In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, people's concerns about shortages and price increases are likely to trigger impulse buying behavior, which may have an impact on individuals' normal lives and social stability. This study investigates the impact of risk perception of epidemic on impulse buying behavior, the mediating role of anxiety and the moderating role of credibility between risk perception of epidemic and impulse buying behavior, in order to reveal the internal mechanism under the relationship between risk perception and impulse buying behavior.

In this project, I examine the role of cognitive reflection (that is the extent to which an individual is likely to suppress their spontaneous intuition and engage in higher order cognition) may explain this rise both in terms of attitudes and voting behaviour. To do this, I will field an original survey with a sample of approximately 1,000 respondents representative of the UK population. In doing so, I will avail of the cognitive reflection test (CRT) as a measure of cognitive reflection (Frederick, 2005) while measuring populist attitudes using an eight-item scale proposed Van Hauwaert and Van Kessel (2018) and measuring populist voting behaviour using the results of a conjoint analysis. The CRT is composed of three questions which are designed to prompt an intuitive but incorrect answer, whereas the correct answer demands more careful thinking. In designing the questions this way, it is possible to observe which mode of thinking an individual has used when attempting to solve the question. For example, A bat and a ball cost £1.10 in total. The bat costs £1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost? Here, the intuitive answer that comes to mind is £0.10. However, it takes a moment of reflection to realise that if this were true, the bat would cost £1.10 and together, the bat and ball would cost £1.20. Therefore, given the conditions set out in the question, the ball cannot cost £0.10 and it is up to the respondent to reason the correct answer of £0.05. For this survey I will ask respondents the CRT in a randomised order along with two decoy questions. Like the CRT, the decoy questions are also intended to prompt an intuitive answer from the respondent. However in contrast to the CRT, these intuitive responses are indeed correct. These decoy questions are used in additional robustness tests in lieu of the actual CRT scores as placebo. Once responses from the CRT (and decoys) are collected, I will code correct responses 1 and incorrect responses 0. In additional robustness checks, I will recode these 1 for all unintuitive responses, and 0 for all intuitive ones (thus excluding respondents who did not give any of these two responses). After the data has been coded, I will then aggregate the responses into a single measure of reflectiveness using an item response theory graded response model. Such a specification can account for differences in the difficulty associated with each item and thus construct a measure of reflectiveness as a latent variable. Measuring attitudes, the scale proposed by Van Hauwart and Van Kessel will be applied with respondents being asked to respond to each of the eight items on a five-point Likert scale (with an option to indicate “Don’t know”). Once this data are collected, I will combine these responses into a single measure of populism, using an item response theory graded response model, similar to that described above. On this constructed latent variable, I will estimate the marginal effect of a one-unit increase of the respondent’s CRT score using a series of OLS regressions with and without controls for the respondent’s demographic characteristics. To assess populist voting behaviour, I adopt the conjoint design first used by Bakker et al. (2021). In this design, respondents are faced with two hypothetical candidates with attributes randomly determined across a set of political relevant dimensions. Of particular interest for this study are the following dimensions and their associated attributes: i) anti-establishment sentiment, ii) people centrism, and iii) conflict/cooperation. These dimensions represent multiple facets of populism and can be used to assess its appeal. For each of these dimensions, there are two attributes: one populist and one non-populist. For each set of two attributes, one is randomly attributed with equal probability and independent of any other factors. In addition, a number of attributes associated with dimensions unrelated to populism are also presented with each candidate. These pertain to immigration, taxation, and personal background and will be presented (along with the populist dimensions) in a randomised order. Presented with two candidates, each with a full list of attributes as described above, the respondent is then asked from whom they would vote for in a hypothetical election between the two. From this, the respondent’s vote choice and the attributes associated with each candidate are recorded and used for analysis. I will repeat this process three times. Once these data are collected, I will run a series of OLS regressions to estimate the determinants of the linear probability of a respondent’s vote choice in this hypothetical scenario. In particular, I will estimate the interaction between a candidate’s populist attributes and the respondent’s CRT score. In doing so, I will be able to estimate the marginal component effect of populist attributes (anti-elitist, people-centric, and conflict seeking) on candidate vote choice at different levels of cognitive reflection. For robustness, I will do this with and without controlling for the remaining randomly determined attributes . Moreover, I will cluster the standard error of these estimates by the individual respondent.

