16$\textit{Ab Initio}$ Study Of Phosphorus Anodes For Lithium And Sodium-ion Batteries

Phosphorus has received recent attention in the context of high-capacity and high-rate anodes for lithium and sodium-ion batteries. Here, we present a first principles structure prediction study combined with NMR calculations which gives us insights into its lithiation/sodiation process. We report a variety of new phases phases found by AIRSS and the atomic species swapping methods. Of particular interest, a stable Na$_5$P$_4$-C2/m structure and locally stable structures found less than 10 meV/f.u. from the convex hull, such as Li$_4$P$_3$-P2$_1$2$_1$2$_1$, NaP$_5$-Pnma and Na$_4$P$_3$-Cmcm. The mechanical stability of Na$_5$P$_4$-C2/m and Li$_4$P$_3$-P2$_1$2$_1$2$_1$ has been studied by first principles phonon calculations . We have calculated average voltages which suggests that black phosphorus (BP) can be considered as a safe anode in lithium-ion batteries due to its high lithium insertion voltage, 1.5 V; moreover, BP exhibits a relatively low theoretical volume expansion compared with other intercalation anodes, 216\% ($\Delta V/V$). We identify that specific ranges in the calculated shielding can be associated with specific ionic arrangements, results which play an important role in the interpretation of NMR spectroscopy experiments. Since the lithium-phosphides are found to be insulating even at high lithium concentrations we show that Li-P-doped phases with aluminium have electronic states at the Fermi level suggesting that using aluminium as a dopant can improve the electrochemical performance of P anodes.

This article is from Scientific Reports , volume 3 . Abstract In this report, a novel hierarchical peapoded array with Co3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated in graphitized carbon fiber is introduced for the first time. The unique peapoded structure is suitable for the excellent anode in LIBs and demonstrates enhanced rate capability, cyclability and prolonged lifespan, e.g. the specific capacity can reach up to 1150 mAh/g. All the enhanced electrochemical performance is reasonably derived from the peapod-like and aligned conformation. Furthermore, due to the specialty of the structure and the versatility of Co3O4, the composite will find more applications in specific catalysis, biomedicine, electronics, optoelectronic engineering and gas sensing. The fabrication strategy developed here is also a rational and universal approach towards peapod-like architecture and has significantly widened the specific functional material domain we created before. In our design, more peapod-like aligned samples with various nanoparticles, e.g. oxides, phosphides, even nitrides, encapsulated in graphitized carbon fibers, have been lifted on the research agenda and the results will be presented soon.

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Objective: Lithium users are offered routine renal monitoring but few studies have quantified the risk to renal health. The aim of this study was to assess the association between use of lithium carbonate and incidence of renal failure in patients with bipolar disorder. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study using the General Practice Research Database (GPRD) and a nested validation study of lithium exposure and renal failure. A cohort of 6360 participants aged over 18 years had a first recorded diagnosis of bipolar disorder between January 1, 1990 and December 31, 2007. Data were examined from electronic primary care records from 418 general practices across the UK. The primary outcome was the hazard ratio for renal failure in participants exposed to lithium carbonate as compared with non-users of lithium, adjusting for age, gender, co-morbidities, and poly-pharmacy. Results: Ever use of lithium was associated with a hazard ratio for renal failure of 2.5 (95% confidence interval 1.6 to 4.0) adjusted for known renal risk factors. Absolute risk was age dependent, with patients of 50 years or older at particular risk of renal failure: Number Needed to Harm (NNH) was 44 (21 to 150). Conclusions: Lithium is associated with an increased risk of renal failure, particularly among the older age group. The absolute risk of renal failure associated with lithium use remains small.

This article is from Scientific Reports , volume 3 . Abstract Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are going to play more important roles in electric vehicles and smart grids. The safety of the current LIBs of large capacity has been remaining a challenge due to the existence of large amounts of organic liquid electrolytes. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) have been tried to replace the organic electrolyte to improve their safety. However, the application of GPEs is handicapped by their poor mechanical strength and high cost. Here, we report an economic gel-type composite membrane with high safety and good mechanical strength based on glass fiber mats, which are separator for lead-acid batteries. The gelled membrane exhibits high ionic conductivity (1.13 mS cm−1), high Li+ ion transference number (0.56) and wide electrochemical window. Its electrochemical performance is evaluated by LiFePO4 cathode with good cycling. The results show this gel-type composite membrane has great attraction to the large-capacity LIBs requiring high safety with low cost.

