MLOps community meetup #49! Last Wednesday we talked to Lak Lakshmanan, Data Analytics and AI Solutions, Google Cloud. // Abstract: Design patterns are formalized best practices to solve common problems when designing a software system. As machine learning moves from being a research discipline to a software one, it is useful to catalogue tried-and-proven methods to help engineers tackle frequently occurring problems that crop up during the ML process. In this talk, I will cover five patterns (Workflow Pipelines, Transform, Multimodal Input, Feature Store, Cascade) that are useful in the context of adding flexibility, resilience and reproducibility to ML in production. For data scientists and ML engineers, these patterns provide a way to apply hard-won knowledge from hundreds of ML experts to your own projects. Anyone designing infrastructure for machine learning will have to be able to provide easy ways for the data engineers, data scientists, and ML engineers to implement these, and other, design patterns. // Bio: Lak is the Director for Data Analytics and AI Solutions on Google Cloud. We give for Machine Learning (ML)-based aeronautical products, a first rigorous characterization of Operational Design Domains (ODDs). Unlike in other application sectors (such as self-driving road vehicles) where ODD development is scenario-based, our approach is data-centric: we propose the dimensions along which the parameters that define an ODD can be explicitly captured, using a top-down approach starting from system specifications, and a bottom-up approach starting from detailed ML Model (MLM) designs. Then we give a categorization of the data that ML-based applications can encounter in operation, identifying their system-level relevance and impact. Specifically, we discuss how those data categories are useful to determine: (1) the requirements necessary to drive the design of MLMs; (2) the potential effects on the MLM and higher levels of the system hierarchy; (3) the learning assurance processes that may be needed, and (4) system architectural considerations. We illustrate the underlying concepts with an example of an aircraft flight envelope. The approach in this paper is one of the cornerstones of a future process guidance for development and certification/approval of safety-related aeronautical products implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI), currently being developed through aviation industry-based consensus, jointly by the SAE G-34 Committee for AI in aviation, and EUROCAE WG-114 for AI.

In this work, we study how to design uplink transmission with massive machine type devices in tactile internet, where ultra-short delay and ultra-high reliability are required. To characterize the transmission reliability constraint, we employ a two-state transmission model based on the achievable rate with finite blocklength channel codes. If the channel gain exceeds a threshold, a short packet can be transmitted with a small error probability; otherwise there is a packet loss. To exploit frequency diversity, we assign multiple subchannels to each active device, from which the device selects a subchannel with channel gain exceeding the threshold for transmission. To show the total bandwidth required to ensure the reliability, we optimize the number of subchannels and bandwidth of each subchannel and the threshold for each device to minimize the total bandwidth of the system with a given number of antennas at the base station. Numerical results show that with 1000 devices in one cell, the required bandwidth of the optimized policy is acceptable even for prevalent cellular systems. Furthermore, we show that by increasing antennas at the BS, frequency diversity becomes unnecessary, and the required bandwidth is reduced.

Coactive Design is a process that addresses the increasingly complex roles that humans and robots play in modern digitalized systems. It analyzes the interdependencies between members in human-robot teamwork and optimizes interactive collaboration to support the team's overall capabilities. The process endeavors to provide designers and industry players with the necessary analysis tools and techniques to move the industry away from robot-centric automation in which the traditional goal has been for robots to perform required tasks independently from the team. The two outcomes of this thesis are (1) the proposal of an integrated Coactive Systems Engineering Design (COSEED) framework to guide the development of more effective human-machine teaming (HMT) systems and (2) a development exercise for an HMT system to demonstrate the potential gains from the incorporation of the Coactive Design approach into the well-established systems engineering process in the field of inland search and rescue. These result in new findings in how both systems engineering and Coactive Design could be adapted to better complement each other.

A near miss underwater explosion can significantly damage improperly shock hardened combat systems equipment and render the ship unable to 'fight hurt'. MIL-S-901D currently requires shock qualifying mediumweight equipment to a 'generic' shock excitation on the Navy's Mediumweight Shock Machine (MWSM). This shock excitation is severe, but not always characteristic of the actual ship structure response to an underwater explosion. This study proposes a design modification which will allow using a multi-DOF equipment mounting fixture on the MWSM which can be 'tuned' to simulate shipboard shock characteristics based on modal testing and previous ship shock trial data. Equipment qualified in this manner could be highly relied on to survive in battle.

