7A Framework For The Local Information Dynamics Of Distributed Computation In Complex Systems

By

The nature of distributed computation has often been described in terms of the component operations of universal computation: information storage, transfer and modification. We introduce the first complete framework that quantifies each of these individual information dynamics on a local scale within a system, and describes the manner in which they interact to create non-trivial computation where "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts". We apply the framework to cellular automata, a simple yet powerful model of distributed computation. In this application, the framework is demonstrated to be the first to provide quantitative evidence for several important conjectures about distributed computation in cellular automata: that blinkers embody information storage, particles are information transfer agents, and particle collisions are information modification events. The framework is also used to investigate and contrast the computations conducted by several well-known cellular automata, highlighting the importance of information coherence in complex computation. Our results provide important quantitative insights into the fundamental nature of distributed computation and the dynamics of complex systems, as well as impetus for the framework to be applied to the analysis and design of other systems.

8NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20020048446: Accounting And Accountability For Distributed And Grid Systems

By

While the advent of distributed and grid computing systems will open new opportunities for scientific exploration, the reality of such implementations could prove to be a system administrator's nightmare. A lot of effort is being spent on identifying and resolving the obvious problems of security, scheduling, authentication and authorization. Lurking in the background, though, are the largely unaddressed issues of accountability and usage accounting: (1) mapping resource usage to resource users; (2) defining usage economies or methods for resource exchange; (3) describing implementation standards that minimize and compartmentalize the tasks required for a site to participate in a grid.

9NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20040015204: Development Of A Dynamically Configurable, Object-Oriented Framework For Distributed, Multi-modal Computational Aerospace Systems Simulation: Second Year Progress Report

By

Mesh generation has long been recognized as a bottleneck in the CFD process. While much research on automating the volume mesh generation process have been relatively successful, these methods rely on appropriate initial surface triangulation to work properly. Surface discretization has been one of the least automated steps in computational simulation due to its dependence on implicitly defined CAD surfaces and curves. Differences in CAD peometry engines manifest themselves in discrepancies in their interpretation of the same entities. This lack of "good" geometry causes significant problems for mesh generators, requiring users to "repair" the CAD geometry before mesh generation. The problem is exacerbated when CAD geometry is translated to other forms (e.g., IGES )which do not include important topological and construction information in addition to entity geometry. One technique to avoid these problems is to access the CAD geometry directly from the mesh generating software, rather than through files. By accessing the geometry model (not a discretized version) in its native environment, t h s a proach avoids translation to a format which can deplete the model of topological information. Our approach to enable models developed in the Denali software environment to directly access CAD geometry and functions is through an Application Programming Interface (API) known as CAPRI. CAPRI provides a layer of indirection through which CAD-specific data may be accessed by an application program using CAD-system neutral C and FORTRAN language function calls. CAPRI supports a general set of CAD operations such as truth testing, geometry construction and entity queries.

12Enhancement Of Stochastic Resonance In Distributed Systems Due To A Selective Coupling

By

Recent massive numerical simulations have shown that the response of a "stochastic resonator" is enhanced as a consequence of spatial coupling. Similar results have been analytically obtained in a reaction-diffusion model, using "nonequilibrium potential" techniques. We now consider a field-dependent diffusivity and show that the "selectivity" of the coupling is more efficient for achieving stochastic-resonance enhancement than its overall value in the constant-diffusivity case.

17NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19930015941: Robo-line Storage: Low Latency, High Capacity Storage Systems Over Geographically Distributed Networks

By

Rapid advances in high performance computing are making possible more complete and accurate computer-based modeling of complex physical phenomena, such as weather front interactions, dynamics of chemical reactions, numerical aerodynamic analysis of airframes, and ocean-land-atmosphere interactions. Many of these 'grand challenge' applications are as demanding of the underlying storage system, in terms of their capacity and bandwidth requirements, as they are on the computational power of the processor. A global view of the Earth's ocean chlorophyll and land vegetation requires over 2 terabytes of raw satellite image data. In this paper, we describe our planned research program in high capacity, high bandwidth storage systems. The project has four overall goals. First, we will examine new methods for high capacity storage systems, made possible by low cost, small form factor magnetic and optical tape systems. Second, access to the storage system will be low latency and high bandwidth. To achieve this, we must interleave data transfer at all levels of the storage system, including devices, controllers, servers, and communications links. Latency will be reduced by extensive caching throughout the storage hierarchy. Third, we will provide effective management of a storage hierarchy, extending the techniques already developed for the Log Structured File System. Finally, we will construct a protototype high capacity file server, suitable for use on the National Research and Education Network (NREN). Such research must be a Cornerstone of any coherent program in high performance computing and communications.

