The first 1,000 days from conception onwards significantly shape people’s lives (Karakochuk et al., 2017). The early prenatal and postnatal environment has lifelong consequences through influence on the development of all vital systems, including the brain and central nervous system (Burrris et al., 2022; de Weerth & Buitelaar, 2005; Friedman et al., 2015; Ismail et al., 2017; Oh et al., 2018). Pregnancy, birth, and the early postnatal period are challenging transitions for parents. Parents often experience many positive emotions, but are also prone to psychological distress, physical or health issues (Field, 2010; Norholt, 2020; Strehlke et al., 2025). Resources in and around the family, such as supportive partner relationships or social support networks, can mitigate stress. However, when parental challenges surpass their resources, parents can experience stress. In families with acute or chronic stress this may increase the risk of an infant growing up in an unsafe or unpredictable environment. Early life stress Acute or chronic exposure to unsafe and unpredictable environments during the first 1,000 days can lead to a dysregulation of the biological stress response system, and this reaction of the body is referred to as early life stress (ELS). In the current study, we define stress as the body’s response to a threatened homeostasis, and the external or internal stimulant threatening this homeostasis is referred to as a stressor (Chrousos & Gold, 1992; Loman & Gunnar, 2010). ELS can ‘go under the skin’ and be measured via biomarkers and physiological measures such as cortisol levels (Fogelman, 2019). However, it is not always possible to measure stress this way, especially in infants, which is why (non-biological) proxies of ELS derived from reported and observed stress measures are also used for this age group (see Figure 1). ELS negatively affects the immune, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and other organ systems (de Bellis, 2014; Fogelman, 2019; O’Connor, 2021; Shonkhoff, 2012). ELS has a long-term negative impact on physical and psychological development. For example, adverse childhood experiences (e.g. maltreatment) have been linked to a dysregulation of the stress system (Bucci et al., 2016) and in turn related to more obesity, poorer cognitive and motor development, more mental health problems (Fogelman, 2019; Huebner, 2016; Pervanidou, 2020) and more risky health behaviors (e.g. smoking and alcohol abuse) decades later (Friedman et al., 2015; Wickrama et al., 2017). Subsequently, ELS drives up healthcare and other societal costs due to, for example, higher need for (mental) healthcare, and decreasing quality of life (De Bellis, 2019). Parental resources In infants, the stress-response system is developing rapidly. A crucial part in the development of the stress-response system is the infant’s caregiving environment. The caregiving environment provides external support and regulation (Fotopoulou et al., 2021; Hofer, 1995; Laurent et al., 2016). Parents can serve as buffers by merely being present or by actively helping the infant to regulate their emotions through touch or talking (Gunnar, 2021). However, parents can also be the source of stress in situations where they are emotionally unavailable, frightening or maltreating towards the infant (de Weerth, 2018; Goodman et al., 2011; Fogelman, 2019; Pervanidou, 2020; Pijpers, 2019 Tottenham, 2021). In these cases, where external regulation is poor or lacking, the physiological and behavioral stress-response systems of the infant can be dysregulated which in turn can result in poor developmental outcomes (Feldman, 2010; Levine, 2005; Loman & Gunnar, 2010). In order to sufficiently offset the negative and severe stressors that can lead to ELS, parents can use resources. We define parental resources as assets that parents can draw on to ensure a safe and predictable environment for their infants (Liu & Xie, 2015). Parental resources include, for example, the family support network, parents’ cognitive skills, parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices. When stressors outweigh the parental resources, an imbalance occurs which in turn can lead to an increased risk of ELS. Supporting parents A balance between parental stressors and resources is crucial for parents to be able to provide stable care and to create a safe and predictable environment for their infants. In situations of (expected) imbalance, a much-used pathway to mitigate stress is support to parents. Support can take the form of equipping parents with the tools to cope with stressors, but it can also focus strengthening the existing parental resources (Britto et al., 