6Database Design And Implementation For USMC Manpower Retention Survey
By Smith, Horace Wayde
MCERC is a database design and implementation to support the survey instruments for the USMC Exit and Retention Censuses, which are administered over the Internet. The Retention Census is a longitudinal survey administered annually to all Marines. A review of commercially available survey software revealed a lack of support for longitudinal surveys. A semantic object model for survey instruments is developed that relates them to the response data they collect. The resultant database schema facilitates version management of survey instruments over their life cycle. The design supports the longitudinal aspect of the USMC Censuses by allowing the tracking of the instruments and response data over time. A relational model of the database design is prepared and implemented in Access (TM). A user interface is designed using Visual Basic, which integrates Cognos powerplay (TM) into the system for analysis of the data. The interface includes the capability to convert raw data into a matrix for analysis. Issues of database administration are discussed as they relate to scaling the system from a stand alone to a multiple user environment

7Design And Implementation Of An Operational Database For The Fleet Area Control And Surveillance Facility
By Rosynek, Dennis James and Dreher, Peter James
The Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility (FACSFAC) located at North Island, San Diego, currently performs its data collection, storage and processing functions manually. Expected expansion of the scope of operations at FACSFAC will overwhelm the present system. This thesis develops an Oracle-based relational database system for use by FACSFAC. The system consists of two applications. In the scheduling application, inputs from various sources are compiled, allowing both a powerful query capability and the production of a weekly schedule of activities for the facilities and personnel assigned to FACSFAC. The exercise results application provides an automated method of gathering and querying pertinent tactical employment and range utilization data for required weekly, monthly and quarterly reports. 10Design And Implementation Of A Prototype PC Based Graphical And Interactive MILSATCOM Requirements Database System
By Major, William M.
This thesis develops a prototype PC based Military Satellite Communications MILSATCOM) Requirements Database (MRDB) application for U.S. Space Command, using Microsoft's Access relational database management system (DBMS) for Windows. It demonstrates the advantages of using the proposed database system over the existing one and shows how U.S. Space Command can save both time and money by using a PC based interactive, graphical, and user friendly database system. A rapid prototyping approach in concert with a six phase database design process was used to develop the prototype. The first two chapters of the thesis provide a background of the application and describe database management systems in general and Microsoft Access in particular. The applications of Access - tables, queries, forms, reports, macros, and modules - to the design of the MRDB are then discussed in the succeeding five chapters. The Conclusions describe the advantages and benefits of using the prototype MRDB database system and make recommendations for future improvements.

12The Design And Implementation Of A Relational Interface For The Multi-lingual Database System
By Kloepping, Gary R. and Mack, John F.
Traditionally, the design and implementation o-f a conventional database system begins with the choice o-f a data model followed by the specification of a model -based data language. Thus, the database system is restricted to a single data model and a specific data language. An alternative to this traditional approach to database—system development is the multi-lingual database system (MLDS) . This alternative approach enables the user to access and manage a large collection of databases via several data models and their corresponding data languages without the aforementioned restriction. In this thesis we present the specification and implementation of a relational /SQL language interface for the MLDS. Specifically, we present the specification and implementation of an interface which translates SQL language calls into attribute-based data language (ABDL) requests. We describe the software engineering aspects of our implementation and an overview of the four modules which comprise our relational /SQL language interface.

13Design And Implementation Of An Enterprise Information System Utilizing A Component Based Three-tier Client/server Database System
By Akbay, Murat. and Lewis, Steven C.
The Naval Security Group currently requires a modem architecture to merge existing command databases into a single Enterprise Information System through which each command may manipulate administrative data. There are numerous technologies available to build and implement such a system. Component- based architectures are extremely well-suited for creating scalable and flexible three-tier Client/Server systems because the data and business logic are encapsulated within objects, allowing them to be located anywhere on a network. The first tier represents the visual aspects of the data on the client side. The middle tier consists of server objects that represent the persistent data and enforce the business logic functions. The third tier maintains the database management systems. The client interacts with the middle-tier server objects via Common Object Request Broker Architecture. CORBA provides a language and platform independent architecture that enables objects to transparently make requests and receive responses in a distributed environment. Java is an object- oriented, multi-threaded, secure mobile code system that allows applications to run on all major computing platforms. This thesis examines the design of an EIS using Java Applets that use Inter-Orb Protocol to communicate with CORBA middle- tier server objects. The third tier will incorporate Java Database Connectivity to communicate with database management systems.

