number of iterations. Some schemes are suggested for economizing on storage, but any guarantee of convergence is effectively lost. At this stage there remains little room for optimism that an ellipsoid-based algorithm could complete with the simplex method on problems with a large number of variables. (Author)

12DTIC ADA099562: Research On Numerical Algorithms For The Three-Dimensional Navier-Stokes Equations. II. Dissipative Finite Element.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The objective of this research project is to derive and evaluate versatile, accurate and efficient numerical algorithms for solution of aerodynamic flowfields at large Reynolds number. The concept of a dissipative finite element algorithm has been refined and extended to solution of a complete equation set in aerodynamics. The resultant numerical results are highly encouraging with respect to shock resolution and overall performance, utilizing both a linear quadratic finite element embodiment of the theory. The theoretical formulational statement of the algorithm has been extended to a multi-dimensional description in generalized coordinates. The key efficiency feature is identification of the tensor matrix resolution of the Jacobian of the Newton algorithm for this statement. The concept of application of the continuity equation solution, as a differential constraint on the momentum equation algorithm, has been validated. The formulation is directly useful for viscous marching procedures, and with some modifications could be equally useful for a low Mach number Navier - Stokes solution algorithm. (Author)

13DTIC ADA367711: Penetrator Case Fracture Predictive Technology: Volume 2-Numerical Algorithms And Computations
By Defense Technical Information Center
The objective of this work was to develop the capability to perform 3D crack propagation computations for penetrator cases during impact and penetration into hard concrete targets. The first step was to develop a new 2D algorithm that did not require rezoning (as rezoning would be very complex in 3D geometry), the second step was to extend the new technique to 3D geometry, and the third step was to apply the 3D algorithm to actual hard target penetrator impact events. The numerical algorithms described in this report have been incorporated into the 1999 version of the EPIC code. A finite element algorithm is presented for dynamic crack calculations in general directions. The algorithm avoids node splitting and the associated remeshing and redefinition of contact surfaces. and does not rely on failure mechanisms embedded in the constitutive model. The T* energy integral is employed as the dynamic fracture parameter, guiding the crack tip through the mesh. Elements through which the crack tip passes lose the ability to sustain deviatoric and tensile volumetric Stresses, and their interfaces with the nest of the mesh model fractured surfaces that can sustain only compressive normal tractions (when the crack is closed). This technique is therefore referred to as the element failure algorithm.

15Radiation-hydrodynamical Simulations Of Massive Star Formation Using Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer: I. Algorithms And Numerical Methods
By Tim J. Harries
We present a set of new numerical methods that are relevant to calculating radiation pressure terms in hydrodynamics calculations, with a particular focus on massive star formation. The radiation force is determined from a Monte Carlo estimator and enables a complete treatment of the detailed microphysics, including polychromatic radiation and anisotropic scattering, in both the free-streaming and optically-thick limits. Since the new method is computationally demanding we have developed two new methods that speed up the algorithm. The first is a photon packet splitting algorithm that enables efficient treatment of the Monte Carlo process in very optically thick regions. The second is a parallelisation method that distributes the Monte Carlo workload over many instances of the hydrodynamic domain, resulting in excellent scaling of the radiation step. We also describe the implementation of a sink particle method that enables us to follow the accretion onto, and the growth of, the protostars. We detail the results of extensive testing and benchmarking of the new algorithms.

16The Emergence Of Gravitational Wave Science: 100 Years Of Development Of Mathematical Theory, Detectors, Numerical Algorithms, And Data Analysis Tools
By Michael Holst, Olivier Sarbach, Manuel Tiglio and Michele Vallisneri
On September 14, 2015, the newly upgraded Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) recorded a loud gravitational-wave (GW) signal, emitted a billion light-years away by a coalescing binary of two stellar-mass black holes. The detection was announced in February 2016, in time for the hundredth anniversary of Einstein's prediction of GWs within the theory of general relativity (GR). The signal represents the first direct detection of GWs, the first observation of a black-hole binary, and the first test of GR in its strong-field, high-velocity, nonlinear regime. In the remainder of its first observing run, LIGO observed two more signals from black-hole binaries, one moderately loud, another at the boundary of statistical significance. The detections mark the end of a decades-long quest, and the beginning of GW astronomy: finally, we are able to probe the unseen, electromagnetically dark Universe by listening to it. In this article, we present a short historical overview of GW science: this young discipline combines GR, arguably the crowning achievement of classical physics, with record-setting, ultra-low-noise laser interferometry, and with some of the most powerful developments in the theory of differential geometry, partial differential equations, high-performance computation, numerical analysis, signal processing, statistical inference, and data science. Our emphasis is on the synergy between these disciplines, and how mathematics, broadly understood, has historically played, and continues to play, a crucial role in the development of GW science. We focus on black holes, which are very pure mathematical solutions of Einstein's gravitational-field equations that are nevertheless realized in Nature, and that provided the first observed signals.