2017; Jeong et al., 2021). Research on ways to support parents to create a stable and safe rearing environment has received significant attention over the past decades, resulting in a myriad of types of support for families. A large body of knowledge, including extensive reviews and meta-analyses, generated support for effectiveness of early interventions targeting parents, children and the family as a whole during the first 1,000 days on infant, parent and parent-child outcomes (Branco et al., 2021; Britto et al., 2017; Rayce et al., 2020). The diversity and complexity of stressors encountered by parents in the general population necessitate interventions that are flexible and context sensitive. Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that a promising setting for implementing early family support is within the community that these families reside in (Britto et al., 2017; McCalman et al., 2017; Sawyer et al., 2017; West et al., 2019). Family support in the community setting We define community-based family support as support available to all expecting and new parents within community institutions such as hospitals, clinics- and cultural centers. It includes support and care offered from conception to postnatal phase such as prenatal care (e.g., gynecologists, obstetricians or midwives) and postnatal care (e.g., well-baby visits or maternity care, family pediatrician). By implementing the support in these readily and easily accessible spaces, where most parents and families can be reached, the chances are higher that many families receive the support they need in a timely manner (McLeroy et al., 2003). In the current study, family support refers to all preventive and promotive interventions, methods, services, and programs available to parents. We include support that not only prepares expecting parents for parenthood but also support that improves or stimulates better parenting practices, parent-child interactions, and community and network building. Furthermore, we focus on both universal and targeted forms of support, in which targeted support refers to support provided to families with infants (at risk of) experiencing early life stress.  Community-based family support services: mixed findings Many reviews assess the effectiveness of community-based family support. In these reviews, the community has been operationalized in different ways, limiting comparability. The community is seen as a setting (geographical location of intervening), an agent (intervening whilst strengthening and respecting community networks and organizations), a resource (utilizing the community assets) and a target (intervening by targeting the community; McLeroy et al., 2003). Furthermore, reviews often focus on specific types of support for parents (e.g., video-feedback training), primarily for mothers (Shaw et al., 2006) and span a wide child age range (from pregnancy to age 5 or older; e.g., Shah et al., 2022). Moreover, existing reviews report on separate outcome levels; i.e. parent (Lo & Cho, 2021; Rosenblum et al., 2020; Shaw et al., 2006), parent-child (Alves et al., 2024) and child (Hirve et al., 2022), and include varying (or no) comparison groups (e.g., usual or routine care; Hall, 2011 Sacks et al., 2017) Lastly, reviews report the effects of community-based support target specific stressors (e.g. maltreatment; Lo & Cho, 2021) or specific high risk or clinical populations (Shaw et al., 2006; West et al., 2020). Overall, these reviews report mixed but promising effects on the various outcome levels. Taken together, existing reviews on community-based support provide extensive but scattered knowledge. Given the variation in populations, interventions, comparisons, and outcomes (PICO, Schiavenato & Chu, 2021), a systematic synthesis is needed to disentangle to what extent community-based family support services during the infants’ first 1,000 days prevent or reduce the negative effects of early life stress in families. The current study: stress reduction through community-based family support services Paradoxically, the available extensive but mixed and scattered evidence on community-based support makes it difficult for professionals to determine which support is best to implement for which families. Currently, an overview of accessible effective family support offered specifically within the community during the first 1,000 days is still lacking. In the current study, we therefore explore and summarize the empirical studies on the effectiveness of community-based universal and targeted forms of support that are implemented to help restore the balance between stressors and parental resources during the first 1,000 days.

