The current work explores the cognitive mechanisms at the basis of the benefits of spreading learning instances over blocking them for visual learning. We evaluate two possible explanations: the passing of time between learning instances (i.e. the Spacing Effect) or the possibility to engage in meaningful comparisons between learning stimuli (i.e., Interleaved learning). We look at the impact on retention, induction, and deep feature learning. The Spacing effect is concerned with timing and advocates for spaced over massed presentation. The Interleaving literature talks about sequence and advocates for interleaving examples with instances of other rules, as opposed to a blocked presentation in which instances of the same rule are presented sequentially. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, each principle points at a different cognitive mechanism and thus has different implications for pedagogical and instructional design. In the current work we separate the temporal (spacing) and ordinal (interleaving) mechanisms without extending the overall study procedure or changing the type of stimuli. We do so by manipulating the stimuli itself, in addition to manipulating its presentation order. Our goal is to evaluate whether, ceteris paribus, it is the passing of time (i.e., Spacing) or the opportunities for meaningful comparisons (Interleaving) at the base of this robust learning phenomenon. In this work we will use different stimuli types (art genres by different artists) presented under different schedules (Massed, Interleaved or Spaced), each of these schedules hypothesized to facilitate a different learning mechanism, to assess the learners’ performance on retention, induction and deep feature recognition test items.

VanaCast - It's About Time

Introduction: Pubertal timing and tempo vary between individuals, which may explain some observed differences in patterns of brain development as there are associations in model systems between sex steroid hormones and neurodevelopment. There is also a suggested link between pubertal processes and adolescent-emergent mental health disorders, and thus a theory that neurodevelopment mechanistically relates puberty and mental health in adolescence. Therefore, we need to look closer at pubertal timing and tempo in the context of neural development during adolescence using longitudinal samples to further explore this potential relationship. Participants: This preregistered study uses data collected in 174 adolescent girls across three time points to explore how the pattern of structural brain development differs by pubertal timing and tempo. Methods: The brain data is processed and quality-assured through the Freesurfer pipeline. We quantified cortical thickness for 68 cortical regions, as defined by the Desikan-Killiany parcellation, and subcortical volume for 12 regions, as defined by the ASEG atlas. Saliva data is assayed for estradiol, testosterone, and DHEA using Salimetrics Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) kits. We are using the Pubertal Development Scale and line drawing scores to approximate Tanner Stage. Pubertal timing is defined as the random intercept and pubertal tempo is defined as the random slope for each participant in a model predicting pubertal stage from age. Conclusion: This exploration can lead to better-informed questions regarding puberty’s impact on the way brains develop and in turn, produce more efficient and translatable work. Reference our published preregistration for more details regarding the analysis plan and specific questions.
