3Progress In The Development Of High Degree Potential Coefficient Models

By

A natural extension of the recent satellite derived potential coefficient models is the development of high degree (maximum 180 or 360) expansions. Such expansions are based on the combination of the satellite derived models with terrestrial gravity data and satellite altimeter data. Such models are useful for more precise geoid undulation computations, for simulation studies involving different typed of future missions (e.g., gradiometry), and as reference fields for different types of gravimetric computations. The attention is to the effect of the terrain, ellipsoidal terms, and weighting. The basic methods used for the high degree solutions are reviewed. Various correction terms are described and recent models are discussed and compared.

8Development And Evaluation Of Two Learning-Based Personalized Driver Models For Car-Following Behaviors

By

Personalized driver models play a key role in the development of advanced driver assistance systems and automated driving systems. Traditionally, physical-based driver models with fixed structures usually lack the flexibility to describe the uncertainties and high non-linearity of driver behaviors. In this paper, two kinds of learning-based car-following personalized driver models were developed using naturalistic driving data collected from the University of Michigan Safety Pilot Model Deployment program. One model is developed by combining the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and the Hidden Markov Model (HMM), and the other one is developed by combining the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and Probability Density Functions (PDF). Fitting results between the two approaches were analyzed with different model inputs and numbers of GMM components. Statistical analyses show that both models provide good performance of fitting while the GMM--PDF approach shows a higher potential to increase the model accuracy given a higher dimension of training data.

14ERIC ED091238: Macroanalysis: A Step Toward The Development Of Discussion Catalysts And Instructional Models.

By

Reported is an observational analysis process termed "macroanalysis" which involves the analysis of interactive dialogue in chains or sequences of coded behavior rather than in terms of conventional matrices and ratios. All existing 3-, 4-, and 5-tally chains are extracted directly from an observer's coded tallies. This paper includes a presentation of the Campbell-Rose Interaction System, a definition and discussion of units of dialogue and of discussion catalysts (which include what Rowe calls "wait-time"). A list of 13 references is also included. (PEB)

15Appraising Capability Models For Conceptualising The Development Of Competencies Amongst Students Of The Higher Technical Teachers' Training College (HTTTC), Kumba

By

Notions of competency have dominated the teacher education literature, and have underpinned Competency-Based Training in educational leadership at all levels of education and training. The emergence of counter-narratives underpinned by the capability movement, have as yet had minimal impact on practice in teacher education. New discourses in educational theory and practice which are founded on non-linear approaches to learning and teaching provide added impetus to engage in the competency/capability debate, and re-examine our approaches to educational leadership. This paper explores complexity theories and demonstrates how complexity's pedagogical implications can lead to new models for understanding educational leadership learning and teaching. A new model for conceptualizing end-user educational leadership is presented that was derived from a three-year action research initiative with pre-service teachers. The premise of the study assumed that there is no relationship between the capability approach and the development of students' competencies in the Higher Technical Teachers' Training College Kumba. The study had as specific objectives to identify the teaching and learning strategies used, examine the use of the Capability approach in the development of competencies of students and the challenges faced by both the students and teachers in the implementation of the capability approach in developing competencies in the Higher Technical Teachers' Training College Kumba. The sample constituted 190 questionnaires administered to the students of HTTTC Kumba and 5 interviewed conducted with teachers of the school. The findings of this study showed that teachers of the HTTTC Kumba highly implement group discussion, brainstorming and demonstration whereas role play and lecture/presentation methods are only implemented to a lesser extent. Findings also showed that the students have the freedom and are guided towards what they are best at doing but for the fact that resources are insufficient to facilitate the implementation of this approach. The spearman rank correlation was 0.586 indicating a strong positive relationship between the use of the capability approach and the development of students' competences in HTTTC Kumba. The study concluded in favour of Sen's findings that technical education today is the most valuable means by which the quality of a country's development is determined. This is because capable people are more likely to be able to deal effectively with the turbulent environment in which they live by possessing this '˜all round' capacity. The important practical point stressed here however was that the development of core competences by students could lead, as a secondary effect, to a more sustainable and democratic society. As such, inferences was drawn that for Cameroon to become Emerging by the year 2035 competency development in Technical Education need to be given adequate attention. 16DTIC ADA254989: Development Of An Integrated Package Of Physics Models For Scene Simulation Studies To Support Smart Weapons Design Studies

