1Design And Implementation Of A Prototype PC Based Graphical And Interactive MILSATCOM Requirements Database System
By Major, William M.
This thesis develops a prototype PC based Military Satellite Communications MILSATCOM) Requirements Database (MRDB) application for U.S. Space Command, using Microsoft's Access relational database management system (DBMS) for Windows. It demonstrates the advantages of using the proposed database system over the existing one and shows how U.S. Space Command can save both time and money by using a PC based interactive, graphical, and user friendly database system. A rapid prototyping approach in concert with a six phase database design process was used to develop the prototype. The first two chapters of the thesis provide a background of the application and describe database management systems in general and Microsoft Access in particular. The applications of Access - tables, queries, forms, reports, macros, and modules - to the design of the MRDB are then discussed in the succeeding five chapters. The Conclusions describe the advantages and benefits of using the prototype MRDB database system and make recommendations for future improvements.

2Design And Implementation Of A Personal Database Management System.
By Jones, Peter L.
The Personal Database Management System is a hardware and software system designed to support people's memory and recall processes. It is a small, low power, and inexpensive microcomputer system which employs E 2 PR0M and CMOS technology. The design is based upon how people manage their personal information, which was found to be different from the ways conventional computerized systems manage information.

3The Design And Implementation Of A Functional/DAPLEX Interface For The Multimodel And Multilingual Database System
By Demers, William Aime. and Rogelstad, Jon Mark.
The Multi-Lingual and Multi-Model Database System (MDBS), at the Naval Postgraduate School, is the only database system in which five different database model interfaces operate on a single computer system. The purpose of the MDBS is to prove that multiple database models can coexist and share data within a single computer system. The MDBS provides a platform in which diverse database models can share data, via access to other models' base data, stored in the MDBS common format. The problem was that a Functional database model had not previously been implemented on the MDBS. The goal of this thesis was to provide a Functional/DAPLEX interface for the MDBS. The approach was to design and implement a set of programs to encapsulate the Functional/DAPLEX language as introduced by D.W Shipman in 1981. It is imperative that the interface maintain the look, feel and characteristics of the Functional data model. The result is a set of programs, written in C, which implement a Functional/DAPLEX interface, thus a sixth interface, for the MDBS. The programs parse DAPLEX data definition language and data manipulation language constructs, convert them to an MDBS common format, store the data with other models' base data and can reconvert MDBS common data back to a Functional form.

4DTIC ADA198951: Design And Implementation Of A Controller And A Host Simulator For A Relational Replicated Database System
By Defense Technical Information Center
Database machines and parallel database systems are becoming a viable alternative for handling transactions on voluminous databases especially with the declining cost of hardware. Database research has spawned a variety of parallel processing architectures to improve the performance of database machines. However, many of these architectures are based upon unique hardware configurations and technologies including processor-per-track, processor-per- head, and off-the-disk designs. Alternative backend database system which will be utilized for processing transactions on voluminous databases. The complete performance analysis and design of RRDS is currently being carried out by a Ph. D. student at the University of Central Florida. RRDS supports the relational data model and consists of multiple processors running replicated copies of the database management system (DBMS) software on a partitioned database. The general hardware organization is composed of a controller and a collection of replicated computers which can be implemented as microcomputers or minicomputers. Keywords: *Host simulator programs.

13DTIC ADA159476: Design, Analysis And Implementation Of The Primary Operation, RETRIEVE-COMMON, Of The Multi-Backend Database System (MBDS).
By Defense Technical Information Center
The multi-backend database system (MBDS) in the Laboratory for Database System Research at the Naval Postgraduate School is designed to overcome the performance-gain and capacity-growth problems of either the traditional database system or the single-backend-software database system. The original MBDS supported four primary operations, namely, RETRIEVE, DELETE, UPDATE AND INSERT. This thesis presents the design and implementation of the fifth primary operation, the RETRIEVE-COMMON operation. The retrieve-common operation is used to merge two files by their common attribute values. First, the overall design and implementation of MBDS is reviewed. Then, several alternatives are compared and analyzed to select the best one as our design and implementation approach. Finally, we describe the detailed design and the implementation. Our goal is to maximize the utilization and minimize the effects to the existing system. For integrating our design into MBDS, several modifications are made. The algorithms for the modifications and their program specifications are also provided in Chapter IV, V and Appendices. (Author)

18The Implementation Of A Network CODASYL-DML Interface For The Multi-lingual Database System.
By Emdi, Bulent
Traditionally, the design and implementation of a conventional database system begins with the selection of a data model, followed by the specification of a model-based data language. An alternative to this traditional approach to database system development is the multi-lingual database system (MLDS). This alternative approach affords the user the ability to access and manage a large collection of databases via several data models and their corresponding data languages. In this thesis we present the specification and implementation of a network CODASYL-DML language interface for the MLDS. Specifically, we present the specification and implementation of an interface which translates CODASYL-DML data language calls into attribute-based data language (ABDL) requests. We describe the software engineering aspects of our implementation and an overview of the four modules which comprise our CODASYL-DML language interface.