17DTIC ADA288754: A Multiresolution Representation And Numerical Algorithms: A Brief Review.
By Defense Technical Information Center
In this paper we review recent developments in techniques to represent data in terms of its local scale components. These techniques enable us to obtain data compression by eliminating scale-coefficients which are sufficiently small. This capability for data compression can be used to reduce the cost of many numerical solution algorithms by either applying it to the numerical solution operator in order to get an approximate sparse representation, or by applying it to the numerical solution itself in order to reduce the number of quantities that need to be computed.

19A Switched Dynamical System Framework For Analysis Of Massively Parallel Asynchronous Numerical Algorithms
By Kooktae Lee, Raktim Bhattacharya and Vijay Gupta
In the near future, massively parallel computing systems will be necessary to solve computation intensive applications. The key bottleneck in massively parallel implementation of numerical algorithms is the synchronization of data across processing elements (PEs) after each iteration, which results in significant idle time. Thus, there is a trend towards relaxing the synchronization and adopting an asynchronous model of computation to reduce idle time. However, it is not clear what is the effect of this relaxation on the stability and accuracy of the numerical algorithm. In this paper we present a new framework to analyze such algorithms. We treat the computation in each PE as a dynamical system and model the asynchrony as stochastic switching. The overall system is then analyzed as a switched dynamical system. However, modeling of massively parallel numerical algorithms as switched dynamical systems results in a very large number of modes, which makes current analysis tools available for such systems computationally intractable. We develop new techniques that circumvent this scalability issue. The framework is presented on a one-dimensional heat equation as a case study and the proposed analysis framework is verified by solving the partial differential equation (PDE) in a $\mathtt{nVIDIA\: Tesla^{\scriptsize{TM}}}$ GPU machine, with asynchronous communication between cores.

20Improved Algorithms For Computing Worst Value-at-Risk: Numerical Challenges And The Adaptive Rearrangement Algorithm
By Marius Hofert, Amir Memartoluie, David Saunders and Tony Wirjanto
Numerical challenges inherent in algorithms for computing worst Value-at-Risk in homogeneous portfolios are identified and solutions as well as words of warning concerning their implementation are provided. Furthermore, both conceptual and computational improvements to the Rearrangement Algorithm for approximating worst Value-at-Risk for portfolios with arbitrary marginal loss distributions are given. In particular, a novel Adaptive Rearrangement Algorithm is introduced and investigated. These algorithms are implemented using the R package qrmtools.

23DTIC ADA315262: Fast Numerical Algorithms & SAR Applications.
By Defense Technical Information Center
Several fast signal processing algorithms applicable in target detection and recognition techniques have been developed. These include a novel accurate and efficient method for replacing IIR filters by FIR filters, a method for multiresolution implementation of operators via filter banks, a multiresolution strategy for numerical homogenization and an algorithm for Unequally Spaced Fast Fourier Transform (USFFT) in multiple dimensions. The USFFT algorithm was one of the specific goals of the proposal. This algorithm was shown to be about 20% more efficient than the previous approach. It was also used as a part of a code for computing antenna far field patterns from near field measurements.

24DTIC ADA586691: Towards High Resolution Numerical Algorithms For Wave Dominated Physical Phenomena
By Defense Technical Information Center
During this project several new numerical algorithms were designed, analyzed, and implemented with the goal of accelerating computational experiments in time-domain electromagnetics and acoustics. Novel results include a new family of radiation boundary conditions used for truncating computational domains used in external scattering simulations. A new filter and also local time stepping method were created for stabilizing coarse temporal approximations for discontinuous Galerkin time-domain computations. In additional work a new tiling algorithm was developed allowing large numbers of polyomino tiles to be arranged to cover a two dimensional shape without leaving gaps. This abstract algorithm has application in the design of passive array antenna to minimize side-lobe radiation.