18Microsoft Research Video 135890: Incentive Design In Distributed-Work Systems: Image Labeling Games And Question And Answer Forums

By

In recent years, there has been a great deal of progress in "Games with a Purpose," interactive games that users play because they are fun, with the added benefit that they are doing useful work in the process. The ESP game, developed by von Ahn and Dabbish, is an example of such a game devised to label images on the web. Our interest is in understanding the effect that qualitative changes in preference structure can have on the generation of useful work. To this end, we model the ESP game as a two-stage game of incomplete information and characterize the equilibrium behavior of the model. Under a "match-early" preference model, capturing current game dynamics, we show that focusing on low effort, higher frequency words is a Bayesian-Nash equilibrium. We establish more desirable outcomes of focusing on high effort, lower frequency words under an alternate model of "rare-words" preferences, consistent with a game structure in which players receive more points for infrequent words. The technical results require the use of a stochastic dominance argument and impose minimal requirements on word distributions. More generally, I am interested in the possibility of formal incentive design for problems of human computation and peer production systems. As a second example, I will discuss results on user behavior in question-and-answer forums, where the challenge that we consider is to promote early reporting of information by participants. We offer alternatives to the "best answer" scoring rule that promotes early participation, even in the presence of a complementary information space, where the value of each successive item provided to the asker is greater than the previous. Indigo combines and extends the capabilities of existing distributed systems technologies to deliver a unified development experience spanning distance, topologies, hosting models, protocols, and security models. This session of the 2005 Microsoft Research Faculty Summit explores the details of Indigo and how the Ohio State University Medical Center is using Microsoft Indigo framework and open specifications—such as WS-Security, WS-Trust, WS-RM (Reliable Messaging), and WS-AtomicTransaction—to build interoperable, secure, scalable, reliable, and maintainable healthcare systems based on a service-oriented architecture and SOAP services. Two systems are discussed: one for remotely monitoring, recording, and replaying the vital signs data being generated in the operating rooms of the medical center, and another for patient/resource tracking based on the existing WiFi infrastructure at the center. Technical details, lessons learned, best practices, and benefits of using these technologies are also discussed. ©2005 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 20Space-Time Storage Codes For Wireless Distributed Storage Systems

By

Distributed storage systems (DSSs) have gained a lot of interest recently, thanks to their robustness and scalability compared to single-device storage. Majority of the related research has exclusively concerned the network layer. At the same time, the number of users of, e.g., peer-to-peer (p2p) and device-to-device (d2d) networks as well as proximity based services is growing rapidly, and the mobility of users is considered more and more important. This motivates, in contrast to the existing literature, the study of the physical layer functionality of wireless distributed storage systems. In this paper, we take the first step towards protecting the storage repair transmissions from physical layer errors when the transmission takes place over a fading channel. To this end, we introduce the notion of a space-time storage code, drawing together the aspects of network layer and physical layer functionality and resulting in cross-layer robustness. It is also pointed out that existing space-time codes are too complex to be utilized in storage networks when the number of helpers involved is larger than the number of receive antennas at the newcomer or data collector, hence creating a call for less complex transmission protocols.

22Maintaining High Availability In Distributed Mobile Systems

By

Distributed Mobile Systems often require the ability to continue working, even when a major system component fails or there is a fault in the system. In some situations when a distributed mobile system is used, the difference between success and failure could mean the difference between life and death. Therefore, distributed mobile systems that require a high availability must be able to survive faults and resist failures. A user of a distributed mobile system depends on the ability of the system to share information between the other users of the system. The information and its delivery may be the most important parts of the system, whether it is a data file, picture, or instant message. A survey will be conducted of the different failsafe and fault-tolerant techniques available then grouped for potential effectiveness and cost efficiency. An experiment with a distributed mobile system and different combinations of failsafe and fault-tolerant techniques will be used to validate the effectiveness of the techniques. The expected result of the experiments is a higher availability rating than the system had before the experiments. TwiddleNet, a distributed mobile system with a high availability requirement, will be used as the platform for experimentation.

