The purpose of this study is to set forth the procedures and criteria for the acceptably accurate measurement of the true average steady-state static pressure in fluid power systems. The scope is limited to the measurement of average steady-state static pressure in closed conductors, which are transmitting hydraulic fluid power. Fluid velocities are less than 25 metres per second. Pressure pulsations with peak-to-peak amplitudes are less than 100% of the average steady-state static pressure. Carrying fluids have specific gravities between 0.6 and 1.2. Average steady-state static pressures are less than 700 bar. Inside diameters are greater than 3.0 millimetre. Excluded are the criteria for the location of pressure taps upstream and downstream of flow disturbances, such criteria being within the scopes of the specific component or system test procedure standard. Included are those identifiable effects which contribute significantly to the total error in pressure measurement.

Contaminant wear is one of the critical factors in component life and reliability. Therefore, the detection and analysis of this wear is extremely important. In this study, it was determined that ferrography is an effective tool for this detection and analysis. A theortical method was developed by which the behavior of both magnetic and non-magnetic particles in the fluid stream on the ferrogram can be predicted. This method indicates that very few magnetic particles will not be deposited on the ferrogram. This was verified experimentally. Tests were conducted on gear pumps, a hydrostatic transmission, and complete hydraulic system to verify the effectiveness of the ferrographic technique. These tests showed that changes in the wear rate of a system or component could be readily detected by the ferrograph. The lack of standardization of ferrographic procedures is delaying the acceptance of the ferrograph as a critical decision making instrument. A very advanced draft procedure has been prepared and is ready for consideration by the appropriate committee of the Society of Automotive Engineers. (Author)

The advanced solar dynamic system (ASDS) program is aimed at developing the technology for highly efficient, lightweight space power systems. The approach is to evaluate Stirling, Brayton and liquid metal Rankine power conversion systems (PCS) over the temperature range of 1025 to 1400K, identify the critical technologies and develop these technologies. Microgravity fluid management technology is required in several areas of this program, namely, thermal energy storage (TES), heat pipe applications and liquid metal, two phase flow Rankine systems. Utilization of the heat of fusion of phase change materials offers potential for smaller, lighter TES systems. The candidate TES materials exhibit large volume change with the phase change. The heat pipe is an energy dense heat transfer device. A high temperature application may transfer heat from the solar receiver to the PCS working fluid and/or TES. A low temperature application may transfer waste heat from the PCS to the radiator. The liquid metal Rankine PCS requires management of the boiling/condensing process typical of two phase flow systems.

This course in fluid power systems is one of 16 courses in the Energy Technology Series developed for an Energy Conservation-and-Use Technology curriculum. Intended for use in two-year postsecondary technical institutions to prepare technicians for employment, the courses are also useful in industry for updating employees in company-sponsored training programs. Comprised of eight modules, the course provides an overview of fluid power technology and a working of each of the components used in fluid power circuits. Hydraulic and pneumatic systems are discussed with emphasis placed on troubleshooting and maintenance procedures involved in each. Written by a technical expert and approved by industry representatives, each module contains the following elements: introduction, prerequisites, objectives, subject matter, exercises, laboratory materials, laboratory procedures (experiment section for hands-on portion), data tables (included in most basic courses to help students learn to collect or organize data), references, and glossary. A number of micro-/nano-devices using arrayed silicon nanotips (SiNTs), ZnO nanorods and related advanced nano-composites as their key components have been developed. These devices possess specific attributes such as architecture- and/or surface/interfacecontrolled properties. For any targeted functionality, different treatments for the surface or interface are required for best optimizing the resultant physical/chemical properties. On-chip approach to fabricate micro-/nano-fluidic devices involving fluid and carrier transport, such as the electrochemical power and sensing has been employed. The institute was designed to provide industrial arts teachers with updating experiences in fluid power education. It had four educational phases: technical instruction, directed field experiences, teaching strategies, and professional development. The latter involved meeting with participants in two other institutes. Twenty-one participants were selected from 360 applicants. Evaluation data collected from the participants indicated a high degree of satisfaction with the program. The evaluation instrument and participant list are included. The Two-phase Flow, Fluid Stability and Dynamics Workshop was held on May 15, 2003 in Cleveland, Ohio to define a coherent scientific research plan and roadmap that addresses the multiphase fluid problems associated with NASA s technology development program. The workshop participants, from academia, industry and government, prioritized various multiphase issues and generated a research plan and roadmap to resolve them. This report presents a prioritization of the various multiphase flow and fluid stability phenomena related primarily to power, propulsion, fluid and thermal management and advanced life support; and a plan to address these issues in a logical and timely fashion using analysis, ground-based and space-flight experiments.

This project involved an investigation of ionic liquid ion sources (ILIS) for use in electrospray emitters for miniaturized spacecraft propulsion. Ion extraction is achieved by stressing the ionic liquid into a Taylor cone structure, formed on the apex of micro-sized, nanostructured tips known as emitters. These ion sources can be used in applications such as ILIS electrospray propulsion for multi-scale spacecraft and materials processing at the nanoscale. Through this research, the two fundamental life-limiting issues of ILIS operation have been identified and mitigated: electrochemical degradation and gas discharges. A distal electrode configuration was proposed and verified as a strategy to curtail electrochemistry. Furthermore, it was determined that trapped micro-bubbles of gas inside porous ILIS substrates can cause degassing during operation, leading to electrical discharges that provoke to device failure. It was demonstrated that discharges are suppressed through adequate liquid filling strategies. Lastly, novel fabrication techniques for emitter substrates and electrodes based on nanomaterials have been explored. Fabrication of porous dielectric substrates in micron-sized molds has been achieved by sintering of glass micro beads.

High speed flowing gas system provides uniform mixing in short times compared to flow transit times and carbon dioxide vibrational relaxation times. This system minimizes the effects of surrounding surfaces and provides a uniformly high gain that is independent of dimensions transverse to the flow direction.
