Educational programs at the John C. Stennis Space Center Visitors Center reach more than 30,000 students in grades K-8 each year. Pictured above, a Stennis tour guide conducts a Living and Working in Space program for children at a local mall. This program, and others designed for specific age levels, is offered throughout the school year and summer for visiting students and youth groups.

With the arrival of a Soyuz capsule, the number of residents on the International Space Station jumps from three to six. A profile of the cosmonauts and astronauts wholl make up the final crew complement of Expedition 23.

Experiments conducted on the Skylab vehicle that will measure and evaluate the ability of the crew to live and work effectively in space are discussed. The methods and techniques of human engineering as they relate to the design and evaluation of work spaces, requirements, and tools are described. The application of these methods and the Skylab measurements to the design of future spacecraft are analyzed.

Closed door policies in dementia special care units are being contested where they limit individual freedom and mobility of residents. Questioning the use of such policies relates to the growing interest in involuntary care and the rights of older persons in long-term care and highlights moral questions regarding the balance between freedom and safety (Graham, 2021; Hamers et al., 2016; Schulmann et al., 2018). Understanding the legal position of people in long-term care has highlighted the morality of using interventions, such as physical restraints and restrictive practices, in countries such as Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands(Estévez-Guerra et al., 2017; Ferrao et al., 2021; Frederiks, 2020; Frederiks et al., 2017; Hofmann et al., 2015; Scheepmans et al., 2018). Additionally, countries such as Canada, England, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway continue to explore policy that restricts the right to self-determination in the care of older people, including the ethics of using closed-door policies and surveillance technologies(Dixon et al., 2020; Driessen et al., 2017; Landeweer et al., 2021; Lowndes et al., 2021; Niemeijer et al., 2015; Piirainen et al., 2021; Tufford et al., 2018). Further, it is essential to consider the principles of human rights (respect, freedom, dignity and equality) of people with dementia to live meaningful lives in environments that meet their individual needs (Charras et al., 2016). Unfortunately, this is not a common practice where dementia environments rarely reflect the diversity and equity of the patient population. For instance, dementia (e.g., Alzheimer's disease) disproportionately affects women more than men in both prevalence and severity (Carter et al., 2012).. However, nursing home environments rarely consider sex and gender in the design and operations. Further, there is minimal knowledge on gender-specific measures used to prevent people with dementia from exiting a nursing home environment. Therefore, this scoping review aims to provide an overview of the characteristics, ethics and gender considerations of using measures to prevent people with dementia from leaving a nursing home environment.

This webinar was part of the City of Winnipeg’s Awareness & Action Speaker Series on October 19, 2022. French-speaking 2SLGBTQQIA+ Manitobans find themselves at the intersection of a double minority: they are both a sexual/gender, and Manitoba’s official language minority community. In 2020, the Collectif LGBTQ* du Manitoba initiated a first-of-its-kind in Western Canada research study, in collaboration with Université de Saint-Boniface, to garner a better understanding of those who make up this double minority, namely their sociodemographic profile, their experiences of discrimination and stigmatization, and their needs in terms of healthcare and social services. The resulting report, Living in a Liminal Space: the Experiences of French-Speaking 2SLGBTQQIA+ Manitobans (2021), by Kevin Prada, Danielle de Moissac, Ndeye Rokhaya Gueye, and the Collectif LGBTQ* du Manitoba, presents a first glimpse into the unique needs and experiences of this population, proposing key avenues for consideration both by decision makers and by the general public alike. The main author, Kevin Prada, will provide an overview of this study's key findings, as well as some avenues for discussion for the community of Winnipeg. A reflection on the notion of intersectionality will also be presented. Biography: Kevin Prada is a queer researcher and psychology honours student at the University of Manitoba, whose research focuses on marginalized populations, namely 2SLGBTQQIA+ and official language minority populations in Canada. Through the lens of intersectionality, he is investigating the compounding minority identities that affect each person's unique experiences and needs, to level systemic inequity and favour each person's wellbeing. He intends to pursue graduate studies in clinical psychology, aiming to serve queer youth and other marginalized populations in Winnipeg, in a trauma-informed clinical setting. Currently, his contributions to the literature include a novel analysis of the needs and experiences of discrimination of French-speaking 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples in Manitoba (a first of its kind in Western Canada), research among official language minority communities, and also the mental health and risk-taking behaviours of postsecondary students.

