This new book on PHP 7 introduces writing solid, secure, object-oriented code in the new PHP 7: you will create a complete three-tier application using a natural process of building and testing modules within each tier. This Memorandum will try to draw some conclusions from the experience gained by the different implementations of modular compilation in Algol 68. This challenge is meant for Sphero Robots, but I bet It can be scaled up or down for other robots. It includes three different maze types that can be re-arranged to change the path Sphero will have to travel through to constantly challenge students with math and programming tasks. We were able to print these maze blocks at Camp Sachem's Summer Enrichment Program this summer using a Makerbot Replicator that we had on loan as part of a Federal Grant. The size of these puzzle pieces allow them to easily store in a small flip top Sterilite container with the ability to stack 10 to 12 in a box. This is a necessity since our mentoring program will have to pack up onto a cart in order for us to be able to bring the robots and mazes from school to school. They are also able to be printed with any 6x6 or larger printer very easily and fairly quickly with low resolution. I recommend using masking tape on the backside of the seams to secure them together but I may try adhesive velcro and a 20"x20" coroplast or masonite board in the future so that younger students can arrange the mazes by themselves.

The concept of Modular Audiovisual Multimedia Programing, which is generally applicable to meeting the need for automated mass training, has been implemented in an electronic blueprint reading course for industrial employees. A preliminary study revealed that the average prospective student was 25 to 35 years old, limited to a high school education, and insufficiently skilled in electronic symbols and recognition and locating information on blueprints. The material to be learned was organized in nine instructional modules, then presented through several media. A total of 196 color slides was accompanied by commentary on magnetic tape, and each student was supplied with a kit of support materials, including programed instruction and self-evaluation exercises. The course was found suitable for use in the work area and was then self-administered by groups of from one to twenty individuals. Instructional time averaged about six hours, but the total time involved depended on speed of preparation and the number of sessions used to study the nine modules. Comparison of initial and final test scores indicated a significant transference of the desired skills. Management personnel and most of the students expressed satisfaction with the structure, content, and effectiveness of the course. (RM)

To date there are no evidence-based comprehensive interventions for use in school settings. There are numerous barriers to delivery of high-quality interventions in schools that have limited the transfer of research-based interventions to school settings. "Modular Approach to Autism Programing for Schools (MAAPS)" is a framework for implementation of evidence-based interventions in school settings that is designed to address these barriers. The development and initial evaluation of MAAPS was conducted using an implementation-science framework and results indicate that MAAPS is aligned with needs and resources available in schools, that it had excellent social validity, and that there is good evidence that MAAPS is effective for addressing core and associated features of autism in educational settings. This paper describes design patterns used in developing a software platform for mobile robot teams engaged in distributed sensing and exploration tasks. The goal of the system presented is to minimize redundancy throughout the development and execution pipelines by exploring the application of a strong type system to both the collaborative development process and runtime behaviors of mobile sensor platforms. The solution we have implemented addresses both sides of this equation simultaneously by providing a system for self-describing inputs and outputs that facilitates code reuse among human developers and autonomous agents. This well-defined modularity allows us to treat executable code libraries as atomic elements that can be automatically shared across the network. In this fashion, we improve the performance of our development team by addressing software framework usability and the performance and capabilities of sensor networks engaged in distributed data processing. This framework adds robust design templates and greater communication flexibility onto a component system similar to TinyOS and NesC while avoiding the development effort and overhead required to field a full-fledged web services or Jini-based infrastructure. The software platform described herein has been used to field collaborative teams of UGVs and UAVs in exploration and monitoring scenarios.

It is shown that a modular design problem can be transformed into a problem of minimizing a separable convex function subject to linear equality constraints and nonnegativities. This transformation is effected by using a generalized inverse of the constraint matrix. Moreover the nature of the functional and the constraints of the separable problem are such that a good starting point for its solution can be obtained by solving a particular transportation problem. Several possible methods for solving the separable problem are discussed, and the results of our computational experience with these methods are given. It is also shown that the modular design problem can be viewed as a special case of a large class of general engineering design problems that have been discussed in the literature.

We propose a novel compact linear programming (LP) relaxation for binary sub-modular MRF in the context of object segmentation. Our model is obtained by linearizing an $l_1^+$-norm derived from the quadratic programming (QP) form of the MRF energy. The resultant LP model contains significantly fewer variables and constraints compared to the conventional LP relaxation of the MRF energy. In addition, unlike QP which can produce ambiguous labels, our model can be viewed as a quasi-total-variation minimization problem, and it can therefore preserve the discontinuities in the labels. We further establish a relaxation bound between our LP model and the conventional LP model. In the experiments, we demonstrate our method for the task of interactive object segmentation. Our LP model outperforms QP when converting the continuous labels to binary labels using different threshold values on the entire Oxford interactive segmentation dataset. The computational complexity of our LP is of the same order as that of the QP, and it is significantly lower than the conventional LP relaxation.

This thesis examines synchronization constructs from the standpoint of language design for reliable software. The criteria a synchronization mechanism must satisfy to support construction of reliable, easily maintainable concurrent software are defined. Some of these criteria, such as expressive power, can be defined only with respect to the set of problems the mechanism is expected to handle. A definition of the range of problems considered to be synchronization problems is therefore needed. Such a definition is provided by describing the possible types of constraints that may be imposed on access to shared resources. We then use this taxonomy of synchronization constraints to develop techniques for evaluating how well synchronization constructs meet the criteria discussed. These techniques are then applied to three existing synchronization mechanisms: monitors, path expressions, and serializers. Evaluations are presented, and the three mechanisms compared. (Author)

A modular computer program for subject access to multiple fixed-vocabulary bibliographic data bases has been developed. It is written in PL/I and Assembler Language for operation on the IBM 360 Model 91 computer at the University of California, Los Angeles, and can run on a computer as small as an IBM 360 Model 50. The program (MULFSCH) described represents an intermediate stage in software development for the Center for Information Services (CIS). As such, its principal value to the CIS project is in development of the various procedures (acquisition, cataloging, retrieval, etc.) attendant to the operation of the CIS.
