During this period of performance, 1 March 1997 - 31 August 1997, the NOAA-11 SBUV/2 solar spectral irradiance data set was validated using both internal and external assessments. Initial quality checking revealed minor problems with the data (e.g. residual goniometric errors, that were manifest as differences between the two scans acquired each day). The sources of these errors were determined and the errors were corrected. Time series were constructed for selected wavelengths and the solar irradiance changes measured by the instrument were compared to a Mg II proxy-based model of short- and long-term solar irradiance variations. This analysis suggested that errors due to residual, uncorrected long-term instrument drift have been reduced to less than 1-2% over the entire 5.5 year NOAA-11 data record. Detailed statistical analysis was performed. This analysis, which will be documented in a manuscript now in preparation, conclusively demonstrates the evolution of solar rotation periodicity and strength during solar cycle 22.

The linear and the nonlinear non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation (NMQSD) are well known tools for the description of certain non-Markovian open quantum systems. In this work, we systematically investigate whether the normalized linear NMQSD or the nonlinear NMQSD solutions can be generated by means of a time-continuous measurement. By considering any conceivable measurement scheme in the framework of instruments, we derive a necessary criterion for a measurement interpretation of both equations. Concrete examples show that the normalized linear NMQSD solutions are realizable only in the Markovian limit in general. The application of the presented criterion to the nonlinear NMQSD remains an open issue.

The principle purpose of this work is to use yearly flights of the Shuttle SBUV/w (SSBUV) instrument to maintain the long-term calibration of the NOAA-11 SBUV/2 instrument. During this period of performance we have begun updating the NOAA-11 SBUV/2 characterization and have further refined the SSBUV calibration, both steps which must be completed before the long-term calibration of the SBUV/2 can be completed. We have also performed a first attempt of the calibration transfer, demonstrating the viability of the transfer process.

The purpose of this research is to develop a NOAA-11 SBUV/2 solar spectral irradiance data set which is free from long-term instrument drift, then perform scientific analysis using the data set. During the current period of performance, 29 February 1996 through 31 August 1996, we finalized the NOAA-11 SBUV/2 characterization using internal data. This included updating the instrument's electronic, photomultiplier tube gain, wavelength, diffuser degradation, and goniometric calibrations. We have also completed the SSBUV characterization, 1989-1994, and produced SSBUV irradiances for the first seven SSBUV flights. Both of these steps were needed before the long-term calibration of the NOAA-11 SBUV/2 solar spectral irradiance data set via SSBUV can be undertaken. A second major aspect of this work is to compare solar spectral irradiances from the SBUV/2 instruments and SSBUV with corresponding data from other instruments. In the preceding six months, SSBUV data from the ATLAS-3 (November 1994) mission were compared to coincident SUSIM ATLAS-3 data. The GOME instrument was launched by the European Space Agency in early 1995 and began making solar irradiance measurements in May 1995. Working with GOME scientists, we are using SSBUV data to validate the GOME solar irradiance data. Based in part on those findings, the GOME absolute calibration data were reanalyzed.

The goals established at the onset of this program were fourfold: (1) design and fabricate, (a) a spherical electron sensor, (b) a planar ion sensor, (2) design and fabricate a low voltage power converted, (3) design and develop a nine (9) but successive approximation ADC, (4) design and build suitable test equipment for thorough testing of the SS/IE plasma electronics. The most noteworthy achievement concern the variety of assembly techniques that were tried and failed in the assembly phase of the planar and spherical sensors. This phase pointed out that the simpler a technique is, the more reliable and easier it is. (Author)

The NOAA-9 SBEV/2 instrument has made the first regular measurements ot solar UV activity over a complete solar cycle, beginning in March 1985 and continuing as of this writing. The NOAA-9 solar irradiance data set includes the minimum between Cycles 21-22 and the current minimum at the end of Cycle 22. Although overall solar activity is low during these periods, 27-day rotational modulation is frequently present. The episode of 13-day periodicity observed during September 1994 - March 1995 shows that phenomena previously associated with high levels of solar activity can occur at any point in the solar cycle. The 205 nm irradiance and Mg II index measured by NOAA-9 showed very similar behavior during the Cycle 21-22 minimum in 1985-1986, when 27-day periodicity dominated short-term solar variations, but behaved differently in 1994-1995 during the episode of 13-day periodicity. We plan further investigations into the physical causes of this result, since it affects the extent to which the Mg II index is an accurate proxy for 205 nm irradiance variations during such episodes. This study was conceived when it was observed that in the laboratory, with few exceptions, college freshmen chemistry students did not know how to make accurate measurements. Once the students were made aware of this, they easily learned how. From this experience and in the interest of breaking the cycle, it was decided to assess the ability of preservice science teachers in a graduate education program to make accurate measurements using common laboratory equipment and to analyze the types of misconceptions they had. Misconceptions are summarized for the preservice teachers' responses on length of a plastic straw and a mass measurement of water placed in a 50mL glass cylinder. (YDS)