By

The Balanced Technology Initiative (BTI) on Smart Weapons Operability Enhancement (SWOE) has as a goal to model the radiant field from complex natural backgrounds. During the three years of the program, the calculation of these radiant fields has evolved to produce a process, known as the SWOE Process, that will enable a smart weapons designer or tester to specify and obtain the data required to describe the physical characteristics and the environmental conditions of a scene, model the physical processes controlling the generation of the radiant field, and display and analyze the results of the simulated scene. In this, the last year of the BTI/SWOE program, the emphasis was on the delivery of a package of models on a computer platform for use in performing scene simulations for smart weapons design and testing applications. The efforts reported on here consisted of making enhancements to the SWOE thermal models and the design of a new Command Interface System and User Interface System.

17DTIC ADA080588: Development Of Wind Shear Models And Determination Of Wind Shear Hazards.

By

This work was concerned with specifying a large set of wind profiles for use in piloted simulator tests of low-level wind shear encountered during approach, landing, takeoff, and climbout. Candidate standard wind profiles for use in training and system qualification are also recommended. Measured and mathematically modeled wind data represented as a function of both aircraft altitude and distance are 'flown' with a fast-time computer model piloted by an idealized controller. The wind models and the runway position relative to each wind field are systematically varied to produce a number of different wind profiles. Based on aeronautical system performance in the computer, relative comparisons of wind profile severity are made, potentially hazardous wind profiles are identified, and their relative severity is designated as 'low', moderate, or high for purpose of piloted simulator tests. Piloted simulation results are used to verify the severity ratings. Effects of wind shear on aircraft are illustrated. Wind profile design techniques and implementation methods are discussed. The results of the wind shear hazard determination work indicate that the severity of a wind shear encounter is highly dependent on the position and alignment of the approach path with respect to the wind field and on the timing of the encounter. Both wind shear in the vertical wind component and wind shear in the longitudinal wind component can produce a hazardous condition; high severity wind shear is also hazardous on takeoff.

20DTIC ADA113869: Response Of Intermediate Scale Submarine Models To Simulated Nuclear Underwater Explosions. Volume I. Development Of Computational Procedures.

By

The physical significance of the terms in the Doubly Asymptotic Approximation (DAA) are evaluated. Additionally, the computational aspects of the terms are discussed. Two simplified versions of the DAA are proposed. These versions are referred to as the Plane Wave-Added Mass (PWAM) cylinder approximation and the PWAM plate approximation. Both approaches are evaluated via comparison to exact solutions and full DAA solutions. The PWAM plate approximation is shown to give results almost identical to the full DAA for problems dominated by structural deformation. Both methods appear to do a good job of picking up shell translation response. (Author)

21DTIC ADA106420: Analysis Of Data For The Development Of Density And Composition Models Of The Upper Atmosphere.

By

This work was directed toward the ultimate goal of developing an improved model of the temperature, density, and composition of that region of the earth's neutral atmosphere above the turbopause. A wealth of data has become available, mainly in the form of total density and composition from satellite-borne mass-spectrometers, in recent years. Most of the work performed under the contract consisted of the analysis of data from the ESRO 4 mass spectrometer with a view towards improvement of the model of the geomagnetic variation in the thermosphere and exosphere.

23ERIC ED010534: DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATIONAL THEORY DERIVED FROM THREE EDUCATIONAL THEORY MODELS. FINAL REPORT.