25Algorithms For The Continuous Nonlinear Resource Allocation Problem---new Implementations And Numerical Studies
By Michael Patriksson and Christoffer Strömberg
Patriksson (2008) provided a then up-to-date survey on the continuous, separable, differentiable and convex resource allocation problem with a single resource constraint. Since the publication of that paper the interest in the problem has grown: several new applications have arisen where the problem at hand constitutes a subproblem, and several new algorithms have been developed for its efficient solution. This paper therefore serves three purposes. First, it provides an up-to-date extension of the survey of the literature of the field, complementing the survey in Patriksson (2008) with more then 20 books and articles. Second, it contributes improvements of some of these algorithms, in particular with an improvement of the pegging (that is, variable fixing) process in the relaxation algorithm, and an improved means to evaluate subsolutions. Third, it numerically evaluates several relaxation (primal) and breakpoint (dual) algorithms, incorporating a variety of pegging strategies, as well as a quasi-Newton method. Our conclusion is that our modification of the relaxation algorithm performs the best. At least for problem sizes up to 30 million variables the practical time complexity for the breakpoint and relaxation algorithms is linear.

26DTIC ADA206756: Numerical Evaluation And Comparison Of Subcycling Algorithms For Structural Dynamics
By Defense Technical Information Center
This report compares numerical results obtained from seven proposed subcycling algorithms which were used to solve three test problems. The numerical results show that three of the subcycling algorithms - TRANAL, and the linear and quadratic nodal interpolation schemes - produced accurate and stable solutions. The free element partition algorithm produced stable but significantly inaccurate results for two of the three test problems. Subsequently, the two best algorithms - TRANAL and the linear nodal interpolation algorithm - were used to solve a larger test problem. Keywords: Structural dynamics; Numerical analysis.

27DTIC ADA057962: Numerical Algorithms For Nonlinearly Constrained Optimization.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This dissertation is concerned with the development and numerical implementation of algorithms for solving finite dimensional optimization problems. Special emphasis is given to robustness, by which is meant the ability of an algorithm to cope with adverse circumstances, whether due to pathologies of a particular problem or to the shortcomings of finite precision computer arithmetic. A uniform framework is developed in which a common set of techniques may be applied to all of the standard problems of optimization. The algorithms are based on Newton-like methods implemented in a robust manner by means of hybrid, curved line searches and stable linear algebra techniques. Developed first in the context of systems of nonlinear equations, nonlinear least squares, and unconstrained minimization, the algorithms are combined and extended to include problems with equality or inequality constraints. Constrained problems are handled by means of separate line searches in the range and null spaces of the matrix of constraint normals. The classical Lagrangian is modified to allow the same Newton-like methods to be applied to inequality constraints. Test results are presented which show the validity and promise of the methods developed in this dissertation. (Author)

28NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19840014530: Dynamics Analysis Of Electrodynamic Satellite Tethers. Equations Of Motion And Numerical Solution Algorithms For The Tether
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The equations of motion are developed for a perfectly flexible, inelastic tether with a satellite at its extremity. The tether is attached to a space vehicle in orbit. The tether is allowed to possess electrical conductivity. A numerical solution algorithm to provide the motion of the tether and satellite system is presented. The resulting differential equations can be solved by various existing standard numerical integration computer programs. The resulting differential equations allow the introduction of approximations that can lead to analytical, approximate general solutions. The differential equations allow more dynamical insight of the motion.

By Defense Technical Information Center
This report describes research and development of efficient algorithms and computer architectures for certain Strategic Defense Initiative processing tasks. Spin rate, phase retrieval, and superresolution were analyzed. Efficient mappings of pertinent convolution, Hilbert and Wigner-Ville transforms, and an SVD onto a novel parallel/pipelined architecture were established. An ultrafast E/O interface method to high speed electronic circuits is described. The proposed solution is a fast SIMD/MIND machine capable of teraop speeds, combining multiple 4-PE horizontally microprogrammable nodes onto a mesh-connected organization (fiber-optics).

