Whereas some actions are spontaneous and have consequences that are experienced nearly immediately, other actions are planned in advance, and there is a delay between the intention and the outcome. Currently, it is unclear how, if at all, the temporal dynamics of setting an intention impacts the sense of agency (Pacherie, 2015). The current research aims to address this issue and investigate how the delay between forming an intention and experiencing outcomes of one’s actions affects the sense of agency. Moreover, the mixed results obtained in past studies could indicate that contradictory mechanisms may be involved. To address these inconsistencies, we propose two studies that will investigate two possible mediating processes: expectation-outcome congruence and a feeling of having an unconstrained choice. In both studies, participants will be asked to perform a planned (vs. unplanned vs. externally planned) action, and their sense of agency, as well as proposed meditators, will be measured. Study 1 will be conducted online using a between-subjects design. Here, we will also explore the role of personality traits that may moderate the effects of planning on the sense of agency. Study 2 will be conducted in the lab using a within-subjects design and will additionally include an implicit measure of agency (i.e., a temporal binding task).

This paper will explore the application of time as a critical factor in exercising the elements of national power, specifically differences in how the concept of time is applied by the United States and China. The paper will discuss diplomatic, informational, military, and economic aspects of time, and examine whether time plays a critical role in each element of national power. During an analysis of the military element of power, a specific question for exploration is as follows: Does time serve as a domain of warfare similar to the domains of land, air, maritime, space, and cyberspace? How does time in the Chinese mindset relate to Ancient Chinese Stratagems and how they are used today against the United States? The paper will conclude with a discussion of the potential for future conflict between China and the United States, and an analysis of how time, in Chinese national strategy, is evident in its current interactions with the United States.

Introduction: Pubertal timing and tempo vary between individuals, which may explain some observed differences in patterns of brain development as there are associations in model systems between sex steroid hormones and neurodevelopment. There is also a suggested link between pubertal processes and adolescent-emergent mental health disorders, and thus a theory that neurodevelopment mechanistically relates puberty and mental health in adolescence. Therefore, we need to look closer at pubertal timing and tempo in the context of neural development during adolescence using longitudinal samples to further explore this potential relationship. Participants: This preregistered study uses data collected in 174 adolescent girls across three time points to explore how the pattern of structural brain development differs by pubertal timing and tempo. Methods: The brain data is processed and quality-assured through the Freesurfer pipeline. We quantified cortical thickness for 68 cortical regions, as defined by the Desikan-Killiany parcellation, and subcortical volume for 12 regions, as defined by the ASEG atlas. Saliva data is assayed for estradiol, testosterone, and DHEA using Salimetrics Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) kits. We are using the Pubertal Development Scale and line drawing scores to approximate Tanner Stage. Pubertal timing is defined as the random intercept and pubertal tempo is defined as the random slope for each participant in a model predicting pubertal stage from age. Conclusion: This exploration can lead to better-informed questions regarding puberty’s impact on the way brains develop and in turn, produce more efficient and translatable work. Reference our published preregistration for more details regarding the analysis plan and specific questions.

September 11th, 2001, served as a harsh wake-up call for America and especially for the U.S. Intelligence Community. Among the intelligence shortfalls within the Department of Defense (DoD) was the lack of foreign language capabilities. The United States is long overdue in building a national framework that addresses foreign language and cultural illiteracy and develops the professional-level expertise capable of performing tasks critical to national security and economic prosperity in the 21st century operating environment. Time is the most critical factor in developing professional-level linguists. Policies and programs for language learning which center on time-on-task will bring the DoD and government agencies responsible for national security and economic development much closer to the goal of achieving a sufficient number of language professionals. This paper offers strategic policy recommendations geared toward developing operationally-proficient language professionals. These recommendations include challenging the nation toward greater foreign-language proficiency, establishing a national foreign-language framework, immigration reform, putting technology in its proper place, and leveraging the potential of the Reserve Component.
