Future space missions were hypothesized and analyzed, and the energy source of their accomplishment investigated. The missions included manned Mars, scientific outposts to and robotic sample return missions from the outer planets and asteroids, as well as fly-by and rendezvous missions with the Oort Cloud and the nearest star, Alpha Centauri. Space system parametric requirements and operational features were established. The energy means for accomplishing missions where delta v requirements range from 90 km/sec to 30,000 km/sec (High Energy Space Mission) were investigated. The need to develop a power space of this magnitude is a key issue to address if the U.S. civil space program is to continue to advance as mandated by the National Space Policy. Potential energy options which could provide the propulsion and electrical power system and operational requirements were reviewed and evaluated. Fusion energy was considered to be the preferred option and was analyzed in depth. Candidate fusion fuels were evaluated based upon the energy output and neutron flux. Additionally, fusion energy can offer significant safety, environmental, economic, and operational advantages. Reactors exhibiting a highly efficient use of magnetic fields for space use while at the same time offering efficient coupling to an exhaust propellant or to a direct energy convertor for efficient electrical production were examined. Near term approaches were identified. A strategy that will produce fusion powered vehicles as part of the space transportation infrastructure was developed. Space program resources must be directed toward this issue as a matter of the top policy priority.

The purpose of this study was to explore possible baseline developments and available options for mitigating energy-use related emissions in China. the first part of the report deals with an analysis and overview of available data on historic energy production and consumptions trends and current energy resources. Special attention was paid to the 1995-200 period, in which the trend of Chinese carbon dioxide emissions seems to have temporarily reversed. The major part of the project focused at developing a set of energy and emission scenarios for China for the 1995-2100 period on the basis of the global IPCC baseline scenarios with the use of the simulation model IMAGE/TIMER. The two main baseline scenarios of the study differed, among other aspects, in the openness of the Chinese economy and in economic growth. However, both indicate a rapid growth in carbon emissions (2.0 and 2.6% per year in the 2000-2050 period). The baseline scenario analysis showed that an orientation on environmental sustainability may not only reduce other environmental pressures but also carbon dioxide emissions. In the mitigation analysis, a large number of options were evaluated in terms of impacts on investments, user, costs, fuel import costs and emissions. A large potential was found to exist for mitigating carbon dioxide emissions in China, for example, in the form of energy efficiency improvement (with large co-benefits) and through measures in the electricity sector. Combining all options considered would appear to offer a possibility for reducing emissions by 50% in comparison to the baseline scenarios. The aims of this research are to evaluate the impact of climate change on the energy performance of residential buildings and to analyze if bioclimatic strategies that are appropriate for present climatic conditions should be applied in the design of future buildings. A compact conventional housing that represents an Argentinean typical mid-income house was simulated with EnergyPlus software and calibrated with measured data. Energy consumption and bioclimatic strategies were analyzed for future data under A2 scenario. The change of annual energy use between the baseline period (1961–1990) and 2080 is predicted to range from − 25% to 8% for conventional housing buildings. The energy destined to air heating and cooling will be 23%–59% lower and 360–790% higher, respectively, in 2080 than in the baseline period (1961–1990). These values correspond to decreases between 6.0 and 7.6 kWh/m 2 -decade (heating) and increases between 1.7 and 8.4 kWh/m 2 -decade (cooling). Recommendations on future building design and building retrofit are done. Sunshading together a with reduction of direct solar gains and natural ventilation were found to be the most effective design strategies to counteract climate changes in future buildings.

Unlimited: Renewable Energy in the 21st Century is a documentary about renewable energy and other alternatives to fossil fuels, as told by a group of passionate kids calling for adults to take action.

Energy security was a major national issue during the 1970s and 198Os. In recent years, it received less attention as the price of oil declined and as U.S. oil supplies seemed more secure. But as we plan for the next decade, we have no reason to be smug. Many experts predict that the nation is likely to become more dependent on oil imports, and that the world will increasingly rely on oil produced from the politically volatile Persian Gulf. Given current trends, some contend that the United States and the world may be headed back toward oil price shocks like those in 1973 and 1979. Others disagree, arguing that the industrialized states will no longer have to worry about dependence on Persian Gulf oil. This volume poses two central questions: (1) What does energy security mean now that energy supply is determined more and more by market forces? (2) What are the most likely circumstances under which the United States may have to apply diplomatic and military pressure to ensure orderly world energy markets? The papers collected here examine areas of the energy market of central concern for national security. They also consider energy prospects in key countries from the point of view of security, either because the countries are in volatile regions like the Persian Gulf or because they are major military as well as energy powers like Russia. These analyses represent an exciting exchange of views among people from two rather different communities: those concerned with national security and those concerned with energy and economics. Now is a good moment, while our energy supply situation is comfortable, to reflect on whether the current, rather benign situation will persist and what preparations we should make against the possibility of energy supply problems.