The International Space Station (ISS) incorporates elements designed and developed by an international consortium led by the United States (U.S.), and by Russia. For this cooperative effort to succeed, it is crucial that the designs and methods of design of the other partners are understood sufficiently to ensure compatibility. Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) is one system in which functions are performed independently on the Russian Segment (RS) and on the U.S./international segments. This document describes, in two volumes, the design and operation of the ECLS Systems (ECLSS) on board the ISS. This current volume, Volume 1, is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 is a general overview of the ISS, describing the configuration, general requirements, and distribution of systems as related to the ECLSS, and includes discussion of the design philosophies of the partners and methods of verification of equipment. Chapter 2 describes the U.S. ECLSS and technologies in greater detail. Chapter 3 describes the ECLSS in the European Attached Pressurized Module (APM), Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), and Italian Mini-Pressurized Logistics Module (MPLM). Volume II describes the Russian ECLSS and technologies in greater detail. These documents present thorough, yet concise, descriptions of the ISS ECLSS.

This document is a presentation about some of the challenges of living and working in space. The presentation shows slides of the Apollo 11 liftoff, Skylab in orbit, a Space Shuttle launch, and a slide of the International Space Station. It reviews the needs and effluents of the astronauts per day, and the Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) systems. It shows a flow diagram of the Space Station Regenerative ECLS, which shows the various systems, and how they interact to control the environment and recycle the air, and water. There are other slides some of which show astronauts eating, brushing teeth, shaving, and sipping from a sip bottle while exercising.

Basic knowledge about Skylab experiments is presented in this book for the purpose of informing high school teachers about scientific research performed in orbit and enabling the teachers to broaden their scope of material selection. The seventh volume deals with the ability of the Skylab crew to live and work effectively in space. The content is divided into three sections. The first section is concerned with the methods and techniques of human engineering used to design work spaces, requirements, and tools. The second section is related to performance in a weightless environment, and the third is related to living in space and inflight aerosol analysis. Experiment backgrounds, experimental procedures, scientific objectives, and types of data output are discussed in each section. Student experiments are suggested for their application to classroom activities. Included are a glossary and a selected bibliography. (CC)

SILC is a low cost method of multi-color photometry that is utilized to enhance the Space Object Identification (SOI) capability. Currently, USSPACECOM has two radar systems to conduct deep space object identification, which are located in one area of the globe; this limits USSPACECOM global coverage. USSPACECOM also has three Electro-optic ground based deep space surveillance systems that are strategically located around the world. However, they provide only the gross stability of a satellite. This measurement is of limited value to USSPACECOM. The demonstration of SILC shows that GEODSS could use multi color photometry to identify satellites down to their bus class; this is a tremendous leap for SOI capabilities.

There's no refrigerator on the International Space Station. So, NASA's research efforts develop safe, nutritious and palatable foods that will sustain astronauts during long space missions.

Living and working in space requires human perseverance. Future missions will focus on exploration at greater distances from Earth; to the Moon and then to Mars. These missions will mean humans will stay in space for extended durations. To ensure that these goals are achieved, NASA's astronauts must be able to perform at peak productivity under even the most daunting conditions. Our research and science enables human spaceflight exploration to expand the frontiers of knowledge, capability, and opportunity in space.

Researchers take major steps to understand the potential long-term health effects associated with space. A longer duration in space means increased risk of oxidative damage to astronauts. Oxidative Stress is believed to contribute greatly to bone loss and muscle loss. Increased oxidative damage and inflammation can also accelerate the development of cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s. To insure the safety of our astronauts, NASA scientists study mechanisms and work on countermeasures related to Oxidative Stress in the space environment.

