This thesis presents a distance-learning tool, which provides a self-sufficient application that allows one to implement online courses for electrical engineering. A major emphasis is placed on replacing simplistic multiple-choice or true-false test questions. A system named, Distance Learning Tools for Online Tests (DLTOT) is designed, modeled and implemented. The implementation is based on the Java programming language, using Servlets and Java Server Pages (JSP), three-tier technology and Commercial Off-the-Shelf (Costs) products, namely, an Apache web server, Tomcat Application server, Microsoft Access, Mathematica, WebMathematica and JSP/ Servlet technology. DLTOT is able to control student access, to allow interaction with the student during the course, and to present a challenging test, which is easily graded by the application itself.

In 1992, the Council of Colleges in Quebec undertook an analysis of proposed revisions to the electrical/electronic technology programs offered by the province's public colleges. The planned revision affects a large number of programs and colleges and would have important repercussions outside of the domain of the physical sciences. Part 1 of the analysis identifies the major proposed changes: (1) the realignment and clustering of programs into industrial, service, and research and development areas; (2) the creation of a new research and development oriented program in electronic design, and the addition of several new options in existing programs; (3) the revision of the program elements common to all electronics majors; (4) reduction of admissions requirements; and (5) the application of a more synthesized and integrated perspective. This section concludes with a discussion of some of the problems inherent in such major program revisions. Part 2 analyses the proposed revision in terms of its socioeconomic implications and effects on students; the coherence of the proposed programs; program balance; access to programs in the diverse specialities given that all majors will not be available at all public colleges; the transfer implications of the new electronic design program; workplace safety concerns; and practical training. Finally, part 3 discusses issues related to piloting the new programs and preparing for the full implementation of the revision. A summary of the major recommendations of the Council of Colleges is provided. (AC)

The John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field (GRC) in Cleveland, OH and the Sundstrand Corporation in Rockford, IL have designed and developed an Engineering Model (EM) Electrical Power Control Unit (EPCU) for the Fluids Combustion Facility, (FCF) experiments to be flown on the International Space Station (ISS). The EPCU will be used as the power interface to the ISS power distribution system for the FCF's space experiments'test and telemetry hardware. Furthermore. it is proposed to be the common power interface for all experiments. The EPCU is a three kilowatt 12OVdc-to-28Vdc converter utilizing three independent Power Converter Units (PCUs), each rated at 1kWe (36Adc @ 28Vdc) which are paralleled and synchronized. Each converter may be fed from one of two ISS power channels. The 28Vdc loads are connected to the EPCU output via 48 solid-state and current-limiting switches, rated at 4Adc each. These switches may be paralleled to supply any given load up to the 108Adc normal operational limit of the paralleled converters. The EPCU was designed in this manner to maximize allocated-power utilization. to shed loads autonomously, to provide fault tolerance. and to provide a flexible power converter and control module to meet various ISS load demands. Tests of the EPCU in the Power Systems Facility testbed at GRC reveal that the overall converted-power efficiency, is approximately 89% with a nominal-input voltage of 12OVdc and a total load in the range of 4O% to 110% rated 28Vdc load. (The PCUs alone have an efficiency of approximately 94.5%). Furthermore, the EM unit passed all flight-qualification level (and beyond) vibration tests, passed ISS EMI (conducted, radiated. and susceptibility) requirements. successfully operated for extended periods in a thermal/vacuum chamber, was integrated with a proto-flight experiment and passed all stability and functional requirements.
