1The Design And Implementation Of A Hierarchical Interface For The Multi-lingual Database System
By Benson, Timothy P. and Wentz, Gary L.
Traditionally, the design and implementation of a conventional database system begins with the choice of a data model followed by the specification of a model-based data language. thus, the database system is restricted to a single data model and a specific data language. An alternative to this traditional approach to database-system development is the multi-lingual database system (MLDS). The alternative approach affords the user the ability to access and manage a large collection of databases via several data models and their corresponding data languages. In this thesis we present the specification and implementation of a hierarchical/DL/I language interface for the MLDS. Specifically, we present the specification and implementation of an interfaces which translates DL/I data language calls into attribute-based data language (ABDL) requests. We describe the software engineering aspects of our implementation and an overview of the four modules which comprise our DL/I language interface.

2DTIC ADA159738: Design And Implementation Of Inventory Database.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This thesis presents the design and implementation of the inventory database system. In order to effectively command and control the inventory of an Air Force, the commander must know the status of his resources. The use of a database management system can significantly increase his access to information regarding resource availability, location, state of operational readiness, and also increase end-user productivity, and decrease staff effort. The Semantic Data Model (SDM) was chosen as the method for designing the database. SDM provides an effective base for accommodating the evolution of the content structure and use of the database. After logical design of the inventory database, records are rearranged in order to satisfy relational database management system requirements. The inventory database is implemented by using the ORACLE relational DBMS. (Author)

3DTIC AD1046291: Database System Design And Implementation For Marine Air-Traffic-Controller Training
By Defense Technical Information Center
This project focused on the design, development, and implementation of a centralized electronic database for air-traffic-controller (ATC) training within the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps currently has individual electronic training database-management systems at the unit level. The existing training database-management systems are client based, unstandardized, and have significant data-entry redundancy. We developed a centralized system that is scalable and capable of supporting detailed training statistics. We identified several critical features required for successful implementation and developed a system capable of importing and processing existing training data. We analyzed an existing training database-management system used at the unit level and developed methods for accurately exporting the existing system's stored generic data. We processed the raw data and properly migrated the data to a prototype database-management system, which involved processing for proper data integrity, database normalization, and enforcing unique record-identifier usage. We developed a front-end graphical user interface to interact with the developed system and the stored training data. Future system improvements include migration to a military network, adaptation by additional units, and full integration with the Navy's Visual Information Display System.

4DTIC ADA159476: Design, Analysis And Implementation Of The Primary Operation, RETRIEVE-COMMON, Of The Multi-Backend Database System (MBDS).
By Defense Technical Information Center
The multi-backend database system (MBDS) in the Laboratory for Database System Research at the Naval Postgraduate School is designed to overcome the performance-gain and capacity-growth problems of either the traditional database system or the single-backend-software database system. The original MBDS supported four primary operations, namely, RETRIEVE, DELETE, UPDATE AND INSERT. This thesis presents the design and implementation of the fifth primary operation, the RETRIEVE-COMMON operation. The retrieve-common operation is used to merge two files by their common attribute values. First, the overall design and implementation of MBDS is reviewed. Then, several alternatives are compared and analyzed to select the best one as our design and implementation approach. Finally, we describe the detailed design and the implementation. Our goal is to maximize the utilization and minimize the effects to the existing system. For integrating our design into MBDS, several modifications are made. The algorithms for the modifications and their program specifications are also provided in Chapter IV, V and Appendices. (Author)

6DTIC ADA275014: Design And Implementation Of A Database Management System For A Navy Medical Administrative Unit
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Navy Medical Administrative Unit (NMAU) for the Monterey Peninsula has a challenging mission which encompasses many administrative tasks. Medical readiness and occupational health requirements are tracked for all Navy and Marine Corps personnel in the region. In order to fulfill their mission satisfactorily, it was necessary for NMAU to get an automated database management system. The Flight Surgeon at the Naval Postgraduate School works very closely with NMAU. The Flight Surgeon's administrative responsibilities would also benefit from a database system. Based on the requirements for NMAU a database system was designed and implemented in their clinic. Based on the Flight Surgeon's requirements the data base system was further analyzed in order to assist future upgrades that would employ the flight surgeon's requirements. The primary objective, however, was to get a system on line for NMAU that would enable them to effectively and efficiently execute their mission. The Navy Medical Administrative Unit Database System (NMAUDS 1.0) was the result of the previously described endeavors; it was written in dBASE IV version 1.5.