17Design And Implementation Of A Database Management System To Support Administrative Activities Onboard Hellenic Navy Vessels
By Tsongas, George Chris
The Hellenic Navy ships have a challenging mission which encompasses tactical, operational and administrative tasks. This mission is carried out by the personnel serving onboard. In order to more effectively manage the personnel, an automated database management system is required. This system would contain all personnel records and other pertinent information. Furthermore, the system would produce periodic reports required by other commands concerning crewmembers, as well as a variety of other reports designed by the user to support the daily activities onboard. This thesis designs and implements an automated database system that can be used on the Hellenic navy ships. The methodology followed is the standard systems' development life cycle (SDLC). The requirements for the system are obtained, and the database and application are designed and implemented. Paradox is used for the database management system software. Special issues like training, security, conversion and maintenance are taken into consideration. The result of this thesis is a functional application named SPAS (Shipboard Personnel Administration System) that will fulfill the users' requirements, keep track of the administrative activities of the ships, and help in performing the desired tasks accurately

23Design And Implementation Of Visual Interface To Database
By Suprapto
Traditional approaches to database design and implementation involve text-oriented data access with their inherent lack of modularity, extensibility, and modifiability. An alternative to this traditional approach is using visual interface for the design and implementation of databases. This alternative approach involved using software development tools(toolkits) to ensure modularity, extensibility and modifiability. To study the effectiveness of using visual interfaces, we have designed and implemented a sample application using KnoeldgePro(Windows), a tool for rapid application development under Windows.

24DTIC ADA267403: Design And Implementation Of An Interface Editor For The Amadeus Multi- Relational Database Front-end System
By Defense Technical Information Center
This thesis extends the Graphical User Interface of a prototype multi-relational database front-end system, called Amadeus. System enhancements are realized through the application of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and Human-Computer Interface (HCI) design principles. Knowledge gained from each topic has been incorporated into the design and implementation of a Form-based interface for database data entry and display. The focus of this thesis is divided between two issues: the development of a set of tools for creating and using Form objects; and the design of the Form object itself. Form creation is accomplished using an application program called the Interface Editor module. The Interface Editor is one of six modules which, together, comprise the Amadeus system. Form manipulation occurs in a second application which implements basic program methods for controlling Data entry and display processes. Design and implementation of this thesis was accomplished using the Prograph programming language and development environment, which provided a basic set of system classes essential to the implementation of the Form object and Graphical User Interfaces.... 25DTIC ADA252935: The Design And Implementation Of A Functional Interface For The Attribute-Based Multi-Lingual Database System
By Defense Technical Information Center
Traditionally, the design and implementation of a conventional database system begins with the selection of a data model, followed by the specification of a model-based data language. Hence, the database system is restricted to a single data model and a specific data language. One alternative to this traditional approach to database-system development is the multi-lingual database system (MLDS). This alternative approach affords the user the ability to access and manage a large collection of databases, via several data models and their corresponding data languages, without the aforementioned limitations. This thesis presents a methodology for supporting the Functional Data Model and the Data Language DAPLEX for the MLDS. Specifically, we design an interface which translates DAPLEX data language calls into attribute-based data language (ABDL) requests. A description of the software engineering aspects of the implementation and an overview of the modules which comprise our DAPLEX language interface are provided.

By Defense Technical Information Center
Traditionally, courses in database systems do not use pedagogical software for the purpose of instructing the database systems, despite the progress made in modern database architecture. This thesis presents a working document to assist in the instruction of a new database system, the Multi-Backend Database System (MBDS) and the Multi-Lingual Database System (MLDS). As the course of instruction describes the creation and manipulation of each language, this pedagogical aid will demonstrate, utilizing the live database system, the procedures and methods learned in class. Keywords: User interfaces; User manuals; Access; Instructions; Execution.

