1A Linear Programming Method For Detecting Negative Circuits With Special Application To The Assignment Problem
By Dennis, Robert Vaughn
A new method for detecting negative cycles in a graph is proposed. This method is based upon the primal-dual relationships of a linear program formulated from an assignment problem type network. A computer program is developed for this new method to include the complete solution of the assignment problem. Results are given on program efficiency.

2DTIC ADA308904: Response Surface Analysis Of Two-Stage Stochastic Linear Programming With Recourse.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This research investigates a special class of stochastic linear programs known as two-stage stochastic linear programming with relatively complete and fixed recourse. These models characterize a two-phase process where the first- stage decision (itself subject to a separate set of first-stage linear constraints) allocates a set of resources to the second-stage linear program prior to the realization of random variables affecting second-stage resource availability. Since the second-stage decision deterministically follows both first-stage allocation and random variable realization, the first-stage variables constitute the only true decision. The expected cost of the two-stage recourse problem is also a piecewise convex function of the first-stage decision variables, thus allowing a global optimal solution that minimizes the total expected cost.

3ERIC ED064331: A Linear Programming Model To Optimize Various Objective Functions Of A Foundation Type State Support Program.
By ERIC
The purpose of this study was to formulate a linear programming model to simulate a foundation type support program and to apply this model to a state support program for the public elementary and secondary school districts in the State of Iowa. The model was successful in producing optimal solutions to five objective functions proposed for testing it, and thus it is concluded that the use of a linear programming model to simulate a foundation type state program is indeed feasible. Tables present the study data, and an appendix provides the algebraic matrix used for the solution to each of the five problems. (Author/DB)

4Linear Programming Relaxations For Goldreich's Generators Over Non-Binary Alphabets
By Ryuhei Mori, Takeshi Koshiba, Osamu Watanabe and Masaki Yamamoto
Goldreich suggested candidates of one-way functions and pseudorandom generators included in $\mathsf{NC}^0$. It is known that randomly generated Goldreich's generator using $(r-1)$-wise independent predicates with $n$ input variables and $m=C n^{r/2}$ output variables is not pseudorandom generator with high probability for sufficiently large constant $C$. Most of the previous works assume that the alphabet is binary and use techniques available only for the binary alphabet. In this paper, we deal with non-binary generalization of Goldreich's generator and derives the tight threshold for linear programming relaxation attack using local marginal polytope for randomly generated Goldreich's generators. We assume that $u(n)\in \omega(1)\cap o(n)$ input variables are known. In that case, we show that when $r\ge 3$, there is an exact threshold $\mu_\mathrm{c}(k,r):=\binom{k}{r}^{-1}\frac{(r-2)^{r-2}}{r(r-1)^{r-1}}$ such that for $m=\mu\frac{n^{r-1}}{u(n)^{r-2}}$, the LP relaxation can determine linearly many input variables of Goldreich's generator if $\mu>\mu_\mathrm{c}(k,r)$, and that the LP relaxation cannot determine $\frac1{r-2} u(n)$ input variables of Goldreich's generator if $\mu

5DTIC ADA421388: Non-Linear Control Allocation Using Piecewise Linear Functions: A Linear Programming Approach
By Defense Technical Information Center
The performance of two different approaches to solving the non-linear control allocation problem is presented. The non-linear control allocation problem is formulated using piecewise linear functions to approximate the control moments produced by a set of control effectors. when the control allocation problem is formulated as a piecewise linear program, an additional set of constraints enter into the problem formation. One approach is to introduce a set of binary variables to enforce these constraints. The result is a mixed- integer linear programming problem that can be solved using any branch-and-bound software. A second approach is to solve the piecewise linear programming problem using a modified simplex method. The simplex algorithm is modified to enforce a subset of the decision variables to enter into the basis only if certain conditions are met. We will show that solving the optimization problem using the simplex based approach is significantly faster than solving the same problem using a mixed-integer formulation. We will then compare the closed-loop performance of a re-entry vehicle using both approaches.

6DTIC ADA162048: An Implementation Of The Projective Algorithm For Linear Programming.
By Defense Technical Information Center
An algorithm to solve linear programming problems is presented in this thesis which is based on Karmarkar's projective method. The algorithm includes a practical method to project a general linear programming problem onto a unit simplex and eliminates the a priori need to know the optimal value of the objective function. The implementation conserves sparsity. The key part of the implementation is the solution of a linear least-squares problem to find an improving direction: a direct and an iterative method are implemented to solve this problem. The direct method employs the minimum-degree heuristic to reorder the system of normal equations, and thus conserve sparsity during the following Cholesky factor of the normal equation matrix as a preconditioner for conjugate gradient iterations which are performed implicity on the preconditioned matrix. The study concludes with implementation remarks, and computational results.