23Managing Distributed Systems With Smart Subscriptions

By

We describe an event-based, publish-and-subscribe mechanism based on using 'smart subscriptions' to recognize weakly-structured events. We present a hierarchy of subscription languages (propositional, predicate, temporal and agent) and algorithms for efficiently recognizing event matches. This mechanism has been applied to the management of distributed applications.

24A Model For The Onset Of Transport In Systems With Distributed Thresholds For Conduction

By

We present a model supported by simulation to explain the effect of temperature on the conduction threshold in disordered systems. Arrays with randomly distributed local thresholds for conduction occur in systems ranging from superconductors to metal nanocrystal arrays. Thermal fluctuations provide the energy to overcome some of the local thresholds, effectively erasing them as far as the global conduction threshold for the array is concerned. We augment this thermal energy reasoning with percolation theory to predict the temperature at which the global threshold reaches zero. We also study the effect of capacitive nearest-neighbor interactions on the effective charging energy. Finally, we present results from Monte Carlo simulations that find the lowest-cost path across an array as a function of temperature. The main result of the paper is the linear decrease of conduction threshold with increasing temperature: $V_t(T) = V_t(0) (1 - 4.8 k_BT P(0)/ p_c) $, where $1/P(0)$ is an effective charging energy that depends on the particle radius and interparticle distance, and $p_c$ is the percolation threshold of the underlying lattice. The predictions of this theory compare well to experiments in one- and two-dimensional systems.

26Enhanced Cyberspace Defense With Real-time Distributed Systems Using Covert Channel Publish-subscribe Broker Pattern Communications

By

In this thesis, we propose a novel cyberspace defense solution to the growing sophistication of threats facing networks within the Department of Defense. Current network defense strategies, including traditional intrusion detection and firewall-based perimeter defenses, are ineffective against increasingly sophisticated social engineering attacks such as spear-phishing which exploit individuals with targeted information. These asymmetric attacks are able to bypass current network defense technologies allowing adversaries extended and often unrestricted access to portions of the enterprise. Network defense strategies are hampered by solutions favoring network-centric designs which disregard the security requirements of the specific data and information on the networks. Our solution leverages specific technology characteristics from traditional network defense systems and real-time distributed systems using publish-subscribe broker patterns to form the foundation of a full-spectrum cyber operations capability. Building on this foundation, we present the addition of covert channel communications within the distributed systems framework to protect sensitive Command and Control and Battle Management messaging from adversary intercept and exploitation. Through this combined approach, DoD and Service network defense professionals will be able to meet sophisticated cyberspace threats head-on while simultaneously protecting the data and information critical to warfighting Commands, Services and Agencies.

By

"Transforming Science Assessment: Systems for Innovation," is a series of resources designed to provide state education leaders with: (1) Information about how states are currently pursuing statewide assessment systems in science; (2) Analyses of what features influence different approaches, with an eye to supporting state leaders as they make their own decisions regarding science assessment systems; (3) Detailed state profiles that highlight how and why some states have made decisions regarding designing and enacting different examples of systems of assessment; and (4) A how-to guide for policymakers looking to enact systems of assessment in science. This resource discusses two models that are emerging as common approaches to distributed assessment systems: those that are supported by the state and those that are supported by partner organizations.

31Accelerated Cyclic Reduction: A Distributed-Memory Fast Direct Solver For Structured Linear Systems

By

We present Accelerated Cyclic Reduction (ACR), a distributed-memory fast direct solver for rank-compressible block tridiagonal linear systems arising from the discretization of elliptic operators, developed here for three dimensions. Algorithmic synergies between Cyclic Reduction and hierarchical matrix arithmetic operations result in a solver that has $O(k~N \log N~(\log N + k^2))$ arithmetic complexity and $O(k~N \log N)$ memory footprint, where $N$ is the number of degrees of freedom and $k$ is the rank of a typical off-diagonal block, and which exhibits substantial concurrency. We provide a baseline for performance and applicability by comparing with the multifrontal method where hierarchical semi-separable matrices are used for compressing the fronts, and with algebraic multigrid. Over a set of large-scale elliptic systems with features of nonsymmetry and indefiniteness, the robustness of the direct solvers extends beyond that of the multigrid solver, and relative to the multifrontal approach ACR has lower or comparable execution time and memory footprint. ACR exhibits good strong and weak scaling in a distributed context and, as with any direct solver, is advantageous for problems that require the solution of multiple right-hand sides.