By Defense Technical Information Center
The Turkish Navy frigates have a challenging mission, which encompasses tactical, operational and administrative tasks. Lacking an automated information infrastructure hinders the ships' ability to efficiently perform the administrative activities, to generate the required reports quickly and to make effective decisions based on this information. The objective of this thesis is to design and implement the Personnel, Operations, Equipment, and Training (POET) Database and Application Program for the Turkish Navy frigates and to analyze the potential benefits that will be obtained by using this system. The POET database system will provide the Turkish Navy frigates with an automated information system that will support the administrative activities, release manpower to perform other duties and reduce the productive power loss by increasing the availability, accuracy, and consistency of the data. The thesis covers the analysis of requirements, conceptual database design using Semantic Data Model, logical database design on Microsoft Access DBMS, and implementation of the application program using Java and JDBC API. The result of this study is a functional application that will eliminate most of the current problems onboard the frigates and result in considerable savings of personnel power and time while providing the required information to the command quickly.

35Design, Implementation, And Analysis Of The Personnel, Operations, Equipment, And Training (POET) Database And Application Program For The Turkish Navy Frigate
By Can, Yuksel

36The Design And Implementation Of A Functional/DAPLEX Interface For The Multimodel And Multilingual Database System
By Demers, William Aime. and Rogelstad, Jon Mark.
The Multi-Lingual and Multi-Model Database System (MDBS), at the Naval Postgraduate School, is the only database system in which five different database model interfaces operate on a single computer system. The purpose of the MDBS is to prove that multiple database models can coexist and share data within a single computer system. The MDBS provides a platform in which diverse database models can share data, via access to other models' base data, stored in the MDBS common format. The problem was that a Functional database model had not previously been implemented on the MDBS. The goal of this thesis was to provide a Functional/DAPLEX interface for the MDBS. The approach was to design and implement a set of programs to encapsulate the Functional/DAPLEX language as introduced by D.W Shipman in 1981. It is imperative that the interface maintain the look, feel and characteristics of the Functional data model. The result is a set of programs, written in C, which implement a Functional/DAPLEX interface, thus a sixth interface, for the MDBS. The programs parse DAPLEX data definition language and data manipulation language constructs, convert them to an MDBS common format, store the data with other models' base data and can reconvert MDBS common data back to a Functional form.

38DTIC ADA238888: Design And Implementation Of A Prototype Microcomputer Database Management System For The Standardization Of Data Elements For The Department Of Defense
By Defense Technical Information Center
The need for data management standardization has been clearly identified by the Office of the Secretary of Defense as a means to realize savings in the $9 billion spent annually on information technology in DOD and to further the sharing of information. This thesis discusses the importance of data requirements, functional requirements, logical database design and application design for a prototype microcomputer dictionary system for standardizing, storing, updating and viewing data elements, the lowest level in the hierarchy of metadata. This prototype dictionary is then implemented in a powerful relational database management system, Paradox 3.0. This system will help developers within DOD to build, store, track and use standard data elements.

39DTIC ADA305978: Analysis, Design, And Implementation Of A Database Management System (DBMS) For Commander In Chief Pacific Fleet Propulsion Examining Board (CINCPACFLT PEB).
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet Propulsion Examining Board (CINCPACFLT PEB) is a professional group of naval officers experienced in engineering readiness. This group of naval officers conducts examinations to assess the engineering readiness of the Pacific Fleet. There are two classes of examinations conducted by the PEB. The Operational Propulsion Plant Examination (OPPE) assesses the engineering readiness when the ship is underway. The Light Off Examination (LOE) assesses the engineering readiness after a ship's propulsion plant has been secured, for example overhauls, in excess of ninety days. The examination data is then collected in the exam summary worksheet and entered into the database. The current database system uses the dBASE IV Plus database management system (DBMS) software and is constructed as a flat file system. Redundant data, inaccuracies, and inefficiencies are prevalent throughout the current system. The purpose of this thesis is to design a relational database (Propulsion Examining Board Database System (PEBDS)), implement and replace the current system, and provide a user friendly graphical user interface (GUI). The PEBDS and the GUl are constructed using Paradox for Windows Version 4.5 DBMS software.