During this research period progress was made on the system integration of the software tasker to support algorithmic and applications segmentation for concurrent computing. This permits an efficient distribution of code and data on processing elements. The tasker provides primitives to support the segmenting of processes, monitors execution on worker processors by the manager on each concurrent system, and achieves asynchronous communication among worker processors and between the manager processor and the workers. 33NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900002916: Numerical Experience With A Class Of Algorithms For Nonlinear Optimization Using Inexact Function And Gradient Information
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
For optimization problems associated with engineering design, parameter estimation, image reconstruction, and other optimization/simulation applications, low accuracy function and gradient values are frequently much less expensive to obtain than high accuracy values. Here, researchers investigate the computational performance of trust region methods for nonlinear optimization when high accuracy evaluations are unavailable or prohibitively expensive, and confirm earlier theoretical predictions when the algorithm is convergent even with relative gradient errors of 0.5 or more. The proper choice of the amount of accuracy to use in function and gradient evaluations can result in orders-of-magnitude savings in computational cost.

34NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19810011267: Numerical Algorithms For Finite Element Computations On Arrays Of Microprocessors
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The development of a multicolored successive over relaxation (SOR) program for the finite element machine is discussed. The multicolored SOR method uses a generalization of the classical Red/Black grid point ordering for the SOR method. These multicolored orderings have the advantage of allowing the SOR method to be implemented as a Jacobi method, which is ideal for arrays of processors, but still enjoy the greater rate of convergence of the SOR method. The program solves a general second order self adjoint elliptic problem on a square region with Dirichlet boundary conditions, discretized by quadratic elements on triangular regions. For this general problem and discretization, six colors are necessary for the multicolored method to operate efficiently. The specific problem that was solved using the six color program was Poisson's equation; for Poisson's equation, three colors are necessary but six may be used. In general, the number of colors needed is a function of the differential equation, the region and boundary conditions, and the particular finite element used for the discretization.

35On Numerical Algorithms For The Solution Of A Beltrami Equation
By Denis Gaydashev and Dmitry Khmelev
The paper concerns numerical algorithms for solving the Beltrami equation $f_{\bar{z}}(z)=\mu(z) f_z(z)$ for a compactly supported $\mu$. First, we study an efficient algorithm that has been proposed in the literature, and present its rigorous justification. We then propose a different scheme for solving the Beltrami equation which has a comparable speed and accuracy, but has the virtue of a greater simplicity of implementation.

36NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19950010851: Multiresolution Representation And Numerical Algorithms: A Brief Review
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
In this paper we review recent developments in techniques to represent data in terms of its local scale components. These techniques enable us to obtain data compression by eliminating scale-coefficients which are sufficiently small. This capability for data compression can be used to reduce the cost of many numerical solution algorithms by either applying it to the numerical solution operator in order to get an approximate sparse representation, or by applying it to the numerical solution itself in order to reduce the number of quantities that need to be computed.

37DTIC AD1008340: Static Analysis Numerical Algorithms
By Defense Technical Information Center
This document reports on a two-year research project by Kestrel Technology and Honeywell Aerospace Advanced Technology to combine model-based development of complex avionics control software with static analysis of the generated code to achieve assurance levels not available from either technique practiced separately. We concentrated on two classes of numerical algorithms, linear digital filters and integrating accumulators, modifying existing versions of Honeywells HiLiTE model-based development system and Kestrels CodeHawk abstract interpretation system to share domain specific information about implementations of these algorithms. This allowed CodeHawk to exploit model-level specifications and theoretical input bounds from HiLiTE concerning the generated C code, producing a much more precise over-approximation of the output bounds and accumulated floating-point error bounds than would be possible with generic abstract interpretation techniques. These static analysis results were then fed back into HiLiTE to be further exploited in the formal verification of the generated code.

38DTIC ADA126705: Steady-State Solutions Of The Euler Equations In Two Dimensions: Rotating And Translating V-States With Limiting Cases. I. Numerical Algorithms And Results,
By Defense Technical Information Center
New second- and third-order algorithms are presented for calculating translating and rotating steady-state solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equations (which we call V-state). These are piecewise constant regions of vorticity and the contours bounding them are obtained by solving iteratively a nonlinear integro-differential equation. New limiting contours with corners are obtained and compared with local analytical solutions. The precise results correct mistakes for limiting contours that were previously given. (Author)

39NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19840024988: On The Impact Of Communication Complexity In The Design Of Parallel Numerical Algorithms
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
This paper describes two models of the cost of data movement in parallel numerical algorithms. One model is a generalization of an approach due to Hockney, and is suitable for shared memory multiprocessors where each processor has vector capabilities. The other model is applicable to highly parallel nonshared memory MIMD systems. In the second model, algorithm performance is characterized in terms of the communication network design. Techniques used in VLSI complexity theory are also brought in, and algorithm independent upper bounds on system performance are derived for several problems that are important to scientific computation.

