The heatwave's hit at an unfortunate time. Power cuts throughout the city of Karachi have left many people without air conditioning, and it's also the Muslim-fasting holiday of Ramadan, so many people haven't been allowed to drink water during the day. So, some clerics have issued statements that it's ok for people to stop fasting if they're weak or simply just can't anymore. Central to the Millimeter-Wave Thermal Launch System (MTLS) is the millimeter-wave absorbent heat exchanger. We have developed metallic and ceramic variants, with the key challenge being the millimeter-wave absorbent coatings for each. The ceramic heat exchanger came to fruition first, demonstrating for the first time 1800 K peak surface temperatures under illumination by a 110 GHz Gaussian beam. Absorption efficiencies of up to 80 are calculated for mullite heat exchanger tubes and up to 50 are calculated for alumina tubes. These are compared with estimates based on stratified layer and finite element analyses. The problem of how to connect the 1800 K end of the ceramic tubes to a graphite outlet manifold and nozzle is solved by press fitting, or by threading the ends of the ceramic tubes and screwing them into place. The problem of how to connect the ceramic tubes to a metallic or nylon inlet pipe is solved by using soft compliant PTFE and PVC tubes that accommodate thermal deformations of the ceramic tubes during startup and operation. We show the resulting heat exchangers in static tests using argon and helium as propellants.

A theoretical analysis and an experimental investigation were conducted to assess the feasibility of developing a spinning wave heat engine. Such as engine would utilize a large amplitude traveling acoustic wave rotating around a cylindrica chamber, and it should not suffer from the inefficiency, noise, and intermittent thrust which characterizes pulse jet engines. The objective of this investigation was to determine whether an artificially driven large amplitude spinning transverse wave could induce a steady flow of air through the combustion chamber under cold flow conditions. In the theoretical analysis the Maslen and Moore perturbation technique was extended to study flat cylinders (pancake geometry) with completely open side walls and a central opening. In the parallel experimental study, a test moel was used to determine resonant frequencies and radial pressure distributions, as well as oscillatory and steady flow velocities at the inner and outer peripheries. The experimental frequency was nearly the same as the theoretical acoustic value for a model of the same outer diameter but without a central hole. Although the theoretical analysis did not predict a steady velocity component, simulaneous measurements of hotwire and microphone responses have shown that the spinning wave pumps a mean flow radially outward through the cavity.

In order to consistently explain controversial experimental results on superconducting states observed by different probes in typical iron-based superconductors, we construct a realistic multi-band $\pm s$-wave pairing model by combining the quasiclassical formalism with the first-principles calculation. The model successfully resolves the controversies in contrast to the fact that simplified models such as two-band $\pm s$-wave one fail to do. A key in the model is the existence of relatively small gaps which leads to material-dependent peculiarities.

We theoretically investigate the specific heat $C_V$ at constant volume in the normal state of a $p$-wave interacting Fermi gas. Including fluctuations in the $p$-wave Cooper channel within the framework of the strong-coupling theory developed by Nozi\`eres and Schmitt-Rink, we clarify how $C_V$ as a function of temperature varies, as one moves from the weak-coupling regime to the strong-coupling limit. In the weak-coupling regime, $C_V$ is shown to be enhanced by $p$-wave pairing fluctuations, near the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. Similar enhancement of $C_V(T\simeq T_{\rm c})$ is also obtained in the strong-coupling regime, which, however, reflects that system is close an ideal Bose gas of $p$-wave two-body bound molecules. Using these results, we classify the normal state into (1) the normal Fermi gas regime, (2) the $p$-wave molecular Bose gas regime, and (3) the region between the two, where $p$-wave pairing fluctuations are dominant. Since the current experiments can only access the normal phase of a $p$-wave interacting Fermi gas, our results would be useful for experiments to understand strong-coupling properties of this Fermi system above $T_{\rm c}$.

Evidence is presented that the WIND spacecraft observed particle and field signatures on October 18-19, 1995 due to reconnection near the footpoints of a magnetic cloud (i.e., between 1 and 5 solar radii). These signatures include: (1) an internal shock traveling approximately along the axis of the magnetic cloud, (2) a simple compression of the magnetic field consistent with the footpoint magnetic fields being thrust outwards at speeds much greater than the solar wind speed, (3) an electron heat flux dropout occurring within minutes of the shock indicating a topological change resulting from disconnection from the solar surface, (4) a very cold 5 keV proton beam and (5) an associated monochromatic wave. We expect that, given observations of enough magnetic clouds, Wind and other spacecraft will see signatures similar to the ones reported here indicating reconnection. However, these observations require the spacecraft to be fortuitously positioned to observe the passing shock and other signatures and will therefore be associated with only a small fraction of magnetic clouds. Consistent with this, a few magnetic clouds observed by Wind have been found to possess internal shock waves.

