1NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20110016707: Orbital Fitness: An Overview Of Space Shuttle Cardiopulmonary Exercise Physiology Findings

By

Limited observations regarding the cardiopulmonary responses to aerobic exercise had been conducted during short-duration spaceflight before the Space Shuttle program. This presentation focuses on the findings regarding changes observed in the cardiopulmonary exercise responses during and following Shuttle flights. During flight, maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) remained unchanged as did the maximum work rate achievable during cycle exercise testing conducted during the last full flight day. Immediately following flight, the ubiquitous finding, confirmed by investigations conducted during the Spacelab Life Sciences missions 1 and 2 and by NASA Detailed Supplemental Objective studies, indicated that VO2max was reduced; however, the reduction in VO2max was transient and returned to preflight levels within 7 days following return. Studies regarding the influence of aerobic exercise countermeasures performed during flight on postflight performance were mostly limited to the examination of the heart rate (HR) response to submaximal exercise testing on landing day. These studies revealed that exercise HR was elevated in individuals who performed little to no exercise during their missions as compared to individuals who performed regular exercise. In addition, astronauts who performed little to no aerobic exercise during flight demonstrated an increased HR and lowered pulse pressure response to the standard stand test on landing day, indicating a decrease in orthostatic function in these individuals. With regard to exercise modality, four devices were examined during the Shuttle era: two treadmills, a cycle ergometer, and a rowing device. Although there were limited investigations regarding the use of these devices for exercise training aboard the Shuttle, there was no clear consensus reached regarding which proved to be a "superior" device. Each device had a unique operational or physiologic limitation associated with its use. In conclusion, exercise research conducted during the Shuttle Program demonstrated that attenuation of postflight deconditioning was possible through use of exercise countermeasures and the Shuttle served as a test bed for equipment destined for use on the International Space Station. Learning Objective: Overview of the Space Shuttle Program research results related to aerobic capacity and performance, including what was learned from research and effectiveness of exercise countermeasures.

11Identification Of Exercise Physiology And Motor Learning Principles Applied To Vocal Training For Singers: A Scoping Review

By

Abstract Objective: Identify the principles of exercise physiology and motor learning applied to vocal training for singers. Inclusion criteria: Based on the PCC (Population, Concept, and Context) acronym, the inclusion criteria for this scoping review are as follows: (1) Participants – Singers above 18 years of age. Concept – Principles of exercise physiology and motor learning. Contexts – Vocal training: warm-up, cool-down, conditioning, strengthening, flexibility, and other vocal skills. There are no geographical or temporal restrictions. Experimental, quasi-experimental, and pre-post intervention studies will be considered. Methods: The method adopted for this scoping review follows the JBI methodology. The search strategy aims to find both published and unpublished studies, starting with a limited search in MEDLINE to identify at least three primary studies on the topic, excluding previous reviews. The PCC framework will be applied to develop a comprehensive search strategy across various databases, including MEDLINE, LILACS, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library. Additionally, a manual search in the grey literature and mapping of the references from the studies included in the electronic database searches will be conducted. The selection of studies will be carried out independently by two reviewers, with an initial calibration. Data from the included studies will be extracted using a standardized spreadsheet, including information on authorship, country, study design, sample and intervention characteristics, and identification of the application of exercise physiology and motor learning principles. The data will be analyzed descriptively by relative and absolute frequency and presented in tables and graphs.

32Exercise Physiology Methods And Reporting Survey

By

We recently found poor reporting quality and a high risk of bias among studies comparing fitness responses to different modes of exercise training. What remains unclear is whether authors performed adequate methodologies that reduce bias but failed to report doing so. The purpose of this survey study is to determine whether exercise physiology researchers perform bias-mitigating methodologies and whether this information is reported in published manuscripts. Surveys will be electronically distributed to Kinesiology departments of Universities worldwide via Qualtrix. Recruitment will occur via social media posts (Twitter), and by word of mouth through research networks. Survey responses will be anonymous. Our study will shed important light on the use and quality of bias-mitigating methodologies and reporting practices in exercise physiology research.

33ERIC EJ1113695: Developing An Objective Structured Clinical Examination To Assess Work-Integrated Learning In Exercise Physiology

By

This paper aims to develop a valid method to assess the key competencies of the exercise physiology profession acquired through work-integrated learning (WIL). In order to develop a competency-based assessment, the key professional tasks needed to be identified and the test designed so students' competency in different tasks and settings could be assessed. The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) was adopted for this purpose. Key competencies for practice were identified by clinical academics, practicing accredited exercise physiologists (AEPs), and by a review of the exercise physiology scope of practice document. Final year exercise physiology students who had completed professional placements participated in three pilot OSCEs. Content validity was evaluated following feedback from students and staff, and test results were analyzed to confirm reliability. Key competencies were grouped within the domains of communication, clinical and procedural skills, and technical proficiency. The results indicate that the OSCE is a valid and reliable method of assessment of the key professional competencies of exercise physiology students acquired through WIL.

47DTIC ADA217969: Hydration Effects On Human Physiology And Exercise-Heat Performance

By

During exercise in the heat, sweat output often exceeds water intake resulting in hypohydration, which defined as body fluid deficit. This fluid deficit is comprised of water loss from both the intracellular and extracellular fluid compartments. There is no evidence that hypohydration can benefit exercise performance; in addition, man cannot adapt to chronic dehydration. Exercise tasks that primarily require aerobic metabolism and that are prolonged will more likely be adversely influenced by hypohydration than exercise tasks that require anaerobic metabolism as well as muscular strength and power. Likewise, the warmer the environmental temperature, the greater the potential for hypohydration to cause decrements in all types of exercise performance. Hypohydration causes a greater heat storage and reduces endurance as well as maximal effort exercise performance in comparison to euhydration levels. The greater heat storage is mediated by a decreased sweating rate (evaporative heat loss) as well as by a decreased cutaneous blood flow (dry heat loss). These response decrements have been attributed to both a plasma hyperosmolality and a reduced blood volume. The reduced blood volume also makes it difficult to maintain an adequate cardiac output during exercise-heat stress. Finally, preliminary data indicate that hypohydration does not alter muscle glycogen utilization during exercise or the glycogen resynthesis during recovery from exercise. Keywords: Dehydration; Hypohydration; Exercise performance; Body water requirements; Temperature regulation.

2Stories the Iroquois Tell Their Children

By

Book's cover

Stories the Iroquois Tell Their Children by Mabel Powers is a beautiful collection of traditional Iroquois tales that not only entertain but also teach fundamental cultural values and life lessons. These stories, passed down through generations by elders around the fire, serve to educate children on themes such as bravery, kindness, respect for nature, and the importance of community. The book’s tales feature a range of characters including the Little People, animals, and children. Each story is rich with symbolic meaning. Powers also touches on the role of nature in these stories, reflecting the Iroquois' deep reverence for the natural world and its creatures, while exploring concepts like gratitude, generosity, and cooperation. By weaving together these ancient tales with lessons about life, the book offers not only a glimpse into Iroquois culture but also timeless wisdom that transcends generations. - Summary by Anthony Karl Futterer
