2Intelligent Virtual Agents As Language Trainers Facilitate Multilingualism.

By

This article is from Frontiers in Psychology , volume 5 . Abstract In this paper we introduce a new generation of language trainers: intelligent virtual agents (IVAs) with human appearance and the capability to teach foreign language vocabulary. We report results from studies that we have conducted with Billie, an IVA employed as a vocabulary trainer, as well as research findings on the acceptance of the agent as a trainer by adults and children. The results show that Billie can train humans as well as a human teacher can and that both adults and children accept the IVA as a trainer. The advantages of IVAs are multiple. First, their teaching methods can be based on neuropsychological research findings concerning memory and learning practice. Second, virtual teachers can provide individualized training. Third, they coach users during training, are always supportive, and motivate learners to train. Fourth, agents will reside in the user's mobile devices and thus be at the user's disposal everywhere and anytime. Agents in apps will make foreign language training accessible to anybody at low cost. This will enable people around the world, including physically, financially, and geographically disadvantaged persons, to learn a foreign language and help to facilitate multilingualism.

6Human Interaction With Artificially Intelligent Virtual Agents

By

The "social being" perspective has largely influenced the design and research of AI virtual agents. Do humans really treat these agents as social beings? To test this, we conduct a 2×2 mixed-design online experiment employing the Cyberball paradigm; specifically, we examine individuals' mindless and mindful responses (i.e., real-time behaviour and retrospective perceptions, respectively) when observing an AI virtual agent being ostracised or treated fairly by another human, and then compare our results with those from human-human Cyberball research. Furthermore, we explore whether individual differences would influence the tendency to treat AI virtual agents as social beings by examining the potential moderating effects of a range of user characteristics (i.e., agent usage experience, dispositional traits, and demographics).

7Deployed Virtual Consulting: The Fusion Of Wearable Computing, Collaborative Technology, Augmented Reality And Intelligent Agents To Support Fleet Aviation Maintenance

By

This thesis addresses the need of Naval Aviation Maintenance to streamline and more effectively manage the process of technical consultation aboard deployed aircraft carriers. The current process involves the physical transportation of an appropriate technician to the carrier to perform required maintenance and/or repairs. In light of the technology currently available this process becomes obviously obsolete, overly costly and needlessly time consuming. By implementing wireless technology in combination with advanced software allowing the virtual collaboration of parties widely separated by geographical distance the Navy can establish a \"virtual technical presence\" onboard aircraft carriers wherever they may be in the world. This thesis will describe how the fusion of wearable computing, augmented reality, intelligent agents coupled with CoABS, and a modern collaborative software application can revolutionize Naval aviation maintenance as we know it. The technology is there - it only remains for the Navy to leverage it and take advantage of the significant returns that it will provide. The implementation of this technology will allow maintainers onboard deployed aircraft carriers to consult in an augmented virtual environment with technical assets on the shore. These shore-based assets will then be able to \"walk\" deployed personnel through complicated repair procedures in a matter of minutes or hours as opposed to the previous need to wait for days for the technician to arrive. This is a bold and innovative new concept that will allow commands at sea to increase their levels of combat readiness and allow them the ability to respond to ever changing mission needs. Turn around times for the repair of critical parts and assemblies will be reduced and readiness levels elevated. The ultimate goal of any command is mission accomplishment. This system will aid commands in achieving that all important goal.

11ERIC ED592692: Predicting Dialogue Acts For Intelligent Virtual Agents With Multimodal Student Interaction Data

By

Recent years have seen a growing interest in intelligent game-based learning environments featuring virtual agents. A key challenge posed by incorporating virtual agents in game-based learning environments is dynamically determining the dialogue moves they should make in order to best support students' problem solving. This paper presents a data-driven modeling approach that uses a Wizard-of-Oz framework to predict human wizards' dialogue acts based on a sequence of multimodal data streams of student interactions with a game-based learning environment. To effectively deal with multiple, parallel sequential data streams, this paper investigates two sequence-labeling techniques: long short-term memory networks (LSTMs) and conditional random fields. We train predictive models utilizing data corpora collected from two Wizard-of-Oz experiments in which a human wizard played the role of the virtual agent unbeknownst to the student. Empirical results suggest that LSTMs that utilize game trace logs and facial action units achieve the highest predictive accuracy. This work can inform the design of intelligent virtual agents that leverage rich multimodal student interaction data in game-based learning environments.