19Design And Implementation Of An Enterprise Information System Utilizing A Component Based Three-tier Client/server Database System
By Akbay, Murat. and Lewis, Steven C.
The Naval Security Group currently requires a modem architecture to merge existing command databases into a single Enterprise Information System through which each command may manipulate administrative data. There are numerous technologies available to build and implement such a system. Component- based architectures are extremely well-suited for creating scalable and flexible three-tier Client/Server systems because the data and business logic are encapsulated within objects, allowing them to be located anywhere on a network. The first tier represents the visual aspects of the data on the client side. The middle tier consists of server objects that represent the persistent data and enforce the business logic functions. The third tier maintains the database management systems. The client interacts with the middle-tier server objects via Common Object Request Broker Architecture. CORBA provides a language and platform independent architecture that enables objects to transparently make requests and receive responses in a distributed environment. Java is an object- oriented, multi-threaded, secure mobile code system that allows applications to run on all major computing platforms. This thesis examines the design of an EIS using Java Applets that use Inter-Orb Protocol to communicate with CORBA middle- tier server objects. The third tier will incorporate Java Database Connectivity to communicate with database management systems.

20DTIC ADA280131: The Design And Implementation Of The Functional/Daplex Data Interface For The Multimodel And Multilingual Database System
By Defense Technical Information Center
The programs parse DAPLEX data definition language and data manipulation language constructs, convert them to an MDBS common format, store the data with other models' base data and can reconvert MDBS common data back to a Functional form

21DTIC ADA119161: The Implementation Of A Multi-Backend Database System (MDBS). Part II. The First Prototype MDBS And The Software Engineering Experience.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Multi-Backend Database System, MDBS, uses one microcomputer as the master or controller, and a varying number of microcomputers as slaves or backends. No special hardware is required. The backends are configured in a parallel manner. A new backend may be added by replicating the existing software on an addition minicomputer. A prototype MDBS is being implemented in order to carry out design verification and performance evaluation studies. This report is the second in a series which describes the MDBS implementation. First, the overall design and implementation of MDBS is given. Then, the controller and the backends functions are described in detail. In order to facilitate performance evaluation experiments, a program to generate test data and a program to generate test requests are required. The former program was described in the first report. The latter program is described in this report. Our goal is not limited to the production of a prototype MDBS, but it is also aimed toward the application of software engineering techniques to the development of the system. Thus, the software engineering techniques being used are also discussed. The appendices contain the detailed designs fo the controller subsystem, one of the two modules in the backends subsystem (the other module, the directory management, was contained in the first report) and the test request generation module. 23The Design And Implementation Of Pedagogical Software For Multi-backend/multi-lingual Database System.
By Little, Craig W.
Traditionally, courses in database systems do not use pedagogical software for the purpose of instructing the database systems, despite the progress made in modem database architecture. In this thesis, we present a working document to assist in the instruction of a new database system, the Multi-Backend Database System (MBDS)-and the Multi-Lingual Database System (MLDS). As the course of instruction describes the creation and manipulation of each language, this pedagogical aid will demonstrate, utilizing the live database system, the procedures and methods learned in class.

27The Implementation Of A Functional/daplex Interface For The Multi-lingual Database System.
By Lim, Beng Hock
Traditionally, the design and implementation of a conventional database system begins with the choice of a data model followed by the specification of a model-based data language. Thus, the database system is restricted to a single data model and a specific data language. An alternative to this traditional approach to database-system development is the multi-lingual database system (MLDS). This alternative approach enables the user to access and manage a large collection of databases via several data models and their corresponding data languages without the aforementioned restriction. In this thesis we present the implementation of a functional/Daplex language interface for MLDS. Specifically, we present the implementation of an interface which translates Daplex language calls into attribute-based data language (ABDL) requests which, as the kernel language, support all other data language interfaces.

