Cylindrical specimens with circumferential grooves have been used for many years to assess the fatigue notch sensitivity of materials, and have been extensively employed in investigations involving the four major types of fatigue loading conditions--axial, plane bending, rotating bending and torsion. By adopting different radii at the root of the notch the severity of the stress concentrating effect under load can be readily altered. Although parallel sided notches have been used in some instances, the majority of circumferentially notched specimens have incorporated a Vee-form with a flank angle of between about 45 degree and 90 degree. Because of the increasing requirement to use fatigue specimens which are more representative of actual design features, and also to cope with the greater current emphasis on the measurement of fatigue crack propagation rates--for which edge or centrally notched specimens in flat material are better suited--the use of circumferentially notched specimens to obtain axial load fatigue data for structural fatigue applications has declined. However, circumferential notches have particular applications in the case of shafts and axles subjected to torsional or rotating bending conditions. In addition, circumferentially notched specimens tested in relatively simple rotating bending fatigue machines, can provide useful information when making initial appraisals and comparisons of the fatigue behaviour of materials, processes, etc. (Author)

As was shown in quant-ph/0405028, the state of a tunneling particle can be uniquely presented as a coherent superposition of two states to describe alternative sub-processes, transmission and reflection. In this paper, on the basis of the stationary wave functions for these sub-processes, we give new definitions of the dwell times for transmission and reflection. In the case of rectangular potential barriers the dwell times are obtained explicitly. In contrast with the well-known B\"{u}ttiker's dwell-time, our dwell time for transmission increases exponentially, for the under-barrier tunneling, with increasing the barrier's width. By our approach the well-known Hartman effect is rather an artifact resulted from an improper interpretation of the wave-packet tunneling and experimental data, but not a real physical effect accompanying the tunneling phenomenon.

@mcrpenetrated artist/researcher/activist Patrick Baxter's essay film A Place Where Ghosts Dwell (2017) explores the consequences of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC) on the Republic of Ireland & subsequent property collapse on a marginalised rural town (his hometown, Longford) through the lens of strange ruinous spaces popularly known as ghost estates. Ghost estates resulted from a decade of rampant speculation followed by what is cited as one of the worst property collapse in recorded history, and Longford as an entity with little real fiscal foundation suffered acutely from a false economy predicated on building housing estates endlessly, everywhere, fueling societal discourse and desire, and lining many pockets. Coining the term 'ghost developments' to account for the vast swathes of failed, abandoned, and vacant commercial developments that littered the country's physical environment, these structures became the principal visual symbol of the general trauma the fall of the Celtic Tiger perpetuated. The unfinished facades of these generic estates told a story of a society that bought into a myth, of broken dreams and of financial hardships to be borne by generations. Each abandoned luxury hotel, office block and high-rise apartment complex development screamed of unchecked greed and economic folly. The spaces themselves were both visually and sonically rich, and the film immerses the viewer in their sensory attributes and their troubling yet beguiling visual qualities that allows Baxter to inject a horror film aesthetic into the non-fiction narrative form. Some narrative devices such as the archive footage, certain sound design motifs like the creepy, distorted ice-cream sound, and certain repeated, degraded or manipulated images are designed to reproduce narrative as a form of reverie - I dreamt of a place and some peculiar spaces, or was it a nightmare. The film’s stylistic tendencies become re-occurring motifs; chapter headings and poignant quotes to lead the narrative, the use of split-screen often alternating between colour and black & white, cutting between disparate resolutions and degrading of footage, use of time-lapse and slow-motion, inserting colour bars between shots or sequences, sudden shifts from hand-held to static framing. This is a very subjective film, the filmmaker’s reading of place, these incongruous spaces and the politics that shape them.  The subjective voice of the author is foregrounded by the dual narration further reinforces an overall aesthetic of the essay film form, a poetic intervention into cinematic storytelling that is documentary on only the most cursory level. Breaking with a lot of mono-form documentary evident at the time that insisted on breakneck speed, consciously hip woozy handheld cinematography, and clearly defined narrative imperatives/resolutions supporting an unambiguous worldview,  ’…Where Ghost Dwell’ has a very singular pacing and structure that attempts to hold the frame, uses slow pans, zooms and static framing, and complex their rhythmic ritual repetitions to realise the film’s decentring narrative strategy and visual language. By integrating self-reflexive tools, approaches drawn from ethnographic methods, modes signifying the essayist aesthetic, alongside effects and devices common to the music video, the film develops it’s own film language to tell you the story of the place, it’s troubled ruinous spaces, and the filmmaker’s ambiguous feeling about representing his home. As with the multi-disciplinary practice Patrick would bring to the transgressive Queer mixed form art-space @mcrpenetrated, the film is deeply concerned with the political dynamics of place, space, art & identity, and similarly uses an array of mediums and storytelling devices to reveal the subject. Background: Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) required the use of military personnel for multiple combat deployments. Dwell time, or the period between deployments, may confer a protective effect against deployment-related mental health disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Methods: U.S. Marine Corps personnel who deployed in support of OIF once and twice were identified from electronic military deployment records. New-onset mental health diagnoses (ICD-9-CM 290?319), including PTSD, were identified from inpatient and outpatient medical databases. For those with two deployments, dwell-to-deployment ratio (DDR) was calculated as the length of time between deployments divided by the length of first deployment. Results: Overall, rates of PTSD were higher among Marines with two deployments, though there was no similar association with other mental health disorders. Among those with two deployments, increased DDR was associated with lower rates of PTSD and other mental health disorders after adjusting for age and military rank. Conclusions: The present study provides evidence that longer dwell time between deployments may protect against PTSD and other postdeployment mental disorders. Because current operational tempo necessitates multiple deployments, future research should focus on the role of dwell time in adverse health outcomes, and the feasibility and impact of future dwelltime policies.

Early in his life Samuel Butler began to carry a note-book and to write down in it anything he wanted to remember; it might be something he heard some one say, more commonly it was something he said himself. In one of these notes he gives a reason for making them:<br></br>“One’s thoughts fly so fast that one must shoot them; it is no use trying to put salt on their tails.”<br></br>So he bagged as many as he could hit and preserved them, re-written on loose sheets of paper which constituted a sort of museum stored with the wise, beautiful, and strange creatures that were continually winging their way across the field of his vision. As he became a more expert marksman his collection increased and his museum grew so crowded that he wanted a catalogue. In 1874 he started an index, and this led to his reconsidering the notes, destroying those that he remembered having used in his published books and re-writing the remainder. The re-writing shortened some but it lengthened others and suggested so many new ones that the index was soon of little use and there seemed to be no finality about it. In 1891 he attached the problem afresh and made it a rule to spend an hour every morning re-editing his notes and keeping his index up to date. At his death, in 1902, he left five bound volumes, with the contents dated and indexed, about 225 pages of closely written sermon paper to each volume, and more than enough unbound and unindexed sheets to made a sixth volume of equal size. - Summary by Henry Festing Jones

In the struggle for existence man has competed, not only with his fellow-men, but also with wild animals and disease- parasites. The fight against beasts was decided long before the historic period, but parasites have always been, and still are, formidable opponents. Whole tribes have been wiped out by plague, kala-azar and measles; and even when the disease-parasite does not win such a decisive victory, it often weakens a nation so much that the latter falls an easy victim to its healthier neighbours. This volume will show how malaria played a part in the decline of the ancient Greeks, along with statistics presented from the Greek Anti Malarial League, and evaluation of malarial literature.