Shoppers so far this holiday season look to be showing a desire for deals but also an inclination for some impulse spending. Spending has been "robust" so far this holiday shopping season, according to the National Retail Federation.The trade group is reiterating its forecast for holiday sales to rise by up to 4 percent.More than one-third of shoppers surveyed by the group had planned to make all their purchases on sale over the five days of Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday.That's similar to last year, and up from 11 percent in 2015.Shoppers so far are showing a desire for deals, but they also appear to be buying on a whim.The market research firm NPD Group says it's seeing more impulse spending and self-gifting.

We aim to understand how social distancing and self-isolation due to COVID-19 affects people with Parkinson’s and whether these effects are similar to those without Parkinson’s. In particular, some people with Parkinson’s report that they have problems stopping themselves from engaging in problematic behaviours (e.g. overeating, gambling; “impulse control behaviours” ) or making impulsive choices and we want to understand how these may be affected by social isolation. We are also interested in levels of anxiety and apathy (common in Parkinson’s) and the extent to which they have withdrawn socially. Some people with Parkinson’s experience impulse control behaviours (ICBs), such as problem gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, excessive eating and hobbyism. Approximately 10-15% of people with Parkinson’s have an ICB, which is thought to be as a direct result of dopamine agonist medication (taken to manage other Parkinson's symptoms).The cumulative incidence of ICBs in patients that take dopamine agonists could be as high as 51%, and in patients that do not take dopamine agonists prevalence (12.4%) is still higher than in the general population (1.1-1.6%). We want to understand how ICB's may be affected by social isolation due to COVID-19. Of course, due to the unique nature of the pandemic, these effects have not been studied previously. There is evidence to suggest that anxiety has an effect on impulsivity and ICBs. During the current situation (COVID-19 and social isolation), anxiety may be higher than normal, and therefore ICBs may be affected. This study will also look at the effect of social isolation and COVID-19 on people without Parkinson's. In addition, to being of particular interest in the current pandemic, we anticipate that the findings will lead to a greater understanding of the factors that may underlie control of impulsive behaviours, anxiety and social interaction in people with Parkinson’s. More broadly, this is a unique opportunity to gain understanding as to the relationship between social withdrawal and well-being in Parkinson's.    During the past sixty years, scientists have spent around a hundred billion dollars in an attempt to develop tritium thermonuclear energy but were unsuccessful in achieving stable thermonuclear reactions. Current plans are to finally design an expensive workable industrial installation, which possibly will only begin to produce electric energy after another 15 – 20 years and which will cost tens of billions of US dollars. Even if the new designs were viable, they are economically unfeasible. Currently, Tritium is used for fusion ignition by tritium thermonuclear reaction (T+D) because it has the lowest temperature (≈100 million degree) in contrast to deuterium thermonuclear reaction (D+D) which has afusion ignition temperature 50 - 100 times hotter. This paper demonstrates that because tritium fuel is very expensive ($30,000/gram and more), the electricity generated by the tritium thermonuclear reactor will cost (≈ $1/kwh), at least 10 times more than conventional sources of energy (≈ $0.1/kwh, 2015). Hundreds of billions of dollars were spent in vain over sixty years for R&D of the tritium fusion. It is the costliest mistake in the history of science! Research and Development (R&D) of huge very expensive tritium fusion installations should be abandoned and in its stead, develop viable and economically feasible inexpensive small reactors using deuterium fuel and high temperatures. That decreases the fuel cost by 30,000 times. Viable designs of small thermonuclear reactions have been offered by senior author. In an [7] , analysis of the problems with the various configurations of the new small and cheap fusion reactors are detailed.

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center conducted a series of carefully controlled field experiments to quantify the aboveground environments created by the detonation of surface and nearsurface bare-charge explosives in or on three very different soil backfills. The experiments provided blast pressure, soil stress, and impulse data for each soil type. To measure the aboveground impulse produced by the combined airblast and soil debris, an impulse measurement device was designed, fabricated, and calibrated for use in the field experiments. Results of these experiments are documented, along with initial conclusions regarding the complex loadings that would be applied to an aboveground structure.

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Background: A key limitation of conventional ultrasound (US) includes poor differentiation of benign from malignant thyroid nodules. Contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) could provide better characterization of focal thyroid nodules; however, no studies have compared their efficacies. Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of conventional US,CEUS, ARFI, and their combined use in differentiating focal solid thyroid nodules. Methods: One-hundred-forty-six Chinese patients with 175 thyroid nodules (119 benign and 56 malignant) were prospectively enrolled. Each patients underwent conventional US, CEUS and ARFI, respectively. The diagnostic performance of the conventional US, CEUS, ARFI, combined use of either CEUS or ARFI and combined use of the three modalities were assessed and compared using Pathological diagnosis (histological/cytological) as the reference method. Results: There were no significant differences between individual groups (CEUS vs US, P = 0.279, ARFI vs US, P = 0.372, CEUS vs ARFI, P = 0.849), combined use of US and CEUS or combined use of US and ARFI yielded significant difference compared to US. (combination of US & CEUS vs US, P = 0.021; combination of US & ARFI vs US, P = 0.036). The combination of three modalities significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy compared with either combination of conventional US and CEUS or combination of conventional US and ARFI (P = 0.045 and P  = 0.027, respectively). Conclusions: CEUS and ARFI can be used as an additional tool in the diagnostic work up of thyroid nodules. The combination of CEUS with ARFI can significantly improve the diagnostic accuracy.