21A Novel Lithium/sulfur Battery Based On Sulfur/graphene Nanosheet Composite Cathode And Gel Polymer Electrolyte.

This article is from Nanoscale Research Letters , volume 9 . Abstract A novel sulfur/graphene nanosheet (S/GNS) composite was prepared via a simple ball milling of sulfur with commercial multi-layer graphene nanosheet, followed by a heat treatment. High-resolution transmission and scanning electronic microscopy observations showed the formation of irregularly interlaced nanosheet-like structure consisting of graphene with uniform sulfur coating on its surface. The electrochemical properties of the resulting composite cathode were investigated in a lithium cell with a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) prepared by trapping 1 mol dm−3 solution of lithium bistrifluoromethanesulfonamide in tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether in a polymer matrix composed of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)/poly(methylmethacrylate)/silicon dioxide (PVDF-HFP/PMMA/SiO2). The GPE battery delivered reversible discharge capacities of 809 and 413 mAh g−1 at the 1st and 50th cycles at 0.2C, respectively, along with a high coulombic efficiency over 50 cycles. This performance enhancement of the cell was attributed to the suppression of the polysulfide shuttle effect by a collective effect of S/GNS composite cathode and GPE, providing a higher sulfur utilization.

This article is from Scientific Reports , volume 3 . Abstract Enhancing ion and electron transport kinetics together with improving cycle life are important issues to be considered when developing high-performance Li ion batteries. Here we demonstrate a three dimensional ordered macroporous conductive electrode concept by entrapping electrode active nanoparticles in an interpenetrating macroporous carbon inverse opal. The electrodes are featured with simultaneously enhanced ion and electron transport kinetics as well as geometrically constrained active nanoparticles. The electrode can deliver up to 94.17% of theoretical capacity over 1000 discharge/charge cycles at a current density of 2.0 A g−1, and exhibits good rate capability in the high current density range of 1.0–10.0 A g−1. We hope that our findings will help pave the way for tailored design of many other sophisticated electrode materials in electrochemistry.

Abstract Lithium, a drug that has long been used to treat bipolar disorder and some other human pathogenesis, has recently been shown to stimulate neural precursor growth. However, the involved mechanism is not clear. Here, we show that lithium induces proliferation but not survival of neural precursor cells. Mechanistic studies suggest that the effect of lithium mainly involved activation of the transcription factor NF-AT and specific induction of a subset of proliferation-related genes. While NF-AT inactivation by specific inhibition of its upstream activator calcineurin antagonized the effect of lithium on the proliferation of neural precursor cells, specific inhibition of the NF-AT inhibitor GSK-3β, similar to lithium treatment, promoted neural precursor cell proliferation. One important function of lithium appeared to increase inhibitory phosphorylation of GSK-3β, leading to GSK-3β suppression and subsequent NF-AT activation. Moreover, lithium-induced proliferation of neural precursor cells was independent of its role in inositol depletion. These findings not only provide mechanistic insights into the clinical effects of lithium, but also suggest an alternative therapeutic strategy for bipolar disorder and other neural diseases by targeting the non-canonical GSK-3β-NF-AT signaling.

Abstract The performance of nanocomposite electrodes prepared by controlled ball-milling of TiS2 and a Li2S–P2S5 solid electrolyte (SE) for all-solid-state lithium batteries is investigated, focusing on the evolution of the microstructure. Compared to the manually mixed electrodes, the ball-milled electrodes exhibit abnormally increased first-charge capacities of 416 mA h g−1 and 837 mA h g−1 in the voltage ranges 1.5–3.0 V and 1.0–3.0 V, respectively, at 50 mA g−1 and 30°C. The ball-milled electrodes also show excellent capacity retention of 95% in the 1.5–3.0 V range after 60 cycles as compared to the manually mixed electrodes. More importantly, a variety of characterization techniques show that the origin of the extra Li+ storage is associated with an amorphous Li–Ti–P–S phase formed during the controlled ball-milling process.

