The U.S. Navy's procedures for repairing and overhauling Naval vessels in private shipyards in presented as an overview. Particular attention is given to the problems the Navy has experienced in controlling overhaul schedules and costs, and in distinguishing between growth changes and new work changes in overhaul contracts. Recommendations include procedures for standardizing definitions for growth and new work among Navy activities, simplifying current overhaul reporting procedures, and upgrading the quality of personnel assigned to overhaul contract administration functions.(Author)

In February, Dr Peter Victor gave the 2021 Gideon Rosenbluth Memorial Lecture.  Peter Victor is a Professor Emeritus at York University and was Gideon Rosenbluth's graduate student at UBC in the late sixties. More than 30 years later, they co-authored a research paper called Saving the Environment: How Canada Can Abolish Poverty and Unemployment Even in a No-Growth Economy. A couple of years later, based on their work together, Peter wrote his book, Managing without Growth. Slower by Design, not Disaster.

Scaling-up an organization is always a challenging undertaking, and often causes a lot of growing pains. Ubisoft Blue Byte has grown in the last five years, from about 30 employees to almost 300 as of today, and it continues to get bigger. This talk covers the growth strategy, findings, mistakes, and pitfalls we have encountered. We will explain how we implemented the growth to ensure that we have a scalable organization. We will explain the processes that needed to be changed, and the way that growth affected our company culture, by moving from a family-like work atmosphere to a more corporate environment.

Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRi) are widely used in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and other malignancies. However, EGFRi-induced paronychia and pyogenic granuloma–like lesion (PGL) significantly impair patients’ quality of life. Various treatment modalities have been explored, including topical beta-blockers, which have shown promise as a non-invasive therapy. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy of topical beta-blockers for EGFR-TKI-induced paronychia and PGL, focusing on overall response and complete response rates.

The goal of this study is to determine if a set of heuristics can be used as a decision-making tool to effectively determine what low-scope growth-work needs to be targeted for execution early in the construction cycle of a new naval ship. This study analyzes growth-work that is not incorporated into the base contract with a formal engineering change proposal, but rather a less-formal waterfront change process where the logistics and engineering products are updated after the delivery of the ship. This study shows why some growth-work is significantly more expensive or disruptive to the crew if completed after delivery of the ship. Growth-work is realized during the long construction cycle due to technology changes, lessons learned from previous hulls, fleet requirement changes, and contract requirement gaps. Since not all of the growth-work can be incorporated during the period of performance of the base contract, this study lays out a heuristics-based systems approach to managing low-scope growth-work in new construction shipbuilding. This study shows which heuristics are effective to target growth-work that will drive cost and crew disruption if executed after the delivery of the ship. Finally, this study models this approach using cam DEFinition for Function Modeling (IDEF0) diagrams. These models provide a framework for use by other program offices.