7DTIC ADA1038654: Sparsity-Preserving SOR Algorithms For Separable Quadratic And Linear Programming.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The main purpose of this work is to give explicit sparsity-preserving SOR(Successive Overrelaxation) algorithms for the solution of separable quadratic and linear programming problems. The principal and computationally distinguishing feature of the present SOR algorithms is that they preserve the sparsity structure of the problem and do not require the computation of the product of the constraint matrix by its transpose as is the case in earlier SOR algorithms for linear and quadratic programming. An algorithm is described for determining the optimal solution of parametric linear and quadratic programming problems as an explicit piecewise linear function of the parameter. Each linear function is uniquely determined by an appropriate subset of active constraints. For every critical value of the parameter a new subset has to be determined. A simple rule is given for adding and deleting constraints from this subset. (Author)

16DTIC ADA137506: A Microcomputer Based General Linear Programming Optimization Package.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The importance of mathematical models as tools in decision making has motivated increased interest in that theory and its implementation. This paper describes fundamental techniques of linear programming which have been combined to offer a microcomputer based optimization package. The package is machine portable and will accept input from files created by other programs. Thus the package affords the opportunity to build a mathematical programming system based on its ability to solve bounded variable linear sub-programs. Written in JRT PASCAL 3.0 and implemented on a portable, 8-bit microcomputer (KAYPRO-II), this package places the fundamental tool of optimization in the office, classroom and home. (Author)

17DTIC ADA075575: A Bounding Technique For Integer Linear Programming With Binary Variables.
By Defense Technical Information Center
We present a bounding technique for use in implicit enumeration algorithms for solving the integer linear programming problem with binary variables. The main assumptions used by this technique are the associated linear program, obtained by dropping the integrality constraints on the variables, possesses a unique optimal solution, this optimal solution is not binary, and a good feasible solution to the original problem is available. An alternative to the last assumption which is weaker is also presented. We show that joint bounds can be obtained on the values of a subset of the variables. In addition we given an efficient method to implement this bounding technique. Finally, a class of problems particularly well-suited to this bounding procedure is specified. (Author)

18A Semi-Definite Programming Approach To Stability Analysis Of Linear Partial Differential Equations
By Aditya Gahlawat and Giorgio Valmorbida
We consider the stability analysis of a large class of linear 1-D PDEs with polynomial data. This class of PDEs contains, as examples, parabolic and hyperbolic PDEs, PDEs with boundary feedback and systems of in-domain/boundary coupled PDEs. Our approach is Lyapunov based which allows us to reduce the stability problem to the verification of integral inequalities on the subspaces of Hilbert spaces. Then, using fundamental theorem of calculus and Green's theorem, we construct a polynomial problem to verify the integral inequalities. Constraining the solution of the polynomial problem to belong to the set of sum-of-squares polynomials subject to affine constraints allows us to use semi-definite programming to algorithmically construct Lyapunov certificates of stability for the systems under consideration. We also provide numerical results of the application of the proposed method on different types of PDEs.

24Error Bounds For Repeat-Accumulate Codes Decoded Via Linear Programming
By Idan Goldenberg and David Burshtein
We examine regular and irregular repeat-accumulate (RA) codes with repetition degrees which are all even. For these codes and with a particular choice of an interleaver, we give an upper bound on the decoding error probability of a linear-programming based decoder which is an inverse polynomial in the block length. Our bound is valid for any memoryless, binary-input, output-symmetric (MBIOS) channel. This result generalizes the bound derived by Feldman et al., which was for regular RA(2) codes.

26Non-Linear Programming: Maximize SNR For Designing Spreading Sequence - Part I: SNR Versus Mean-Square Correlation
By Hirofumi Tsuda and Ken Umeno
Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) is an important index for wireless communications. In CDMA systems, spreading sequences are utilized. This series of papers show the method to derive spreading sequences as the solutions of the non-linear programming: maximize SNR. In this paper, we consider a frequency-selective wide-sense-stationary uncorrelated-scattering (WSSUS) channel and evaluate the worst case of SNR. Then, we derive the new expression of SNR whose main term consists of the periodic correlation terms and the aperiodic correlation terms. In general, there is a relation between SNR and mean-square correlations, which are indices for performance of spreading sequences. Then, we show the relation between our expression and them. With this expression, we can maximize SNR with the Lagrange multiplier method. In Part II, with this expression, we construct two types optimization problems and evaluate them.