32Distributed Dynamic Event-Triggered Control For Multi-Agent Systems

By

We propose two distributed dynamic triggering laws to solve the consensus problem for multi-agent systems with event-triggered control. Compared with existing triggering laws, the proposed triggering laws involve internal dynamic variables which play an essential role to guarantee that the triggering time sequence does not exhibit Zeno behavior. Some existing triggering laws are special cases of our dynamic triggering laws. Under the condition that the underlying graph is undirected and connected, it is proven that the proposed dynamic triggering laws together with the event-triggered control make the state of each agent converges exponentially to the average of the agents' initial states. Numerical simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results and show that the dynamic triggering laws lead to reduction of actuation updates and inter-agent communications.

34Fault Tolerance In Distributed Systems Using Fused State Machines

By

Replication is a standard technique for fault tolerance in distributed systems modeled as deterministic finite state machines (DFSMs or machines). To correct f crash or f/2 Byzantine faults among n different machines, replication requires nf additional backup machines. We present a solution called fusion that requires just f additional backup machines. First, we build a framework for fault tolerance in DFSMs based on the notion of Hamming distances. We introduce the concept of an (f,m)-fusion, which is a set of m backup machines that can correct f crash faults or f/2 Byzantine faults among a given set of machines. Second, we present an algorithm to generate an (f,f)-fusion for a given set of machines. We ensure that our backups are efficient in terms of the size of their state and event sets. Our evaluation of fusion on the widely used MCNC'91 benchmarks for DFSMs show that the average state space savings in fusion (over replication) is 38% (range 0-99%). To demonstrate the practical use of fusion, we describe its potential application to the MapReduce framework. Using a simple case study, we compare replication and fusion as applied to this framework. While a pure replication-based solution requires 1.8 million map tasks, our fusion-based solution requires only 1.4 million map tasks with minimal overhead during normal operation or recovery. Hence, fusion results in considerable savings in state space and other resources such as the power needed to run the backup tasks.

35Data Center Server Provision: Distributed Asynchronous Control For Coupled Renewal Systems

By

This paper considers a cost minimization problem for data centers with N servers and randomly arriving service requests. A central router decides which server to use for each new request. Each server has three types of states (active, idle, setup) with different costs and time durations. The servers operate asynchronously over their own states and can choose one of multiple sleep modes when idle. We develop an online distributed control algorithm so that each server makes its own decisions, the request queues are bounded and the overall time average cost is near optimal with probability 1. The algorithm does not need probability information for the arrival rate or job sizes. Next, an improved algorithm that uses a single queue is developed via a "virtualization" technique which is shown to provide the same (near optimal) costs. Simulation experiments on a real data center traffic trace demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm compared to other existing algorithms.

36Decentralized Minimum-Cost Repair For Distributed Storage Systems

By

There have been emerging lots of applications for distributed storage systems e.g., those in wireless sensor networks or cloud storage. Since storage nodes in wireless sensor networks have limited battery, it is valuable to find a repair scheme with optimal transmission costs (e.g., energy). The optimal-cost repair has been recently investigated in a centralized way. However a centralized control mechanism may not be available or is very expensive. For the scenarios, it is interesting to study optimal-cost repair in a decentralized setup. We formulate the optimal-cost repair as convex optimization problems for the network with convex transmission costs. Then we use primal and dual decomposition approaches to decouple the problem into subproblems to be solved locally. Thus, each surviving node, collaborating with other nodes, can minimize its transmission cost such that the global cost is minimized. We further study the optimality and convergence of the algorithms. Finally, we discuss the code construction and determine the field size for finding feasible network codes in our approaches.

37Minimum BER Power Adjustment And Receiver Design For Distributed Space-Time Coded Cooperative MIMO Relaying Systems

By

An adaptive joint power allocation (JPA) and linear receiver design algorithm using the minimum bit error rate (MBER) criterion for a cooperative Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) network is proposed. The system employs multiple relays with Distributed Space-Time Coding (DSTC) schemes and an Amplify-and-Forward (AF) strategy. It is designed according to a joint constrained optimization algorithm to determine the MBER power allocation parameters and the receive filter parameters for each transmitted symbol. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm obtains performance gains compared to the equal power allocation systems and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) designs.