In our laboratory Cary Model 14 instruments are used to measure the transmittance of optical components. These instruments have been found to have polarization characteristics that affect the transmittance values of anisotropic or dichroic materials. A study was made to determine the extent of polarization in the instruments and its variation with wavelength. Type HNP'B, HN22, and HR Polaroid polarizers and Polacoat polarizing filters, formula 105 UV, were used to cover the wavelength range from 0.2 to 2.5 microns. A Bausch and Lomb 90-8 hot mirror was used to protect the HR Polaroid polarizers. Data points were obtained every 10, 20, or 50 A using a Datex digital system. In the ultraviolet the degree of polarization is fairly constant from 3000 to 4000 A. In the visible the degree of polarization shows some variation with wavelength. In the near infrared the variation of the degree of polarization with wavelength is large, showing sharply defined maxima at approximately 0.77, 0.97, and 1.27 microns. These wavelengths correspond to the calculated positions of the Wood anomalies. The spectral transmittance of optical quality sapphire, a uniaxial crystal, cut at 45, 60, and 90 degrees to the c-axis, showed undulations for certain orientations of the privileged directions.

Satellite instruments operating in the reflective solar wavelength region require accurate and precise determination of the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Functions (BRDFs) of the laboratory and flight diffusers used in their pre-flight and on-orbit calibrations. This paper advances that initial work and presents a comparison of spectral Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) and Directional Hemispherical Reflectance (DHR) of Spectralon*, a common material for laboratory and onorbit flight diffusers. A new measurement setup for BRDF measurements from 900 nm to 2500 nm located at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is described. The GSFC setup employs an extended indium gallium arsenide detector, bandpass filters, and a supercontinuum light source. Comparisons of the GSFC BRDF measurements in the ShortWave InfraRed (SWIR) with those made by the NIST Spectral Trifunction Automated Reference Reflectometer (STARR) are presented. The Spectralon sample used in this study was 2 inch diameter, 99% white pressed and sintered Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) target. The NASA/NIST BRDF comparison measurements were made at an incident angle of 0 deg and viewing angle of 45 deg. Additional BRDF data not compared to NIST were measured at additional incident and viewing angle geometries and are not presented here The total combined uncertainty for the measurement of BRDF in the SWIR range made by the GSFC scatterometer is less than 1% (k=1). This study is in support of the calibration of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Radiation Budget Instrument (RBI) and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) of and other current and future NASA remote sensing missions operating across the reflected solar wavelength region.

Additionally, the precision of the two UARS data sets is better than the original 2 percent goal, especially at wavelengths greater than 160 nm. This excellent agreement can be credited to accurate pre-flight calibrations, comprehensive in-flight calibrations to track instrument degradation, and a coordinated validation program among the UARS and ATLAS solar instrument teams. The solar irradiance results presented here include those derived from UARS SUSIM, UARS SOLSTICE, ATLAS SUSIM and ATLAS SSBUV measurements on 29 March 1992 during the ATLAS-1 mission and on 15 April 1993 during the ATLAS-2 mission. Two ultraviolet spectra from 119 to 410 nm are derived as the weighted average of the UARS SOLSTICE and SUSIM measurements and are recommended as representative solar spectra for the period of the ATLAS-1 and ATLAS-2 missions. The ATLAS-1 mission occurred during the initial phase of the solar cycle 22 decline when solar activity was moderately high. The ATLAS-2 mission occurred later during the declining phase of the solar cycle 22 when solar activity was more moderate.

Two recently developed methods for quantifying tropospheric ozone abundances based on Aura data, the Trajectory-enhanced Tropospheric Ozone Residual (TTOR) and an assimilation of Aura data into Goddard Earth Observing System Version 4 (ASM), are compared to ozone measurements from ozonesonde data collected in April-May 2006 during the INTEX Ozonesonde Network Study 2006 (IONS-06) campaign. Both techniques use Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) observations. Statistics on column ozone amounts for both products are presented. In general, the assimilation compares better to sonde integrated ozone to 200 hPa (28.6% difference for TTOR versus 2.7% difference for ASM), and both products are biased low. To better characterize the performance of ASM, ozone profiles based on the assimilation are compared to those from ozonesondes. We noted slight negative biases in the lower troposphere, and slight positive biases in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UT/ LS), where we observed the greatest variability. Case studies were used to further understand ASM performance. We examine one case from 17 April 2006 at Bratt's Lake, Saskatchewan, where geopotential height gradients appear to be related to an underestimation in the ASM in the UT/LS region. A second case, from 21 April 2006 at Trinidad Head, California, is a situation where the overprediction of ozone in the UT/LS region does not appear to be due to current dynamic conditions but seems to be related to uncertainty in the flow pattern and large differences in MLS observations upstream.

To better characterize the performance of ASM, ozone profiles based on the assimilation are compared to those from ozonesondes. We noted slight negative biases in the lower troposphere, and slight positive biases in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UT/ LS), where we observed the greatest variability. Case studies were used to further understand ASM performance. We examine one case from 17 April 2006 at Bratt's Lake, Saskatchewan, where geopotential height gradients appear to be related to an underestimation in the ASM in the UT/LS region. A second case, from 21 April 2006 at Trinidad Head, California, is a situation where the overprediction of ozone in the UT/LS region does not appear to be due to current dynamic conditions but seems to be related to uncertainty in the flow pattern and large differences in MLS observations upstream.