A torsional impulse balance has been developed as a new diagnostic tool to study fundamental processes in laser-surface interactions. Of particular interest are the forces due to processes of laser ablation. With respect to the transfer of momentum, direct measurements of the transient forces can lead to a better understanding and characterization of the efficiency of the impulse that is possible under different configurations. The impulse balance has been designed and tested with a robust calibration system to measure impulsive forces with resolution as low as several nano-Newton-seconds. Initial results of impulses due to ablation from an Nd:YAG laser (532nm) on various metals and other materials are presented.

Our objective is to develop an engine with high efficiency, and specific impulse which can be varied over more than an order of magnitude to match the requirements of efficient spacecraft propulsion in the constant momentum propulsion regime. Laser ablation propulsion uniquely offers an almost arbitrarily large range of exhaust velocity, since it depends only on incident laser intensity. We have shown that thrust efficiency remains good over the specific impulse range 150 to 3,200 seconds. Considering a laser ablation propulsion device as an electric thruster, use of energetic ablation fuels can give thrust electrical efficiency greater than unity at the bottom of this Isp range. In our laser plasma thrusters (LPT's), we have demonstrated specific impulse which can be varied over a factor-of-15, from 200 to 3000 seconds to match the velocity profile in a mission. The corresponding thrust efficiency varies from 165% to 40%. The micro-LPT product has a 0.1 - 10 mN thrust range. After reviewing the science basis and performance of the existing devices, we describe the unique capabilities predicted for the LPT technology when it is scaled to the 1N thrust level. This scaling permits taking full advantage of the technology's inherent advantages in thrust/power ratio (up to 1.35N/kW), thrust efficiency and thrust density (5,000 to 350,000N/m2). However, the most important capability of the macro-LPT design is variable Isp for optimally-efficient, constant-momentum flights. Claims made for the macro-LPT are based on measured performance of our millisecond and nanosecond-pulse LPT devices, and the anticipated performance of a revolutionary liquid ablation fuel.

High-purity water is the dielectric of choice for most pulsed-power machines. Increasing the electrical breakdown strength of high-purity water is one of the principle goals for pulsed power, because the energy density stored in the water increases as the square of the electric field. This paper concentrates on the impulse breakdown strength for long-stress times (i.e., greater than 65 microseconds). Previous work at Dahlgren has shown that the breakdown strength is independent of stress time in this regime. Our hypothesis is that impurities control the breakdown behavior of nominally high-purity water. Specifically, we will present experimental data that shows the use of filtration methods designed to remove organic material and particulates (which don't affect the resistivity of water), improves the breakdown strength. Earlier results that showed a time variation for improvements in breakdown strength will be explained. An experimental design to achieve even greater improvements in breakdown strength will be presented.

The impulse toward comedy in the poetry of Canadian author Margaret Atwood occurs as a by-product of an interaction between scripted text and performing reader. Reading, then, may be profitably viewed as a rehearsal for both. In the classroom, this stylistic approach to Atwood's poetry can be emphasized over thematic analysis. In her poetry, parentheses act as textually defined cues for comedy. Additionally, the reader specifies the exact voicing for the persona, opening up the text's potential for comic interpretation. Readers may use rate, pitch, stress, and vocal tone to highlight comic attitudes. Many of Atwood's poems allow the possibility of sounding sarcastic, manipulative, condescending, and witty. The implications for Atwood's canon are: (1) that there may be more similarities than initially realized between poetic and narrative texts; (2) that Atwood's poems benefit from comic interpretations; and (3) that a comic rendering of Atwood's poems alters and reshapes the voice of personae. As a result of the enlarged vocal dimension, the reader-text relationship is changed. A rehearsal of comic impulses enlarges Atwood's poetic potential. Teaching Turkish as a foreign language (TTFL) has recently gained much importance in modern life. For some reason, a large number of people and students with dissimilar background come from other countries so as to start off a new life primarily in Istanbul and/or many other cities in Turkey. Many of whom need to ensure their arrival and long term accommodations by visiting a language center. Some language institutes and foreign language centers, therefore have been trying to meet these needs and give a certificate in accordance with European language portfolio (ELP) levels. Through this paper it was attempted to clarify some certain questions showing up in this teaching performance of this outstanding language "Turkish": "What type of challenges foreign students face in Turkish courses and how language teachers/instructors help them to get through these problems, what activities teachers carry out in the classroom and what materials and games they use in courses." This paper reports the findings of a study aiming to reveal what mistakes the students make while learning their first, second or even more foreign languages and this study evaluates them through the more frequently used language teaching methods. Tests were conducted to measure the impulse and pressure characteristics of Detasheet L explosive. Results of these tests show a maximum detonation velocity of 7.6 mm/micro sec, a minimum detonation thickness of 6 mils, a peak pressure in direct contact with silica phenolic (simulated by doped epoxy) of about 80 kbar, and a specific impulse of 755 plus or minus 15 taps/ mil.

