Adaptive computing systems (ACS) rely on reconfigurable hardware to adapt the system operation to changes in the external environment, and to extend mission capability by implementing new functions on the same hardware platform. This results in increased functional density and reduced power consumption - features very important in many domains, such as space missions or mobile devices. Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) featuring incremental dynamic runtime reconfiguration (RTR) offer additional benefits by allowing the system to continue to execute uninterrupted, while portions of the FPGA are reconfigured for new logic functions. ACS are often deployed in harsh and/or hostile remote environments, and they are subject to strict high-reliability and high-availability requirements. Cosmic radiation may perturb the operation of a defect-free FPGA, and marginal defects not causing failures in manufacturing testing (such as a short initially having very high resistance) may become active with the aging of the device, or because of environmental factors. Since direct human intervention for maintenance and repair is impossible in such environments, fault-tolerant (FT) techniques resulting in graceful degradation must be used to achieve the desired mission life even in the presence of faults. However, traditional FT design, based on replicated modular redundancy and voting, is extremely expensive given the space, weight, and power constraints of ACS.

Therefore, it is extremely important that transmission line faults from various sources to be identified accurately, reliably and be corrected as soon as possible. This paper presents fault location algorithm based on date measured at both ends of two terminal single high voltage transmission line. This work proposes an additional function for a VSD (Variable Speed Drive) which sends and receives information over the power lines and simultaneously, implements the protection against insulation faults to earth. Using the magnetic components of the insulation fault protection system of the motor, the prototype injects and detects the communication signals over the power line. The system works on both communication schemes, with and without the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) perturbation in the power lines, which are the two possible real applications. In order to set a proper communication between the motor and the drive, the communication channel was modeled and the noise was characterized. An FSK modulation and demodulation scheme was developed and tested. A 10 kbps communication over a 125m length of cable and over a 1km pi-section model of the same cable was successfully achieved with the laboratory prototype.

This paper is present a novel approach for solving the pending under-reach problem encountered by distance relay protection scheme in the 3rd zones protection coverage for a midpoint STATCOM compensated transmission lines. The propose transmission line model is develop in Matlab for analyzed feature extraction using Discrete Wavelet multiresolution analysis approach. Extracted feature from standard deviation and entropy energy contents of SLG transient faults current at location beyond the integrated STATCOM used for machine learning algorithm model building using WEKA software. The Naïve Bayes classifier model perform best with robustness prediction and detection of faults with quick convergence even with less training data. The outperformance of the proposed classifier has been 100 % for the relay algorithm modification for under-reach problem elimination in 3rd zones protection coverage.

Fault detection and classification in UPFC (Unified Power Flow Controller) integrated transmission line using single terminal based DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) is proposed. The current is extracted from the sending end bus and processed through wavelet transform to evaluate the spectral energy (SE) using db4 mother wavelet. Three level decomposition is framed to extract the fundamental frequency component from non-stationary signal, considering sampling frequency of 2kHz system. The fundamental frequency component of respective phase currents are used to compute SE at sending end. The SE of individual phase current is the key factor for deciding the fault pattern detection and classification. The advantage of using this it requires less cost and protect entire transmission line with minimal fault detection time. The various types of fault (L-G, L-L, L-L-G, L-L-L) are simulated by considering the parameter like fault resistance, source impedance, fault inception angle, multi-location fault, reverse power flow and UPFC system parameter. The scheme works reliable and efficient to detect and classify the fault within a cycle of time period 20ms.

This paper proposed a new algorithm for fault location and classification using wavelet based on Clarke’s transformation to obtain the fault current. This novel method of fault current approach is studied by comparing the use of the glide path of the fault voltage. The current alpha and beta (Current Mode) were used to transform the signal using discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The fault location was determined by using the Clarke’s transformation, and then turned into a wavelet, which was very precise and thorough. The most accurate was the mother wavelet Db4 which had the fastest time and smallest error detection when compared with the other wavelet mothers. In this study, the Clarke’s transformation is also compared with the Karenbauer’s, which has produced results with similar error percentage. The simulation results using PSCAD / EMTDC software showed that the proposed algorithm could distinguish internal and external faults to get the current signal in the transformation of a signal fault.

To meet these requirement an  approach based on discrete wavelet transform using neural  network (NN) is proposed to estimate the fault location of  the three phase transmission line and the results have been  compared with the conventional  method  (measuring the  sequence components of voltage and current). The proposed  approach is based on the measurements of the three phase  fault current signals at one terminal of the transmission line  (at relaying point), created for different fault operating  conditions using MATLAB software. To accomplish the task,  features of these measured signals are extracted in terms of  summation of ninth level detail coefficients using multiresolution analysis (MRA) based on discrete wavelet  transform, selecting daubechies4 (db4) as mother wavelet at  100 kHz sampling frequency. These features are then used as  an input to train and test the feed forward neural network  (FFNN) to provide fault location from the relaying point on  the transmission line. The NN estimates the location of the  fault with a significant reduction in percentage error  compared to the conventional method of fault location for  wide variations  of operating condition. Hence, the use of  multi-resolution analysis (MRA) based on discrete wavelet  transform in combination with NN is quite promising for  fault location estimation of the transmission line.

The protection of double circuit transmission lines is a challenging task. The proposed work presents a protection technique based on the high-frequency transients generated by the fault to cover almost the total length of double circuit transmission lines. For this purpose, appropriately designed line traps are installed at terminals of the protected transmission line, and the Artificial Neural Network with suitable number of Neurons is used to classify the internal and external faults occur and which is based on the frequency spectrum of the current and voltage signals and identifying location and so therefore also it protect  the remaining transmission line
