This paper constitutes an analysis of "Honey Bee Communication: An Enquiry into Two Concepts of Animal Behavior," a unit of classroom discussion modules developed by the Patterns of Enquiry Project at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. The conceptual framework of the analysis consists of four major items: (1) descriptive characteristics, (2) theoretical orientation, (3) instructional orientation, and (4) comparison and evaluation. Various sections of the unit are analyzed, with particular reference to the goals and orientation of the unit, the structure and format of the textual materials, and suggested ways of using the unit. The textual analysis is directed toward the practical aspects of implementing an enquiry unit. In addition brief considerations concerning the philosophical basis of this approach are made.