27DTIC ADA023278: Parametric And Postoptimality Analysis In Integer Linear Programming
By Defense Technical Information Center
Postoptimality analysis and parametric optimization techniques are fully developed aspects of linear programming. In the context of integer linear programming, however, these aspects have barely begun to be developed. The purpose of this paper is to take stock of what is known about this topic and to lay the foundation for future progress. Our conceptual starting point is the notion that, in practical applications, typically one is faced not with a single numerical integer linear program to solve but rather with an entire family of numerical problems of interest. The members of the family may all have the same structure but differ as to the values of one or more coefficients, or they may even have different (but related) structures. The scope of this paper is limited to be first mentioned case.

28Sensor Selection By Linear Programming
By Joseph Wang, Kirill Trapeznikov and Venkatesh Saligrama
We learn sensor trees from training data to minimize sensor acquisition costs during test time. Our system adaptively selects sensors at each stage if necessary to make a confident classification. We pose the problem as empirical risk minimization over the choice of trees and node decision rules. We decompose the problem, which is known to be intractable, into combinatorial (tree structures) and continuous parts (node decision rules) and propose to solve them separately. Using training data we greedily solve for the combinatorial tree structures and for the continuous part, which is a non-convex multilinear objective function, we derive convex surrogate loss functions that are piecewise linear. The resulting problem can be cast as a linear program and has the advantage of guaranteed convergence, global optimality, repeatability and computational efficiency. We show that our proposed approach outperforms the state-of-art on a number of benchmark datasets.

32A Linear Programming Approach To Dynamical Equivalence, Linear Conjugacy, And The Deficiency One Theorem
By Matthew D. Johnston
The well-known Deficiency One Theorem gives structural conditions on a chemical reaction network under which, for any set of parameter values, the steady states of the corresponding mass action system may be easily characterized. It is also known, however, that mass action systems are not uniquely associated with reaction networks and that some representations may satisfy the Deficiency One Theorem while others may not. In this paper we present a mixed-integer linear programming framework capable of determining whether a given mass action system has a dynamically equivalent or linearly conjugate representation which has an underlying network satisfying the Deficiency One Theorem. This extends recent computational work determining linearly conjugate systems which are weakly reversible and have a deficiency of zero.

33On Infinite Dimensional Linear Programming Approach To Stochastic Control
By Maryam Kamgarpour and Tyler Summers
We consider the infinite dimensional linear programming (inf-LP) approach for solving stochastic control problems. The inf-LP corresponding to problems with uncountable state and input spaces is in general computationally intractable. By focusing on linear systems with quadratic cost (LQG), we establish a connection between this approach and the well-known Riccati LMIs. In particular, we show that the semidefinite programs known for the LQG problem can be derived from the pair of primal and dual inf-LPs. Furthermore, we establish a connection between multi-objective and chance constraint criteria and the inf-LP formulation.

36Cheap Vs Healthy: Analyzing McDonald’s Menu Using Linear Programming
By Bulletin of Electrical Engineering and Informatics
The factors that influence food choices nowadays are time, cost and deliciousness. An obvious example is fast food. Although consumers are aware that fast food is not a healthy choice, many still chooses fast food because it is convenient. Therefore in this paper, by using linear programming, we analyzed McDonald‟s Malaysia menu in order to find the cheapest menu and the „healthiest‟ menu. We developed a linear programming model for McDonald‟s Malaysia menu which adheres to Malaysia Recommended Nutrient Intake 2017 (RNI 2017). Then we solved the model and proposed the cheapest menu and also the „healthiest‟ menu that meets the nutrient requirement based on RNI 2017. The result showed that price for the cheapest palatable menu is RM21.69 a day. For set menu, we found that no menu meets this requirement, suggesting that McDonald‟s set menu should not be taken three times a day. The price for the „healthiest‟ McDonald‟s menu with the least total of fat, sugar and salt that meets the nutrient requirement is RM42.99 a day

37DTIC AD0736874: Chance-Constrained Linear Programming With Distribution-Free Constraints
By Defense Technical Information Center
The report is concerned with methods of approximating the chance- constrained set S = (x such that/Pr(A x=or B)=or alpha) when the underlying distribution, F(.) of the random variate (A, B) is non-normal. The resulting sets are completely distribution-free in that no assumptions are made about the form of F(.) or any of its parameters. The concept employed is the distribution- free tolerance region. This is a sample based region containing 100 alpha percent of the population, at a confidence level, beta. The elements of the distribution-free sets satisfy the chance-constraint, Pr(Ax = or B) =or alpha with a confidence of at least beta. Furthermore, the sample size required to attain this level of confidence is readily available in tabular or graphical form. The superiority of the distribution-free approach over existing chance- constrained methods is demonstrated using simulated gamma variates.

