Many language learners lack the motivation to read complex texts. Because high-immersion Virtual Reality (VR) is increasingly reported to be highly motivating, the goal of our study was to compare English as a Second Language (ESL) learners' (N=79) motivation while reading a story with subtitles in VR (experimental group) versus reading the same story screencast in two-dimensions (2D -- control group). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed that learners' motivation in VR was significantly higher compared with the control group. Our finding confirmed that VR is highly motivational in the context of reading foreign texts and can be useful for Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) researchers, practitioners, and instructional designers. This analysis is a part of a larger study (Kaplan-Rakowski & Gruber, 2023) on VR facilitating reading tasks. Damage control resuscitation (DCR) is emerging as a standard practice in civilian and military trauma care. Primary objectives include resolution of immediate life threats followed by optimization of physiological status in the perioperative period. To accomplish this, DCR employs a unique hypotensive hemostatic resuscitation strategy that avoids traditional crystalloid intravenous fluids in favor of early blood component use in ratios mimicking whole blood. The presence of uncontrolled major hemorrhage (UMH) coupled with a delay in access to hemostatic surgical intervention remains a primary contributor to preventable death in both combat and in many domestic settings, including rural areas and disaster sites. As a result, civilian and military emergency care leaders throughout the world have sought a means to project DCR principles forward of the traditional trauma resuscitation bay, into such remote environments as disaster scenes, rural health facilities, and the contemporary battlefield. After reflecting on experiences from past conflicts, defining current capability gaps, and examining available and potential solutions, a strategy for remote damage control resuscitation (RDCR) has been proposed. In order for RDCR to progress from concept to clinical strategy, it will be necessary to define existing gaps in knowledge and clinical capability; develop a lexicon so that investigators and operators may understand each other; establish coherent research and development agendas; and execute comprehensive investigations designed to predict, diagnose, and mitigate the consequences of hemorrhagic shock and acute traumatic coagulopathy before they become irreversible.

We explore this question in the domain of language transfer by native German speakers living in the Netherlands. When these speakers move to the Netherlands and start to speak Dutch very frequently, they oftentimes show transfer, that is, they use German words or constructions similarly to how these are used in Dutch (e.g., *Versprechen tun instead of Versprechen geben based on belofte doen). This kind of language transfer is an ideal topic to study the contrast between automaticity and agency: it is a phenomenon that, although people typically want to avoid it in their German (agency), occurs very frequently for these speakers (automaticity). In this experiment, we test how this transfer is related to attitudes, awareness, and cognitive control.

QPA-CLIPS is an extension of CLIPS oriented towards process control applications. Its constructs define a dependency network of process actions driven by sensor information. The language consists of three basic constructs: TASK, SENSOR, and FILTER. TASK's define the dependency network describing alternative state transitions for a process. SENSOR's and FILTER's define sensor information sources used to activate state transitions within the network. Deftemplate's define these constructs and their run-time environment is an interpreter knowledge base, performing pattern matching on sensor information and so activating TASK's in the dependency network. The pattern matching technique is based on the repeatable occurrence of a sensor data pattern. QPA-CIPS has been successfully tested on a SPARCStation providing supervisory control to an Allen-Bradley PLC 5 controller driving molding equipment.

The status of an ongoing project to explore the application of Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) technology to NASA command and control languages is described. The primary objective of the current phase of the project is to develop a user interface for an ITS to assist NASA control center personnel in learning Systems Test and Operations Language (STOL). Although this ITS will be developed for Gamma Ray Observatory operators, it will be designed with sufficient flexibility so that its modules may serve as an ITS for other control languages such as the User Interface Language (UIL). The focus of this phase is to develop at least one other form of STOL representation to complement the operational STOL interface. Such an alternative representation would be adaptively employed during the tutoring session to facilitate the learning process. This is a key feature of this ITS which distinguishes it from a simulator that is only capable of representing the operational environment.

