The principal purpose of this study was to evaluate and describe the performance and applicability of selected CSRP* (Continuous seismic reflection profiling) and sidescanning sonar systems to locate, identify, and monitor significant geological morphological, and man-made features or processes occurring in stream channels that are directly or indirectly involved in the process of streambank erosion. An additional objective of the study was to present types of equipment available and techniques of employing the equipment that can assist in various phases of engineering and geological studies located within fluvial environments. The major emphasis of this study was to determine the applicability of selected waterborne acoustic profiling systems at sites along streams where streambank erosion has been a recurrent problem. This report presents data obtained during waterborne surveys conducted on selected reaches of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, and White Rivers. The data consists primarily of subsurface CSRP and side-scanning sonar profile records which provide graphic illustations of the capabilities of these systems to detect and monitor riverline features and processes.

The Virgin Islands Trough (VIT) is a deep (4500 meters (m)), elongate basin bounded on its north and south sides by steep fault escarpments. The south escarpment forms the north submarine slope of St. Croix Island and has an average gradient of 18-23 degrees, although local gradients vary between 5-47 degrees. The slope is cut by two submarine canyons that terminate at mid-slope. In the case of the larger canyon, erosional debris is carried from the canyon mouth to the basin floor via a system of gullies. This report is organized into four parts: Introduction, Geology and Geophysics, Geotechnical Investigations, and Engineering Significance.

Information concerning the eight science college commissions now in existence is provided. These commissions encompass the fields of agriculture, biology, chemistry, engineering, geography, geology, mathematics and physics. An overview of the primary functions and commitments of the commissions and consulting services offered is presented. Engineering geology and soil mechanics are disciplines concerned with the study and evaluation of environmental conditions at a proposed site where the designed structure is to be built and where its operating conditions are affected by the surrounding geological features. By virtue of their subject matter, both engineering geology and soil mechanics are general engineering disciplines. For college students specialising in transport technology, they may provide a theoretical basis for such applied disciplines as road construction, construction of airfields, and the construction of bridges and tunnels. The textbook is divided into four parts. Part One deals with elementary general geology. Part Two considers fundamentals of soil science for engineers. Part Three introduces elementary soil mechanics and Part Four, elementary engineering geology. This order of presentation mirrors the fact that the scientific basis of engineering geology is soil engineering and soil mechanics. Both the theoretical and practical tasks faced by engineering geology can be solved based on natural and historical analysis, utilising field and laboratory investigations which, whenever possible, include physicomechanical methods along with calculation formulas encompassing soil mechanics.