43Islanding Detection Of Distributed Generation Systems Using Hybrid Technique For Multi-machine System

By

Due to depletion of conventional fuels and increase in power demand, many renewable energy sources are being integrated into the electrical grid. One of the major concerns with this integration of these renewable sources with utility grid is unintentional islanding. Many techniques have been proposed to detect unintentional islanding, all of them trying to comply with the IEEE standard 1547. This paper presents an analysis of the hybrid technique to detect the islanding condition of the power system with multi-machine systems. This work aims at analysing the technique against increasing size of the system with increasing number of distributed generators by including practical voltage unbalance formula. The validity of this detection technique is verified using IEEE standard test power systems in MATLAB platform. This method can be used to identify multiple islanding conditions effectively. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the technique to detect islanding condition for multi-machine systems.

46Solution Of Regular, Sparse Triangular Linear Systems On Vector And Distributed-Memory Multiprocessors

By

This paper presents the implementations and results of a model problem, the Symmetric Successive Over-Relaxation (SSOR) simulated application benchmark from the NAS Parallel Benchmark suite for three different parallel processors. SSOR is an iterative implicit method that partitions the left hand side matrix into a lower triangular matrix and an upper triangular matrix. The machines used are an eight processor Cray Y-MP, a 32k processor Thinking Machines Corp. CM-2 and a 128 processor Intel iPSC/860. The primary difficulty in implementing SSOR on a parallel machine lies in finding enough parallelism within the triangular solves to keep a large number of processors active. A data mapping useful for distributed memory architectures is presented. The results show that the eight processor Cray Y-MP has the best performance among the three machines.

47Reconfiguration In Robust Distributed Real-time Systems Based On Global Checkpoints

By

Fast, ultra-reliable, real-time computing is fundamental in today's weapons system. Increased system throughput and reliability can be achieved by utilizing distributed systems in which a single application program executes on multiple processors, connected to a network. The distributed nature of such systems make it possible to tolerate failures and react to overloads without the application level performance degrading unacceptably. Fault tolerance in these systems typically involves fault detection and recovery. Repair following failure involves smooth integration of the repaired processor and subsequent reconfiguration. These actions must take place transparently, that is without the application program noticing it. Therefore, sufficient information must be maintained through the use of checkpointing to describe the state of the system at any time and ensure correct operation after failure/repair. This thesis investigates a possible framework for achieving a fault- tolerant realtime distributed system which provides transparent function-to-function message passing, status monitoring using periodic health messages and maintains a globally consistent system state by carrying out independent checkpointing procedures. The proposed scheme is simulated using concurrent Ada processing for a four node, twelve function, distributed system.

48Algorithmic Techniques For Several Optimization Problems Regarding Distributed Systems With Tree Topologies

By

As the development of distributed systems progresses, more and more challenges arise and the need for developing optimized systems and for optimizing existing systems from multiple perspectives becomes more stringent. In this paper I present novel algorithmic techniques for solving several optimization problems regarding distributed systems with tree topologies. I address topics like: reliability improvement, partitioning, coloring, content delivery, optimal matchings, as well as some tree counting aspects. Some of the presented techniques are only of theoretical interest, while others can be used in practical settings.

1Wonders of the Jungle

By

Book's cover

How do elephants drink? What is the Law of the Jungle at the water hole? How does an elephant baby learn to feed and learn to swim? How do they walk under water? In what order do buffaloes drink? How do buffaloes fight the tiger? These and other wild inhabitants of the Indian jungle such as pigs, wild dogs, deer, camels, bears and birds are discussed in lively stories to entertain but mainly educate children of school age. "One of the great thinkers of the world has said that all the sciences are embodied in natural history. Hence natural history should be taught to a child from an early age. Perhaps the best method of teaching it is to set forth the characteristics of animals in the form of a narrative. Then the child reads the narrative with pleasure and almost as a story, not as a tedious "lesson." In this book the animals are described in their daily life, and the main scientific facts and principles concerning each animal are woven into the narrative as a part of that daily life."
