1ERIC ED452337: Apart And A Part: The Development Of Individual And Group Identity Of Asian American College Students.

By

This study explored the identity development of Asian American college students, especially in relation to the simultaneous development of individual and group identity. It examined how second-generation Asian Americans interpreted their evolving sense of self in relation to race/ethnicity and how their racial/ethnic identity affected their college experience. This study was conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles. Students completed individual interviews that encouraged introspection and focused on how individuals make sense of various academic and social experiences. Overall, students struggled to find balance between their inner and social selves. Students' racial/ethnic perspectives affected how they interpreted reality. They had to deal with preconceived notions about their group identity, which affected their struggle with how they defined Asian American identity and their place in it. Tension between group affiliation and individuality affected both college choice and academic major selection because students did not want to be categorized by race/ethnicity. Connection at some level with their racial/ethnic identity helped students' sense of self in the larger context. Peer groups were important because the dialogue between friends reinforced or challenged notions of the self. Students placed high value on connecting with other Asian Americans in a social context because of the unspoken level of understanding. (Contains 34 references.) (SM)

2ERIC EJ936402: The Development Of Vocational Calling, Identity, And Faith In College Students: A Preliminary Study Of The Impact Of Study Abroad

By

Living and learning in another country, primary conditions of the study abroad experience, are commonly associated with two fundamental outcomes. The first outcome is an increase in "external" connections, manifested through an increased ability to converse in another language and an increased understanding and sensitivity to another culture. The second outcome is an "internal" redirection, a deepening sense of identity and self-awareness. Study abroad experiences and their relationship to external educational goals have been studied extensively in terms of its effects on enhancing foreign language acquisition as well as cultural awareness and intercultural relationships. In contrast, research addressing higher education goals associated with internal effects have not yet been fully explored in terms of their connection to study abroad experiences. This study focuses on several elements of personal growth and internal development that are particularly salient during the college years. The study is a response to the call for greater understanding of the interior aspects of student development, as bound to significant experiences in the life of the college student, particularly the increasingly popular experience of study abroad. The authors' approach to gaining this understanding is to provide empirical evidence of the ways in which an international living and learning experience significantly enhances college student development in the areas of identity, faith, and vocational calling. Accordingly, their research hypothesis is that students who participate in study abroad programs experience significantly greater changes in faith, vocational calling, and identity development than do students who do not participate in such programs. Their findings suggest that many of these changes, in some fashion, do occur. Moreover, the findings suggest that the application of faith to daily living and decision-making increased for students who studied abroad and decreased for those students who did not study abroad. Their research demonstrates some of the potential effects of study abroad on identity development. (Contains 4 tables.)

3Understanding The Interaction Of Intrapersonal And Interpersonal Dynamics: A Study Of Identity Development Among Highly Able College Students

By

Erikson’s (1959,1968) concept of fidelity, encompassing the idea of staying loyal to oneself and significant individuals in one’s life, presents a reflective lens through which to examine the psychological needs of individuals with gifts and talents (IWGT). As IWGT navigate the challenges of intellectual and social development, they may encounter a distinctive set of hurdles related to their advanced intellectual abilities, including experiences such as boredom, underachievement, and social isolation (Gallagher, 2008). Furthermore, their journey becomes even more complex as they try to reconcile their extraordinary intellectual aptitude with their social and emotional demands, a complexity eloquently explored by Gross (1994). In an era where educational institutions are, unfortunately, facing challenges in prioritizing the nurturing of students’ social-emotional skills (Abrams, 2023), it becomes increasingly crucial to advocate for holistic approaches that encompass both intellectual and emotional facets, thereby better supporting the psychosocial development leading to well-being and identity achievement of IWGT. Understanding identity development among IWGT holds the potential to empower its stakeholders in providing crucial support to these students as they embark on a path of self-discovery and self-actualization. While several intrapersonal factors have emerged as pivotal determinants of Eriksonian identity formation, constructs such as hope and purpose drive performance to translate goals to success (Bronk et al., 2018; Colla et al., 2022). These dimensions, shaped by an individual’s experiences, beliefs, and values, can play a pivotal role in guiding one’s pursuit of Eriksonian fidelity. Similarly, the interpersonal dimension representing the environment, particularly within educational and family settings, exerts an influence on identity formation. A positive environment can provide appropriate resources, challenges, and support for the identity formation of the IWGT. Early adulthood is a phase when the sense of identity of an individual undergoes a remarkable transformation (Arnett, 2000), which is shaped by the interaction between the person and experiences in the environment cultivated since the formative years. This phase is a time of exploration, growth, and discovery – when the individual begins understanding who they are and what they want from life (Eriksson et al., 2020). And once they find their footing, they settle into a pattern that feels uniquely our own. This study aims to provide an opportunity to assess how intrapersonal factors (hope, purpose, curiosity and exploration) and interpersonal factors (school environment, family environment) influence their identity development, both distinctly and concurrently. The research questions guiding this study are: 1. What is the relationship between intrapersonal factors (indicated by hope, purpose, curiosity and exploration) and identity development among IWGT? 2. What is the relationship between interpersonal factors (indicated by school environment and family environment) and identity development among IWGT? 3. How is the interaction between the intrapersonal factors and the interpersonal factors associated with identity development among IWGT?