7DTIC ADA313102: Design And Implementation Of A NATOPS Qualification Database Management System For Naval Aviation Safety Officers.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The VFA-125 Safety Office located at NAS Lemoore is burdened with the enormous administrative responsibility of managing the NATOPS qualifications for over 200 pilots and passengers. During this period of military downsizing and operational funding cuts, this responsibility will require the increased attention of a smaller staff with a limited budget. The burden of paper file management could be eased through the introduction of automated record keeping while simultaneously increasing accuracy and efficiency. The potential for non-qualified personnel to fly squadron aircraft could be eliminated. Based on VFA-125 Safety Office requirements, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to automate the currently utilized manual NATOPS filing system to allow the squadron Safety Officer immediate access to all NATOPS-related pilot qualification data. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all squadron pilots while minimizing the time spent verifying the previously-used manual filing system. Additionally, the staff will be able to query reports and generate memoranda with minimal effort. The system is also analyzed to determine possible enhancements in the future. The Aviation Safety Database System is designed using dBASE III Plus and dBASE for Windows 5.0.

8DTIC ADA219581: Design And Implementation Of A Prototype Database For The Analysis Of Student Opinion Forms For The Administrative Sciences Department, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Naval Postgraduate School Currently collects and disseminates the data from Student Opinion Forms (SOF) on a quarterly basis. After all required SOF reports are routed to the academic departments and the instructors, the data is archived on magnetic tape. Until recently, there was no method of retrieving this data for use in classroom environment research or for instructor evaluation purposes. This thesis develops a prototype database for the analysis of Student Opinion Forms (SOFA) for the Administrative Sciences Dept. using FOCUS database management system. It will be used to retrieve SOF data and to produce reports and graphics which will assist the chairman, his representatives, and department researchers in examining the historical data relating to courses, curricula or instructors. SOFA will greatly assist department personnel in making reasonable inferences regarding instructor performance, classroom environment, student curriculum and other factors which may be affecting the learning environment. Keywords: Curricula; Courses education; Relational databases; Object oriented; Entities; Hierachical database; Universities information retrieval; Theses.

106. Comp Sci IJCSE GIS DATABASE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION Nigeria Musa. A. A
The myriad of problems associated with storing and managing spatial data in MAUTECH had made it imperative to develop a Geographic Information System (GIS) database. The urge to split the database into two packages – one, a conventional database handling the attributes data and two, a GIS database handling the spatial data – was borne out of the fact that a database was already in existence which stores the attribute data. However, the need to keep the DBMS simple in order to make it user friendly made the option of storing both attribute and spatial data in one single DBMS an attractive option. The latter option was implemented in this paper using ESRI’s ArcGIS 10.1. The design went through three stages - the conceptual, the logical and the physical design stages. The main features used to link the numerous other related tables were the buildings which were digitized from a satellite image as polygon features. Though most of the problems associated with analogue record keeping were eliminated the objective of making it user friendly was not achieved. The design successfully eliminated data redundancy however; querying the database had new challenges for users that are unfamiliar with the GIS. The split arrangement whereby the spatial data is stored in a GIS and the attribute data is stored in a conventional database is considered a much better option.

