X-rays are commonly performed imaging tests that use small amounts of radiation to produce pictures of the organs, tissues, and bones of the body. X-rays of the chest are used to detect abnormalities or diseases of the airways, blood vessels, bones, heart, and lungs. In this work we present a stochastic attention-based model that is capable of learning what regions within a chest X-ray scan should be visually explored in order to conclude that the scan contains a specific radiological abnormality. The proposed model is a recurrent neural network (RNN) that learns to sequentially sample the entire X-ray and focus only on informative areas that are likely to contain the relevant information. We report on experiments carried out with more than $100,000$ X-rays containing enlarged hearts or medical devices. The model has been trained using reinforcement learning methods to learn task-specific policies.

What are some of the things we can do to create meaningful field experiences prior to student teaching? An attempt to cater to career-changers with day jobs led to the creation of a small tutor seminar group. The students tutored secondary mathematics students, met monthly as a group, and communicated with the instructor weekly through e-mail. Individualized assessment, lesson planning, instructional strategies and reflective journals helped students to explore how individualized instruction can inform classroom teaching. In this session, the course objectives and methods will be briefly discussed, and sample work and reflections of the tutor participants will be examined. This will lead the session's participants into a discussion of what creates a meaningful field experience, and what we can do to provide more of them for a wide range of student needs. (Author)

In order to plan and implement lessons that will be effective for a wide variety of learners, teachers must assess what students know and how they know it. They must also know students' academic strengths, challenges, and preferences. Careful observation of what students do and say as they work provides a rich source of data about both their knowledge and ways of learning. We highlight three strategies we use to help teachers refine their understanding of individual students: (a) building teachers' skills in observing without making judgements; (b) teaching teachers to use a shared, neurodevelopmental framework through which to view student learning and behavior; and (c) facilitating collaboration among general education and special education teachers in using these tools to assess student learning and plan lessons. The combination of careful observations, a neurodevelopmental lens through which to see and interpret the observations, and the different perspectives of general and special education teachers, builds a foundation for planning appropriately leveled and rigorous lessons that leverage students' strengths while supporting them in their weaker areas.

Current automatic vision systems face two major challenges: scalability and extreme variability of appearance. First, the computational time required to process an image typically scales linearly with the number of pixels in the image, therefore limiting the resolution of input images to thumbnail size. Second, variability in appearance and pose of the objects constitute a major hurdle for robust recognition and detection. In this work, we propose a model that makes baby steps towards addressing these challenges. We describe a learning based method that recognizes objects through a series of glimpses. This system performs an amount of computation that scales with the complexity of the input rather than its number of pixels. Moreover, the proposed method is potentially more robust to changes in appearance since its parameters are learned in a data driven manner. Preliminary experiments on a handwritten dataset of digits demonstrate the computational advantages of this approach.

In 2015, the world, through UNESCO adopted the 2030 agenda for sustainable development floated on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to "transform our world." SDG4 titled "Quality Education" seeks to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all and promote lifelong learning." An ordinary look at SDG4 would make it appear as an extension of "Education for All." However, there are differences. One difference that stands out is the undercurrent of the need to connect education to the key indicators of existence in its context especially through learning and equity. SDG4, as indeed many policies and agenda at the global level, tends to face challenges peculiar to the uniqueness of the African continent. Most governments struggle to include such goals in their national plans in ways that connect the real context of their people. One major area of concern for us is the area of culture where most programmes introduced into Africa, including into schools, are dressed in cultures foreign to the receiving communities. The authors of this paper argue that for SDG4 and similar programmes to fulfill their objective; they must find ways of embracing and adapting authentic African culture. The authors theorise in literature and use African cultures to drive its analysis. We conclude that African culture is the most viable framework for ensuring quality education that causes and sustains development along the lines envisaged by SDG4. This language skill is a complex strategy that takes careful planning and activities for ESL preschoolers to achieve. ESL preschoolers develop reading and phonic skills through daily reading aloud. A popular way preschoolers interact with reading daily is through the activity circle time. Circle time is essential for language and confidence building (Mosley, 2005). This method is useful for language learners because it allows them early access to vocabulary and illustrations of phonic words, that they may be unfamiliar with. Early reading development is linked to their academic success and increases their future endeavors in becoming successful in learning English. Preschool is a critical time for English language learners. ESL preschoolers rely heavily on sensory activities that contribute to their cognitive brain development. In this paper, we leverage Reinforcement Learning (RL) to highlight task-relevant locations of input frames. We propose a soft attention mechanism combined with the Deep Q-Network (DQN) model to teach an RL agent how to play a game and where to look by focusing on the most pertinent parts of its visual input. Our evaluations on several Atari 2600 games show that the soft attention based model could predict fixation locations significantly better than bottom-up models such as Itti-Kochs saliency and Graph-Based Visual Saliency (GBVS) models.