By

THE CONCERN OF THIS STUDY WAS TO SET FORTH HYPOTHESES ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR, HUMAN KNOWLEDGE, AND MATERIAL CHARACTERISTICS, AS FACTORS INVOLVED IN EDUCATION, AND THEN TO ESTABLISH WAYS FOR RELATING THE HYPOTHESES TO EMPIRICAL DATA. THE APPROACH TAKEN WAS TO INTERRELATE SET THEORY, INFORMATION THEORY, AND GRAPH THEORY WITH GENERAL SYSTEMS THEORY. USING THIS INTERRELATING PROCEDURE, THE INVESTIGATORS DEVELOPED A SYSTEM (THEORY MODEL) FOR RETRODUCING SCIENTIFIC EDUCATIONAL THEORY. (THEORY RETRODUCTION IS THE PROCESS OF ADDING CONTENT TO AN EXISTING THEORY MODEL TO FORM NEW THEORY.) THE NEWLY FORMED THEORY MODEL WAS THUS USED TO (1) DEFINE THE TERM, "SCHOOL," IN THE LANGUAGE OF A SYSTEM, (2) USE THE DEFINED SYSTEM TO GIVE MEANING TO THEORETICAL "SCHOOL PROPERTIES," AND (3) RELATE THESE "PROPERTIES" (FORM HYPOTHESES ABOUT "SCHOOL") TO CONSTITUTE EDUCATIONAL THEORY. PROCEDURES FOR RELATING THE THEORY TO DATA WERE OUTLINED, AND A PROJECTION WAS MADE ON HOW THE THEORY COULD BE EMPIRICALLY EVALUATED. (JH)

By

This volume contains four interim reports of the Career Intern Program (CIP) replication portion of the Alternative Education Demonstration operated by Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America and evaluated by the National Institute of Education. (The CIP is an alternative high school serving dropouts and students at a high risk of dropping out. Under the Youth Employment and Demonstration Projects Act, demonstration projects were implemented at four sites to determine if the CIP is replicable at reasonable cost within a reasonable period of time and if the same success achieved at the developmental site can be achieved.) Each report focuses on one of the four parts of the evaluation design. These are (1) assessment of the process of implementation and adaptation of the original CIP model; (2) analysis of the outcomes on enrollees relative to a randomly selected control group, a comparison group, and national norms; (3) determination of the importance of the various functional components of the CIP; and (4) comparisons with other similar youth programs. A summary report on the original CIP experiment is provided as background. (YLB)

27Development Of Multivariate NTCP Models For Radiation-induced Hypothyroidism: A Comparative Analysis.

By

This article is from Radiation Oncology (London, England) , volume 7 . Abstract Background: Hypothyroidism is a frequent late side effect of radiation therapy of the cervical region. Purpose of this work is to develop multivariate normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models for radiation-induced hypothyroidism (RHT) and to compare them with already existing NTCP models for RHT. Methods: Fifty-three patients treated with sequential chemo-radiotherapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) were retrospectively reviewed for RHT events. Clinical information along with thyroid gland dose distribution parameters were collected and their correlation to RHT was analyzed by Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (Rs). Multivariate logistic regression method using resampling methods (bootstrapping) was applied to select model order and parameters for NTCP modeling. Model performance was evaluated through the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Models were tested against external published data on RHT and compared with other published NTCP models. Results: If we express the thyroid volume exceeding X Gy as a percentage (Vx(%)), a two-variable NTCP model including V30(%) and gender resulted to be the optimal predictive model for RHT (Rs = 0.615, p

29NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19990040266: Adaptive-Grid Methods For Phase Field Models Of Microstructure Development

By

In this work the authors show how the phase field model can be solved in a computationally efficient manner that opens a new large-scale simulational window on solidification physics. Our method uses a finite element, adaptive-grid formulation, and exploits the fact that the phase and temperature fields vary significantly only near the interface. We illustrate how our method allows efficient simulation of phase-field models in very large systems, and verify the predictions of solvability theory at intermediate undercooling. We then present new results at low undercoolings that suggest that solvability theory may not give the correct tip speed in that regime. We model solidification using the phase-field model used by Karma and Rappel.