Abstract In invasion processes, both abiotic and biotic factors are considered essential, but the latter are usually disregarded when modeling the potential spread of exotic species. In the framework of set theory, interactions between biotic (B), abiotic (A), and movement-related (M) factors in the geographical space can be hypothesized with BAM diagrams and tested using ecological niche models (ENMs) to estimate A and B areas. The main aim of our survey was to evaluate the interactions between abiotic (climatic) and biotic (host availability) factors in geographical space for exotic symbionts (i.e., non-free-living species), using ENM techniques combined with a BAM framework and using exotic Entocytheridae (Ostracoda) found in Europe as model organisms. We carried out an extensive survey to evaluate the distribution of entocytherids hosted by crayfish in Europe by checking 94 European localities and 12 crayfish species. Both exotic entocytherid species found, Ankylocythere sinuosa and Uncinocythere occidentalis, were widely distributed in W Europe living on the exotic crayfish species Procambarus clarkii and Pacifastacus leniusculus, respectively. No entocytherids were observed in the remaining crayfish species. The suitable area for A. sinuosa was mainly restricted by its own limitations to minimum temperatures in W and N Europe and precipitation seasonality in circum-Mediterranean areas. Uncinocythere occidentalis was mostly restricted by host availability in circum-Mediterranean regions due to limitations of P. leniusculus to higher precipitation seasonality and maximum temperatures. The combination of ENMs with set theory allows studying the invasive biology of symbionts and provides clues about biogeographic barriers due to abiotic or biotic factors limiting the expansion of the symbiont in different regions of the invasive range. The relative importance of abiotic and biotic factors on geographical space can then be assessed and applied in conservation plans. This approach can also be implemented in other systems where the target species is closely interacting with other taxa.

The main aim of our survey was to evaluate the interactions between abiotic (climatic) and biotic (host availability) factors in geographical space for exotic symbionts (i.e., non-free-living species), using ENM techniques combined with a BAM framework and using exotic Entocytheridae (Ostracoda) found in Europe as model organisms. We carried out an extensive survey to evaluate the distribution of entocytherids hosted by crayfish in Europe by checking 94 European localities and 12 crayfish species. Both exotic entocytherid species found, Ankylocythere sinuosa and Uncinocythere occidentalis, were widely distributed in W Europe living on the exotic crayfish species Procambarus clarkii and Pacifastacus leniusculus, respectively. No entocytherids were observed in the remaining crayfish species. The suitable area for A. sinuosa was mainly restricted by its own limitations to minimum temperatures in W and N Europe and precipitation seasonality in circum-Mediterranean areas. Uncinocythere occidentalis was mostly restricted by host availability in circum-Mediterranean regions due to limitations of P. leniusculus to higher precipitation seasonality and maximum temperatures. The combination of ENMs with set theory allows studying the invasive biology of symbionts and provides clues about biogeographic barriers due to abiotic or biotic factors limiting the expansion of the symbiont in different regions of the invasive range. The relative importance of abiotic and biotic factors on geographical space can then be assessed and applied in conservation plans. This approach can also be implemented in other systems where the target species is closely interacting with other taxa.

The history of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Skylab program is provided in this three-part book. Part I (chapters 1 to 5) traces the origins of the Skylab concept from its emergence in the period 1962-65 through its evolution into final form in 1969. Part II (chapters 6 to 13) focuses on the period from 1969-73, considering the development of the spacecraft modules, the experiments they carried, and the preparations to launch and operate them. Chapter 6 focuses on the program leaders, the problems they faced, and the tools they used to manage Skylab. Chapters 7 through 11 deal with the major experimental programs and the spacecraft components. Houston's preparations for directing the missions and the launching of Skylab are treated in chapters 12 and 13 respectively. Part III (chapters 14 to 19) deals with the Skylab launch accident (the meteoroid shield ripped away, leaving the workshop exposed to solar heat and disabling its solar panels), Skylab missions, program results (including medical and solar/earth observation findings), and the end of Skylab.