The research project uses inductive and qualitative methods to investigate the possible negative effects of skills on patients with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). In a 45-minute guided interview, patients are asked about the use of skills, NSSI, and changes in tension and self-harm pressure after engaging in self-harming behaviors and skills. Topics such as suicidality, skills training, and situations in which skills and NSSI are used are also discussed. The interviews conducted are transcribed verbatim using MAXQDA and then evaluated in a qualitative content analysis according to Kuckartz. Within the content analysis, an inductive categorization of main and subcategories takes place. The aim of the study is to use the collected data to conduct a qualitative content analysis and, based on this, to generate hypotheses for further research. The target sample size is 12 patients. Of these, 6 should be over the age of 18 and 6 between the ages of 15 and 18. Within these two groups, 3 males and 3 females should be recruited. During recruitment, potential participants are screened. This screening includes the inclusion and exclusion criteria for study participation. These criteria are that patients must have self-harmed on five different days in the last year, must not have any schizophrenic disorders, and must not exhibit any psychotic or delusional symptoms at the time of the survey. Patients must also be at least 15 years old. In addition, the DSM-V criteria for non-suicidal self-harming behavior must be met. If the screening shows that patients do not fulfill these criteria, they will not be admitted to the study.

This systematic review and meta-analysis, conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, aims to synthesize current evidence on the prevalence, clinical correlates, and prognostic value of negative symptoms in first-episode psychosis (FEP). Strong negative electron affinity effects have been observed on the surface of as-grown chemical vapor deposited diamond using Secondary Electron Emission. The test samples were randomly oriented and the surface was terminated with hydrogen. The effect appears as an intensive peak in the low energy part of the spectrum of the electron energy distribution and may be described in the model of effective negative electron affinity.

A new seal concept, the negative lift circumferential type seal, was evaluated under simulated helicopter transmission conditions. The bore of the circumferential seal contains step type geometry which produces a negative lift that urges the sealing segments towards the shaft surface. The seal size was a 2.5 inch bore and the test speeds were 7000 and 14,250 rpm. During the 300 hour test at typical transmission seal pressure (to 2 psig) the leakage was within acceptable limits and generally less than 0.1 cc/hour during the last 150 hours of testing. The wear to the carbon segments during the 300 hours was negligible.

We study the realization of supergroup gauge theories using negative branes in string theory. We show that negative branes are intimately connected with the possibility of timelike compactification and exotic spacetime signatures previously studied by Hull. Isolated negative branes dynamically generate a change in spacetime signature near their worldvolumes, and are related by string dualities to a smooth M-theory geometry with closed timelike curves. Using negative D3 branes, we show that $SU(0|N)$ supergroup theories are holographically dual to an exotic variant of type IIB string theory on $dS_{3,2} \times \bar S^5$, for which the emergent dimensions are timelike. Using branes, mirror symmetry and Nekrasov's instanton calculus, all of which agree, we derive the Seiberg-Witten curve for $\mathcal N=2 ~SU(N|M)$ gauge theories. Together with our exploration of holography and string dualities for negative branes, this suggests that supergroup gauge theories may be non-perturbatively well-defined objects, though several puzzles remain.

We present experimental and theoretical results on an acoustic metamaterial that exhibits negative effective modulus in a frequency range from 0 to 450 Hz. One-dimensional acoustic metamaterial with an array of side holes on a tube was fabricated. We observed that acoustic waves above 450 Hz propagated well in this structure, but no sound below 450 Hz passed through. The frequency characteristics of the metamaterial has the same form as that of the permittivity in metals due to the plasma oscillation. We also provide a theory to explain the experimental results.

Bipartite and tripartite EPR-Bell type systems are examined via joint quasi-probability distributions where elementary probabilities are permitted to be negative. It is shown that such distributions exist only when the no-signalling condition is satisfied. A characteristic measure, the probability mass, is introduced and, via its minimization, limits the number of quasi-distributions describing a given marginal probability distribution. The minimized probability mass is shown to be an alternative way to characterize non-local systems. Non-signalling polytopes for two, three, and four settings in the bipartite scenario are examined and compared to prior work. Examining perfect cloning of non-local systems within the tripartite scenario suggests defining two categories of signalling. It is seen that many properties of non-local systems can be efficiently described by quasi-probability theory.

We derive a cut-and-paste surgery formula of Seiberg--Witten invariants for negative definite plumbed rational homology 3-spheres. It is similar to (and motivated by) Okuma's recursion formula [arXiv:math.AG/0610464, 4.5] targeting analytic invariants of splice quotient singularities. The two formulas combined provide automatically a proof of the equivariant version [arXiv:math.AG/0310084, 5.2(b)] of the `Seiberg--Witten invariant conjecture' [arXiv:math.AG/0111298] for these singularities.

It is well known that quantum effects can produce negative energy densities, though for limited times. Here we show in the context of two-dimensional CFT that such negative energy densities are present in any non-trivial conformal vacuum and can be interpreted in terms of the entanglement structure of such states. We derive an exact identity relating the outgoing energy flux and the entanglement entropy in the in-vacuum. When applied to two-dimensional models of black hole evaporation, this identity implies that unitarity is incompatible with monotonic mass loss.