A time-resolved impulse gage was developed to provide data to fill the gap between the longest duration stress gages (approximately 5 microsec max.) and the fastest of the recoil gages (approximately 50 microsec min.). The characteristics of the new gage include: impulse range 0.5 to 20 ktaps, risetime 10-15 microsec, read time 300-1500 microsec, accuracy + or - 10%, electrical output 1.32 volt/ktap. The gage was specifically developed to record the pressure-time history of 'tamped' UGT experiments, where metallic vapors produced by rapid energy deposition on a specimen material are not free to expand indefinitely, but are trapped in a gap between the specimen surface and a low Z material through which the radiation has passed. The gage measures both 'prompt' impulse from the initial rapid expansion of the vapors and the 'late-time' impulse from the pressure created within the gap. The gage exhibits good linearity, high electrical output, and a wide dynamic range. Other utilizations of the gage besides UGT experimentation include electron-beam and laser effects studies. The HIGAD test bed described in this report consists of a four barrel, GAU-8/A class, 30-mm Gatling type weapon with associated feeder and dual rate drive, and a microprocessor-controlled, hydraulically-operated recoil attenuation system. This recoil system is referred to as FORC(Force Optimized Recoil Control) and is used for the 360 shot-per-minute (spm) rate. A second recoil system is used for the higher rate of 720 spm. This system is a passive low force recoil system. Complete interface requirements were established through many joint meetings between General Electric, Honeywell, and ARRADCOM. The resulting test program has demonstrated flawless gun system performance in the HIGAD test bed. A total of 161 rounds were fired for set-up and checkout purposes at the General Electric Firing Range prior to delivery to ARRADCOM. At Rock Island, 972 rounds were accumulated on the gun system during evaluation of the FORC recoil system.

The time-domain parabolic equation (TDPE) model, developed by Collins, is a broadband, range-dependent, acoustic propagation code. TDPE has the capability of modeling high-angle acoustic propagation and of accounting for attenuation in sediments, which are advances over an earlier time-domain formulation of PE. The high-angle capability is achieved by evaluating Pade series coefficients in the PE operator instead of Taylor series coefficients, which were used in the initial formulation of PE. The TDPE model is shown to accurately model measured ocean impulse response in a near-field shallow water ocean environment. Ocean impulse response functions are measured by cross- correlating the source signature of a 20 to 150 Hz swept frequency signal with the signals received on a vertical line array. The autocorrelation of the swept signal is the input source pulse for TDPE. Ocean-bottom parameters are developed from Deep Sea Drilling Project sites near the experimental area. The capability of TDPE to model high-angle (70-75 deg) multipath propagation is established. TDPE results are compared to results from the fast field algorithm, SAFARI.

A FORTRAN program, published in the open literature, for the design of linear phase finite impulse response digital filters has been installed on the BRL CDC computer. Portions of this program have been extracted and combined to form a subroutine for filter design. Ancillary subroutines have been developed to assist in the formulation of filter design parameters. A subroutine for convolution of data with digital filters of finite odd length has also been written.