28The Design And Implementation Of ZTRAX: A Training, Readiness And Flight Hour Relational Database Management Tracking System
By Hodgkins, Richard E.
In an era of diminishing budgets, information technology must help direct operational commanders in the maximum utilization of their available resources. The institution of a relational database management system to identify and exploit an organization's strengths will aid in keeping forces combat ready at all times. The design and implementation of ZTRAX; a training, readiness and flight hour relational database management system. ZTRAX is expected to provide historical information of home and deployed, operational and training flight evolutions which will aid in the process of training and readiness planning. The ZTRAX application was implemented in November, 1991 and is a menu driven program which permits the addition, editing and querying of data contained on two source documents: the Monthly Training and Readiness Report and the Monthly Flight Hour Report. ZTRAX is run concurrently from within the Paradox program to permit a vast array of ad hoc queries, reports and the importation of graphical display mechanisms.

30DTIC ADA111981: The Implementation Of A Multi-Backend Database System (MDBS). Part I. Software Engineering Strategies And Efforts Towards A Prototype MDBS.
By Defense Technical Information Center
A backend multi-minicomputer database system, known as MDBS, has been proposed. MDBS utilizes one minicomputer as the master (or controller) and a varying number of minicomputers as slaves (or backends) which are configured in a novel and parallel fashion. MDBS is primarily designed to provide for database growth and performance enhancement by the addition of identical backends. The software architecture allows the backend addition without the need of new programming and reprogramming. Instead, the backend system software is replicated on the new backends for concurrent and parallel operations which in turn allow the database to grow and the performance to improve without an increase in software complexity. Prototype of MDBS are being implemented in order to carry out design verification and performance evaluation of MDBS. The types of design verification and performance evaluation of MDBS. The types of design verification and performance evaluation of MDBS to be conducted are discussed in the report. The prototypes will be developed in versions starting with a very simple version, i.e., MDBS-I, that is described in detail in this report. Four more versions are envisioned. The rationale for each of the subsequent versions is also given. As the first in a series of reports on the implementation, this report discussed the choice of the hardware and operating system software. It also discusses the choice of the system programming language.

The limitations of the traditional Database Management System(DBMS) have become increasingly clear in recent years. Some of these limitations are interface inflexibility for user accesses, mono-lingual restriction in data languages, performance degradations over time, and excessive costs in upgrading. Two complementary approaches to the DBMS design and implementation--the multi-lingual database system(MLDS) and the multi-bachend database system(MBDS)--effectively deal with the limitations of the traditional DBMS approach. MLDS offers a multi-lingual capability to the DBMS environment, thus freeing the user from the limitations and inflexibility of the single-data-model-and-language approach. MBDS, by contrast, is designed to deal with the issues of performance degradation and upgrading costs by providing a parallel processing capability, and utilizing replicated software and identical hardware for expansion. System upgrades with BDS have been shown to provide an essentially proportional performance gain-to-upgrade-cost ratio. This thesis presents the implementation of an interface between MLDS and MBDS. Specifically the author presents the procedures which create the template and Descriptor files in MLDS that are required by MBDS. Additionally the integration process tying these two systems together are described.

34DTIC ADA289656: Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Database System For The Systems Management Curriculum Office.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Systems Management Curricular Office at the Naval Postgraduate School is burdened with the enormous administrative task of managing files for over 500 students. In a time of drastic military downsizing and funding cuts, this task will require more work of a smaller staff with less money. The burden of paper management could be lessened through automation of record keeping, while increasing efficiency and effectiveness. Valuable time for the students could be saved through elimination of excessive paperwork which they were required to prepare. Based on requirements from the Systems Management Curricular Office, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to allow the incoming class of students to enroll using this system instead of traditional paper forms, enabling the staff to focus on more non-administrative tasks. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all students while minimizing the need to maintain hardcopy files. Additionally, the staff will be able to query reports and generate letters with minimal effort. The system is also analyzed to determine possible enhancements that could be added in the future. The Systems Management Database Systems (SMDS) is designed using Borland's PARADOX version 4.0. (AN)

35Database System Design And Implementation For Marine Air-traffic-controller Training
By Ambriz, Anthony J.
This project focused on the design, development, and implementation of a centralized electronic database for air-traffic-controller (ATC) training within the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps currently has individual electronic training database-management systems at the unit level. The existing training database-management systems are client based, unstandardized, and have significant data-entry redundancy. We developed a centralized system that is scalable and capable of supporting detailed training statistics. We identified several critical features required for successful implementation and developed a system capable of importing and processing existing training data. We analyzed an existing training database-management system used at the unit level and developed methods for accurately exporting the existing system's stored generic data. We processed the raw data and properly migrated the data to a prototype database-management system, which involved processing for proper data integrity, database normalization, and enforcing unique record-identifier usage. We developed a front-end graphical user interface to interact with the developed system and the stored training data. Future system improvements include migration to a military network, adaptation by additional units, and full integration with the Navy's Visual Information Display System.