13Design And Implementation Of A Graphical User Interface For A Multimedia Database Management System
By Balci, Metin and Saridogan, Erhan
The purpose of this thesis was to design and implement a graphical user interface for a multimedia database management system prototype previously implemented at the Naval Postgraduate School. Because of the complexity of the data types and the difficulty of manipulating them, it was very hard for a casual user to use the previous system. Since graphical interaction simplifies control dialogue, the authors designed and implemented a graphical user interface using C++ and InterViews 3.0.1 for a Sun-3 workstation under a Unix X-Windows environment with mouse support. They then connected this interface to the multimedia database system prototype. Their interface supports incremental query specification using extended SQL and can be connected to database applications in several different ways. An embedded global data structure, a text file, or a character string can be used for connections. A second version of the interface for a Sun-4 workstation was built and connected to another database system using the character string and text file. This version demonstrated even better performance.

18Design And Implementation Of A Prototype Database For Part Information To Support The MK92 Fire Control System Maintenance Advisor Expert System
By Talley, Susan G.
The MK92 Fire Control System (FCS) is the heart of shipboard weapon systems found aboard U.S. Oliver Hazard Perry class FFGs. This system, based on 1970's technology, frequently requires extensive troubleshooting and supplemental shore-base support. A maintenance advisor expert system is being developed to assist shipboard technicians in correctly diagnosing system faults, providing expert advice concerning part replacement or further tests which should be made. Additional information provided by the expert system includes documentation references, alternate location for a part, and part numbers. Storing such information in a relational database that communicates with the expert system would greatly improve its maintainability, modifiability, and accuracy. This thesis addresses the design and implementation of a database to support the MK92 MOD 2 FCS Maintenance Advisor Expert System using Microsoft Access ™. This database includes such functions as part and replacement information, database maintenance, and expert system support. Research revealed that the currently supported Windows interprogram communications mechanism of Dynamic Data Exchange (DOE), as supported by the current versions of Access and Softsell Adept ™, will not adequately support the database to expert system interface requirements. Suggestions for alternative interface solutions are provided in the thesis.

22Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Database Management System For Generating Technical/medical Reports By Chiropractors
By Bolling, Rodney A.
A medical center specializing in chiropractic care is burdened with the enormous task of managing numerous patient's records, preparing error free billing statements, and writing official business/medical. This task requires increased attention of staff personnel. The burden of paper file management could be lessened through automation of record keeping, while increasing accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness. Valuable time for the providers and secretary could be saved through elimination of excessive paperwork which they are required to prepare. Based on the staff requirements, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to automate the current manual system to allow providers to generate official medical reports. In addition to, this system will also store, sort, and compare data relevant to all patients while minimizing the need to maintain hard copy files. The Chiro Pro 97 (CP97) Database system is designed using Microsoft Access 97

25The Design And Implementation Of A Functional Interface For The Attribute-based Multi-lingual Database System.
By Mack, Sybil B.
Traditionally, the design and implementation of a conventional database system begins with the selection of a data model, followed by the specification of a model-based data language. Hence, the database system is restricted to a single data model and a specific data language. One alternative to this traditional approach to database-system development is the multi-lingual database system (MLDS). This alternative approach affords the user the ability to access and manage a large collection of databases, via several data models and their corresponding data languages, without the aforementioned limitations. This thesis presents a methodology for supporting the Functional Data Model and the Data Language DAPLEX for the MLDS. Specifically, we design an interface which translates DAPLEX data language calls into attribute-based data language (ABDL) requests. A description of the software engineering aspects of the implementation and an overview of the modules which comprise our DAPLEX language interface are provided.

30Design And Implementation Of An Enterprise Information System Utilizing A Component Based Three-tier Client/server Database System
By Akbay, Murat. and Lewis, Steven C.
The Naval Security Group currently requires a modem architecture to merge existing command databases into a single Enterprise Information System through which each command may manipulate administrative data. There are numerous technologies available to build and implement such a system. Component- based architectures are extremely well-suited for creating scalable and flexible three-tier Client/Server systems because the data and business logic are encapsulated within objects, allowing them to be located anywhere on a network. The first tier represents the visual aspects of the data on the client side. The middle tier consists of server objects that represent the persistent data and enforce the business logic functions. The third tier maintains the database management systems. The client interacts with the middle-tier server objects via Common Object Request Broker Architecture. CORBA provides a language and platform independent architecture that enables objects to transparently make requests and receive responses in a distributed environment. Java is an object- oriented, multi-threaded, secure mobile code system that allows applications to run on all major computing platforms. This thesis examines the design of an EIS using Java Applets that use Inter-Orb Protocol to communicate with CORBA middle- tier server objects. The third tier will incorporate Java Database Connectivity to communicate with database management systems.

