Embedded systems are often subject to real-time constraints. Such systems require determinism to ensure that task deadlines are met. Schedulability analysis provides a firm basis to ensure that tasks meet their deadlines. Knowledge of bounds on worst-case execution times (WCET) of tasks is a critical piece of information required by schedulability analysis. Static timing analysis derives these bounds on WCETs, but requires that bounds on loop iterations be known statically, i.e., at compile time. This often limits the class of applications that may be analyzed by static timing analysis and, hence, used in a real-time system. Another limiting factor for real-time system design is the class of processors that may be used. Typically, modern, complex, processors may not be used in real-time systems design. Contemporary processors with their advanced architectural features, such as out-of-order execution, branch prediction, speculation, and prefetching, cannot be statically analyzed to obtain WCETs for tasks. The main reason is that these features introduce non-determinism to task execution, which can only be resolved at run-time. The contributions of this work are two-fold. First, we show how the constraint concerning statically bound loops may be relaxed and applied to make dynamic decisions at run-time to obtain power savings. Second, we introduce a new paradigm, which proposes minor enhancements to modern processor architectures, which, on interaction with software modules, is able to obtain tight, accurate timing analysis results for modern processors. To the best of our knowledge, these methods of (a) using run-time information to obtain accurate upper bounds for loops and using that information to achieve energy savings, and (b) hardware/software interactions to calculate WCET results for out-of-order processors, are the first of their kind. ©2008 Microsoft Corporation. A robotic system includes a humanoid robot with multiple compliant joints, each moveable using one or more of the actuators, and having sensors for measuring control and feedback data. A distributed controller controls the joints and other integrated system components over multiple high-speed communication networks. Diagnostic, prognostic, and health management (DPHM) modules are embedded within the robot at the various control levels. Each DPHM module measures, controls, and records DPHM data for the respective control level/connected device in a location that is accessible over the networks or via an external device. A method of controlling the robot includes embedding a plurality of the DPHM modules within multiple control levels of the distributed controller, using the DPHM modules to measure DPHM data within each of the control levels, and recording the DPHM data in a location that is accessible over at least one of the high-speed communication networks.

Such a manual grading process is an impediment to both students and instructors. Students have to wait for several days to get feedback, and instructors may spend valuable time evaluating trivial aspects of the assignment. As seen with software courses, an automated grading system can significantly improve the insights available to the instructor and encourage students to learn quickly with iterative testing. We have designed and implemented EmbedInsight, an automated grading system for embedded system courses that accommodates a wide variety of experimental setups and is scalable to MOOC-style courses. EmbedInsight employs a modular web services design that separates the user interface and the experimental setup that evaluates student assignments. We deployed and evaluated EmbedInsight for our university embedded systems course. We show that our system scales well to a large number of submissions, and students are satisfied with their overall experience.

We give a classification of embedded smooth projective varieties swept out by rational homogeneous varieties whose Picard number and codimension are one.

A surface is called a tube if its level-sets with respect to some coordinate function (the axis of the surface) are compact. Any tube of zero mean curvature has an invariant, the so-called flow vector. We study how the geometry of the Gaussian image of a higher-dimensional minimal tube M is controlled by the angle alpha(M) between the axis and the flow vector of M. We prove that the diameter of the Gauss image of M is at least 2alpha(M). As a consequence we derive an estimate on the length of a two-dimensional minimal tube M in terms of alpha(\M) and the total Gaussian curvature of M.