Numerical results for ground state and excited state properties (energies, double occupancies, and Matsubara-axis self energies) of the single-orbital Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice are presented, in order to provide an assessment of our ability to compute accurate results in the thermodynamic limit. Many methods are employed, including auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo, bare and bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo, method of dual fermions, density matrix embedding theory, density matrix renormalization group, dynamical cluster approximation, diffusion Monte Carlo within a fixed node approximation, unrestricted coupled cluster theory, and multi-reference projected Hartree-Fock. Comparison of results obtained by different methods allows for the identification of uncertainties and systematic errors. The importance of extrapolation to converged thermodynamic limit values is emphasized. Cases where agreement between different methods is obtained establish benchmark results that may be useful in the validation of new approaches and the improvement of existing methods.

44Linear-Time Approximation Algorithms For Computing Numerical Summation With Provably Small Errors
By Ming-Yang Kao and Jie Wang
Given a multiset $X=\{x_1,..., x_n\}$ of real numbers, the {\it floating-point set summation} problem asks for $S_n=x_1+...+x_n$. Let $E^*_n$ denote the minimum worst-case error over all possible orderings of evaluating $S_n$. We prove that if $X$ has both positive and negative numbers, it is NP-hard to compute $S_n$ with the worst-case error equal to $E^*_n$. We then give the first known polynomial-time approximation algorithm that has a provably small error for arbitrary $X$. Our algorithm incurs a worst-case error at most $2(\mix)E^*_n$.\footnote{All logarithms $\log$ in this paper are base 2.} After $X$ is sorted, it runs in O(n) time. For the case where $X$ is either all positive or all negative, we give another approximation algorithm with a worst-case error at most $\lceil\log\log n\rceil E^*_n$. Even for unsorted $X$, this algorithm runs in O(n) time. Previously, the best linear-time approximation algorithm had a worst-case error at most $\lceil\log n\rceil E^*_n$, while $E^*_n$ was known to be attainable in $O(n \log n)$ time using Huffman coding.

46Microsoft Research Audio 103751: Numerical Algorithms In Material Science
By Microsoft Research
The talk will consist of two parts. In the first part, I will present prior work aimed at developing new algorithms for materials science applications. I developed a novel numerical method to optimize the shape of mechanical parts and maximize their strength. This optimization problem was extremely challenging as it involved changing the topology and therefore classical optimization methods do not apply. A similar idea can be applied to model shape memory alloys and plasticity in metals. In this project, the optimization led to the construction of a tree of laminated microstructures. Constraints from mechanical equilibrium were used to construct an adaptive tree and to determine the optimal number of levels. The second part involves more recent work. I will present the implementation of a new heat flux algorithm to understand failures in micro-devices in LAMMPS (Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator); LAMMPS is a high performance code which was benchmarked on Blue Gene L with 90% parallel efficiency. Also I am currently extending the capabilities of ParaDiS (Parallel Dislocation Simulator), another high performance code which has run on 135k processors of Blue Gene L. ©2008 Microsoft Corporation. 47Numerical Algorithms For 1-d Backward Stochastic Differential Equations: Convergence And Simulations
By Shige Peng and Mingyu Xu
In this paper we study different algorithms for backward stochastic differential equations (BSDE in short) basing on random walk framework for 1-dimensional Brownian motion. Implicit and explicit schemes for both BSDE and reflected BSDE are introduced. Then we prove the convergence of different algorithms and present simulation results for different types of BSDEs.

49Numerical Algorithms For Finding Balanced Metrics On Vector Bundles
By Reza Seyyedali
In \cite{D3}, Donaldson defines a dynamical system on the space of Fubini-Study metrics on a polarized compact K\"ahler manifold. Sano proved that if there exists a balanced metric for the polarization, then this dynamical system always converges to the balanced metric (\cite{S}). In \cite{DKLR}, Douglas, et. al., conjecture that the same holds in the case of vector bundles. In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to their conjecture.
