9Waste Management Practices In Selected Poultry Farms And Its Effect On The Environment And Human Health In Makurdi, Nigeria

The poultry industry produces large amounts of waste that include solid waste and wastewater. These waste if not properly disposed can be risky to the environment and humans through the spread of diseases and pollution of soil and groundwater. The investigation to determine poultry waste management practices and its effect on the environment and human health was carried out in Makurdi. Benue State. The study was conducted from October to December 2017. A structured questionnaire was administered to 20 randomly selected poultry farmers and 20 neighbours in the study area by one on one interview and observation of the environment. Data collected from the questionnaires were analysed using descriptive statistics. The major poultry waste generated by the farms was faecal waste (50%) with about 50% of the respondents getting 25 bags or more of waste after clearance of poultry houses. There was no significant difference (P=0.056) between the flock size and the number of bags gotten from clearance of the litter. About (40%) of the farms sell their poultry waste immediately after clearing their farms while 30% applied theirs directly to nearby farm lands. The challenges in disposing of poultry waste were shortage of labour (45%) and lack of dumping sites (25%). The major complaint about poultry farms by neighbours living around the farms was bad odour (60%). It was observed that improper handling of poultry production waste from start to finish could lead to environmental and health hazards with 60% of the respondents reported being sick with signs of respiratory problems and 40% had digestive problems. Eighty-five (85%) percent of the farmers indicated that improper disposal of litter causes surface water contamination while all (100%) the farmers agreed that poultry waste causes air pollution. It was concluded that waste management by poultry farmers in the study area was inefficient. There is a need for further studies to assess the magnitude of the risk posed by poor poultry waste management practices to the environment, livestock and human health.

Cleaner production is a practical method that is implemented in an organization to reduce the damages and risks towards humans and environment. CP promotes the concept of sustainable development in which we consider economy and environment both together. Production in which we don’t consider impacts on human health and environment always create some major problems or issues. To create more sustainable methods of production, there needs to be a shift in attitudes and behavior towards sustainable development or pollution free production. Cleaner production focuses on a new way about processes, products and services to find better way to minimize the impacts on human health and environment. Companies/ organizations that follow the concept of sustainable development in their production always gain the confidence of public and improve the public image towards them. Moreover, CP improves the company performance, Makes companies more profitable and competitive and reduces the overall emission level of pollutants into the air, water and soil and maximizes the product output.

20IDENTIFICATION OF IMPACTS AND HUMAN HEALTH RISKS PRODUCED BY THE PRESENCE OF PESTICIDES IN THE ENVIRONMENT II. HUMAN HEALTH RISKS GENERATED BY THE PRESENCE OF PESTICIDES IN PLANT PRODUCTS – A Review

By

The risk to human health generated by the consumption of fruits and vegetables containing pesticide residues is evaluated applying the method recommended by the United State Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), taking strawberries, apples, lettuce and potatoes for evaluation. In the case of the USEPA method, several age categories of consumers were considered, from 3 years to over 75 years in the acute case, and from 18 years to over 75 years age categories in the chronic case. The results showed that no risks to significant human health were identified. According to the results, it was found that most of the pesticides taken into account do not pose a risk to the population, except for a few cases in which the short-term and long-term evaluation values exceeded the limits at which the pesticides pose a risk to the population represented by children (especially those that have exceeded the maximum allowed residual limit).

Including H.R. 2840, A Bill To Amend The Public Health Service Act To Reduce Human Exposure To Lead In Residences, Schools For Young Children, And Day Care Centers, Including Exposure To Lead In Drinking Water.

By

On April 25, 1991, a hearing examined the problem of lead poisoning and reviewed the actions taken by the Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies to address the problem. Many of those who gave testimony considered the actions to be inadequate. The detrimental effects of lead on human health, and especially children's health and development, were discussed. Paint and drinking water were identified as major sources of lead in the environment. On July 26, 1991, the subcommittee met again to hear testimony concerning H.R. 2840, a bill to amend the Public Health Service Act to reduce human exposure to lead in residences, schools for young children, and day care centers. The text of the bill is included in the document. During the course of the two hearings, testimony and prepared statements were received from at least 26 individuals and representatives of institutions and organizations concerned about lead poisoning. 23ERIC ED203769: Report Of The Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee To The Secretary, Department Of Health And Human Services. Volume V: Educational Environment Technical Panel.

By

Part 5 of a seven-volume report made by Graduate Medical Educational Advisory Committee (GMENAC) on the relationship between the education environment and specialty and subspecialty career choices is presented. After background information, Section 2 examines such conceptual and methodological issues as boundaries of the educational environment, specialty preferences vs. specialty choices vs. specialty attainment, timing of specialty preference formation and choice, aggregating or grouping specialties, input-output analyses, and the interrelationships among specialty and other career choices. In a third section on physician specialty choice literature (does it indicate possible mechanisms for modifying specialty distribution via the educational environment?) admission/student characteristics and institutional environment influences are discussed. The final section offers several recommendations such as: the applicant pool must be broadened with regard to students' individual characteristics and to reduce the financial barriers to medical education which limit diversity; undergraduate medical education must be broad-based; the first year of graduate medical education should be a broad-based clinical experience to serve as the foundation for further specialty training; and programs of loans and scholarships should be expanded. Extensive references are provided. (LC)