32DTIC ADA242682: The Design And Implementation Of The Ariel Active Database Rule System
By Defense Technical Information Center
This paper describes the design and implementation of the Ariel DBMS and it's tightly-coupled forward-chaining rule system. The query language of Ariel is a subset of POSTQUEL, extended with a new production-rule sublanguage. Ariel supports traditional relational database query and update operations efficiently, using a System R-like query processing strategy. In addition, the Ariel rule system is tightly coupled with query and update processing. Ariel rules can have conditions based on a mix of patterns, events, and transitions. For testing rule conditions, Ariel makes use of a discrimination network composed of a special data structure for testing single-relation selection conditions efficiently, and a modified version of the TREAT algorithm, called A- TREAT, for testing join conditions. The key modification to TREAT (which could also be used in the Rete algorithm) is the use of virtual a-memory nodes which save storage since they contain only the predicate associated with the memory node instead of copies of data matching the predicate. The rule-action executor in Ariel binds the data matching a rule's condition to the action of the rule at rule fire time, and executes the rule action using the query processor.

35DTIC ADA289656: Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Database System For The Systems Management Curriculum Office.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Systems Management Curricular Office at the Naval Postgraduate School is burdened with the enormous administrative task of managing files for over 500 students. In a time of drastic military downsizing and funding cuts, this task will require more work of a smaller staff with less money. The burden of paper management could be lessened through automation of record keeping, while increasing efficiency and effectiveness. Valuable time for the students could be saved through elimination of excessive paperwork which they were required to prepare. Based on requirements from the Systems Management Curricular Office, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to allow the incoming class of students to enroll using this system instead of traditional paper forms, enabling the staff to focus on more non-administrative tasks. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all students while minimizing the need to maintain hardcopy files. Additionally, the staff will be able to query reports and generate letters with minimal effort. The system is also analyzed to determine possible enhancements that could be added in the future. The Systems Management Database Systems (SMDS) is designed using Borland's PARADOX version 4.0. (AN)

36DTIC ADA286089: Design And Implementation Of A Database Management System To Support Administrative Activities Onboard Hellenic Navy Vessels
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Hellenic Navy ships have a challenging mission which encompasses tactical, operational and administrative tasks. This mission is carried out by the personnel serving onboard. In order to more effectively manage the personnel, an automated database management system is required. This system would contain all personnel records and other pertinent information. Furthermore, the system would produce periodic reports required by other commands concerning crewmembers, as well as a variety of other reports designed by the user to support the daily activities onboard. This thesis designs and implements an automated database system that can be used on the Hellenic navy ships. The methodology followed is the standard systems' development life cycle (SDLC). The requirements for the system are obtained, and the database and application are designed and implemented. Paradox is used for the database management system software. Special issues like training, security, conversion and maintenance are taken into consideration. The result of this thesis is a functional application named SPAS (Shipboard Personnel Administration System) that will fulfill the users' requirements, keep track of the administrative activities of the ships, and help in performing the desired tasks accurately.

