Gone with the Wind-the top-grossing movie of all time, adjusted for inflation-remains an iconic influence in American culture, despite its deeply troubling portrayal of social and political dynamics in the South during and after the Civil War. The continued popularity of the film points to a need to examine its influence on nearly a century's worth of American race relations, fascistic movements, and denialism in the United States. And why did Adolf Hitler reportedly love it so much?In this cross-post of Chatter, David Priess spoke with cultural and literary historian Sarah Churchwell of the University of London, author of \"The Wrath To Come,\" a book that dives deeply into the film, how it reflects a mythologized \"Lost Cause\" version of the Old South, and its connection with today's increasing political violence. As Rhett and Scarlett fend each other off, the society of Atlanta crumbles around them and then is rebuilt during the periods of the Civil War and Reconstruction. HISTORICAL NOTE: The streaming service HBO Max was the target of outrage from conservative commentators earlier in the 2020s when, in response to the George Floyd protests, it was temporarily removed from the platform. The service eventually restored it, preceded with an introduction from TCM host Jacqueline Stewart, who, in an op-ed for its sister network, CNN, described the film as "a prime text for examining expressions of white supremacy in popular culture", adding that "it is precisely because of the ongoing, painful patterns of racial injustice and disregard for Black lives that Gone with the Wind should stay in circulation and remain available for viewing, analysis and discussion". The film's portrayal of Black Americans and slavery, especially given the backdrop of the film being set in the Civil War, had long been a subject of derision for a number of people in the Black community; some, in fact, picketed the picture during some of its original roadshow theatrical engagements for exactly this reason. Ms. Stewart opined that this particular controversy was "an opportunity to think about what classic films can teach us".

Star clusters larger than $\sim 10^{3}$ $M_\odot$ contain multiple hot stars that launch fast stellar winds. The integrated kinetic energy carried by these winds is comparable to that delivered by supernova explosions, suggesting that at early times winds could be an important form of feedback on the surrounding cold material from which the star cluster formed. However, the interaction of these winds with the surrounding clumpy, turbulent, cold gas is complex and poorly understood. Here we investigate this problem via an accounting exercise: we use empirically determined properties of four well-studied massive star clusters to determine where the energy injected by stellar winds ultimately ends up. We consider a range of kinetic energy loss channels, including radiative cooling, mechanical work on the cold interstellar medium, thermal conduction, heating of dust via collisions by the hot gas, and bulk advection of thermal energy by the hot gas. We show that, for at least some of the clusters, none of these channels can account for more than a small fraction of the injected energy. We suggest that turbulent mixing at the hot-cold interface or physical leakage of the hot gas from the HII region can efficiently remove the kinetic energy injected by the massive stars in young star clusters. Even for the clusters where we are able to account for all the injected kinetic energy, we show that our accounting sets strong constraints on the importance of stellar winds as a mechanism for feedback on the cold interstellar medium.

Camille Paglia argues that some degree of sexual restraint and repression (and indeed, in the case of Code-era Hollywood, censorship) had the paradoxical effect of producing greater sexuality, or "sizzle," in art than today, when sexuality is free to be explicit.