The Li/SOCl2 inorganic electrolyte system is the highest energy density system known to date. It consists of a Li anode, a carbon cathode and SOCl2 which acts both as a solvent and as a cathode active material. The electrolyte salt that has been used most extensively is LiAlCl4, but salts such as Li2B10Cl10 and Li2O(AlCl3)2 have also been used successfully in this system for improving the shelf life characteristics. The main objective of this program is to develop high rate Li/SOCl2 cells and batteries for portable applications of the U.S. Army. The cells and batteries must deliver high energy densities than are presently available and must be safe to handle under U.S. Army field conditions.

Effort is continuing on the MM and T program to establish the fabrication techniques and requirements necessary to meet hardware production levels as specified in the subject contract. The PERT/TIME Network has been revised and expanded to define specific problem areas and establish a corrective action plan to meet the overall program objectives within the scheduled time frame. Hermetic cell and battery components design has been revised in an effort to meet and/or exceed all performance specifications at minimum current density levels. Non-hermetic cell samples are presently being fabricated and tested under various thermal discharge profiles to simulate the proposed hermetic designs. Such results will aid in the final selection of the optimal design configuration for the hermetic prototypes. Initial equipment design and fabrication of core winding, cathode/anode manufacture, hermetic closure and electrolyte preparation and dispensing is presently underway to permit subsequent integration within an operational production line. Interface with automated equipment manufacturers continue in order to fabricate specific machine elements and procure necessary hardware within the time frame of the PERT/TIME Network. (Author)

Dark blue microcrystalline powders produced from lithium metal and the cation complexing agent cryptand 2.1.1 (C211) were prepared from ammonia and from methylamine solutions. The mole ratio of lithium to cryptand, R, was varied from 0.60 to 2.0 but there was no evidence for Li(-). The optical and magnetic properties indicate that Li(+)C211.e(-) is an electride, a member of the class of materials in which the anions are electrons. Samples were studied by optical transmission spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and microwave and D.C. conductivities. In many cases several methods were used to characterize samples prepared from the same solution; correlation among the various properties is high.

The anodic and cathodic behavior of molybdenum trioxide electrodes in various states of lithiation was investigated in 1M LiClO4-PC electrolytes at room temperature. A comparison was made between the anodic and cathodic rate capabilities of the electrodes. From cycling experiments at various depths of discharge, cycle life data were obtained. Problems observed after deep discharges are discussed. (Author)

The lithium-water cell was characterized during the present study and marked improvements made in lithium utilization efficiency by the selection of electrolyte and in the cell potential by the use of catalyzed cathodes. Cell studies show that a spaced electrode cell can be operated with lithium hydroxide concentrations of 2.5- to 3.5-M in the electrolyte at 10 to 30C at current densities to 1.5A/sq. in. About double this power density is expected with optimized cell construction. Selected electrolytes may be used that allow 50 to 80% lithium-utilization efficiency at potentials of over 1 V at temperatures to 30 degrees C. Catalyzed cathodes have reduced polarization and their use will increase by 10 to 25% the power capability of the system.

Soldiers currently have 68 h worth of batteries to power all of their personal communication devices, which is currently limiting the mission operational time. To improve the mission time, current technology could be replaced with lithium (Li)-air batteries, which have higher energy densities and a porous cathode. Li-air battery performance is limited by the electrolytic membrane, which needs high Li-ionic conductivity. Lithium lanthanum titanate (Li3xLa(2/3)-xTiO3, or LLTO) is a promising electrolytic membrane material due to its high lattice conductivity; however, the total conductivity of LLTO is lowered by its grain boundaries. We aim to increase the grain boundary conductivity by introducing an intergranular film (IGF) through novel processing techniques such as room temperature ion exchange and magnetron sputtering on a fluidized powder bed. After incorporation of the IGF, the grain boundary conductivity increased by up to 60% while maintaining crystal structure, microstructure, and density of the sintered pellets. The results of this study indicate that if the best-performing materials from this report are incorporated into a battery and all of the Soldiers batteries were replaced, the Soldier would be able to stay on-task in a mission for approximately 340 h without replacing batteries.