What they are not great at is providing an easy-to-learn environment for new programmers. As a part of a middle school robotics course based on Lego, I've developed a new language, Snek, which runs on these machines. Snek can run in as little as 32kB of ROM and 2kB of RAM. It provides a simpler, safer, easier to explore environment than C++. Snek is a subset of the Python language and comes with a host-based IDE written in Python that runs on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. This presentation will describe the Snek language along with a few of the interesting implementation details including: * A new parser generator, lola, that generates a parser 1/10 the size of bison * An in-place compacting garbage collector * A fine hack for representing values in 32 bits that includes 32-bit floats * Some challenges with Python syntax and semantics which make it difficult to fit into a small environment. There will also be a demonstration of a few Snek-based Lego robots along with a description of how Snek has been integrated into the classroom environment. Comparisons with other embedded Python implementations will also be provided, including Micro Python, Circuit Python and full Python running on systems like the Raspberry PI. Attendees will learn something about how interpreted Python implementations operate, how Python can be used in embedded systems and what teaching programming to middle school students (10-14 years old) is like. Snek is a subset of Python which runs on Arduino hardware. It has been designed as part of a programming class for people ages 12-14 where the students build robots using Lego and program them in multiple languages. Matra Marconi Space (MMS) occupies a leading place in Europe in the domain of satellite and space data processing systems. The maturity of the knowledge-based systems (KBS) technology, the theoretical and practical experience acquired in the development of prototype, pre-operational and operational applications, make it possible today to consider the wide operational deployment of KBS's in space applications. In this perspective, MMS has to prepare the introduction of the new methods and support tools that will form the basis of the development of such systems. This paper introduces elements of the MMS methodology initiatives in the domain and the main rationale that motivated the approach. These initiatives develop along two main axes: knowledge engineering methods and tools, and a hybrid method approach for coexisting knowledge-based and conventional developments.

The use of embedded support devices (ESDs) has been studied in previous research that has unfortunately demanded introspection and reflection on one's own cognitive functioning. In contrast, eye movement registration measures the attentional focus of students on specific text parts regardless of whether or not the student is conscious of this focus. Earlier research has indicated that ESDs are used at a deep level, and not superficially read. Eleven college students read slides from a chapter of a governmental law course from the Open University of the Netherlands. Eye movements were monitored through the corneal reflection/pupil center technique and computer analysis. Eye movement patterns were compared for text with ESDs and text without ESDs. The average reading time per word was in line with expectations for most ESDs. Every ESD was looked at least once by each student. Limitations and possibilities for improvement of the research technique are discussed. Five figures and six tables illustrate study findings. (Contains 67 references.) (SLD)

An attempt is made to elaborate a theoretical base about the functions and effects of embedded support devices (ESDs), considering the extent to which students actually use ESDs. ESDs are a set of activating, structuring, and motivating extras in study materials that are designed to support the individual study process. The report describes the set of ESDs that helps define the didactical elaboration of distance education courses at the Open University of the Netherlands (OU). Earlier research related to ESDs is reviewed, and a theoretical base is proposed. This base, which draws on a cognitive psychological framework, is then used to define the functions and the effects of ESDs, with a further description of methods used to research effects of ESDs. The framework takes into account the role of the reading process, motivation, individual differences, and the task environment. Seven figures and four tables illustrate the discussion. Two appendixes present information about OU publications and key concepts in the research. (Contains 108 references.) (SLD)

The focus of this research was to examine the perceived effectiveness of the Practical Assessment Exploration System (PAES) (J. Swisher, 1987) for making educational decisions at the instructional program level for students with disabilities across groups of teachers who have various levels of familiarity with the PAES. The PAES is a functional vocational skills curriculum with an embedded assessment of vocational potential. Tasks included in the curriculum are representative of business, home economics, and industrial education, and they provide students with opportunities to complete projects that are simulations of entry-level job tasks. Educators familiar with the PAES completed a survey about its use. Of the responses, 104 were included in the sample, with only 102 included in some analyses. Respondents generally perceived the PAES as more useful for making decisions related to transition planning; aptitude/achievement tests were considered more useful for making decisions associated with general education placements. Responses did not indicate significant differences between the two approaches for making statements about the present level of performance on the student's individualized education plan. Ultimately, the results suggest that students with disabilities are not served well by tests developed for their nondisabled peers. (Contains 7 tables and 33 references.) (SLD)

The Department of Defense (DOD) fought a similar battle with members of the media more than a decade ago with the creation of its embedded reporter program. This thesis explores the following question: Can first response agencies and journalists in the United States adopt an embedded journalist program for domestic terrorist or mass-shooting events? The research reviewed the DOD's embedded reporter program and explored potential modifications for use within the United States. The thesis finds that although it is possible to create a collaborative embedded reporter program for use within the United States, it may be more feasible to adopt portions of the program such as placing an embargo on all tactical operations, creating a formal media training program, and implementing media credentials.