32DTIC ADA082340: Development Of A Pavement Maintenance Management System. Volume VII. Maintenance And Repair Consequence Models And Management Information Requirements.

By

Statistical prediction models for pavement condition index (PCI) and key distresses have been developed for asphalt and jointed concrete pavements. The models were developed based on field data collected during FY76 through FY78 from 19 airfields throughout the United States. The field data included traffic, climate, pavement structure and material properties, and previous maintenance. Prediction models were developed for concrete and asphalt pavements, respectively. These models represent the first iteration of the consequence models needed to help pavement engineers select the most economical maintenance and repair (M&R) strategies and to help management efficiently allocate repair funds. Two workshops were held to determine information required by Air Force Command and Base engineers to efficiently manage airfield pavement M&R. The workshops were attended by many Command and Base engineers, as well as representatives from the Air Force Design Center and the Directorate of Management Systems. Computer and information requirements were defined and implementation alternatives for a computer-aided pavement management system were developed as a result of these workshops. (Author)

34NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19880000935: Development Of Response Models For The Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) Sensors. Part 4: Preliminary Nonscanner Models And Count Conversion Algorithms

By

Two count conversion algorithms and the associated dynamic sensor model for the M/WFOV nonscanner radiometers are defined. The sensor model provides and updates the constants necessary for the conversion algorithms, though the frequency with which these updates were needed was uncertain. This analysis therefore develops mathematical models for the conversion of irradiance at the sensor field of view (FOV) limiter into data counts, derives from this model two algorithms for the conversion of data counts to irradiance at the sensor FOV aperture and develops measurement models which account for a specific target source together with a sensor. The resulting algorithms are of the gain/offset and Kalman filter types. The gain/offset algorithm was chosen since it provided sufficient accuracy using simpler computations.

By

The mission planning processor is a user oriented tool for consumables management and is part of the total consumables subsystem management concept. The approach to be used in developing a working model of the mission planning processor is documented. The approach includes top-down design, structured programming techniques, and application of NASA approved software development standards. This development approach: (1) promotes cost effective software development, (2) enhances the quality and reliability of the working model, (3) encourages the sharing of the working model through a standard approach, and (4) promotes portability of the working model to other computer systems.

38NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19830004034: Development Of Computer Models For The Prediction Of Large Distorted Antenna Characteristics

By

A program for calculating the radiation patterns of analytic reflector antennas, using geometric optics and aperture plane integration techniques, was modified and extended to include nonanalytic surfaces. The original program, while capable of predicting patterns for a variety of reflectors, both smooth and multipanelled, was subject to the restriction that the surface had to be expressed analytically, i.e., described by a set of mathematical equations. This restriction was removed by adapting a technique which allows the reflector configuration to be interpolated from a finite set of points measured on the surface. Criteria for choosing both the number and distribution of these measured surface points were developed by comparing the predicted antenna radiation patterns with measured laboratory results. Test cases involved relatively smooth as well as grossly distorted arbitrary surfaces. Finally, surface point accuracies were established by applying random error analysis to the measurement process.

42DTIC ADA293212: Development Of Inventory Models In Support Of The Hazardous Material Minimization Center Concept At FISC, Puget Sound.

By

This thesis presents an in-depth analysis of the proposed Hazardous Material Minimization Center Concept projected to be prototyped in the Puget Sound, Washington area in an effort to optimize inventory levels. It examines preexisting Hazardous Material operations at NAWS Point Mugu, CA, and five sites in the Puget Sound, WA area in an effort to incorporate the positive qualities into the prototype. The thesis analyzes the suitability of the Hazardous Material Inventory Control System (HICS) to generate sufficient data for inventory optimization and provides an analysis of data generated by the HICS system at the Point Mugu operation. Additionally, it examines components of and potential forecasting methods for demand and lead time and provides an analysis of the variable inventory management costs associated with operating a Hazardous Material Minimization Center including ordering, holding, disposal, backorder and transportation costs. This information is used to develop two mathematical inventory models which can be used to determine reorder points and order quantities to minimize total variable costs for a given level of customer service. The next research step is to conduct a pilot study involving one or two established customers in an effort to begin refinement of these forecasting and inventory modeling techniques. (AN)