The magnetic field dependence of the electronic specific heat C(H) in the s-wave superconductor NbSe_2 shows curvature at low fields, resembling the near H^1/2 term in C(H) which has been reported in high-T_c superconductors and attributed to a d-wave pairing state. In NbSe_2 we find that the low field behavior in C(H) is described quantitatively by the expansion of vortex cores and the field dependence of the magnetic induction B above H_c1. The associated change in the density of quasiparticle states localized in the vortex cores provides a simple explanation for the "low-field anomaly" in C(H) observed in s-wave superconductors.

We'll talk about the ban and its global impact with Aimee David, Director of Ocean Conservation Policy at Monterey Bay Aquarium. Prop. 8 and the Initiative Process - Last Wedneday, the Supreme Court of the United States struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act and found it had no standing to rule on the landmark Proposition 8 case in California, which banned same-sex marriage in the state. That decision put the case back in the hands of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which had enacted a stay on a Judge Walker's ruling that Prop. 8 was unconstitutional. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal lifted that stay on Friday and same-sex marriages in the state began almost immediately. Critics of the high court's ruling on Prop. 8 point out the impact it will have on the stateâs initiative process. If the governor or state attorney general refuse to defend a proposition in court, it can effectively be struck down without appeal. Many of California's initiatives end up in court, which leaves many people wondering why they should vote for propositions in the first place. We'll discuss the pros and cons of the initiative process in California and the impact of the Supreme Court's Prop. 8 ruling with Steve Boilard, Director at Sacramento State University's Center for California Studies and former Legislative Analyst with the Legislative Analyst's Office. Global warming is emerging as one of the most critical threats to terrestrial and marine species worldwide. This study assessed the effects of simulated warming events in culture on two seagrass species, Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa, which play a key role in coastal ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea. Changes in fatty acids as key metabolic indicators were assessed in specimens from two geographical populations of each species adapted to different in situ temperature regimes. Total fatty acid (TFA) content and composition were compared in C. nodosa and P. oceanica from natural populations and following exposure to heat stress in culture. After heat exposure, individuals of C. nodosa and P. oceanica adapted to colder temperatures in situ accumulated significantly more TFA than controls. For both species, the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) decreased, and the percentage of saturated fatty acids (SFA) increased significantly after the heat treatment. These results highlight that populations of both species living at warmest temperatures in situ were more thermo-tolerant and exhibited a greater capacity to cope with heat stress by readjusting their lipid composition faster. Finally, exposure of seagrasses to warmer conditions may induce a decrease in PUFA/SFA ratio which could negatively affect their nutritional value and generate important consequences in the healthy state of next trophic levels.

We show that a hot rotating fluid of relativistic chiral fermions possesses a new gapless collective mode associated with coherent propagation of energy density and chiral density waves along the axis of rotation. This mode, which we call the Chiral Heat Wave, emerges due to a mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly. At finite density the Chiral Heat Wave couples to the Chiral Vortical Wave while in the presence of an external magnetic field it mixes with the Chiral Magnetic Wave. The coupling of the Chiral Magnetic and Chiral Vortical Waves is also demonstrated. We find that the coupled waves - which are coherent fluctuations of the vector, axial and energy currents - have generally different velocities compared to the velocities of the individual waves.

We consider the one-dimensional heat and wave equations but - instead of boundary conditions - we impose on the solution certain non-local, integral constraints. An appropriate Hilbert setting leads to an integration-by-parts formula in Sobolev spaces of negative order and eventually allows us to use semigroup theory leading to analytic well-posedness, hence sharpening regularity results previously obtained by other authors. In doing so we introduce a parametrization of such integral conditions that includes known cases but also shows the connection with more usual boundary conditions, like periodic ones. In the self-adjoint case, we even obtain the so-called Weyl formula for the eigenvalue asymptotics.

Land temperatures, as measured by the modis.gsfc.nasa.gov Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's aqua.nasa.gov/ Aqua satellite, reflected the extreme air temperatures. Afternoon land temperatures are often higher than air temperatures because the land retains heat. In this MODIS image, taken on May 21, the land around the Indus River, the bright red line running from north to south through the center of the image, has reached 67 degrees Celsius (153 Fahrenheit). In the top right corner, the temperature gradient in the Himalaya Mountains might correlate with elevation, as the temperature climbs up the color scale from the frigid, snow-capped peaks (blue) to the hot valleys (red). The pattern is more distinct in the high-resolution image, which shows a larger region to the north, including Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, India, and China at 500 meters per pixel. We consider a coupled $1D$ heat-wave system which serves as a simplified fluid-structure interaction problem. The system is coupled in two different ways: the first, when the interface does not have mass and the second, when the interface does have mass. We prove an optimal regularity result in Sobolev spaces for both cases. The main idea behind the proof is to reduce the coupled problem to a single nonlocal equation on the interface by using Neummann to Diriclet operator. Furthermore, we show that point mass coupling regularizes the problem and quantify this regularization in the sense of Sobolev spaces.