38Codeword-Independent Performance Of Nonbinary Linear Codes Under Linear-Programming And Sum-Product Decoding
By Mark F. Flanagan
A coded modulation system is considered in which nonbinary coded symbols are mapped directly to nonbinary modulation signals. It is proved that if the modulator-channel combination satisfies a particular symmetry condition, the codeword error rate performance is independent of the transmitted codeword. It is shown that this result holds for both linear-programming decoders and sum-product decoders. In particular, this provides a natural modulation mapping for nonbinary codes mapped to PSK constellations for transmission over memoryless channels such as AWGN channels or flat fading channels with AWGN.

43"A Practical Introduction To Integer Linear Programming" - Igor Ferst (Pyohio 2019)
By Igor Ferst
Igor Ferst https://www.pyohio.org/2019/presentations/86 How do airlines choose which planes service which routes? How does a hospital optimize the shift schedule for hundreds of doctors and nurses? How do you choose the optimal location for a group of fulfillment centers, or oil derricks, or cell towers? These kinds of problems (and many others!) can be solved with integer linear programming (ILP), a powerful and decades-old framework for solving optimization problems. In this talk we will give a brief introduction to ILP and describe it's uses, strengths, and weaknesses. We will also show how to solve a real-world vehicle routing problem using Google's open-source python library for ILP. Trigger warning: this talk will contain high-school level math. Integer linear programming (ILP) is a powerful framework for solving optimization problems related to scheduling, resource allocation, vehicle routing, and many other areas. This talk will give a brief introduction to ILP and show how to solve a real-world vehicle routing problem using Google's open-source python library for ILP. === https://pyohio.org A FREE annual conference for anyone interested in Python in and around Ohio, the entire Midwest, maybe even the whole world. 45Randomized Linear Programming Solves The Discounted Markov Decision Problem In Nearly-Linear Running Time
By Mengdi Wang
We propose a randomized linear programming algorithm for approximating the optimal policy of the discounted Markov decision problem. By leveraging the value-policy duality, the algorithm adaptively samples state transitions and makes exponentiated primal-dual updates. We show that it finds an $\epsilon$-optimal policy using nearly-linear running time in the worst case. For Markov decision processes that are ergodic under every stationary policy, we show that the algorithm finds an $\epsilon$-optimal policy using running time linear in the total number of state-action pairs, which is sublinear in the input size. These results provide new complexity benchmarks for solving stochastic dynamic programs.

48Loop Calculus Helps To Improve Belief Propagation And Linear Programming Decodings Of Low-Density-Parity-Check Codes
By Michael Chertkov and Vladimir Y. Chernyak
We illustrate the utility of the recently developed loop calculus for improving the Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm. If the algorithm that minimizes the Bethe free energy fails we modify the free energy by accounting for a critical loop in a graphical representation of the code. The log-likelihood specific critical loop is found by means of the loop calculus. The general method is tested using an example of the Linear Programming (LP) decoding, that can be viewed as a special limit of the BP decoding. Considering the (155,64,20) code that performs over Additive-White-Gaussian-Noise channel we show that the loop calculus improves the LP decoding and corrects all previously found dangerous configurations of log-likelihoods related to pseudo-codewords with low effective distance, thus reducing the code's error-floor.

50Efficient Implementation Of Linear Programming Decoding
By Mohammad H. Taghavi, Amin Shokrollahi and Paul H. Siegel
While linear programming (LP) decoding provides more flexibility for finite-length performance analysis than iterative message-passing (IMP) decoding, it is computationally more complex to implement in its original form, due to both the large size of the relaxed LP problem, and the inefficiency of using general-purpose LP solvers. This paper explores ideas for fast LP decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. We first prove, by modifying the previously reported Adaptive LP decoding scheme to allow removal of unnecessary constraints, that LP decoding can be performed by solving a number of LP problems that contain at most one linear constraint derived from each of the parity-check constraints. By exploiting this property, we study a sparse interior-point implementation for solving this sequence of linear programs. Since the most complex part of each iteration of the interior-point algorithm is the solution of a (usually ill-conditioned) system of linear equations for finding the step direction, we propose a preconditioning algorithm to facilitate iterative solution of such systems. The proposed preconditioning algorithm is similar to the encoding procedure of LDPC codes, and we demonstrate its effectiveness via both analytical methods and computer simulation results.