36Design And Implementation Of A Prototype Microcomputer Database Management System For The Standardization Of Data Elements For The Department Of Defense
By Bacheller, John S.
The need for data management standardization has been clearly identified by the Office of the Secretary of Defense as a means to realize savings in the 9 billion dollars spent annually on information technology in DOD and to further the sharing of information. This thesis discusses the importance of data requirements, functional requirements, logical database design and application design for a prototype microcomputer dictionary system for standardizing, storing, updating and viewing data elements, the lowest level in the hierarchy of metadata. This prototype dictionary is then implemented in a powerful relational database management system, Paradox 3.0. This system will help developers within DOD to build, store, track and use standard data elements.

37DTIC ADA295400: Development And Implementation Of An Expert System For Remotely Accessing A Relational Database.
By Defense Technical Information Center
A knowledge based expert system has been designed to allow a relational database to be queried by a user who has no training on database management systems. A relational database was chosen as an efficient method of storing information about Cub Scout Packs, the Dens that comprise them, the people involved in the administration of each Pack as well as the members of their Dens, their leaders and parents. The database can provide administrative information about the packs or dens, either collectively or individually as well as information about the pack staff or den members. Since more than one member of the same family is usually involved in the same pack, the in formation common to all members of the family was stored in a table separate from the information that was unique to the individual people. The fact that a person could hold more than one position in the pack made it necessary to creat tables to establish the relationships between the pack and its staff and between the den and its members.

38DTIC ADA151770: Implementation And Analysis Of A Microcomputer Based Relational Database System.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The single processor optimized relational database system is a database system designed and implemented for teaching and research purposes at the Air Force Institute of Technology. To complete the implementation of the relational database system an investigation of the design and implementation of the previous research efforts was done. Additional research was done to explore possible designs and implementations of access structures and possible methods to implement the relational operators. With this background, a structured design was completed for the access structure and the relational operators. Once this was accomplished, the low level access structure was implemented and tested, providing the capability to insert, delete and modify data in the relational database system. Finally, some of the relational operators were implemented and tested providing an operational relational database system. Originator-supplied keywords include: Relational Database, Data bases, Formats, Microcomputers, Access structure Design, Data Management, Theses, Relational Operators, Management Info Systems.

39DTIC ADA310276: Design And Implementation Of A Prototype Database System For The Operational Activity Schedule Of The Hellenic Navy.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Hellenic Navy General Staff has a difficult mission which encompasses tactical, operational, and administrative tasks. The most important operational task for the General Staff is to prepare the Operational Activity Schedule for every ship, subcommand, and command in the Hellenic Navy. In order to more effectively prepare this schedule, an automated database is required. This system would contain all operational activity records for the Hellenic Navy units and other pertinent information. Furthermore, the system would produce ad hoc reports, as well as a variety of other reports designed by the user to support ship maintenance schedule. This thesis designs and implements an automated database system that can be used from the Hellenic Navy General Staff. The methodology followed is the standard systems' development life cycle (SDLC). The requirements for the system are obtained, and the database and application are designed and implemented. Paradox 5.0 for Windows is used for the database management system software. Special issues like training, conversion, and maintenance are taken into consideration. The result of this thesis is a functional application named 'OADS' (Operational Activity Database System) that will fulfill users' requirements, keeps track of the operational activities of the Hellenic Navy units, and help in performing the desired tasks.

43Design And Implementation Of A Database Management System For A Navy Medical Administrative Unit
By Bianchi, Kevin Albert.
The Navy Medical Administrative Unit (NMAU) for the Monterey Peninsula has a challenging mission which encompasses many administrative tasks. Medical readiness and occupational health requirements are tracked for all Navy and Marine Corps personnel in the region. In order to fulfill their mission satisfactorily, it was necessary for NMAU to get an automated database management system. The Flight Surgeon at the Naval Postgraduate School works very closely with NMAU. The Flight Surgeon's administrative responsibilities would also benefit from a database system. Based on the requirements for NMAU a database system was designed and implemented in their clinic. Based on the Flight Surgeon's requirements the data base system was further analyzed in order to assist future upgrades that would employ the flight surgeon's requirements. The primary objective, however, was to get a system on line for NMAU that would enable them to effectively and efficiently execute their mission. The Navy Medical Administrative Unit Database System (NMAUDS 1.0) was the result of the previously described endeavors; it was written in dBASE IV version 1.5.

