7DTIC ADA323113: Monitoring Fish And Wildlife For Environmental Contaminants: The National Contaminant Biomonitoring Program,

By

The purpose of the monitoring program is to answer two basic questions: How do levels of pollutants in fish and wildlife vary according to geographic region? And, what changes are occurring over time? Harmful chemicals can enter the environment from sources other than pesticide application. The persistent and widespread polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are an example of these pollutants.

21DTIC ADA042168: Environmental Planning For The Metropolitan Area Cedar-Green River Basins, Washington. Part II. Urban Drainage Study. Appendix C. Storm Water Monitoring Program,

By

The quantity and quality of stormwater runoff in the Metropolitan Seattle, Washington area was measured over a seven-month period. Survey sites were selected on the basis of land use and included single and multiple family residential, commercial and industrial areas. Quantity measurements involved continuous recording of stormwater runoff and rainfall volume and intensity while quality measurements were made for 29 parameters with samples taken at specified intervals during the course of six storms. Rainfall intensity was light for the monitoring period, resulting in a relatively low percentage of stormwater runoff factors, which varied from 5 percent for low density residential areas to 64 percent for commercial areas. Pollutant washoff loading varied with land use pattern. The pollutants of major concern were solids, BOD, COD and oil. Nutrient and heavy metal loading values with some exceptions, were relatively low. Coliform values were high but not of apparent sanitary significance.

23DTIC AD0271023: THE SM-1 ENVIRONMENTAL RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING PROGRAM, NOVEMBER 1954- DECEMBER 1960

By

An environmental radiological monitoring program was conducted. All data obtained during a period extending from 1 1/2 years prior to SM-1 reactor start-up through more than 3 years of reactor operation are summarized. The period extended from November 1954 through December 1960. Samples assayed for radioactivity include the following: River water and botton silt; SM-1 condenser cooling water; subsurface ground water; rain and snow; atmospheric particles obtained by air filtration and fallout; and biota. The report concludes that after more than 3 years of SM-1 reactor operation, no significant increase has been noted in the radiological background level in the Fort Belvoir area.

By

Two environmental monitoring systems that provide information on the geometry, spectra, and directionality of surface waves were tested during an in- water experiment conducted by the Naval Underwater Systems Center. The experiment was carried out as part of the Weapons Environmental Acoustics Program (WEAP) off Block Island, RI, in May 1982. Preliminary results demonstrate the usefulness and reliability of the two systems in remotely measuring sea surface conditions. Wave measurements and other environmental observations made during the experiment are presented, and application of the instrumentation to weapons testing is discussed.

27DTIC ADA050880: Department Of The Army Pesticide Monitoring Program, Evaluation Of Environmental Samples Collected In Calendar Year 1975.

By

Data results of the 1975 Dep of the Army Pesticide Monitoring Program indicate that the three soil groups based on land use are significantly different. The areas having the greates pesticide burden are the pesticide shop and storage areas. The area having the lowest pesticide burden is soil group III. The golf courses exhibit significantly higher pesticide residues than the other sites in soil group II. The four functional sediment stratifications show significantly different pesticide residues. The two functional stratifications of fish appear to be good indicators of the aquatic environment. The limited amount of bird samples places severe limitations on all conclusions from these data. The bird data do suggest that birds possess high metabolic activity. Recommendations are made with reference to sample collection and the pesticides for which analysis is done.

29DTIC ADA376100: Biomonitoring Of Environmental Status And Trends (BEST) Program: Selected Methods For Monitoring Chemical Contaminants And Their Effects In Aquatic Ecosystems

By

This document describes the suite of biological methods of the U.S. Geological Survey Biomonitoring of Environmental Status and Trends program for monitoring chemical contaminants and their effects on fish. The methods, which were selected by panels of experts, are being field-tested in rivers of the Mississippi River, Columbia River, and Rio Grande basins. General health biomarkers include a health assessment index based on gross observation; histopathological examination of selected organs and tissues; condition factor; and the heptosomatic and splenosomatic indices. Immune system indicators are plasma lysozyme activity and measures of splenic macrophage aggregates. Reproductive biomarkers include plasma concentrations of sex steroids hormones (17beta-estradiaol and 11-ketotestosterone) and vitellogenin, gonadal histopathology (including reproductive stage and, in females, gonadal atresia), and the gonadosomatic index. Indicators of exposure to polycyclic aromatic and polyhalogenated hydrocarbons are the H4IIE rat hepatoma cell bioassay (performed on solvent extracts of composite fish samples) and hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity. Stable nitrogen isotope ratios are used to assess the trophic position of the fish and their exposure to sewage and other animal wastes. For each indicator we describe endpoints(s) and methods, and discuss the indicator's value and limitations for contaminant monitoring and assessment.

32NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19970001899: Advanced Environmental Monitoring And Control Program: Strategic Plan

By

Human missions in space, from short-duration shuttle missions lasting no more than several days to the medium-to-long-duration missions planned for the International Space Station, face a number of hazards that must be understood and mitigated for the mission to be carried out safely. Among these hazards are those posed by the internal environment of the spacecraft itself; through outgassing of toxic vapors from plastics and other items, failures or off-nominal operations of spacecraft environmental control systems, accidental exposure to hazardous compounds used in experiments: all present potential hazards that while small, may accumulate and pose a danger to crew health. The first step toward mitigating the dangers of these hazards is understanding the internal environment of the spacecraft and the compounds contained within it. Future spacecraft will have integrated networks of redundant sensors which will not only inform the crew of hazards, but will pinpoint the problem location and, through analysis by intelligent systems, recommend and even implement a course of action to stop the problem. This strategic plan details strategies to determine NASA's requirements for environmental monitoring and control systems for future spacecraft, and goals and objectives for a program to answer these needs.

37NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19960052836: Advanced Environmental Monitoring And Control Program: Technology Development Requirements

By

Human missions in space, from the International Space Station on towards potential human exploration of the moon, Mars and beyond into the solar system, will require advanced systems to maintain an environment that supports human life. These systems will have to recycle air and water for many months or years at a time, and avoid harmful chemical or microbial contamination. NASA's Advanced Environmental Monitoring and Control program has the mission of providing future spacecraft with advanced, integrated networks of microminiaturized sensors to accurately determine and control the physical, chemical and biological environment of the crew living areas. This document sets out the current state of knowledge for requirements for monitoring the crew environment, based on (1) crew health, and (2) life support monitoring systems. Both areas are updated continuously through research and space mission experience. The technologies developed must meet the needs of future life support systems and of crew health monitoring. These technologies must be inexpensive and lightweight, and use few resources. Using these requirements to continue to push the state of the art in miniaturized sensor and control systems will produce revolutionary technologies to enable detailed knowledge of the crew environment.

38Monitoring Ecological Condition In The Western United States : Proceedings Of The Fourth Symposium On The Environmental Monitoring Assessment Program (EMAP), San Francisco, CA, April 6-8, 1999

41DTIC ADA067267: Department Of The Army Pesticide Monitoring Program Evaluation Of Environmental Samples Collected In Calendar Year 1976.

By

Results of the calendar year 1976 Department of the Army Pesticide Monitoring Program are presented. Significant findings and conclusions are as follows: (a) Untransformed data should not be relied upon in making statistical comparisons of environmental pesticide residues. (b) The stratified sampling design is adequate to provide an environmental pesticide profile of an installation. (c) Significant differences observed in CY 75 soil data were again evident in CY 76 data. (d) Significant differences observed in CY 75 sediment data were not observed in CY 76 data. (e) Fish exhibit a greater diversity of pesticide residues than corresponding sediment. (f) Statistically significant interactions among the various components were noted with regard to quantitative data. (g) Two years data did not indicate any significant general trends or patterns in pesticide residues. (Author)

43DTIC ADA412299: Dredged Material Management Plan And Environmental Impact Statement. McNary Reservoir And Lower Snake River Reservoirs. Appendix M: Monitoring Program

By

This final Dredged Material Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (DMMP/EIS) presents the Corps of Engineers' programmatic plan for maintenance of the authorized navigation channel and certain publicly owned facilities in the lower Snake River reservoirs between Lewiston, Idaho and the Columbia River; and McNary reservoir on the Columbia River for 20 years; for management of dredged material from theses reservoirs; and for maintenance of flow conveyance capacity at the most upstream extent of the Lower Granite reservoir for the remaining economic life of the dam and reservoir project (to year 2074). The Corps, along with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, analyzed four alternatives for this Final DMMP/EIS: Alternative 1 - No Action (No Change) - Maintenance Dredging With In-Water Disposal; Alternative 2 - Maintenance Dredging With In-Water Disposal to Create Fish Habitat and a 3-Foot Levee Raise; Alternative 3 - Maintenance Dredging with Upland Disposal and a 3-Foot Levee Raise; and Alternative 4 - Maintenance Dredging With Beneficial Use of Dredged Material and a 3-Foot Levee Raise (Recommended Plan/Preferred Alternative).
