8DTIC ADA1035665: Plain Speaking: A Theory And Grammar Of Spontaneous Discourse.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This report presents an abstract process model of 'well formed' discourse. The model is based on a hierarchical segmentation of utterances into distinct, but related and linked, context spaces. Context spaces are characterized by slots similar to case frames. The slots are functionally defined and they capture information both explicit and implicit in the dialogue. In a context space theory of discourse, a conversation is viewed as a sequence of conversational moves. A conversational move corresponds to a speaker's communicative goal. 'Support,' 'Interrupt,' and 'Challenge,' are some of the communicative goals identified in the work. All conversational moves have an associated set of preconditions which specify the requisite discourse context for their appropriate performance. Conversational moves also have a set of effects on the discourse structure, and different modes of fulfillment. A major aspect of the work is to delineate the different preconditions, effects, and modes, characterizing different types of conversational moves in a discourse. It is shown that effective communication between conversants is enabled by their following a number of well-specified rules in a discourse. These rules include choice of reference to an entity under discussion and use of clue words like 'But anyway,' and 'Incidentally.'

11ERIC EJ847270: Understanding And Exercising One's Own Grammar: Four Applications Of Linguistic And Discourse Knowledge
By ERIC
In this essay, five researchers, who are also English educators, describe the research they have crafted to improve the quality of classroom literacy education. They begin by describing their common perspective afforded by linguistics, discourse analysis and related social theory. Their framework and studies describe their action-oriented epistemology for studying key issues in novice English teacher education, experienced English teacher continuing education, writing textbook production, and Standard English teaching. The authors argue for teaching teachers and students the linguistic and discursive tools through which they can create and exercise their own grammars to generate productive social practices. (Contains 6 footnotes.)

16Gender Issues In The Lion And The Jewel By Wole Soyinka: A Linguistics-Oriented Analysis From A Systemic Functional Grammar And Critical Discourse Analysis Perspective
By Bahram Kazemian
The term gender is relatively new in such disciplines as Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, Sociolinguistics, let alone with Literary Linguistics. As opposed to sex which refers to biological characteristics, gender is culture based. Nowadays, it is actively recommended to include aspects of gender in whatever project we undertake. The present article is an attempt at probing the language used by male and female characters in Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel to see how gender issues are grounded in the play to let it play its didactic role. The aim is to pinpoint the way female and male are represented through a lexicogramatical analysis with a special focus on its transitivity system as suggested by Halliday (1994) to enter Wole Soyinka’s characters’ inner and outer world as they use language to enable them ‘to build a mental picture of reality, to make sense of what goes on around them and inside them’ (1994:106). That Soyinka considers or does not consider women or just recounts the situation of women in Yoruba traditional societies is what is at stake in this study. The results of the investigation in the light of transitivity and Critical Discourse Analysis shows that Soyinka, consciously or unconsciously has represented male characters as strong, powerful and metaphorically as a lion, a symbol of irresistible power. They are also portrayed as initiator, doer of something, and commander in chief, the king while their female counterparts (Sidi, Sadikou) are represented as goals and/or beneficiaries of men’s actions and associated with processes of sensing and of emotion.

19DTIC ADA1035660: Plain Speaking: A Theory And Grammar Of Spontaneous Discourse.

23ERIC ED398741: Discourse Analysis And Instructional Flexibility: A Pragmatic Grammar.
By ERIC
A case study investigated the pragmatics of language classroom communication, using an analytical framework developed in an earlier study with 30 expert language teachers at the junior high school level. The case study subject was also an expert teacher. Analysis focused on the teacher's transformations of intention in language instruction, based on the immediate teaching situation, to classroom learning processes. In the study, the teacher was interviewed using a semi-directed standard protocol to obtain task-centered retrospective verbalizations, and also using a simulation protocol to obtain concurrent verbalizations. Following this, classroom interaction was observed. Verbalizations were analyzed for specific indicators, including task domains, connectors establishing pragmatic links, organizers, and concepts. The analysis of teacher transformations from intention to actualization is presented in narrative form, with examples of teacher verbalizations. A variety of transformation types was found. Implications for use of this methodology and the results are discussed. Contains 53 references. (MSE)

28DTIC ADA126353: Two Discourse Generators. A Grammar And A Lexicon For A Text-Production System.
By Defense Technical Information Center
Computer generation of text, linguistically justified grammars, KDS, PROTEUS, natural language, systemic grammar, text generation. Computer generation of text linguistically justified grammars, knowledge representation methods, PENMAN, natural language, systemic grammar, text generation. Because discourse generation is a relatively new branch of Artificial Intelligence, only a few incomplete discourse generators have been developed. A study of those efforts reveals the nature of the task, what makes it difficult, and how the complexities of discourse generation can be controlled. This report compares two recent discourse generation systems: PROTEUS, by Anthony Davey at the University of Edinburgh, and KDS, by Mann and Moore at USC/Information Sciences Institute. Viewing the systems separately, the author identifies particular techniques in each system that contribute strongly to the quality of the resulting text. A comparison of the two systems follows, with a discussion of their common failings and the possibility of creating a new system that combines the strengths of both PROTEUS and KDS. In a text-production system high and special demands are placed on the grammar and the lexicon. This report views these components in such a system. First, the subcomponents dealing with semantic and syntactic information are presented separately. The problems of relating these two types of information are then identified. Finally, strategies designed to meet the problems are proposed and discussed. One of the issues illustrated is what happens when a systemic linguistic approach is combined with a KL-ONE-like knowledge representation--a novel and hitherto unexplored combination.

29ERIC EJ1064997: Towards More Context And Discourse In Grammar Instruction
By ERIC
This paper first discusses why the sentence-level drills still being used extensively in the teaching of grammar to second language learners have not been successful. What follows is a presentation of an innovative approach; namely, using context and discourse to present and practice grammar in more authentic and effective ways.

31DTIC ADA1035664: Plain Speaking: A Theory And Grammar Of Spontaneous Discourse.

39DTIC ADA103566: Plain Speaking: A Theory And Grammar Of Spontaneous Discourse.