4ERIC ED430492: Space To Grow: Creating An Ecology Model Of Bi- And Multiracial Identity Development In College Students.

By

This study examined how campus peer culture influences the ways in which multiracial students make meaning of their racial identity, and applies Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological model of cognitive development to analyze elements in the college environment that stimulate or inhibit identity development. Discussion of the situation of multiracial students in the context of student development and identity development theory is followed by explanation of the model used in this study, which involves microsystems, mesosystems, exosystems, and macrosystems. The study focused on perceptions of 24 students at three undergraduate-focused institutions and had four main components: individual interviews with participants; written responses by participants; a focus group of three or four students per campus; and analysis of and archival data about each campus concerning multiracial issues. Data were organized according to Bronfenbrenner's ecology model. A major theme that emerged was the meaning and importance that students attached to finding a space to fit in on campus. Results are interpreted in terms of the kinds of spaces, or microsystems, students occupied on campus and how these microsystems interacted to create the mesosystem of peer culture and the ecology of multiracial identity development. 5ERIC EJ891461: The Impact Of Short-Term Study Abroad On The Identity Development Of College Students With Learning Disabilities And/or AD/HD

By

This article explores the identity changes that college students with learning disability (LD) and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) report after participating in a short-term study abroad program. The reflections of thirteen short-term study abroad participants, all of whom have been diagnosed with LD and/or AD/HD are presented. Particular attention is focused on the ways in which these identity changes impacted the students as learners and the factors unique to short-term study abroad that facilitated those identity changes. It concludes by proposing a model of identity development for students with LD and/or AD/HD and recommends methods for greater inclusion of students with LD and/or AD/HD in short-term study abroad programs. The authors hope that their findings will help to reframe notions about the ability and adaptability of students with LD and/or AD/HD, lower current barriers to participation in study abroad for students with LD and/or AD/HD, and contribute to the dynamic discussion currently underway about study abroad and student outcomes. 6ERIC ED424500: Effects Of Perceived Racism And Sexism On Psychological Well Being And The Moderating Effects Of Identity Development Among African And European American College Students.

By

The combined and singular effects of racism and sexism on African American females (AAF), males (AAM), and European American females (EAF) are examined with identity development as a moderator of psychological well being. Samples of AAF, AAM, EAF and a control group of European American Males (EAM) completed counterbalanced instruments that measured perceived frequency and effect of racism and sexism; identity development, generic hassles, psychological symptoms, and self-esteem. After partialling out generic hassles, a series of multiple regression analyses tested the relationships among these remaining variables. For AAFs, singular and combined effect and frequency of racism and sexism on psychological symptoms and self-esteem were nonsignificant. For AAMs and EAFs, effect (but not frequency) of racism and sexism, respectively, on psychological symptoms (but not self-esteem) were significant. Identity development as a moderator between racist and sexist events and psychological well being was nonsignificant. Although AAFs reported higher frequency of racist and sexist events, these events were not linked to their psychological well being. AAFs reported the highest number of psychological symptoms, whereas AAMs reported the lowest number. These results, their implications for counseling psychology, and recommendations for future research are discussed. (EMK)

3Note-Books of Samuel Butler

By

Book's cover

Early in his life Samuel Butler began to carry a note-book and to write down in it anything he wanted to remember; it might be something he heard some one say, more commonly it was something he said himself. In one of these notes he gives a reason for making them:

“One’s thoughts fly so fast that one must shoot them; it is no use trying to put salt on their tails.”