43DTIC ADA359251: Development Of Prototype Combined Arms Training Strategies And Battalion Level Training Models (BLTM)

By

The purpose of this report is to document the development of a training model which supports an Armor (M1A1) Battalion's combined arms training strategy. This Battalion Level Training Model (BLTM), with its training and resource allocation strategies, will serve as a prototype for guiding and standardizing the combined arms training strategies (CATS) of nine other battalion types. This report includes a project summary the prototype development methodology, a description of the CATS Matrix, and the Revised Draft Armor BLTM. This project consisted of two thrusts; the first involved the design/development of a methodology or a system of principles, procedures, and practices that could be applied across many different types of battalions to guide and standardize the implementation of CATS; the second thrust called for applying this methodology to implement a Battalion Level Training Model which supports an Armor (M1A1) Battalions combined arms training strategy and serves as the prototype for the development of training strategies for other battalion types.

46DTIC ADA244179: A Comparative Study Of The Reliability Of Function Point Analysis In Software Development Effort Estimation Models

By

The Air Force of the 1990's is steadily growing more reliant on software systems. However, the struggle to develop reliable cost and effort estimation tools continues. The Standard Systems Center (SSC), Gunter AFB AL, has adopted the use of Function Point Analysis to improve estimation of data processing, management and communication systems. Function point analysis was introduced by IBM's Alan Albrecht in 1979 as an alternative to source line of code (SLOC) as a size and productivity measure. In 1991, Tecelote Research, Inc. , under contract to the SSC, delivered the Software Program Acquisition Network Simulation (SPANS) model incorporating the capability to perform estimates using function point measures. This research examines the ability of SPANS to reliably and accurately estimate software project effort with function points. A further investigation compares the predictions derived by SPANS with two other software estimation tools, Checkpoint and Costar.

By

An automated process for forming measurement models and structural equation models was developed using an experimental version of TETRAD 11. An evaluation function was developed to select the measurement models and the structural models for further consideration. Comparisons were made between developing the models in this way and using factor analysis to develop measurement models. We found TETRAD 11 useful in building sets of measurement models and in suggesting sets of possible structural models. A previously unstudied dataset with a sample size of 7625 was used for testing the process. We developed measurement i-models and structural equation models which satisfied our intuitive understanding and had a Chi-square goodness-of-fit p-value of 0. 77.

48DTIC ADA376026: Global Two-Scalar Velocimetry And Development Of Low-Order Models For Use In Optical-Phase Correction In A Plane Mixing Layer

By

Work was conducted on two projects related to control of shear flows. In the first, two-dimensional simulations were performed to study the effects of resolution on the extraction of velocity data from measurements of scalar fields in incompressible flows. That work demonstrates proof-of concept for the methodology described in earlier work supported by AFOSR. In the second, we developed a general-purpose algorithm for computing all solutions of an arbitrary system of multivariate polynomial equations. That work constitutes the basis of a technique for determining the coefficients in low-order models of scalar transport in turbulent shear flows. The polynomial root-finder has been applied to con construction of low-order models of scalar transport in a turbulent plane mixing layer.

49ERIC ED448761: Development Of Conceptual Models For Internet Search: A Case Study.

By

This paper describes the creation and evaluation of a World Wide Web-based courseware module, using conceptual models based on constructivism, that teaches novices how to use the Internet for searching. Questionnaires and interviews were used to understand the difficulties of a group of novices. The conceptual model of the experts for the task was derived using Applied Cognitive Task Analysis (ACTA) and analogy developed to assist novices in understanding the expert cognitive model. The Web courseware module was evaluated using a second novice population. The outcome demonstrated that using conceptual models in learning could help novices to acquire an understanding of the search mechanism and so enable them to learn better. (Contains 11 references.)