27Chapter 10 One Medicine? - Advocating (Inter)disciplinarity At The Interfaces Of Animal Health, Human Health, And The Environment

This chapter discusses the recent emergence of advocacy for 'One Health' (OH): the idea that greater interdisciplinarity across the domains of human and animal health research, clinical practice and policy is essential for addressing contemporary problems such as zoonotic disease, food safety, cancer and drug development. Over the past decade, the language of OH has been taken up by increasingly prominent actors in global health and biomedicine, including funders, international agencies and pharmaceutical companies; however, there has been a long history of veterinary led advocacy for similar ideas since the late 19th century. This longer history raises an immediate question: given that ideas of collaboration and convergence between human and veterinary medicine have been being advanced for such a long time, why has OH come to the fore at this particular point in time? This chapter analyses the emergence and growth of OH, following the key actors, events, disciplines, and agendas that have contributed to its increasing popularity, while tracing its origins in the histories of animal health, global development, and infectious disease. Using bibliometrics of key OH terms in academic journals, alongside qualitative analysis of academic, policy, and online documents, this chapter shows that while OH has been adopted by institutions across human and animal health, it is predominantly used by scientists publishing in veterinary science journals. This raises questions about the extent to which OH is interdisciplinary, to which actors and in which contexts: to what extent is it a 'top-down' or 'bottom-up; version of interdisciplinarity? The implications of these findings in the broader context of agenda-building across the life and environmental sciences of the early 21st century are then discussed.

Excessive use of these agrochemicals often exerts toxic effects and imposes acute risks on human health and the surrounding environment. Importantly, they have negative impacts on the farmers during agricultural practice without proper safety measures. When a human comes in contact with these toxic chemicals due to leaching and drifting causes serious health hazards including diabetes, reproductive disorders, neurological dysfunction, cancer, and respiratory diseases. In this paper, we discussed the benefits and adverse effects of agrochemicals on humans and the ecology. Moreover, we also discussed some important remedial measures to reduce the toxic effects in farming. We have mentioned recent state-of-art nanotechnology techniques to improve agricultural research. This paper will give new insights into current farming strategies by which farmers will be able to decrease the application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. 37Interview With Katina Czyczelis About Why Veganism Is Essential For The Animals, Human Health, The Environment, And World Peace

By

This week, I am pleased to present my interview with Katina Czyczelis, who is a vegan advocate, business manager, and musician living in Australia. An essay that Katina wrote about veganism was included in an anthology titled Vegan Voices: Essays by Inspiring Changemakers, edited by Joanne Kong, which was published in 2021. In this interview, Katina tells me her story of becoming vegan, makes the case for ethical veganism, and responds to many of the excuses that people commonly make against going vegan. We also discuss why veganism is essential in order to achieve a peaceful, healthy, and fair world. At the end of the show, we'll listen to the piano song, "Into the Sunrise", by Will Tuttle.

40Environmental Health Sourcebook : Basic Consumer Health Information About The Environment And Its Effect On Human Health, Including The Effects Of Air Pollution, Water Pollution, Hazardous Chemicals, Food Hazards, Radiation Hazards, Biological Agents, Household Hazards ...

46Consequences Of Excessive Application Of Pesticides And Impacts On The Environment And Human Health

With the increasing increase in the world population there was a need for a greater supply of food for consumption. In order for farmers to have greater productivity, more profits and exports, they started to use pesticides on their plantations, making excessive use of this product. Knowing the damage that this product can cause, the objective of this work was to compare the research published to date on the possibility of the presence of pesticides in food and natural resources, in addition to their possible influences on the environment and the health of the population. The method used to develop this work was a bibliographical review on the topic of pesticides, the damage to the environment and human health due to their intensive use. The results obtained from the authors cited on the intensive use of pesticides are the risks of diseases in men such as cancer, infertility, impotence, miscarriages, among others. There is also a risk of contamination of breast milk and the birth of babies with autism. In the environment, there is contamination of soil, water, air, food and malformations and death of animals. In order to minimize the impacts of pesticides on the environment and human health, the correct use of this product is necessary, using them according to the leaflet, in the correct dosage, in addition to the correct disposal of packaging and aerial spraying at the limit according to the relevant law. This way you can have a better quality of life and thus preserve the environment for current and future generations.

49IDENTIFICATION OF IMPACTS AND HUMAN HEALTH RISKS PRODUCED BY THE PRESENCE OF PESTICIDES IN THE ENVIRONMENT I. PESTICIDES BEHAVIOUR IN THE ENVIRONMENT – A Review

By

The need to ensure the protection of plants and various areas affected by the presence of pests and pathogens imposed the use of chemicals to help in diminishing crop damages, namely pesticides. As Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), pesticides are resistant chemicals to bio(degradation), their residues being difficult to be removed from the environment. This papers discuss the state of investigations on the presence of pesticides in the environment, their behavior determined by their characteristics, types of pesticides used, the sources from which the pesticides can come. Also some threats that pesticides can generate in the environmental compartments (water, air, soil, sediments) are discussed in correlation with some specific properties of pesticides. A distinct section is dedicated to the presence and behavious of pesticides in fruit and vegetables, the residues found in some plant products according to European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). This analysis generates the support for the identification and characterization of impacts and risks on human health generated by the consumption of plants containing pesticide residues.
