225. Hum MEASURING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE OF SCHOOL CHILDREN – A PILOT

By

The aim of this current pilot study is to develop a self-report measure of emotional intelligence specifically for school children aged between 14 to 17 years of age. For this purpose, a list of 50 items including items from tested questionnaire relating to emotional intelligence was framed. Exploratory factor analysis was used to extract 5 factors of emotional intelligence based on Daniel Goleman model. The sample respondents were 248 Government school children with age ranging between 14 to 17 years of age. A total of 140 ninth grade and 108 eleventh grade children with equal number of boys and girls i.e., 124 participated in the current study. The items were further validated using face, content, and construct, concurrent and convergent validity. Cronbach’s alpha scale was used to find the reliability of the emotional intelligence self report measure.

3ERIC ED426087: Measuring Emotional Intelligence: Where We Are Today.

By

Emotional intelligence has been defined as "the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions" (P. Salovey and J. Mayer, 1990). As a subset of social intelligence and of personal intelligences (H. Gardner, 1983), emotional intelligence involves a mental aptitude that assists in the cognitive processing of affect (J. Mayer and P. Salovey, 1993). Three studies are used to illustrate the concept of emotional intelligence and how it has been measured so far. These are: (1) a study of the ability to recognize the emotional content of visual stimuli conducted by J. Mayer, M. DiPaolo, and P. Salovey (1990) with 139 undergraduates; (2) a study of a measure of individual differences in the ability to attend to, clarify, and manage emotions by P. Salovey and others (1995) involving 86 subjects; and (3) a study of the accurate identification of emotion by J. Mayer and G. Geher (1996) with 40 participants. Implications for the impact of emotional intelligence on achievement, emotional well-being, and culture are discussed. (Contains 41 references.) (SLD)

5MEASURING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, PERSONALITY TRAITS AND OCCUPATIONAL ASPIRATION OF INSTITUTIONALIZED ADOLESCENT ORPHANS USING ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE(ANOVA)

By

The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between the levels of emotional intelligence (measured by emotional intelligence inventory, Dr. S.K Mangal), personality traits (measured by personality inventory, Dr. H.J Eyesenck)and occupational aspiration (measured by occupational aspiration scale, Dr. J.S Grewal) of a random sample of a 250 institutionalized adolescent orphans from kerala. A detailed study was conducted based on their gender and locale. A quantitative survey was used for the study. Analysis of variance indicated that emotional intelligence was related to personality traits of institutionalized adolescent orphans. The implications of the study contribute new knowledge to the field of educational psychology and may be used to facilitate proactive occupational aspiration among institutionalized adolescent orphans.