38DTIC ADA163843: Design And Implementation Of A Centralized Data Directory For A Distributed Database Management System.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This thesis refined and implemented a design of a centralized data directory for distributed database management system (DDBMS) begun in a previous study for use in the AFIT Digital Engineering Laboratory. This directory contains information about all the data stored in the distributed databases. By following the life cycle programming method to develop the system this project completed a requirements analysis, detailed design and implementation of the directory as well as partial implementation of the DDBMS to test the operation of the centralized data directory. The requirements analysis outlined the functions of the central site which contained the centralized directory. This project used Structured Analysis Design Technique (SADT) diagrams to document the central site's functions. These included initializing the DDBMS updating the centralized directory sending changes to other local directories at the remote sites reconfiguring; the DDBMS and servicing requests for information in the directory. Next the project refined the detailed design of the directory processing and depicted the functional decomposition in structure charts. The following step implemented on two microcomputers only those modules necessary to show the centralized directory worked. Tests verified that one DDBMS node which received a query could request and receive location information from the other node.

39DTIC ADA164013: The Design And Implementation Of A Relational To Network Query Translator For A Distributed Database Management System.
By Defense Technical Information Center
A translation program was implemented for the translation of generic relational queries into the Data Management Language (DML) of the TOTAL data base management system. The objectives of this thesis were to propose and detail a method of supporting a global relational query language for a heterogeneous distributed database management system (DDBMS), design generic query translators for the translation of global relational queries into local hierarchical and network DML, and partially implement translation software for the conversion of relational queries into TOTAL DML. The initial portion of the thesis presents an overall analysis of data partitioning, query decomposition and global query management in the DDBMS. Specific proposals are advocated concerning the specific approach to be taken toward a global query manager and the design of the global schema over current databases. The second portion formalizes the assumptions and constraints present in the global relational model, and presents generic algorithms for the translation of relational queries into hierarchical and network DML. The last portion details the implementation and testing of the relational to TOTAL translator. The approach used was to take information returned from the local data directory of the distributed database in response to a relational query, and compile that information into a generated Pascal program containing the TOTAL DML commands.

41Design And Implementation Of A Prototype Database System For The Operational Activity Schedule Of The Hellenic Navy
By Marinos, Evangelos Pavlos
The Hellenic Navy General Staff has a difficult mission which encompasses tactical, operational, and administrative tasks. The most important operational task for the General Staff is to prepare the Operational Activity Schedule for every ship, subcommand, and command in the Hellenic Navy. In order to more effectively prepare this schedule, an automated database is required. This system would contain all operational activity records for the Hellenic Navy units and other pertinent information. Furthermore, the system would produce ad hoc reports, as well as a variety of other reports designed by the user to support ship maintenance schedule. This thesis designs and implements an automated database system that can be used from the Hellenic Navy General Staff. The methodology followed is the standard systems' development life cycle (SDLC). The requirements for the system are obtained, and the database and application are designed and implemented. Paradox 5.0 for Windows is used for the database management system software. Special issues like training, conversion, and maintenance are taken into consideration. The result of this thesis is a functional application named 'OADS' (Operational Activity Database System) that will fulfill users' requirements, keeps track of the operational activities of the Hellenic Navy units, and help in performing the desired tasks.

42DTIC ADA427716: Design And Implementation Of A Database For An Integrated System For Daily Management In An Industrial And Commercial Organization
By Defense Technical Information Center
The purpose of this research is to define a centralized database containing all necessary information related to daily management in an industrial and commercial organization that is publicly owned and equipped with civil personality and financial autonomy. The system is composed of the following subsystems: Human Resource Management, Provisioning; and Financial, Budgetary, and Accounting Management. The three subsystems should be installed in a central site and at regional sites. Each site will have its own database. The central database will be supplied with the data, which come from the other sites at the end of the day or according to need via modems. It is necessary to develop a tool for remote database queries to accomplish this work. The platform on which the application must be executed is IBM-INFORMIX running on top of the WINDOWS operating system. The database will be a relational database. The framework used in the design and modeling consists of the following: Object Oriented Analysis (OOA), which enables the development of high quality software by defining the problem structure; and the Delphi language, which provides a robust development environment. The installation of the solution will be executed according to the following scenario: Client/Server architecture with the object-oriented development tool DELPHI, the database will be installed on the central and regional servers, the application will be installed on the end users' stations, and data access will be through an open ODBC. This software presents an integrated solution that will provide centralized and accurate data, so that data can be used to derive the right decision at the best time. (7 tables, 15 figures, 14 refs.)