So he bagged as many as he could hit and preserved them, re-written on loose sheets of paper which constituted a sort of museum stored with the wise, beautiful, and strange creatures that were continually winging their way across the field of his vision. As he became a more expert marksman his collection increased and his museum grew so crowded that he wanted a catalogue. In 1874 he started an index, and this led to his reconsidering the notes, destroying those that he remembered having used in his published books and re-writing the remainder. The re-writing shortened some but it lengthened others and suggested so many new ones that the index was soon of little use and there seemed to be no finality about it. In 1891 he attached the problem afresh and made it a rule to spend an hour every morning re-editing his notes and keeping his index up to date. At his death, in 1902, he left five bound volumes, with the contents dated and indexed, about 225 pages of closely written sermon paper to each volume, and more than enough unbound and unindexed sheets to made a sixth volume of equal size. - Summary by Henry Festing Jones

6Year When Stardust Fell

By

Book's cover

The story of The Year When Stardust Fell is not a story of the distant future or of the remote past. It is not a story of a never-never land where fantastic happenings take place daily. It is a story of my town and yours, of people like you and me and the mayor in townhall, his sheriff on the corner, and the professor in the university—a story that happens no later than tomorrow. It is the portrayal of the unending conflict between ignorance and superstition on one hand, and knowledge and cultural enlightenment on the other as they come into conflict with each other during an unprecedented disaster brought on by the forces of nature. - Summary by The Author

9Keep-Well Stories for Little Folks

By

Book's cover

"The child's mind dwells constantly in the realm of imagination; dry facts are too prosaic to enter this realm. The "Land of Story Books" is the most fascinating of all lands, and therefore the Author has endeavored to weave hygienic facts into stories that will appeal to the child's imagination. She believes the truths of hygienic living and habits in the stories will "creep up on the blind side," so to speak, and impress themselves upon the young mind." -from the Foreword

This book was published in 1916, and therefore represents what was then known of the science of health and hygiene (and, of course, the social morés of the time). Listeners will find that, while some of these stories have not aged well, others reflect an accurate understanding of the body, and all have a certain charm. - Summary by Devorah Allen

11Malaria: A Neglected Factor in the History of Greece and Rome

By

This short book has the objective of showing how important it is to stamp out malaria as soon as possible. Unlike a plague that suddenly takes it victims and leaves its survivors, malaria is a debilitating infection. It seizes all, fit and unfit alike, gradually lessening the general vitality until, in some cases, it has exterminated the people among whom it has become endemic. Extensive evidence has been compiled and summarised from consultation with medical authorities, antique literature, and historical sources to show how this insidious disease has undermined the integrity of a pair of ancient empires, and ultimately became a factor in their downfall. - Summary by Leon Harvey

12Malaria in Greek History

By

This book is an attempt to correct and develop the theory proposed tentatively in the little work Malaria. Put briefly, this theory is as follows. In the struggle for existence man has competed, not only with his fellow-men, but also with wild animals and disease- parasites. The fight against beasts was decided long before the historic period, but parasites have always been, and still are, formidable opponents. Whole tribes have been wiped out by plague, kala-azar and measles; and even when the disease-parasite does not win such a decisive victory, it often weakens a nation so much that the latter falls an easy victim to its healthier neighbours. This volume will show how malaria played a part in the decline of the ancient Greeks, along with statistics presented from the Greek Anti Malarial League, and evaluation of malarial literature. But more important, this is what happens to a small, college town caught up in such disaster. How quickly do its people dispense with their men of science and turn to superstition and mob rule for hope of survival? - Summary by The Author

Cast of Characters:
Narration: Larry Wilson
Ken Maddox: ToddHW
Professor Henry Maddox, bystander: James R. 18Gospel According to St. Mark, Volume 1

      By

Bible students and Bible readers have long felt the necessity for some commentary which should aim simply and solely at helping the spiritual life of those who use it. The Religious Tract Society is now producing a series of volumes designed to fill this gap. In every case the aim has been so to comment upon the words of Holy Scripture as to help the spiritual life of the reader. There has, of course, been some treatment of perplexing passages and a steady attempt to draw out the general character as well as the particular lessons of each book. - Summary by Series Preface