To use computers as a medium to learn a language, there is need for some GUI-elements indicating and regulating the actual status of training. These elements have to be separated into obligatory ones, useful in almost all CALL-software, and facultative ones, necessary for most "teachware." Due to a general need of reducing the difficulties to get into the use of a training program for language learning, a standardization, as far as possible, of these GUI-elements should be aimed for. Suggestions for design and function are made on the basis of the training program "Verbindungsarten" (German as a foreign language/for special purposes: mechanical engineering). When bilinguals use one of their two languages, both languages are simultaneously activated, resulting in cross-language interference (Costa, Santesteban, & Ivanova, 2006; Ton, Jonathan, & Walter, 1999; Marian et al., 2017; Costa et al., 2017). Language control is engaged to resolve language competition and select the target language (Green, 1998). In recent decades, much research has examined the neural mechanisms associated with bilingual language control. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), as a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, has been widely used to investigate the causal relationship between specific brain regions and their associated cognitive functions. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have explored the effects of tDCS on a range of cognitive tasks, including language processing (Vaughn et al., 2021; Leite et al., 2013; Tayeb & Lavidor, 2016), working memory (Živanović et al., 2021), and motor learning (Cuypers et al., 2013). Previous tDCS studies have predominantly employed single-site stimulation to establish causal relationships between brain regions and language control functions (Vaughn et al., 2021; Dedoncker et al., 2016; Leite et al., 2013; Tayeb & Lavidor, 2016; Li et al., 2018; Radman et al., 2018; Pestalozzi et al., 2020; Yuan et al., 2022). Given that complex language control functions rely on the interaction of well-integrated brain networks (Thiebaut & Forkel, 2022; Abutalebi & Green, 2016; Wu et al., 2019), dual-site stimulation may enhance the activation of language control networks, thereby improving the efficacy of tDCS in modulating language control functions. In addition to the targeted brain regions, varying stimulation intensity parameters are also a critical factor in tDCS research. According to the physical principles of tDCS, the current intensity in the brain exhibits a linear increase corresponding to the applied current (Bikson et al., 2016). However, the relationship between stimulation intensity and efficacy remains uncertain in language studies. In summary, the aim of this study is to explore the causal relationship between the pre-SMA , the left cerebellum and bilingual language control by using both single-site and dual-site tDCS targeting different brain regions with varying stimulation intensities. This approach will not only reveal the neural correlates for bilingual language control but also establish a quantitative relationship between tDCS dosage and behavioral performance.

Previous tDCS studies have predominantly employed single-site stimulation to establish causal relationships between brain regions and language control functions (Vaughn et al., 2021; Dedoncker et al., 2016; Leite et al., 2013; Tayeb & Lavidor, 2016; Li et al., 2018; Radman et al., 2018; Pestalozzi et al., 2020; Yuan et al., 2022). Given that complex language control functions rely on the interaction of well-integrated brain networks (Thiebaut & Forkel, 2022; Abutalebi & Green, 2016; Wu et al., 2019), dual-site stimulation may enhance the activation of language control networks, thereby improving the efficacy of tDCS in modulating language control functions. In addition to the targeted brain regions, varying stimulation intensity parameters are also a critical factor in tDCS research. According to the physical principles of tDCS, the current intensity in the brain exhibits a linear increase corresponding to the applied current (Bikson et al., 2016). However, the relationship between stimulation intensity and efficacy remains uncertain in language studies. In summary, the aim of this study is to explore the causal relationship between the pre-SMA , the left cerebellum and bilingual language control by using both single-site and dual-site tDCS targeting different brain regions with varying stimulation intensities. This approach will not only reveal the neural correlates for bilingual language control but also establish a quantitative relationship between tDCS dosage and behavioral performance.

When bilinguals use one of their two languages, both languages are simultaneously activated, resulting in cross-language interference (Costa, Santesteban, & Ivanova, 2006; Ton, Jonathan, & Walter, 1999; Marian et al., 2017; Costa et al., 2017). Language control is engaged to resolve language competition and select the target language (Green, 1998). In recent decades, many research has examined the neural mechanisms associated with bilingual language control. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), as a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, has been widely used to investigate the causal relationship between specific brain regions and their associated cognitive functions. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have explored the effects of tDCS on a range of cognitive tasks, including language processing (Vaughn et al., 2021; Leite et al., 2013; Tayeb & Lavidor, 2016), working memory (Živanović et al., 2021), and motor learning (Cuypers et al., 2013). Several studies showed that there is a correlation between oral comprehension and cognitive control. We will try to establish a causal link between the two. Because WM performance requires cognitive control, we will use a complex span task to determine whether or not recall performance is affected by the difficulty of a concurrent oral comprehension task. We will measure recall capacities and the accuracy of determining the congruence of a sentence and its matching picture across two experimental conditions affirmative-active and negative-passive.