During March 1980 a subsurface impulse radar system was successfully used on board a U.S. Coast Guard cutter to measure brash ice thickness in the Great Lakes. Manual ice thickness measurements were made in the test area to calibrate the radar data and to determine radar range settings. Radar-collected data were recorded on magnetic tape and later played back to a graphic recorder for interpretation. Most of the usable data were collected when the ship's speed was 3-4 knots. The split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique has been adapted to measure the dynamic response of soil to impulse loads. The SHPB technique is relatively simple and can significantly extend the range of stresses and strain- rates that can be applied beyond the capabilities of current equipment used for dynamic laboratory soil investigations. This capability will assist in satisfying the demand for soil property data which more closely reflects environments related to weapon effects problems. The various considerations involved in designing an SHPB experiment and evaluating the data with soil as a specimen are discussed in detail. Soils have several characteristics which complicate their use as specimens in an SHPB experiment: low wave speeds, nonlinear hysteretic behavior, and low unconfined compressive strength compared to the applied loads. Insight is provided as to how these factors affect experimental accuracy and data reliability. It has been shown herein that the assumption necessary to obtain meaningful data from an SHPB experiment can be satisfied when using compacted soil specimens constrained to a nearly uniaxial strain state. Also the ability to replicate experimental results has been established. In addition, the dynamic soil stress-strain response was found to be governed principally by the initial gas porosity of the specimen and no strain-rate dependency was exhibited at strains less than the initial gas porosity. A compliment of stress-strain curves are presented for specimens prepared at several combinations of moisture and density.

Although it is known that continuous noise underwater may be damaging to human hearing, little research has been done on the influence of impulse noise underwater on hearing in man. NEDU evaluated the effect of an impulse noise producing stud gun, the Ramset 200 HD gun-powder actuated underwater tool, on the hearing in five U.S. Navy divers. Using heavy gun-powder loads and firing 1148 shots underwater into 1/2 thick steel plates, the average peak sound pressure level (SPL) underwater was 185.4 dB. The in-air equivalent peak SPL was 150.4 dB. In summary, firing up to 40 shots consecutively in an open-water, unconfined space did not demonstrate any acoustic injury to the diver.

An adaptive blade control algorithm for helicopter vibration reduction is developed as an application of an impulse response control method. The method is based on an impulse response formulation which is applicable to any linear system with periodic dynamics. In the investigation of adaptive helicopter vibration control presented, a vertical-axis-only plant is simulated by a model composed of an impulse response matrix and an uncontrolled vibration vector. The adaptive control is implemented by a regulator composed of an estimator and a controller. The model parameters are identified by either Kalman or batch weighted least squares (WLS) filtering in either global or local form. The resulting estimates are used in an optimal control law obtained by the minimization of a constrained, single-step, quadratic performance function. Four control laws are derived: global certainty-equivalent, local certainty equivalent, global cautious, and local cautious. The filters derived are examined in open loop simulations to determine their identification capabilities independent of the control feedback. Two levels of open loop control variation are used to evaluate estimation performance with constant and time-varying plants. The Kalman filters are found to produce lower estimate errors than the WLS filters. (jhd)

Exposure to high intensity impulse noise produced by modern military weapons is known to be hazardous to hearing. Hearing protection is required; however, there is no generally accepted theoretical way to predict whether protection will be adequate for the highest noise levels. This had led us to empirically determine the safe limits of exposure to impulse noise when hearing protection is used by exposing human volunteers under controlled conditions. Over the past 5 years, a series of studies has been conducted to determine the maximum safe exposure to high intensity freefield impulse noise. An exposure was considered to be safe if it produced only a small temporary threshold shift (TTS 25 dB) in a small percentage of the volunteers exposed. Three different impulses were used with A-durations of 0.8, 1.4, and 2.9 ms. Both the level and number of impulses were varied to find the maximum tolerable exposure for combinations of these parameters. The peak sound pressure levels ranged up to 196 dB. The number of impulses was varied from 6 to 100. Approximately 60 volunteers were exposed to each type of impulse, allowing high confidence estimates of the exposures which would produce no significant TTS in 95 percent of the exposed population. The hearing protection used was an ear muff which had been modified to simulate a poor fitting protector. The results of these studies indicated that even with a relatively poor hearing protector, combinations of level and number of impulses which far exceed our currently accepted exposure limits could be tolerated by 95 percent of the volunteers.

The results of an investigation of the volt-second characteristics of the electric breakdown of air and water vapor in a nonhomogeneous electric field at pressures of up to 40 atmospheres for a surge voltage effect time of from 0. 0000002 to 0.000002 s are presented.

Seventy-six subjects were exposed to single impulse noises produced by two small shoulder-fired rockets, and TTS2 (temporary threshold shift) was compared with the Committee on Hearing, Bioacoustics, and Biomechanics (CHABA) limits. The single impulse, 95% protection, and grazing incidence correction factors of the CHABA damage-risk criterion were validated. Grazing-incidence shock waves produced comparable results when they arrived at the ear from the front and from the rear.
