4Design And Implementation Of An Enterprise Information System Utilizing A Component Based Three-tier Client/server Database System

By

The Naval Security Group currently requires a modem architecture to merge existing command databases into a single Enterprise Information System through which each command may manipulate administrative data. There are numerous technologies available to build and implement such a system. Component- based architectures are extremely well-suited for creating scalable and flexible three-tier Client/Server systems because the data and business logic are encapsulated within objects, allowing them to be located anywhere on a network. The first tier represents the visual aspects of the data on the client side. The middle tier consists of server objects that represent the persistent data and enforce the business logic functions. The third tier maintains the database management systems. The client interacts with the middle-tier server objects via Common Object Request Broker Architecture. CORBA provides a language and platform independent architecture that enables objects to transparently make requests and receive responses in a distributed environment. Java is an object- oriented, multi-threaded, secure mobile code system that allows applications to run on all major computing platforms. This thesis examines the design of an EIS using Java Applets that use Inter-Orb Protocol to communicate with CORBA middle- tier server objects. The third tier will incorporate Java Database Connectivity to communicate with database management systems.

12The Implementation Of A Entity-relationship Interface For The Multi-lingual Database System

By

Traditionally, the design and implementation of a conventional database system begins with the choice of a data model followed by the specification of a model-based data language. Thus, the database system is restricted to a single data model and a specific data language. An alternative to this traditional approach to database-system development is the multi-lingual database system (MLDS). This alternative approach enables the user to access and manage a large collection of databases via several data models and their corresponding data languages without the aforementioned restriction. In this thesis we present the implementation of a entity-relationship/Daplex language interface for the MLDS. Specifically, we present the implementation of an interface which translates Daplex language calls into attribute-based data language (ABDL) requests. We describe the software engineering aspects of our implementation and an overview of the five modules which comprise our entity relationship/ Daplex language interface.

13The Implementation Of A Multi-lingual Database System--multi-backend Database System Interface.

By

The limitations of the traditional Database Management System (DBMS) have become increasingly clear in recent years. Some of these limitations are interface inflexibility for user accesses, mono-lingual restriction in data languages, performance degradations over time, and excessive costs in upgrading. Two complementary approaches to the DBMS design and implementation— the multi-lingual database system (MLDS) and the multi-backend database system (MBDS)~effectively deal with the limitations of the traditional DBMS approach. MLDS offers a multi-lingual capability to the DBMS environment, thus freeing the user from the limitations and inflexibility of the single-data-model- and-language approach. MBDS. by contrast, is designed to deal with the issues of performance degradation and upgrading costs by providing a parallel processing capability, and utilizing replicated software and identical hardware for expansion. System upgrades with MBDS have been shown to provide an essentially proportional performance gain-to-upgrade-cost ratio. In this thesis, we present the implementation of an interface between MLDS and MBDS. Specifically, we present the procedures which create the Template and Descriptor Files in MLDS that are required \\>y MBDS. Additionally, we describe the integration process tying these two systems together.

14Implementation Of A Personnel Database System For Crew Allocation And Reports Production In A Small Battle Ship's Environment.

By

Crucial to the Naval mission, but administrative in nature, is the assignment of ship's company to temporary and permanent duty assignments. This study implements a personnel database system for personnel management on a small battle ship. dBASE III is used as a \"Database Management Software\" and the \"System\" is implemented as a collection of algorithms providing intelligent decisions about these assignments. It can be supported by an IBM PC/XT (or an IBM PC/XT compatible) microcomputer. The system is designed to provide real time management decision information on crew allocations, as well as required periodic reports, based on current crewmember information.

18DTIC ADA111981: The Implementation Of A Multi-Backend Database System (MDBS). Part I. Software Engineering Strategies And Efforts Towards A Prototype MDBS.

By

A backend multi-minicomputer database system, known as MDBS, has been proposed. MDBS utilizes one minicomputer as the master (or controller) and a varying number of minicomputers as slaves (or backends) which are configured in a novel and parallel fashion. MDBS is primarily designed to provide for database growth and performance enhancement by the addition of identical backends. The software architecture allows the backend addition without the need of new programming and reprogramming. Instead, the backend system software is replicated on the new backends for concurrent and parallel operations which in turn allow the database to grow and the performance to improve without an increase in software complexity. Prototype of MDBS are being implemented in order to carry out design verification and performance evaluation of MDBS. The types of design verification and performance evaluation of MDBS. The types of design verification and performance evaluation of MDBS to be conducted are discussed in the report. The prototypes will be developed in versions starting with a very simple version, i.e., MDBS-I, that is described in detail in this report. Four more versions are envisioned. The rationale for each of the subsequent versions is also given. As the first in a series of reports on the implementation, this report discussed the choice of the hardware and operating system software. It also discusses the choice of the system programming language.