This thesis describes the software design and implementation of a microprocessor- based, random load drive and data acquisition system on a Material Testing System (MTS) machine. A microprocessor, combination analog input/output module, magnetic cassette tape recorder, and strain gage network form a strain data acquisition system for recording sequential strain peaks and troughs on specimens subjected to flight load histories. The data will be used to estimate the fraction of the fatigue life expended in a test specimen. A high speed digital computer is linked by telephone line to a microcomputer development system to create the randomization of fatigue loads specified in Mil Spec 8866 Spectrum A for use by the MTS machine.

As automation and advanced technologies are introduced into transport systems ranging from the Next Generation Air Transportation System termed NextGen, to the advanced surface transportation systems as exemplified by the Intelligent Transportations Systems, to future systems designed for space exploration, there is an increased need to validly predict how the future systems will be vulnerable to error given the demands imposed by the assistive technologies. One formalized approach to study the impact of assistive technologies on the human operator in a safe and non-obtrusive manner is through the use of human performance models (HPMs). HPMs play an integral role when complex human-system designs are proposed, developed, and tested. One HPM tool termed the Man-machine Integration Design and Analysis System (MIDAS) is a NASA Ames Research Center HPM software tool that has been applied to predict human-system performance in various domains since 1986. MIDAS is a dynamic, integrated HPM and simulation environment that facilitates the design, visualization, and computational evaluation of complex man-machine system concepts in simulated operational environments. The paper will discuss a range of aviation specific applications including an approach used to model human error for NASA s Aviation Safety Program, and what-if analyses to evaluate flight deck technologies for NextGen operations. This chapter will culminate by raising two challenges for the field of predictive HPMs for complex human-system designs that evaluate assistive technologies: that of (1) model transparency and (2) model validation.

The lifting machine will assist in lifting cargo off of landers sent to the Moon and in the construction of a lunar base. Three possible designs were considered for the overall configuration of the lifting machine: the variable angle crane, the tower crane, and the gantry crane. Alternate designs were developed for the major components of the lifting machine. A teleoperable, variable angle crane was chosen as its final design. The design consists of a telescoping boom mounted to a chassis that is supported by two conical wheels for towing and four outriggers for stability. Attached to the end of the boom is a seven degree of freedom robot arm for light, dexterous, lifting operations. A cable and hook suspends from the end of the boom for heavy, gross, lifting operations. Approximate structural sizes were determined for the lifter and its components. However, further analysis is needed to determine the optimum design dimensions. The design team also constructed a model of the design which demonstrates its features and operating principals.

Early in his life Samuel Butler began to carry a note-book and to write down in it anything he wanted to remember; it might be something he heard some one say, more commonly it was something he said himself. In one of these notes he gives a reason for making them:<br></br>“One’s thoughts fly so fast that one must shoot them; it is no use trying to put salt on their tails.”<br></br>So he bagged as many as he could hit and preserved them, re-written on loose sheets of paper which constituted a sort of museum stored with the wise, beautiful, and strange creatures that were continually winging their way across the field of his vision. As he became a more expert marksman his collection increased and his museum grew so crowded that he wanted a catalogue. In 1874 he started an index, and this led to his reconsidering the notes, destroying those that he remembered having used in his published books and re-writing the remainder. The re-writing shortened some but it lengthened others and suggested so many new ones that the index was soon of little use and there seemed to be no finality about it. In 1891 he attached the problem afresh and made it a rule to spend an hour every morning re-editing his notes and keeping his index up to date. At his death, in 1902, he left five bound volumes, with the contents dated and indexed, about 225 pages of closely written sermon paper to each volume, and more than enough unbound and unindexed sheets to made a sixth volume of equal size. - Summary by Henry Festing Jones

Rufus Matthew Jones (January 25, 1863 – June 16, 1948) was an American religious leader, writer, magazine editor, philosopher, and college professor. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Haverford Emergency Unit (a precursor to the American Friends Service Committee). One of the most influential Quakers of the 20th century, he was a Quaker historian and theologian as well as a philosopher. In 1917 he helped found the American Friends Service Committee. This book is an attempt to correct and develop the theory proposed tentatively in the little work Malaria. Put briefly, this theory is as follows. In the struggle for existence man has competed, not only with his fellow-men, but also with wild animals and disease- parasites. The fight against beasts was decided long before the historic period, but parasites have always been, and still are, formidable opponents. Whole tribes have been wiped out by plague, kala-azar and measles; and even when the disease-parasite does not win such a decisive victory, it often weakens a nation so much that the latter falls an easy victim to its healthier neighbours. This volume will show how malaria played a part in the decline of the ancient Greeks, along with statistics presented from the Greek Anti Malarial League, and evaluation of malarial literature.