45Design And Implementation Of A Graphical User Interface For A Multimedia Database Management System
By Balci, Metin and Saridogan, Erhan
The purpose of this thesis was to design and implement a graphical user interface for a multimedia database management system prototype previously implemented at the Naval Postgraduate School. Because of the complexity of the data types and the difficulty of manipulating them, it was very hard for a casual user to use the previous system. Since graphical interaction simplifies control dialogue, the authors designed and implemented a graphical user interface using C++ and InterViews 3.0.1 for a Sun-3 workstation under a Unix X-Windows environment with mouse support. They then connected this interface to the multimedia database system prototype. Their interface supports incremental query specification using extended SQL and can be connected to database applications in several different ways. An embedded global data structure, a text file, or a character string can be used for connections. A second version of the interface for a Sun-4 workstation was built and connected to another database system using the character string and text file. This version demonstrated even better performance.

46Implementation Of The Primary Operation, Retrieve-common, Of The Multi-backend Database System (MBDS).
By Hunt, Andrew L.
The multi-backend database system(MBDS) is a research effort conducted jointly by the Naval Postgraduate School and Ohio State University with the sponsorship of the STARS foundation. The MBDS is designed to overcome the capacity growth and performance gain problems of the traditional database systems and the single-backend database systems. The original MBDS supported four primary operations - INSERT. RETRIEVE. DELETE, and UPDATE. This thesis presents the implementation of a fifth primary operation. RETRIEVE-COMMON. This operation is used to merge the records of two files which satisfy a particular query and share a common value for given attributes. The preliminary design is discussed in the Naval Postgraduate Thesis \"Design, Analysis and Implementation of the Primary Operation. Retrieve-Common, of the Multi-Backend Database System (MBDS)\" by Hsiang-Lung Tung.

48DTIC ADA286089: Design And Implementation Of A Database Management System To Support Administrative Activities Onboard Hellenic Navy Vessels
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Hellenic Navy ships have a challenging mission which encompasses tactical, operational and administrative tasks. This mission is carried out by the personnel serving onboard. In order to more effectively manage the personnel, an automated database management system is required. This system would contain all personnel records and other pertinent information. Furthermore, the system would produce periodic reports required by other commands concerning crewmembers, as well as a variety of other reports designed by the user to support the daily activities onboard. This thesis designs and implements an automated database system that can be used on the Hellenic navy ships. The methodology followed is the standard systems' development life cycle (SDLC). The requirements for the system are obtained, and the database and application are designed and implemented. Paradox is used for the database management system software. Special issues like training, security, conversion and maintenance are taken into consideration. The result of this thesis is a functional application named SPAS (Shipboard Personnel Administration System) that will fulfill the users' requirements, keep track of the administrative activities of the ships, and help in performing the desired tasks accurately.

49DTIC ADA163843: Design And Implementation Of A Centralized Data Directory For A Distributed Database Management System.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This thesis refined and implemented a design of a centralized data directory for distributed database management system (DDBMS) begun in a previous study for use in the AFIT Digital Engineering Laboratory. This directory contains information about all the data stored in the distributed databases. By following the life cycle programming method to develop the system this project completed a requirements analysis, detailed design and implementation of the directory as well as partial implementation of the DDBMS to test the operation of the centralized data directory. The requirements analysis outlined the functions of the central site which contained the centralized directory. This project used Structured Analysis Design Technique (SADT) diagrams to document the central site's functions. These included initializing the DDBMS updating the centralized directory sending changes to other local directories at the remote sites reconfiguring; the DDBMS and servicing requests for information in the directory. Next the project refined the detailed design of the directory processing and depicted the functional decomposition in structure charts. The following step implemented on two microcomputers only those modules necessary to show the centralized directory worked. Tests verified that one DDBMS node which received a query could request and receive location information from the other node.

50DTIC ADA164051: Implementation Of The AFIT/ENG Faculty And Student Database Management System.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This study took the works of the previous AFIT/ENG Student and Faculty Database System thesis efforts and design and implemented the application software for the project. The basic purpose of the thesis was to provide a sound design for the application programs that would interface with the TOTAL Database Management System and the Forms Management System. The entire system was to be designed with the notion that it would be modified and enhanced. A series of standard interface routines were created to act as a layer between the TOTAL DBMS. The resulting routines were abstracted and used as an extension to the Pascal programming language. The education plan portion of the database was used as a prototype to develop the requirements of the human-computer interface. The program was then redesigned and implemented using the standard routines and the specifications developed from the prototype. A menu driven system was used to implement the design utilizing the Forms Management System as the screen interface. The education plan program is an example of the structured approach used in interpreting the design of the database system. The program contains examples of scrolled screens, database calls, linked list routines, and data abstraction. Additional programs were written to demonstrate the capabilitiees interfacing with the GKS graphics package, transmittion of data to the registrars office, and to show the continuity of the design.