19DTIC ADA242682: The Design And Implementation Of The Ariel Active Database Rule System

By

This paper describes the design and implementation of the Ariel DBMS and it's tightly-coupled forward-chaining rule system. The query language of Ariel is a subset of POSTQUEL, extended with a new production-rule sublanguage. Ariel supports traditional relational database query and update operations efficiently, using a System R-like query processing strategy. In addition, the Ariel rule system is tightly coupled with query and update processing. Ariel rules can have conditions based on a mix of patterns, events, and transitions. For testing rule conditions, Ariel makes use of a discrimination network composed of a special data structure for testing single-relation selection conditions efficiently, and a modified version of the TREAT algorithm, called A- TREAT, for testing join conditions. The key modification to TREAT (which could also be used in the Rete algorithm) is the use of virtual a-memory nodes which save storage since they contain only the predicate associated with the memory node instead of copies of data matching the predicate. The rule-action executor in Ariel binds the data matching a rule's condition to the action of the rule at rule fire time, and executes the rule action using the query processor.

21Design And Implementation Of A Database Management System For A Navy Medical Administrative Unit

By

The Navy Medical Administrative Unit (NMAU) for the Monterey Peninsula has a challenging mission which encompasses many administrative tasks. Medical readiness and occupational health requirements are tracked for all Navy and Marine Corps personnel in the region. In order to fulfill their mission satisfactorily, it was necessary for NMAU to get an automated database management system. The Flight Surgeon at the Naval Postgraduate School works very closely with NMAU. The Flight Surgeon's administrative responsibilities would also benefit from a database system. Based on the requirements for NMAU a database system was designed and implemented in their clinic. Based on the Flight Surgeon's requirements the data base system was further analyzed in order to assist future upgrades that would employ the flight surgeon's requirements. The primary objective, however, was to get a system on line for NMAU that would enable them to effectively and efficiently execute their mission. The Navy Medical Administrative Unit Database System (NMAUDS 1.0) was the result of the previously described endeavors; it was written in dBASE IV version 1.5.

22Implementation Of The Primary Operation, Retrieve-common, Of The Multi-backend Database System (MBDS).

By

The multi-backend database system(MBDS) is a research effort conducted jointly by the Naval Postgraduate School and Ohio State University with the sponsorship of the STARS foundation. The MBDS is designed to overcome the capacity growth and performance gain problems of the traditional database systems and the single-backend database systems. The original MBDS supported four primary operations - INSERT. RETRIEVE. DELETE, and UPDATE. This thesis presents the implementation of a fifth primary operation. RETRIEVE-COMMON. This operation is used to merge the records of two files which satisfy a particular query and share a common value for given attributes. The preliminary design is discussed in the Naval Postgraduate Thesis \"Design, Analysis and Implementation of the Primary Operation. Retrieve-Common, of the Multi-Backend Database System (MBDS)\" by Hsiang-Lung Tung.

By

Traditionally, courses in database systems do not use pedagogical software for the purpose of instructing the database systems, despite the progress made in modern database architecture. This thesis presents a working document to assist in the instruction of a new database system, the Multi-Backend Database System (MBDS) and the Multi-Lingual Database System (MLDS). As the course of instruction describes the creation and manipulation of each language, this pedagogical aid will demonstrate, utilizing the live database system, the procedures and methods learned in class. 26Design And Implementation Of A Prototype Database For Part Information To Support The MK92 Fire Control System Maintenance Advisor Expert System

By

The MK92 Fire Control System (FCS) is the heart of shipboard weapon systems found aboard U.S. Oliver Hazard Perry class FFGs. This system, based on 1970's technology, frequently requires extensive troubleshooting and supplemental shore-base support. A maintenance advisor expert system is being developed to assist shipboard technicians in correctly diagnosing system faults, providing expert advice concerning part replacement or further tests which should be made. Additional information provided by the expert system includes documentation references, alternate location for a part, and part numbers. Storing such information in a relational database that communicates with the expert system would greatly improve its maintainability, modifiability, and accuracy. This thesis addresses the design and implementation of a database to support the MK92 MOD 2 FCS Maintenance Advisor Expert System using Microsoft Access ™. This database includes such functions as part and replacement information, database maintenance, and expert system support. Research revealed that the currently supported Windows interprogram communications mechanism of Dynamic Data Exchange (DOE), as supported by the current versions of Access and Softsell Adept ™, will not adequately support the database to expert system interface requirements. Suggestions for alternative interface solutions are provided in the thesis.