Abstract Background: Parkinson’s disease is a common movement disorder affecting approximately 127,000 people in the UK, with an estimated two thirds having speech-related problems. Currently there is no preferred approach to speech and language therapy within the NHS and there is little evidence for the effectiveness of standard NHS therapy or Lee Silverman voice treatment. This trial aims to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of randomizing people with Parkinson’s disease-related speech or voice problems to Lee Silverman voice treatment or standard speech and language therapy compared to a no-intervention control. Methods/Design: The PD COMM pilot is a three arm, assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial. Randomization will be computer-generated with participants randomized at a ratio of 1:1:1. Participants randomized to intervention arms will be immediately referred to the appropriate speech and language therapist. The target population are patients with a confirmed diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease who have problems with their speech or voice. The Lee Silverman voice treatment intervention group will receive the standard regime of 16 sessions between 50 and 60 minutes in length over four weeks, with extra home practice. The standard speech and language therapy intervention group will receive a dose determined by patients’ individual needs, but not exceeding eight weeks of treatment. The control group will receive standard care with no speech and language therapy input for at least six months post-randomization. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline (pre-randomization) and post- randomization at three, six, and 12 months. The outcome measures include patient-reported voice measures, quality of life, resource use, and assessor-rated speech recordings. The recruitment aim is at least 60 participants over 21 months from 11 sites, equating to at least 20 participants in each arm of the trial. This trial is ongoing and recruitment commenced in May 2012. Discussion: This study will provide information on the feasibility and acceptability of randomizing participants to different speech and language therapies or control/deferred treatment. The findings relating to recruitment, treatment compliance, outcome measures, and effect size will inform a future phase III randomized controlled trial. This pre-registration describes further planned analyses using the data described in the project entitled “Moving from China to York: How do changes in language experiences modulate bilingual language control?” (preregistered here: https://osf.io/dxm3h; “MCY_1” henceforth). It aims to further examine if and how individual bilingual language experiences (including proficiency, use, switching) relate to the way bilinguals apply language control over their first (L1) and their second language (L2) during language production and comprehension. As described in the pre-registration of MCY_1, a group of Mandarin-English bilinguals (the “Move group”) were tested longitudinally in their first year in the UK on a set of language control tasks (e.g., single-language production, cued and voluntary switching production, and processing of language switches). Here we describe the assessments of their everyday life bilingual experiences with their two languages and the analyses examining the relationship between (changes in) these experiences and (changes in) language control.

This paper presents a method for the automatic extraction of subgrammars to control and speeding-up natural language generation NLG. The method is based on explanation-based learning (EBL). The main advantage for the proposed new method for NLG is that the complexity of the grammatical decision making process during NLG can be vastly reduced, because the EBL method supports the adaption of a NLG system to a particular use of a language.

The Department of Defense has stated that Ada shall become the single, common computer programming language for Defense mission-critical applications beginning in 1984. The proposal to make Ada a NATO standard High Order Language (HOL) as well, prompted the GCP to provide a Lecture Series embracing the basic structure, theories and principles embodied in this HOL. The need to reduce escalating software life-cycle costs is the raison d'etre for Ada. Early experience with the language suggests that the promise of increased software productivity can be fulfilled. However, many problems remain; the need for validated and efficient compilers targeted for computers suitable to the guidance and control application, and software development environments built around Ada, are two among the foremost. This Lecture Series addresses both the promise and the problems. Following an introduction to Ada, the structure and features of the language are described. Two special features of Ada, parallel processing and software reusability, are discussed in detail. Compiler development and validation, and the use of Ada in programming environments are described. Finally, the use of Ada in a real-world pilot project is described.

LANGUAGE PROBLEMS, HOWEVER, ARE KNOWN TO PLAGUE DEVELOPING SOCIETIES.