40DTIC ADA151694: Design And Implementation Of The Digital Engineering Laboratory Distributed Database Management System.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This effort produced a basic design and partial implementation of a distributed database management system (DDBMS) for use in the AFIT Digital Engineering Laboratory. The objectives of this thesis were to lay out the requirements for a DDBMS, to design a simplified implementation of one, and to accomplish a partial implementation of that design. The requirements analysis used the Structured Analysis and Design Technique (SADT) to document the DDBMS requirements. The analysis, independent of any hardware or specific algorithmic implementation, covers all aspects of a DDBMS, including routing and execution of queries and updates, DDBMS initialization and reconfiguration, and recovery from network malfunctions. The detailed design expanded the SADT diagrams of the requirements analysis for specific methods of executing queries and updates in the DDBMS. These methods were selected to limit the scope of that design. Structure charts were produced using the SADT diagrams as a reference, specifying parameters and algorithms for the modules. Only the part of the design that handles DDBMS queries was implemented. The implementation was greatly simplified to exclude partitioning and optimization. Two DDBMS nodes were connected via the Digital Engineering Laboratory network. These were, in turn, connected to host computers that evaluate queries and return the resulting relation. Additional keywords: Systems engineering, and Test and evaluation. (Author)

By Defense Technical Information Center
This thesis presents the design and implementation of the Intelligence Database system. A database management system must be used in Intelligence System in order to increase end-user productivity, decrease staff effort, enable the work to be done more efficiently, and permit end-user management more authority and responsibility. The Semantic Database Model was chosen as the method for designing the database. The SDM is a high-level semantics-based database description and structuring formalism for database design and enhances usability of database system. Using the output of SDM in the Intelligence database, the records are rearranged in order to fit a relational DBMS. The Intelligence database is implemented, using the ORACLE relational DBMS. 42DTIC ADA289656: Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Database System For The Systems Management Curriculum Office.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Systems Management Curricular Office at the Naval Postgraduate School is burdened with the enormous administrative task of managing files for over 500 students. In a time of drastic military downsizing and funding cuts, this task will require more work of a smaller staff with less money. The burden of paper management could be lessened through automation of record keeping, while increasing efficiency and effectiveness. Valuable time for the students could be saved through elimination of excessive paperwork which they were required to prepare. Based on requirements from the Systems Management Curricular Office, this thesis designs and implements a database management system. The primary objective is to allow the incoming class of students to enroll using this system instead of traditional paper forms, enabling the staff to focus on more non-administrative tasks. This system will store, sort and compare data relevant to all students while minimizing the need to maintain hardcopy files. Additionally, the staff will be able to query reports and generate letters with minimal effort. The system is also analyzed to determine possible enhancements that could be added in the future. The Systems Management Database Systems (SMDS) is designed using Borland's PARADOX version 4.0. (AN)

47DTIC ADA159738: Design And Implementation Of Inventory Database.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This thesis presents the design and implementation of the inventory database system. In order to effectively command and control the inventory of an Air Force, the commander must know the status of his resources. The use of a database management system can significantly increase his access to information regarding resource availability, location, state of operational readiness, and also increase end-user productivity, and decrease staff effort. The Semantic Data Model (SDM) was chosen as the method for designing the database. SDM provides an effective base for accommodating the evolution of the content structure and use of the database. After logical design of the inventory database, records are rearranged in order to satisfy relational database management system requirements. The inventory database is implemented by using the ORACLE relational DBMS. (Author)

48Database Design And Implementation
By Maciaszek, Leszek
(Author)

50DTIC ADA077101: The Design And Implementation Of A Database Management System Using Abstract Data Type.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The design, implementation, and performance analysis of a database management system implemented using abstract data types are presented. The use of abstract data types as an implementation tool is shown to have several significant advantages over current implementation techniques. First, by using a combination of abstract data types and generic procedures to structure the design of a database system, the resulting software will be more reliable. Also, by employing a programming language which supports specification and verification of abstract data types, we can Guarantee data imdependence. Finally, we demonstrate that the application of abstract data types permits the elimination of run-time interpretation of the schema and subschema such as in IBM's IMS, Univac's DMS110, and INGRES. Instead, the data manipulation routines, which are shown to be examples of generic procedures, are implemented as parameterized calls to the procedures bound to the instances of the three abstract data types used to represent the logical structure of the database.
