The paper will explore the complex interplay between Memory, Trauma and Silence in Alex Michaelides’ The Silent Patient. The novel revolves around Alicia Benerson, a celebrated artist who looks like someone who has it all – an extremely successful career, a caring husband and an ideal life. But this dreamy life quickly comes crashing down when Alicia becomes mysteriously mute after allegedly murdering her husband. Theo Faber, a psychotherapist is determined to uncover the truth behind her silence. This haunting silence becomes a central focus of the narrative as the reader is left to ponder the reasons behind Alicia’s refusal to speak. Drawing from the Trauma theory, particularly insights from Scholars like Cathy Caruth and Judith Herman, the paper explores how traumatic experiences have an effect on the memory and affect the process of self-expression as well as Identity. The silence of Alicia Benerson in the novel serves as a very powerful form of communication as it conveys to the readers the depth of Alicia’s trauma and the complexity of the psychological turmoil taking place inside her. Through an analysis of Alicia’s diary entries and her artwork, the paper uncovers how nonverbal forms of communication become crucial outlets when speech fails. Furthermore, the fractured structure of the narrative itself shows how navigating through Traumatic experiences can be. Additionally, this paper also shows how psychotherapist Theo Fabers’s personal experience of childhood trauma and his role as a healer shapes the narrative. The novel also challenges conventional forms of psychological healing of those who have undergone traumatic experiences and the paper aims to highlight this aspect of mental health healing, the complexity of which is presented in the novel beautifully. In conclusion, The Silent Patient provides a compelling narrative that invites readers to reconsider the intersections between memory, silence, and trauma. This paper demonstrates the same through a textual analysis and aims to create a better understanding about mental health.

The 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan exposed the extreme vulnerability of women, who became primary targets of gendered violence amidst the chaos. Women suffered extensively—physically, psychologically, and emotionally—during the communal riots, facing abduction, rape, mutilation, and public humiliation. Many were driven to suicide in an attempt to preserve their families' honour and personal dignity. The traumatic impact of Partition on women was marked by the widespread infliction of patriarchal oppression, subjugation, and gender-based injustice, often at the hands of both strangers and their own male kin and community members. Women's bodies were transformed into battlegrounds, mutilated, violated, and impregnated with religious symbols, reducing them to instruments of political and religious aggression. The Partition did not merely divide a nation but unleashed a tide of bloodshed, destruction, and dehumanization—especially for women, who were relegated to the margins as the "other." While religious ideologies often exalted women as divine figures, the socio-political reality was one of brutal subordination and silencing within a deeply patriarchal order. This paper explores the entrenched patriarchal norms and the gendered violence experienced by women during the Partition. It examines the cruelty inflicted not only by male aggressors but also by institutional forces, including state authorities, who often dehumanized and objectified women even after their recovery.

The Main purpose of this paper is to analyze one of the components of classroom management, The sign of “Silence”. Saussure's semiotic analysis qualitative method was used to perceive the explicit message and analyze the latent meanings. The data validated based on the intertextual method is based on the text itself and the interpretations derived from the text. The theoretical results of this research led to the design of a binary model of "self-imposed/imposed" and "positive/negative" of silence. In the practical section, based on classroom biography, semantic codes of silence were extracted and decoded. The predicate and the referent were studied, recognized, internalized, and interpreted. As a result, the binary model of "affirmative-privative" and "incompetence -stubborn" was designed. The results of this paper indicate that the most frequent silence in the class was ‘inappropriate or empty silence’, which indicates the loud cry of the bitter reality of many wasted hours in classes that had no educational or educative consequence. Authorities, scholars, and teachers can receive the message of silence through theoretical study, educational action research and reflection, and by increasing teaching and transfer of meaning, and the predictability of classroom management. Another category of silence with "unknown" goals was also identified.

In spite of the ongoing discussion and emphasis on student voice, talk curriculum, and small group discussion (Barnitz 1994; Johnson & Johnson 1994; Barnes & Todd 1995; Johnston & Nicholls 1995; Johnson & Johnson 2000), most classroom language/discourse strategies remain rooted in Socratic premises. That is to say, official classroom discourse still tends to focus on the individual presentation and recitation of knowledge, as opposed to its shared exploration and examination. By disconnecting thinking from talking, Socratic-based language activities or strategies treat reasoning and language as objective and exclusive. While Socratic-based language activities present certain advantages when used as independent strategies, the authors of this article propose that the overwhelming effect of their exclusive use in the classroom is to discourage students from taking a more active and independent part in classroom discourse. The implication of this lack of serious participation, to their futures as adult members of a democratic society, is that students learn to let others examine issues, and make decisions on these, for them. In this essay, the authors describe five of the most common of these Socratic-based discourse strategies, namely: (1) socratic method; (2) radial discussion; (3) presentation/lecture; (4) debate; and (5) unstructured conversation. They offer an alternative discourse model, the Deliberative Cycle, outline the five components of this Cycle, and show how these components can help teachers facilitate a more open ended and shared discourse.