The conventional Lorenz-Mie formalism is extended to the scattering process associated with a coated sphere embedded in an absorbing medium. It is shown that apparent and inherent scattering cross sections of a scattering particle, which are identical in the case of transparent host medium, are different if the host medium is absorptive. Here the inherent single-scattering properties are derived from the near-field information whereas the corresponding apparent counterparts are derived from the far-field asymptotic form of the scattered wave with scaling of host absorption that is assumed to be in an exponential form. The formality extinction and scattering efficiencies defined in the same manner as in the conventional sense can be unbounded. For a nonabsorptive particle embedded in an absorbing medium, the effect of host absorption on the phase matrix elements associated with polarization is significant. This effect, however, is largely reduced for strongly absorptive particles such as soot. For soot particles coated with water, the impurity can substantially reduce the single-scattering albedo of the particle if the size parameter is small. For water-coating soot and hollow ice spheres, it is shown that the phase matrix elements -P(sub 12)/P(sub 11) and P(sub 33)/P(sub 11) are unique if the shell is thin, as compared with the case for thick shell. Furthermore, the radiative transfer equation regarding a multidisperse particle system in an absorbing medium is discussed. It is illustrated that the conventional computation algorithms can be applied to solve the multiple scattering process if the scaled apparent single-scattering properties are applied.

This paper describes an embedded approach to learner support in online English language courses. The support model is based on language acquisition, transactional distance, and self-regulated learning theories. Based on these theories, courses were designed to provide the interaction necessary for academic English language gains, decrease the transactional distance between the teacher and learner, and assist learners in developing the ability to control the factors that affect their learning; in other words, to be self-regulated learners. The latter is critical for those who lack the autonomy needed for successful distance learning. In this paper, three course activities are described and analyzed to demonstrate how the embedded support model responds to the needs of diverse learners and assists them in achieving identified outcomes. The courses were designed for off-site international students enrolled in traditional English-speaking higher education institutions.

Two recent studies by Biancarosa et al. and by Saunders et al. have finally demonstrated that "job-embedded, sustained professional development" can significantly improve student achievement. But there's a catch. In both studies, effective professional development (PD) strategies were successful only under certain circumstances or only in some schools and classrooms. The determining factor was not the quality of the PD itself, but rather the conditions under which it was delivered. It turns out that job-embedded PD can be highly effective, but only when there is a sufficient infrastructure in place to support it. The TAP system, which is managed and supported by the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET), incorporates both of the strategies that the research studies have found to be potentially effective--"collaborative learning teams and instructional coaching." But TAP also takes the next critical step by helping schools create an infrastructure that supports high-quality PD and ensures that the activities ultimately deliver positive results, both for teachers and for their students. Building on recent research, this paper describes how the TAP system enables schools to support, oversee, and reinforce job-embedded PD so that teachers and students consistently benefit from it. This paper also describes how effective PD can be aligned with teacher evaluation systems to better ensure that teachers receive specific feedback to support improvements in their practice. Cutter radius compensation (CRC) plays a very important role in the NC system. This article discusses the principle and method of radius compensation. It introduces the details of linear motion control algorithm of left and right cutter compensation according to G code instructions, and the implementation and processing methods at every stage of building up, up process and cancellation of cutter compensation. It is implemented with embedded system. In the end a specific example of implementation is given. Experimental results show that the algorithm is correct, and having higher efficiency.