44DTIC ADA124647: Analysis Of Information Requirements And Design Of The Consolidated AFIT Database And Information System (CADIS) With An AFIT/CI Implementation Design.
By Defense Technical Information Center
A Consolidated AFIT Database and Information System (CADIS), a centralized relational database in third normal form, was designed for use by the faculty and staff of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). Information requirements were gathered by means of an in-depth data/information analysis at the directorate and division level, and used as the basis of the design. Provided with the design is a highly detailed data dictionary, in four parts, and an estimation of the approximate size of the database itself. Additionally, a system of applications programs were designed for the AFIT Directorate of Civilian Institution Programs (AFIT/CI). This system will allow efficient and easy access to the data on the database by untrained or non-programmer type users. These programs were specifically designed to provide an extremely friendly user interface between CADIS and the AFIT/CI personnel. They have been conceptually and logically documented according to the standards of software engineering.

45The Design And Implementation Of A Functional/DAPLEX Interface For The Multimodel And Multilingual Database System
By Demers, William Aime. and Rogelstad, Jon Mark.
The Multi-Lingual and Multi-Model Database System (MDBS), at the Naval Postgraduate School, is the only database system in which five different database model interfaces operate on a single computer system. The purpose of the MDBS is to prove that multiple database models can coexist and share data within a single computer system. The MDBS provides a platform in which diverse database models can share data, via access to other models' base data, stored in the MDBS common format. The problem was that a Functional database model had not previously been implemented on the MDBS. The goal of this thesis was to provide a Functional/DAPLEX interface for the MDBS. The approach was to design and implement a set of programs to encapsulate the Functional/DAPLEX language as introduced by D.W Shipman in 1981. It is imperative that the interface maintain the look, feel and characteristics of the Functional data model. The result is a set of programs, written in C, which implement a Functional/DAPLEX interface, thus a sixth interface, for the MDBS. The programs parse DAPLEX data definition language and data manipulation language constructs, convert them to an MDBS common format, store the data with other models' base data and can reconvert MDBS common data back to a Functional form.

47DTIC ADA159509: The Design And Implementation Of A Relational Interface For The Multi-Lingual Database System.
By Defense Technical Information Center
Traditionally, the design and implementation of a conventional database system begins and ends with the choice of a data model followed by the specification of a model-based data language. Thus, the database system is restricted to a single data model and a specific data language. An alternative to this traditional approach to database-system development is the multi-lingual database system (MLDS). This alternative approach enables the user to access and manage a large collection of databased via several data models and their corresponding data languages wihtout the aforementioned restiction. This thesis presents the specification and implementation of a relational/SQl language interface for the MLDS. Specifically, it presents the specification and implementation of an interface which translates SQL language calls into attribute-based language requests. We describe the software engineering aspects of our implementation and an overview of the four modules which comprise our relational/SQL language interface.

50DTIC ADA267403: Design And Implementation Of An Interface Editor For The Amadeus Multi- Relational Database Front-end System
By Defense Technical Information Center
This thesis extends the Graphical User Interface of a prototype multi-relational database front-end system, called Amadeus. System enhancements are realized through the application of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and Human-Computer Interface (HCI) design principles. Knowledge gained from each topic has been incorporated into the design and implementation of a Form-based interface for database data entry and display. The focus of this thesis is divided between two issues: the development of a set of tools for creating and using Form objects; and the design of the Form object itself. Form creation is accomplished using an application program called the Interface Editor module. The Interface Editor is one of six modules which, together, comprise the Amadeus system. Form manipulation occurs in a second application which implements basic program methods for controlling Data entry and display processes. Design and implementation of this thesis was accomplished using the Prograph programming language and development environment, which provided a basic set of system classes essential to the implementation of the Form object and Graphical User Interfaces....