31Design And Implementation Of A NATOPS Qualification Database Management System For Naval Aviation Safety Officers

By

The VFA-125 Safety Office located at NAS Lemoore is burdened with the enormous administrative responsibility of managing the NATOPS qualifications for over 200 pilots and passengers. During this period of military downsizing and operational funding cuts, this responsibility will require the increased attention of a smaller staff with a limited budget. The burden of paper file management could be eased through the introduction of automated record keeping while simultaneously increasing accuracy and efficiency. The potential for non-qualified personnel to fly squadron aircraft could be eliminated. Based on VFA-125 Safety Office requirements, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to automate the currently utilized manual NATOPS filing system to allow the squadron Safety Officer immediate access to all NATOPS-related pilot qualification data. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all squadron pilots while minimizing the time spent verifying the previously-used manual filing system. Additionally, the staff will be able to query reports and generate memoranda with minimal effort. The system is also analyzed to determine possible enhancements in the future. The Aviation Safety Database System is designed using dBASE III Plus and dBASE for Windows 5.0.

33Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Database System For The Systems Management Curriculum Office

By

The Systems Management Curricular Office at the Naval Postgraduate School is burdened with the enormous administrative task of managing files for over 500 students. In a time of drastic military downsizing and funding cuts, this task will require more work of a smaller staff with less money. The burden of paper management could be lessened through automation of record keeping, while increasing efficiency and effectiveness. Valuable time for the students could be saved through elimination of excessive paperwork which they were required to prepare. Based on requirements from the Systems Management Curricular Office, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to allow the incoming class of students to enroll using this system instead of traditional paper forms, enabling the staff to focus on more non-administrative tasks. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all students while minimizing the need to maintain hardcopy files. Additionally, the staff will be able to query reports and generate letters with minimal effort. The system is also analyzed to determine possible enhancements that could be added in the future. The Systems Management Database Systems (SMDS) is designed using Borland's PARADOX version 4.0. (AN)

34Design And Implementation Of A Prototype PC Based Graphical And Interactive MILSATCOM Requirements Database System

By

This thesis develops a prototype PC based Military Satellite Communications MILSATCOM) Requirements Database (MRDB) application for U.S. Space Command, using Microsoft's Access relational database management system (DBMS) for Windows. It demonstrates the advantages of using the proposed database system over the existing one and shows how U.S. Space Command can save both time and money by using a PC based interactive, graphical, and user friendly database system. A rapid prototyping approach in concert with a six phase database design process was used to develop the prototype. The first two chapters of the thesis provide a background of the application and describe database management systems in general and Microsoft Access in particular. The applications of Access - tables, queries, forms, reports, macros, and modules - to the design of the MRDB are then discussed in the succeeding five chapters. The Conclusions describe the advantages and benefits of using the prototype MRDB database system and make recommendations for future improvements.

48Implementation Of A Distributed Object-oriented Database Management System

By

Distributed database management systems provide for more flexible and efficient processing. Research in object-oriented database management systems is revealing an abundance of additional benefits that cannot be provided by more traditional database management systems. The Naval Military Personnel Command (NMPC) is used as a case study to evaluate the requirements of transitioning from a centralized to a distributed database management system. Features and characteristics of both distributed and object-oriented database management systems are used to determine the appropriate configuration for different application environments. The distributed and object-oriented concepts are evaluated in detail in order to allow an organization to appropriately select the type of system to meet their needs. Transition requirements for NMPC, in particular, are identified and a suggested plan of action is presented. Keywords: Theses, Database implementation, Database design, Distributed architecture, KBSA(Knowledge Base Software Assistant). (kr)

50Analysis, Design, And Implementation Of A Database Management System For The Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association.

By

The Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association is a professional group consisting of graduates from the Postgraduate School. The Alumni Association is a self supporting entity that is not part of the administrative structure of the school. The Alumni Association supports itself through membership fees paid by graduates who join the association. The administrative work required to run the association is accomplished through a part-time employee and volunteers. Until recently, the Alumni Association was unorganized and lacked a firm plan of action to establish itself with the School's graduates and to increase its membership base. Records of graduates were located in various locations and in different formats which made tracking and contacting alumni an extremely time consuming operation. This thesis develops a database management system for the Naval Postgraduate School Alumni Association. This system provides a standardized format for storing data and tracking alumni. It also performs the time consuming accounting and billing functions associated with the Association's membership management. This thesis provides an outline covering the Alumni Association's system requirements analysis and design methodology. The system was written using dBASE IV, version 1.1.