This study investigates the face-name matching effect proposed by Zwebner et al., (2017) with a name learning paradigm in which participants have to learn 20 face-name pairs. In half of the trials, the name to be learned will be the depicted person’s actual name (matches) and in the other half of the trials, the faces will be paired with a name that is not that of the depicted person (mismatches). Additionally, the matches have a high goodness-of-fit of the face and name, whereas the mismatches have a low goodness-of-fit. Evidence for the face-name matching effect would be provided if the matches are learned faster than the mismatches.

The adption of the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) as a guideline in Malaysian English language education has led the Ministry of Education to replace locally-developed English textbooks with a selection of imported titles. While considering the significance of intercultural skills in the English curriculum, there is a need to look into the aspect of relevance in using imported texts to suit local cultural demands. This study is dual focal in nature; it investigated not only the impacts of cultural elements embedded in imported textbooks on Malaysian students' attitude but also gathered their perception on the aspect through survey research. For the purpose of this study, it specifies on the use of English Plus 1 -- an imported textbook, published by Oxford University Press. A questionnaire which was adopted from Xiao (2010), was then distributed to 39 Malaysian pupils of suburban Chinese-type primary schools in Perak who were selected using a convenience sampling technique. The findings indicated that the use of English Plus 1 has impacted pupils' attitude where it was observed that their perception towards learning English became more negative due to the focus of the textbooks inclines towards a culture that was not familiar to Malaysians. The implications derived from this study suggest teachers' flexibility at adopting a range of teaching approaches that might also need to be creative in its nature in order to impart cultural information to the young learners. Simultaneously, a more pro-active solution could be taken at the administrative level by carefully scrutinizing the cultural elements embedded in imported texts to adopt cultural suitability for young learners. This article describes how the Common Core Look-fors application for the iPad was used to help preservice early childhood education and elementary/special education teachers learn to look for and recognize student enactment of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics' Standards for Mathematical Practice. After using the iPad application for one semester in their college course and in their internships, the pre-service teachers reported that the application helped them to understand and identify the Standards for Mathematical Practice. The first tries to understand and model where people look on high resolution images using a data driven, machine learning approach. We collected eye tracking data of 15 viewers on 1003 images and use this database as training and testing to learn a model of saliency based on both bottom up and top down image features. The second project aims to understand where people look when an image is shown at lower resolutions. It uncovers trends answering the questions: how much image resolution is needed before fixations are consistent with fixations on high resolution images? at which resolution are viewers most consistent about where they look? The use of rendered images, whether from completely synthetic datasets or from 3D reconstructions, is increasingly prevalent in vision tasks. However, little attention has been given to how the selection of viewpoints affects the performance of rendered training sets. In this paper, we propose a data-driven approach to view set selection. Given a set of example images, we extract statistics describing their contents and generate a set of views matching the distribution of those statistics. Motivated by semantic segmentation tasks, we model the spatial distribution of each semantic object category within an image view volume. We provide a search algorithm that generates a sampling of likely candidate views according to the example distribution, and a set selection algorithm that chooses a subset of the candidates that jointly cover the example distribution. Results of experiments with these algorithms on SUNCG indicate that they are indeed able to produce view distributions similar to an example set from NYUDv2 according to the earth mover's distance. Furthermore, the selected views improve performance on semantic segmentation compared to alternative view selection algorithms.

Jefferys Taylor was born in 1792 in Suffolk, England. He became apprenticed to his father who was an engraver and invented a special ruling machine for engravers but went on to emulate his mother who was a children's writer. His books include favourites like Harry's Holliday or the Doings of One Who had Nothing to Do and The Little Historians. <br><br>This book "Aesop in Rhyme" published in 1820, contains 58 of Aesop's Fables which he has retold in verse as well as 13 original fables of his own. Whatever will stimulate the observing tendencies of the young cannot but be of value to them. "Eyes and No Eyes" does this in a delightful way. The story is so natural that the child is wrapped up in it, and so it makes a deep impress upon him. Much less could be accomplished by simply telling him to observe, or lecturing upon the value of keeping one's eyes open. But when the reader sees how much more William gets out of his walk than Robert, and what marvellous things exist everywhere if one is on the lookout for them, he is himself incited to examine with greater care the many more or less ordinary things he has neglected heretofore. William and Robert become very real individuals to the child, and there is no doubt which of them he will choose to emulate. The author relies upon the force of concrete example to determine the conduct of children, and this is certainly sound in theory and endorsed by experience. Two of the stories are written by a brother-sister team of John Aikin and Jane Barbauld and are from their multi-volume work on "The Art of Seeing". The first of two volumes telling the life story of Pastor Hsi, a Confucian scholar from Shanxi province in Northern China who became a Christian in the 1870s. Pastor Hsi grew up in a China now long gone, when the scholarly class to which he belonged held a leading place in society.
