You might think green hydrogen and decarbonizing the energy grid have a lot in common, but one of our guests is not so sure. David Neira, Energy Co-ordinator for the Ecology Action Centre, shares his concerns.

The replication of prior research is ostensibly a cornerstone of the scientific process and valued as such in ecology and evolutionary biology (EEB). However, it appears replication studies are nowhere near as prevalent in the published literature as might be expected if they were a routine part of building confidence in research findings. This may be due in part to the widespread perception of replication studies as a low-status activity. Journal and publisher policies have an important role in shaping researchers’ behaviour and willingness to conduct and publish replications. Many journals project a preference for novel methods, findings, or ideas that discourage, and sometimes overtly preclude, submission of replication studies, while others actively invite them. Given this variety, authors have an interest in determining the extent to which replication studies are welcomed by their target journal, but this can be hard to identify from journal websites. We will examine what information about journal publishing policies and preferences with respect to replication studies can be found in the scope and author guidelines sections of 233 journals classified under Ecology or Evolutionary Biology in the Web of Science Journal Citation Reports.

Knowledge about ecology and environmental education (EE) constitutes a basic tool for promoting a sustainable future, and was a target area of the BIOHEAD-Citizen Project. School textbooks were considered as representative sources of evidence in terms of ecology and environmental education, and were used for comparison among the countries participating in BIOHEAD-Citizen Project. The main goal of the analysis was to highlight the implicit and explicit values conveyed both by images and text in the respective textbooks from each country. This paper presents the theoretical background that guided the process of designing and development of several grids that were then used for analyzing samples of textbooks from 19 different countries. The paper also provides brief information indicating how EE is contextualized within each participating country's curriculum. (Contains 4 tables.)

Abstract : Language has not been a category of analysis in the study of globalization -- an extraordinary fact, considering the power language exercises in shaping global processes and possibilities, in both war and peace. This is the first paper in a two-part series describing the patterns of inquiry used in ecology. Ecological knowledge and research are analyzed in terms of two sets of concepts: ecological problem areas, and principles of biological inquiry. Problem areas identified are classification and taxonomy, energetics, nutrition and metabolism, genecology, and distribution. It is argued, using illustrations from the ecological literature, that different problem areas require different data and exhibit different methods and techniques. Four principles of biological inquiry are identified: the principle of antecedent-consequent, the principle of structure-function, the principle of homeostasis, and the principle of regulation. The effects of different principles on the modes of inquiry within a problem area are illustrated by comparing ecological research which focuses on the individual as the unit (an application of the principle of antecedent-consequent) with research that treats the community as a unit (using the principle of structure-function). This is one of a series of units for environmental education developed by the Highline Public Schools. This unit for elementary school children is designed to help bring more art into the classroom and to help students become more aware of their environment. Included are six lessons and a bibliography of suggested student references. Each lesson outline includes the concept of the lesson, materials needed, notes to the teacher, procedure, evaluative activities, and suggestions for additional activities. The materials were tried and evaluated; evaluation data may be obtained from the Highline Public Schools. (RH)