LiF thermo luminescent dosimeters (TLDs) are used by the United States Navy to record radiation exposure of personnel. The DT -648 has been used for many years and has undergone extensive testing to identify its pre-irradiation and post-irradiation fade operating characteristics. Studies have shown that the addition of copper increases the thermoluminesence sensitivity of the TLD for improved low-level radiation monitoring, which prompted the introduction of theDT-702lPD LiF: MCP TLD as a replacement for the DT -648/PD LiF: MT TLD.[4]Using current equipment for processing of TLDs and calibrating to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards, this study evaluated the various neutron fading characteristics of the copper-doped dosimeter. The 34week study took place at the Naval Dosimetry Center (NDC), Bethesda, Maryland. The TLDs were stored for pre-specified lengths of time according to a34 week schedule to account for realistic fading effects. The TLDs were irradiated to a Plutonium-Beryllium radiation source before and after storing the TLDs.

The slow pyrolysis of lithium aluminum hydride proceeds by a successive dehydrogenation of the fuel in three stages over a temperature range between 210 degrees and 460 degrees C. The combustion of lithium aluminum hydride follows a simular multistage process in which the pyrolytic dehydrogenation is followed by an afterburning of the metal substrate. Experimental studies were performed to determine the delay times between successive stages for solid mixtures of lithium aluminum hydride with selected oxidizers. Time resolved spectrographic techniques were used to determine the duration of these stages. Studies were performed using Li2O2 and NH4NO3 oxidizers over a particle size range between 75-300 microns and O/F mixture ratios of between 0.5 and 3.0. Ignition delay times for the initial reaction were found to vary between 5 and 40 milliseconds for the first stage and 10 to 120 milliseconds for the second stages. An analytical model was developed to describe the observed multistage combustion process. The model and resulting PARTIG computer program utilize the nodal approach with stepwise solution of the equations for heat and mass transfer.

Investigation of the high rate discharge performance of Ni3S2 indicated that rate capability was strongly influenced by the viscosity of the cell electrolyte. Stable discharges at up to 6 mA sq. cm. (equivalent to the 5-hr rate for an electrode of typical thickness) were obtained from Teflon-bonded electrodes in a tetrahydrofuran/LiClO4 electrolyte. Coulombic efficiencies on the order of 50% of theoretical could be obtained at 3 mA sq. cm. Previous results with propylene carbonate and butyrolactone solutions indicated rate limitations in the vicinity of 0.5 to 1 mA sq. cm. Study of the Ni3S1 oxidation procedure indicated that the optimum temperature for the production of the high voltage material was 325C. X-ray diffraction analysis of the oxidized Ni3S2 indicated the presence of the relatively sulfur rich nickel sulfides: Ni7S6 and NiS1.09. These materials possess higher theoretical energy densities than Ni3S2. This advantage is compromised by the difficulty of obtaining high coulombic efficiencies from insulating materials. Oxidation of Ni3S2 at temperatures above 400 C results in the formation of NiO. A brief study of the discharge properties of metallic oxides, carbonates, and cyanides in propylene carbonate/LiClO4 electrolyte indicated that although several of these materials exhibited acceptable discharge and voltage efficiencies, none were of sufficient interest to justify further development. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the shear bond strength of resin buttons to lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD) and leucite reinforced feldspathic restorations (Empress CAD) after different surface preparation techniques. Methods and Materials: Group A,B,C,D, and E are divided by the surface treatments that were applied. IPS e.max CAD crowns were fired in porcelain oven according to manufacturer recommendations. One sample of each group was photographed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

During Fiscal Year 1975 the Naval Undersea Center (NUC) performed an extensive test programs with low-rate and high-rate lithium-thionyl chloride cells. This program has aided in identifying capabilities and deficiencies with the present technology. Many deficiencies were readily corrected but others are less understood and additional development is required. As a result of this program, improved, low-discharge rate, hermetically sealed cells and batteries are being used in several ocean oriented applications. Future development programs are planned to provide safe, high-discharge rate cells for propulsion and pulse-power applications.
